Top Travel Movies to Watch
Here is my list of top movies to watch, from one wanderlust to another.
- 7.1 IMDB
- 2 hrs
This is one of those movies where women are seen to take the lead in the entire movie, without even a male supporting actor.
Cheryl Strayed, wonderfully played by Reese Witherspoon starring in a biographical adventure drama film based on the book “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail”. It tells you about the story of a simple woman going on a trek across the Pacific Crest Trail in Southern California to heal from her mother’s death and a recent divorce from her husband.
It’s a brave memoir because the trail she chose to hike is a very challenging one, along which, she reminisces a lot about her childhood and her mother. She also came across a few hikers along the same path exchanging wisdom and advice.
Though this movie is a remarkable expression of raw human emotions. It’s a tad slow for my taste and the scenery is very plain. If you want to see how a person deals with personal trauma on their own amidst nature, this is the movie to refer to.
9. The Bucket list
- 7.4 IMDB
- 1 hr 37 min
If you are looking for something to rejuvenate your roots and the actual purpose of living then this is the movie to see.
This movie gives out the story of two people who upon being diagnosed with cancer make a list of things to do before kicking the bucket. Their journey takes us from France to India to Egypt, skydiving, riding motorcycles, lion safari in Tanzania and even visiting Mt. Everest in Nepal. A perfect itinerary if you ask me.
One sure thing to take away from this movie is, don’t wait for life to happen, make it happen..
Also, the bond between Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson will move you to tears in the end.
8. Into The Wild
- 8.1 IMDB
- 2 hr 28 min
This movie is adapted straight from the book “Into the wild” by Jon Krakauer and is based upon the real-life experiences of Chris McCandless.
This is an excellent movie for someone planning on living the hippie life.
The first 10 minutes of this movie made me feel like I was watching an episode of Man Vs Wild. Then just as the 11th minute was over, there were tears in the protagonist’s eyes and a smile on my face, only for the narration to take a dark turn.
The story revolves around a young man, giving up all he had and just going on hitchhiking from the US to Alaska with minimum supplies making new friends along the way and the monologues reminded me of Farhan Akhtar from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
Though this movie will make you wanna give up everything and start living like a hippie. For me, the ending didn’t turn out too well, as it reminds one of the harsh realities of life.
If you are watching this movie with full attention, you are bound to smile from your heart a lot and maybe even tear up a little.
7. The Darjeeling Limited
- 7.2 IMDB
- 1 hr 44 min
This is an absolutely delightful movie to watch. I found this movie to be one of those few flicks which were able to capture the culture and rich landscape of India very well and not only its poverty. Each of the 3 characters had so much to add to this movie. Also, there will be few moments in this movie which are directed very heartily and few others which will not fail to make you laugh.
This movie was shot in the city of Jodhpur and is a story of 3 estranged brothers who decide to meet and embark on a spiritual journey after the death of their father.
Not many exotic places to drool upon, but a really good watch.
And guess what? We even have Bill Murray and Irrfan Khan as a cameo in this film.
- 8.2 IMDB
- 2 hr 26 min
We don’t talk enough about the guts Rani had in this movie, so as to leave behind her family in India and explore the streets of Paris and Amsterdam alone; where she was supposed to go on her honeymoon with her husband who refused to marry her. Struggling with the language barrier and the cultural shock, Rani still manages to befriend people from different ethnicities and thus begins her adventure to find herself.
I think this movie teaches us more about the self-discovery you make while you travel and makes us believe that the journey is more important than the destination itself.
And the glow up she has after her entire trip turned out to be as charming as her persona.
5. Under the Tuscan Sun
- 6.8 IMDB
- 1 hr 53 min
Can this movie get any more realistic while dealing with sensitive topics like depression and the meaning of true friendship? The story starts with a fiction critic getting a divorce; and being compelled by her friends to go on a romantic gay Tuscany tour(quite hilarious, as she isn’t even gay) to restart her own life. Later, she is so enchanted by the beauty of it all that she decides to buy a villa in the countryside; and begins its restoration and also of herself.
Sandra Oh plays the role of an amazing, supportive, hard on the outside but soft on the inside kinda friend.
And what better way to explore a new city than to mingle with the locals.
Everybody dreams of Paris and France, but the subtle beauty of this Italian city of Tuscany, is beyond description and the language is surely admirable.
It’s such a light and warm watch.
4. The Tourist
- 6 IMDB
- 1 hr 43 min
I am forever enchanted by the scenic landscapes in this movie; no matter how many times I watch it. Also, there is no match for Anjelina Jolie and Johnny Depp’s chemistry here.
It’s a romantic comedy crossed with a crime thriller, taking you to the streets of the magnificent city of lovers, Venice.
How can one not be captivated by the grandeur of this city and also the classy simplicity of its daily life?
3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
- 8.1 IMDB
- 2 hr 35 min
Do I even need to say anything? The reputation of this movie precedes itself. This movie gives the ultimate trip goals with your bestie!! And who in their right senses would not want to participate in adventure sports with their childhood buddies.
Adventure of these 3 childhood best friends starts when one of them decides to get married. As kids, they formed a pact stating they would go on a full-throttle bachelors trip if anyone decides to marry and no one can back out of it. Years went by and they got busy with their respective lives, but still managed to make it to this trip. This movie gives us the perfect Spain itinerary starting from Barcelona to Costa Brava, Seville, and Pamplona.
One cannot stop themselves from going gaga over the scenery of this country which is balanced by the excellent soundtracks and heart touching shayaris by Farhan Akhtar.
2. Eat Pray Love
- 5.8 IMDB
- 2 hr 20 min
Based on a biographical book written by Elizabeth Gilbert, this movie is my personal Holy Grail. I have seen this movie and read its book about 100 times. This movie is soul food as well as eye candy. It starts with the protagonist, Julia Roberts, who wants to discover herself. She embarks on a journey where she spends 4 months in 3 different countries. Devouring her taste buds and learning the majestic language in Italy; finding inner peace and meditating in India; and finally learning the art of living from an ancient medicine man and giving herself a chance at love in Bali, Indonesia.
This movie gives major travel goals as well as an intent to find true happiness in life.
Since this movie deals with the complexity of life and requires a little patience to absorb the essence of it, it didn’t get as much attention as it should.
1. Secret life of Walter Mitty
- 7.3 IMDB
- 1 hr 54 min
If you haven’t seen this one yet, believe me, you oughta see it! It’s a perfect combination of diving into the unknown adventures right after a mundane life. I consider it to be one of Ben Stiller’s most authentic characters.
It’s a story of a middle-aged man who wants to seek greatness in life but is stuck with the mundane activities of it. Forced by some situations; one day he gathers up all his courage and leaves for the best time of his life.
This movie will make you add Greenland to your travel list just because of its nature which is mostly untouched by humans. Well, if you ever thought of going on a spiritual journey into the wilderings.
It’s also an eye-candy for people who love the art of photography and want to travel all around the globe just for that perfect shot.
“Beautiful things don’t ask for attention” is one of the best dialogues of this movie.
So, these were my all-time favorite movies to curb wanderlust. I hope I did justice to the list. Still, if you feel that I have missed any flick and is worth watching; do mention it in the comment section. Cheers!
