Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2021 – 2022

by Vargis.Khan

Like previous years, starting this Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2021 post to share the latest updates on Srinagar Leh Highway in terms of the condition of the road, traffic timings, opening and closing dates, and the overall Kashmir situation. As the winter season progresses and ends, I will continue updating this article with estimated Srinagar Leh Highway Opening Date 2021, Srinagar Leh road condition, any news on unrest in the valley, and when you can travel from Srinagar to Leh or vice versa.

Srinagar Leh Highway Current Status Today = OPEN

The present status of Srinagar Leh Highway is OPEN.

This winter saw a very less amount of snow throughout the entire Himalayan region. As a result, all the passes were declared way ahead of their schedule. Zoji La Pass and the entire Srinagar Leh stretch are now open for vehicular traffic. BRO is still working on making the road stable but that is something that happens for the entire season.

For now, if you want to travel to Ladakh from Srinagar by road, you can continue with your plans. The hotels in Manali, Ladakh, and Srinagar have started to accept tourists as well.

A lot of the situation will also depend on how the COVID situation will unfold this year. So far, things are still far from being under control and you should practice utmost caution to ensure that you do not catch the infection anywhere. But only the coming months will tell how the rest of the year is going to be.

Update – January 2021

The 434-km long Srinagar-Leh Highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with the rest of Jammu and Kashmir is likely to open ending March. It was closed for traffic in December last year following heavy Snowfall in Sonamarg, Zojila Pass, Zero Point, and Meenmarg areas of the road.

The snow-clearing work is expected to be completed by April after which BRO will assess the condition of the road. If it was deemed safe for the general public, civilian traffic will be allowed.

The historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in the Jammu region, remained closed due to the accumulation of huge snow on the highway, particularly Pir-ki-Gali. There are also threats of avalanches on the road, which is seen as an alternative to Srinagar-Jammu highway.

The Anantnag to Kishtwar road also remained closed due to snow accumulation.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway is open for one-way traffic. Traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite directions. Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will have to cross Qazigund before 1300 hrs and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed in the afternoon.

Srinagar to Leh Road Status Today = OPEN
Mughal Road Status = OPEN
Anantnag Kishtwar Road Status = OPEN

Other than knowing whether the road is open or not, there are several other things about the highway that you should be aware of in order to ensure that your trip remains to be safe and hassle-free. Some of these details will include knowledge about the route, your accommodation choices, places on the way, and challenges that you may face. Please read How to Plan a Trip to Leh Ladakh – A Complete Travel Guide for more details.

Zoji La Pass Road Status = CLOSED

Current status of Zojila pass is closed. It is the opening of Zoji La pass that determines and finalizes the opening of the entire Srinagar Leh Highway.

Zojila Pass Timings

  • Srinagar – Sonamarg – Gumari Road: Vehicular movement shall be allowed both ways from Kargil towards Srinagar and vice versa.
  • LMVs from 0500 hrs. to 0700 hrs and HMVs from 0700 hrs to 1000 hrs shall be allowed from Minimarg towards Srinagar
  • LMVs from 1000 hrs. to 1200 hrs. & HMVs from 1200 hrs. to 1500 hrs. shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil

Planning a Trip from Srinagar to Leh

It is not only about Srinagar Leh highway opening time and the closing date but you should also be aware of the best time to be on the road. Travel too early or late in the season and you are risking ruining your entire trip. If caught unaware of the situation ahead, you may get stuck somewhere or even turned back. I have covered some of these important aspects in the articles below and would encourage you to take a look at them.

Srinagar Leh Highway Latest News

One of the most important factors that will determine the Srinagar to Leh highway status next year is how the whole Kashmir situation will develop. The removal of Article 370 has not only changed the geographical map of India but also the lives of people living in Kashmir and Ladakh.

So far in the year, there have not been any major incidents but it does not mean that the situation has settled. So before you plan the trip, please keep a close check on the news before deciding whether to include Srinagar to Leh road in your itinerary or not.

Other than posting updates on the current status of Srinagar Leh highway, I will also post the word related to the Kashmir situation and whether or not it is safe to travel on the route. You can bookmark this page and keep checking back to stay updated on Srinagar Leh road status in 2021.

Srinagar Leh highway condition

Most of the highway was in good condition in the previous year. There were some bad stretches as well in between. But on an overall basis, the road was mostly a mix of good and average.

The heavy snowfall and extreme weather in winters do a lot of damage to the road. How it will be in 2021 is something that we will only know after the road opens. I will post the most recent images of the highway in our Community Forum Thread which I will urge you to check.

I cannot post too many images on this page because it will then turn too heavy so for images, please take a look at the forum thread. There is really no way to tell Srinagar-Leh road condition today until it is completely open. The stretch between Leh and Kargil, however, remains open throughout the year and is a completely smooth one.

Srinagar Leh Highway in October

The status of Srinagar Leh highway in October remains to be open but a trip in later part of the month is never a good idea. It can snow anytime at Zoji La in October and though the road may remain open, it can temporarily be closed for a few days. The risk of driving on slippery stretches, of course, will remain in October.

Srinagar Leh Highway in April

Srinagar to Leh road status in April will entirely depend on how much it snowed and how fast BRO was able to clear the snow. Historically though, the road remains closed in the first part of the month and is only open after the 20th. My advice would be to wait for the weather updates before finalizing your itinerary. Traveling in May first week will be a much better idea than April.

Srinagar Leh Highway in May

Srinagar to Leh road condition in May is much better and stabilized as compared to April. It is among the best months to be traveling on the Srinagar to Leh road route. The weather will be pleasant and you will also get to see plenty of snow as well which is mostly all gone by May end.

Srinagar Leh highway in June

Srinagar Leh road current status in June is completely open and is safe to travel on. This is the peak tourist season in Kashmir and Ladakh and another good month to be on the route.

Srinagar Leh highway in July and August

Both these months are the time of the monsoon season. Though it does not rain in Ladakh so much, it surely does in the Kashmir area. Floods, landslides and incessant rains are a normal occurrence in both these months. Before you embark upon your journey; please make sure you search for Srinagar to Leh road update in terms of the weather ahead. Or you can just return to this page and look for updates.

Srinagar Leh highway in September

September is an awesome month for a trip to both Kashmir and Ladakh. The rains would be all gone but would have left plenty of greenery behind in Kashmir for you to enjoy. The barren landscape of Ladakh presents an amazing contrast of colors in this month. The road will remain completely open and you are free to travel.

Is Srinagar Leh road open?

No, Srinagar Leh Highway is closed at the moment.

When will Zojila Pass Open?

Zojila Pass is declared open by around 15th of April each year.

It is a lockdown right now Amit, no one knows what the timings will be once it is all open.
Baleno is good, you can plan the journey. Just be careful around water crossings due to low GC.
