This bear was sighted in Sonamarg just when it was getting dark. There were still people walking around and eating in the Dhabas.

The valley around Sonamarg is known as Bear Valley and sighting a bear there every now and then is nothing new for the locals.

Sonamarg, the meadow of gold, is a small tourist town situated at a distance of around 80 km from Srinagar on the Srinagar – Ladakh road. The place is named such because its surrounding peaks turn golden at the time of sunset and sunrise.

The best time to visit Sonamarg, in my opinion, are the months of April, May, June, and September. But then it also depends on what kind of a trip are you looking forward to.

In the months of Jan and Feb, Sonamarg remains closed for tourists
Starting from Srinagar, the farthest that you can go is the town of Gagangir. After Gagangir, the road remains closed and in these two months, you cannot reach Sonamarg by road.

Sonamarg opens for tourists sometime towards the end of March or early April. The snow-clearing work starts from Gagangir. Depending on the weather and the amount of snow on the road, usually by mid or late March, the road is declared open.

This is the best time if you want to plan a winter trip to Sonamarg. The entire town is covered in white and if you want to see snow, then you should visit Sonamarg in these months.

The months of May and June are considered to be a very good time
for planning a visit to Sonamarg because the weather at this time is very pleasant.

Days will be moderately warm and nights will be pleasantly cold
But at the same time, this is also when Sonamarg receives the highest number of tourists.

Srinagar Leh highway is open at this time. So people traveling to Ladakh also break their journey in Sonamarg. On a general basis as well
because this is the tourist season, you will find Sonamarg a little crowded in these months.

But if you are planning a trip with your family, then May and June will probably be the greatest time to go.

The monsoon hits the Kashmir region and Sonamarg sometimes towards the end of June. After that, July and August are completely the monsoon season.

It rains a lot in Kashmir but at this time, the views will be great. There will be a lot of greenery, clouds hovering over the valleys, falls, and water streams.

So on an overall basis, due to the rain, the scenery improves a lot. But at the same time, it also poses a risk of landslides and road closures.

If the weather turned extreme, and it continued to rain, it is possible that you may remain trapped inside your hotel room, unable to go sightseeing anywhere.

September is my favorite time to visit Sonamarg. The monsoon season would have ended by then but there will still be a lot of greenery around.
The views are actually great in September.

The weather starts to get a little cold in September. But since the Ladakh tourist season is heading towards its end for the year, Sonamarg also is not that crowded in September.

So overall, it is a good time if you want to get some great views but also do not want to see Sonamarg as crowded as it would be in the prior months

So the best time to visit Sonamarg if you want to see snow is late March and early April. For pleasant weather or for visiting with your family, May, June, and September will be a good time.

The scenery in my opinion is best in July and August but these months also pose a risk of rain and landslides.

For a budget trip, I will recommend visiting a little late in the season, in October. There are not a lot of tourists at this time and you may be able to get a budgeted accommodation.

By November, the tourist season in Sonamarg usually has ended. There have been times when there wasn't a lot of snow, the weather did not turn extreme, and Sonamarg remained open till December.

But usually, Sonamarg remains closed in November and December. In November, you may be able to reach there but you may not be able to find a place to stay. Most of the hotels would have shut down by then and by December, tourist season is all over.

In this video, I will provide a list of places to visit in Sonamarg; tourist attractions that you just cannot afford to miss while visiting this little piece of heaven.

The biggest attraction of Sonamarg is Thajiwas Glacier. It is a trek of 6 kilometers and can be completed in 4 to 5 hours. From Sonamarg, you reach the snow-point at Thajiwas Glacier which is a 3 kilometers walk and then you come back. You can either walk on your own or you can also hire a pony

The second place to visit in Sonamarg will definitely be Zojila Pass. It is at an altitude of 11575 ft and 25 kilometers from Sonamarg. It is a steep climb and because that road is always heavily crowded with trucks, it can talk up to 2 hours to complete these 25 kilometers

Zero Point is a spot after Zojila top towards Dras. From Sonamarg, you will first reach Zojila top, and then you will drive a couple of kilometers more
to reach a place where there are a lot of Dhabas. That place is known as Zero Point.

The next place that you can visit in Sonamarg is Sarbal Village. It is a small village in the jungle with a river flowing next to it that offers great views and it is a good spot to spend some time

While you are in Sonamarg, most of the tourists stay on the market side of the town. But if you have some time, I will recommend going to the other side of the river. The reason why I am recommending this is that it offers an amazing view of the entire Sonamarg especially at the time of sunset.

If you are in for a little bit of trekking, then another point that I will recommend visiting in Sonamarg is Table Top. Reaching there involves trekking of about an hour from Sonamarg. Once you get there
you get an amazing view of the entire Sonamarg.

If you have some time, you can actually go all the way to Dras and the Kargil war memorial. This way, you will be able to cover Zojila, Zero point, Dras, and Kargil War memorial on the same day trip.

Thajiwas Glacier is a mountain glacier near the town of Sonamarg. It is one of the most easily accessible glaciers in Kashmir and is visible from pretty much everywhere in Sonamarg.

This picturesque location is also a preferred campsite. It offers magnificent views of green waters and snow-peaked mountains. Even during the summer months, you can find on the trek due to which, the last point is named as snow point. Put all of this together and it makes for a fabulous trekking route.

The trek remains closed in the months of January, February and March. In the months of December, later March, and April, it can be done but only partially.

In the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October, the entire trek remains open and you can walk all 3 kilometers to snow point.

In November and December, you may be able to complete only the first couple of kilometers and not the entire trek, depending on the weather.

The difficulty level of the trek is from easy to moderate. There is one very steep climb of about 200 meters initially and a couple of other places where you will have to climb up a bit. But overall, the trek is easily doable and you will have fun. If you had kids with you or your elders, I will recommend hiring a pony.

This is a video of the road from Sonamarg to Zojila Pass top and Zero Point.

The name Zoji La literally means the “mountain pass of blizzards” and quite rightly so. It is the most difficult stretch on the entire Srinagar Leh highway and it is because of Zoji La that the Leh route remains closed during the winter season.

The best time to visit Zoji La will be anytime between May to October. However, even in these months, you should avoid visiting between late June to August because of the monsoon season and Amarnath Yatra time.

There is no permit required to visit Zojila Pass.

This is a video of the road from Srinagar to Sonamarg. The total distance between the two places is about 80 kilometers. The road is in excellent condition and the journey can easily be completed in about 2 to 3 hours.

For the journey, you can either travel by your own vehicle, board a bus, or a shared cab, or rent a private taxi for the trip.
