The current Manali Leh highway status is closed. The road was officially declared closed in the first week of November due to fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions. Baralacha La Pass has already received several feet of snow and can no longer be crossed.Â
Starting from Manali, the farthest you can go is Jispa by the tunnel as Rohtang Pass is closed as well. From Leh, you can only travel as far as Upshi but not beyond that.
Depending on the weather, the road is expected to open by early May. To get the latest updates on Manali Leh highway, you can contact me on Instagram or call Kunal @ 9910402252.

When will Manali Leh Highway Open in 2023?
There is really no set or definite Manali Leh highway opening date as it all depends on the weather and how fast BRO is able to clear the snow. Historically, the road is declared open sometime towards the end of May or early June.
There have been instances when it was declared open even sooner. In 2018, when it snowed very little throughout the region, the entire road was freed of snow by April but the chances of that happening are a bit less.
To be on the safer side, assume the first week of June as Manali to Leh road open date. BRO starts working on clearing the snow from Rohtang Pass in April. After that, they start working toward Baralacha La.
The snow is cleared by May end. Authorities take another week or two for maintenance before the road gets open for civilian movement.
Rohtang Pass Status
The current status of Rohtang Pass as of now is closed. The pass received a heavy amount of snow throughout the month of October and was closed several times for both tourists and locals.
Baralacha La Road Status
Baralacha La pass status as of now is closed. It is the first pass to receive snow on the Manali Leh route and the last one to get open. The pass gets buried under snow by October’s end and becomes impossible to cross.
Best time to travel on Manali Leh Highway?
A lot of people rush to complete the journey as soon as the road is declared open. I will strongly advise against that for two reasons.
First is that immediately after the Manali Leh highway opening, the road remains very unstable. It can be closed again temporarily for maintenance; which will result in you getting stranded on the route.
The second reason is Manali to Leh road condition. It will be bad and broken in the initial days. You should give at least 2-3 weeks after the official Manali Leh highway opening time before you plan your own journey.
For a more detailed version of the information above, I will recommend reading When is the Best Time to Travel from Manali to Leh.
Is Manali Leh highway open in May?
The chances of the route remaining in the month of May are very few. I think it is safe to assume that it will definitely not be open before the 20th of May. So if you must travel in May, then keep your plans towards the end of the Month.
Is Manali Leh Highway Open in October?
Yes, Manali Leh Highway remains open in October. But it is safe to travel only before the 10th of the month. There are 5 high-altitude passes on the route and all of them start to receive snow in October.
So after the 10th and until the Manali Leh highway closing date, a journey on this road is both risky and dangerous.
Road Status from Manali to Leh
Last year, the road was a mix of good, bad and ugly. Majorly it was just average with some very bad stretches in between.
How it will be in 2023 is something that we will know after it opens. I will continue posting updates on the condition of the road in this thread as the season progresses.
Manali Leh Highway Closing Time
The road will remain open until the month of October and will get closed towards the end of the month.
Is Manali Leh Highway Open Now?
No, the road is not open right now.
Manali Leh Highway Permit Online
The only permit that you need for traveling from Manali to Leh is for Rohtang Pass. To know how you can get this permit either in person or online, please read How to Obtain a Permit for Rohtang Pass?
Current Manali Leh Highway Status Today
The current status of Manali Leh Highway today is closed.
When will the Manali Leh highway open?
The estimated date of opening of Manali Leh Highway is May 15th to June 1st.

Hi sir
Planning to delhi leh trip via road on 15th may to 22nd may…is it possible through travel by road from delhi-manali- leh…pls suggest..
It will be better to plan in early June or at least start after the 22nd. That way you will have a confirmation that the road is open
Sir, i am planning to take a trip to Leh in second week of May. While reaching there what are the possibly closed routes on Srinagar – Leh highway?
While returning i am coming back via Manali. So I’ll be driving from Leh to Manali over Leh-Manali hwy around in 1st week of June. What are the chances that Baralacha La will be closed due to snowfall? If so are there any alternative routes to reach Manali during that period?
Srinagar Leh highway will be open but hard to say anything about Manali Leh route right now Bhai, all depends on the weather. Chances are that it should be open by then though.
Hi Vargis,
Is it possible to take Tso moriri to Manali route in June 2-5?
I am planning Leh trip between 20/May to 5/Jun. Take flight to Leh and return via Manali. Could you please advise.
Yes it should be open by then
Hi Vargis,
We are planning a road trip to Leh on August 2nd week, what would be the road condition due to the monsoon.
Would flights are the only way or car is also doable.
what is the landslide situation in august’s first half?
Hello Vargis,

May 12: Leh Local sight
May 13: Leh to Pangong, stay at Pangong
May 14: Pangong to Tso moriri stay at Tso moriri

May 16: Sachu to Manali, Stay at manali
May 17: Manali local

Can you comment if above trip is possible in Mid of May ?, would Leh Manali road be open by Mid of May ?
is it possible to travel from Pangong to tso moriri within a day ?
Hi Sachin – How are you traveling?
I will be hiring Taxi/Xylo or Innva from Leh
Then yes, the plan is doable. But just make sure that you clarify this entire route with your cab driver and that he is expected to drop you in Manali. Sometimes, due to their own disputes, these guys do not allow cabs or bikes of other regions to enter their area
Thanks a lot for your Feedback and Advise, Yep i will check with Cab driver at Leh before booking.
Another plan I was thinking, to do Suru valley and Zanskar valley instead of Leh-Tso moriri.
it would be like Leh – Kargil- Suru valley – Zanskar valley (Padum) – Darcha – Manali.
1) Is road from kargil to Zanskar are open by mid of May ?
2) is road from Padum to Darcha doable via Xylo/Innova in Mid of May ?
3) I think i would need to change Cab at Kargil to go to Suru/Zanskar valley, Can same driver cover Suru/Padum/Darcha/Manali route ?
You are welcome
1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes
We recently did this, but in the reverse order. Tso Moriri to Pangong Via Tsaga and Chushul. It is doable comfortably in a day. This route (mostly runs along with Chinese Border) had bad patches between Chushul and Nyoma.
There also exists another route via Chuchul-Kaksang La-Mahe (we did not try). From what I read, the road also bad patches between.

Hi Sir, Can you provide an update on Darcha – Shinkula- Padum road?
Planning trip to Zanskar this year
Hello Gunjan – It was open last year in the summer months and will open this year as well by May end. The road is in terrible state though.
Thank you for replying. Does this mean Manali- Leh highway will open before Shinku La? Or do both the routes to Ladakh open at the same time.
You are welcome Gunjan. Yes, Manali Leh usually opens earlier than Shinku La.
Hi Vargis. Please update Darcha – Shinku La – Pudum Road Status

Vergis bhai today 28th july manali to leh roads are closed yes or not?
Bhai it is open but there is news of landslides and heavy rains. The road was blocked last week for a couple of days because of landslides. Better to not take the risk and wait for the rains to subside
Vargis bhai, I am planning for Leh visit by road.
Manali -Leh- Kargil-Srinagar in August 2021.
I read somewhere that August is not spt due to monsoon. Please say if it is ok yo travel in August to Leh by road.

Raj Bhai August is not really the best time to go due to the monsoon season. If possible, delay the plans to September mid. If you cannot, then find out about weather conditions ahead before you leave home

Hi Vargis,
Thanks for the page. I am thinking on travelling on 25 June on a bike trip from Delhi – Leh is there any chance that things open up for tourists. Do reply. Thanks
Hello Vaibhav – It is not going to happen in June bro. Best do not plan at least until September.
Hi Vargis,
I plan to fly to leh on may 22nd 2021 and then rent a bike for internal travel around leh. Will there be any issues travelling on a bike? can you please guide me? thanks in advance.
Hi Vargis
What is the estimated time Manali leh will open this year considering the latest progress of road clear work ? Also when rohtang is likely to open up to Keylong ? I have a plan to keylong May mid..will that be possible ? Also manali leh possible around May 20 ?
Hi Vargis ,
Any update ?
It is a lockdown right now Bhai. No one has any idea when the work will resume or when will it all get back to normal.
Ok, the snow clearance is also locked down ? I thought the work is going on at high altitudes where there is no human being except BRO so chances of covid 19 is very remote.
Ladakh is among the hardest hit areas by the virus, over 10 cases have been found. Even a few soldiers are under quarantine there right now.
I know that…I am talking about Rohtang..that is himachal
Hi, we are planing to visit Leh through Manali in June 1st week. Is snow available in Rohtang Pass.
Yes there will be snow
Hi Bhai, I am planning to travel in 2nd week of November 2021 and that’s the only time of the year I got enough time to get it done. Can you please advise what all permits I need to get and if this is feasible?
last year in 2019, at what time the road was cleared for Manali to Leh Highway, and it would be great to plan the trip for Manali to leh route thought bike in the month of june during 10 to 25?
It opens by May end only. And yes, you can plan by bike in June
Hi, we are planning to visit from 16th May to 25th May 2020. Delhi- Srinagar- Leh- Manali- Delhi route. Will it be a good time to do it?
Not really. If you want to cover Manali route as well then i will recommend postponing your journey until June 1st week.
