Manali Leh Highway Status 2024 – 2025

by Vargis.Khan

The current Manali Leh highway status is CLOSED for all kinds of vehicles. The road was declared closed after heavy snowfall at Baralacha La in October and November. For now, you cannot travel between Manali and Leh by road until June next year. The road may get open in May, depending on the weather, but to be on the safer side, you should only plan your trip either in late May or early June at the earliest.

To organize your trip to Ladakh, book a taxi, rent a bike, or get the best hotel rates, you can contact Kunal @ 9910402252. From luxurious hotels to budget stays, he can help get you the best rates possible.

Planning a Trip to Leh Ladakh?

If you are planning a trip to Ladakh this year, then I would strongly recommend you to take a look at  How to Plan a Trip to Leh Ladakh – A Complete Travel Guide.

In this post, I have covered in detail each and every aspect of how you can manage your entire trip in a safe and hassle-free manner. Reading this, you will have information on things you must carry, clothes to pack, itinerary planning, what to see, and where to stay.

You will also have to apprise yourself with other information like the condition of the road, your accommodation choices, mode of transport, the best way to travel, etc.

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, either a car or motorcycle, then please take a look at Manali to Leh Road Route Map to familiarize yourself with the region. If you want to read a more detailed version of the map, then please take a look at Manali Leh Highway Guide: Map and route explanation.

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is what are some of the must-visit places as you travel from Manali to Leh. Well, the answer is that there are plenty of tourist attractions on the way and I have provided complete information on them in Tourist Places on Manali Leh Highway.

Below is some other information that can be of help while planning to travel on the Manali Leh Highway.

Best Time to Travel on Manali Leh Highway?

A lot of people rush to complete the journey as soon as the road is declared open. I will strongly advise against that for two reasons.

First, immediately after the Manali Leh highway opening, the road remains very unstable. It can be closed again temporarily for maintenance; which will result in you getting stranded on the route.

The second reason is the Manali to Leh road condition. It will be bad and broken in the initial days. You should give at least 2-3 weeks after the official Manali Leh highway opening time before you plan your own journey.

For a more detailed version of the information above, I will recommend reading When is the Best Time to Travel from Manali to Leh.

Is Manali Leh Highway open in May?

The chances of the route remaining in the month of May are very few. I think it is safe to assume that it will definitely not be open before the 20th of May. So if you must travel in May, then keep your plans towards the end of the Month.

Is Manali Leh Highway Open in October?

Yes, Manali Leh Highway remains open in October. But it is safe to travel only before the 10th of the month. There are 5 high-altitude passes on the route and all of them start to receive snow in October. So after the 10th and until the Manali Leh highway closing date, a journey on this road is both risky and dangerous.

Road Status from Manali to Leh

Last year, the road was a mix of good, bad, and ugly. Majorly it was just average with some very bad stretches in between.

Manali Leh Highway Closing Time

The road will remain open until the month of October and will be closed towards the end of the month.

Manali Leh Highway Permit Online

The only permit that you need for traveling from Manali to Leh is for Rohtang Pass. To know how you can get this permit either in person or online, please read How to Obtain a Permit for Rohtang Pass.

Hi I am planning for A trip from Manali on February 15th to Jispa and anyother places possible in that vicinity via Sissu ,Keylong , is it possible to do at that time on bike. Trip plan is for 5 days only
Or alternatively I thought I will just explore areas from Narkanda till pooh or so on the Spiti route, here plan to extend trip time to 7 days. Is it good time to explore on bike considering weather. Please suggest.

Hi, may I ask is the Leh-Manali highway open today? I’m planning to go to the Tso Kar and pass the tanglang la. Is it possible to go to tso kar ? Or is it possible to go up to tanglang la? Where does the road closure start from if it’s closed for the leh Manali highway at which point is the starting point of closure? Thank you

Hi I am going with my parents from Amritsar->Manali -> Leh roughly around 16-20 October 2023. We can take flights, but was told a bus enroute with a stop at Keylong would be nice. I am unable to find any public/private hire buses online. Is a taxi the only option for the said dates? Would the roads be open during second half of October? Is it worth a visit by flight?

October is too late to complete the journey by road. You are better off booking a flight

Haii,
I am planning to visit ladakh in august.. when i am study about innerline permit, the website for online application shows that
“All our Domestic tourists are hereby informed that there will be no further need of verifying the payment contribution slip at DM office.
Tourists can visit the areas directly after online payment and the payment slip in form of paf or hardcopy (whichever convenient) will be checked only at respective check posts.
It is mandatory to show your leh arrival boarding pass along with the permit.”
– is it a new update in the rules? Things really going according to this or should i visit the DC office for verifying documents like before?

My plan is to stay in Jispa for 3 nights, drive till Baralacha Pass which most probably will not happen based on the current situation. But plan to do Keylong, Sissu, Darcha and then back to Manali. Please advise.

Then yes, the plan is doable. But just make sure that you clarify this entire route with your cab driver and that he is expected to drop you in Manali. Sometimes, due to their own disputes, these guys do not allow cabs or bikes of other regions to enter their area

Thanks a lot for your Feedback and Advise, Yep i will check with Cab driver at Leh before booking.
Another plan I was thinking, to do Suru valley and Zanskar valley instead of Leh-Tso moriri.
it would be like Leh – Kargil- Suru valley – Zanskar valley (Padum) – Darcha – Manali.
1) Is road from kargil to Zanskar are open by mid of May ?
2) is road from Padum to Darcha doable via Xylo/Innova in Mid of May ?
3) I think i would need to change Cab at Kargil to go to Suru/Zanskar valley, Can same driver cover Suru/Padum/Darcha/Manali route ?

You are welcome

1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes

Kishoth June 23, 2022 - 6:45 am

We recently did this, but in the reverse order. Tso Moriri to Pangong Via Tsaga and Chushul. It is doable comfortably in a day. This route (mostly runs along with Chinese Border) had bad patches between Chushul and Nyoma.
There also exists another route via Chuchul-Kaksang La-Mahe (we did not try). From what I read, the road also bad patches between.

Hi Vargis
What is the estimated time Manali leh will open this year considering the latest progress of road clear work ? Also when rohtang is likely to open up to Keylong ? I have a plan to keylong May mid..will that be possible ? Also manali leh possible around May 20 ?

It is a lockdown right now Bhai. No one has any idea when the work will resume or when will it all get back to normal.

Ok, the snow clearance is also locked down ? I thought the work is going on at high altitudes where there is no human being except BRO so chances of covid 19 is very remote.

Ladakh is among the hardest hit areas by the virus, over 10 cases have been found. Even a few soldiers are under quarantine there right now.

Hi Bhai, I am planning to travel in 2nd week of November 2021 and that’s the only time of the year I got enough time to get it done. Can you please advise what all permits I need to get and if this is feasible?
