Sach Pass Status 2022 – Sach Pass Road Status

by Vargis.Khan

The current Sach Pass status 2022 is open from both Killar and Bairagarh sides. Due to the less amount of snow this year, the road was cleared way ahead of schedule. Usually, it is by early June that the pass becomes accessible but this year, it was declared open in the last week of April itself.

Do keep in mind though that the road across Sach Pass is always a serious challenge. There is still a lot of snow along the route and the condition of the road is bad. I will strongly advise waiting a few weeks before you plan your trip.

You can also follow me on Instagram and chat with me live there or subscribe to my YouTube channel and ask a question there to get the latest status of the road at the time of your travel.

If you are planning on visiting Sach Pass next year, then I will recommend taking a look at the following posts for information on how you can best plan your trip.

Historically, Sach Pass is usually the last pass to be declared open sometime in the month of June. It is also the first one to receive snow and get closed by late September or early October.

Sach Pass Road Status Today = CLOSED

Route Status
Dalhousie to Sach Pass Closed
Kishtwar Killar Road Closed
Keylong to Sach Pass Closed

The status of Sach Pass as of today is closed. The road was declared closed for vehicular traffic in the early days of October. A check post has been set up at Bairagarh and no vehicles are allowed beyond that. From the Keylong side, the road is accessible only until Killar.

Similarly, the road from Tandi to Kishtwar via Killar is closed as well. As of now, the Sinthan top is open and you can travel to Kishtwar but cannot cross Sach to get to Killar and Tandi. Planning a trip to Sach Pass is only open next year after June.

Updated – February 2nd

Sharing a recent picture of snowfall near Bairagarh. The estimated date of opening of Sach Pass right now will remain to be early June.

sach pass status 2020

Updated – January 27th

The entire Himalayan region is receiving heavy snow this year. More snow is expected in the coming months. It is highly unlikely that Sach Pass will open before June mid this year.

How far is Sach pass from Dalhousie?

Sach Pass is approximately 150 kilometers from Dalhousie. However, a day trip from Dalhousie to the pass and back can be made. You must ensure to start from Dalhousie to back it back by late evening.

Is Sach pass open in December?

No, Sach Pass remains closed in December.

Hello Vargis,
Kudos to you for putting up this information!!

We are planning Dalhousie—Chamba—Killar—Udaipur—Keylong in 2nd week of JUNE. No self drive, so would there be any shared taxis / HRTC running in this route? Plan to do this in 6 days if possible..
Thanks for your reply!

2. No. With so many days of stay at Keylong and Killar, you will be able to explore properly
3. 3 nights in Keylong is a bit much. 2 should be Ok
4. Kinnaur Valley is a good alternative

It is not open completely Sumit Bhai. There is a high chance of temporary closures and that is why I have not changed the status.
There is very little chance of rain in June 2nd week. It usually starts by end of June but you can never really tell anything these days with all the global warming.

Hello, I would like to take the Kishtwar to Udaipur route around the first or second week of May, through Killar. (bypassing Sach Pass). Will the route be open then? Roughly how difficult would the road conditions be for a RE Thunderbird? Thanks for any info.

Reply
Vargis.Khan April 29, 2022 - 7:29 am

The pass is partially open right now Sean so yes, there is a high chance that it may be all open by May second week. Road conditions in early season will be a bit difficult because of the melting snow.

Thanks Vargis. Curious which would you consider the tougher section. Kishtwar to Killar or Killar to Udaipur? Or are they roughly the same?

Also I see you have warned that Sach may still have temporary closures…As it is a fluid situation, and things likely change by the day, do you have any update on this? Would you think it safe to try around first week of May?

Thanks again for any info.

Hello Sean – Both of the routes are more or less the same. The pass has not been closed so far and is still open.

Seeking your help.

When would you get to know the official date/time frame of Sach Pass opening.

We are planning a motorcycle ride starting Saturday 29th May from Delhi and seeking to traverse Sach Pass within the next 5 days.

Please let me know if that would be possible (fingers crossed).

Thanks a lot.

1. Is Sach Pass open? and if ye,s then how is the road condition, if i have to drive myself from Chamba.?
2. I have a nexon Automatic on me. Would you be able to suggest if i shud drive it up to the pass?
3. if, in case, i plan to park my car in the middle of the trip, will i be able to get a shared taxi or a bike to go up to the pass?

Hi Vargis,
Thanks for all your posts, they are super helpful. We were planning to do ladakh but after having seen some pictures of the crowd there in June, kind of gave up the idea. Then I can across the killar kishwat saach pass trip idea, however I am still researching on this, Spiti is also kind of on my mind.

I have some questions .. your inputs will certainly help my convoluted mind …

1. How crowded does ladakh get in June (mid basically )? I had been to ladakh in September.. I truly enjoyed the trip mainly due to the solace we found. Huge crowd is a big no no for me. I always travel in shoulder seasons – does ladakh get unbearably crowded- are traffic jams due to excess crowds a common sight ? If I were to give crowds in September a 9/10 .. 10 being least crowded .. how crowded does ladakh get in June ?

2. Is there a way we can do Killar-kishwat- Saach pass – Spiti in about 12 days, we can take a flight to any airport . Also how are things in Kashmir now ? Is it safe to do this in June mid? Is Saach pass open during June mid ?
Note : mode of transport will be – Bike

This will kind of be our last adventures trip since many of my friends are about to leave abroad to never return .. hence it’s very important to make the most of it. sorry if my questions seem redundant or excessive .

Thanks for taking time to read and respond .

Hi Vargis,

We decided on doing the Spiti Circuit considering the crowds in ladakh. In this regard can you kindly help me with following info
1. We intend to leave from Chandigarh on 12th of June- Is it correct to understand that Spiti wouldn’t be too crowded at this point of this?
2. We have about 11 day- we want to do Spiti-Chandratal-Killar-Saach Pass-Kishtwar, could you please recommend an itinerary?
3. We want to do the cliff hanger trail hence included Killar-Kishtwar track .Since Kishtwar is in Jammu- are the conditions ok to take this track?
4. We are really confused on how to head back- we are basically flying into chandigarh- to end our trip do we exit from Srinagar since Kishtwar is about 5 hours from Srinagar or is there another way to get back to chandigarh? (We dont mind flying into one airport and flying out of another)
5. Would saach pass be open around 20 June?
6. Can we camp st Chandratal lake?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Anish garg June 6, 2020 - 12:33 pm

Yeah, spiti n kishtwar can be covered easily in 12 days.. you can come back from kishtwar directly to chandigarh no need to go srinagar and for dates you have call hotels available in killar or pangi those guys can update you about roads and recent conditions
