Chandratal Status 2024 – Chandratal Lake Road

by Vargis.Khan

The present Chandratal status is closed from both the Kaza and Manali sides. The road was closed earlier this month after heavy snowfalls started to occur early. The campsites too are all wrapped up now and there is no place to stay near Chandratal. A trip to the beautiful lake is only possible next year in May or June, depending on when the road opens.

To organize your trip to Chandratal Lake, book a taxi, rent a bike, or get the best accommodation rates, you can contact Kunal @ 9910402252.

If you have any questions, you can contact me on Instagram to chat with me or subscribe to my YouTube channel and ask a question there to get the latest status on the road.

Chandratal Road Status = OPEN

Route Status
Kaza to Chandratal Closed
Manali to Chandratal Closed
Kunzum Pass Closed

A few other articles that I would recommend reading and that can be helpful in visiting Chandratal are listed below.

Below is a picture of Chandratal Lake completely frozen and buried under snow.

chandratal status

Kaza to Chandratal Road Status

The road from Kaza to Chandratal gets open sometime in the month of May, around the 10th of it. The date is actually a little sooner than the entire Manali Kaza stretch gets open.

The route from the Kaza side becomes accessible and a day trip can easily be made. There will however be no campsites available and you will have to return to Kaza by evening. On the plus side, there is a high chance that you will find the lake half-frozen, like in the picture above.

Keep in mind though that the campsites at the lake will only be available by early June. The campsites remain available until the 10th of October and after that, there is no accommodation available anymore.

Though the road remains open a little longer after that and you can still make a day visit to the lake, you will not be able to stay there overnight.

Manali to Chandratal Road Status

The road from Manali to Chandratal only gets open only after the snow from Rohtang and Kunzum Pass has been removed completely. This only happens towards the end of May historically. To be on the safer side, assume the date of opening of the road as 20th May and not sooner than that.

Kunzum Pass Status

The status of Kunzum Pass is closed right now and it will only open after May 15th. There is a chance that it may even open sooner if it does not snow too much. But we will only find that out next year after the winter season has passed.

Rohtang Pass Status

The status of Rohtang Pass right now is closed and it will open sometime in the month of May after BRO is able to clear the snow completely from both Manali and Koksar sides.

When does Chandratal Lake Open?

Chandratal Lake is declared open in the first week of June after the snow from Kunzum Pass and Chandratal Road is cleared. If there was not too much snow and BRO was able to complete the work faster, Chandratal may open by late May as well.

Chandratal Status – Conclusion

I hope the information above on Chandratal status was of help.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below. You can also contact me on Instagram to chat with me live or subscribe to my YouTube channel and ask a question there.

The road is already open and it will be unless the weather turns bad again. It is doable in TUV 300 as well but that road is extremely bad so drive carefully

Hi Vargis, thank you for keeping this page updated.

I see that you have mentioned in one of the comments that it is open now. One of my friends had visited 4-5 days back and it was closed. Also, in the table on this page, it is mentioned that roads are closed.
Chandratal Road Status = CLOSED

So we are bit confused.

We plan to travel from Kaza to Chandratal around 7th / 8th July.

Can you advise on the status?

Thank you in advance.

Thanks for pointing that out bhai. I updated the status from my phone and missed changing it in the table down below.

It is all open, campsites are functional as well. It is a tricky road so temporary closures for a few hours or a day every now and then are common.

Can u tell me the further limit of Chandratal being open? I mean when does the road close?
Also, can I pitch my own tent at the designated camping areas?

Thank you Sumit. The road is usually closed in October first week, around 10th of the month. And yes, you can pitch your own tent as well in a vacant area

I am also travelling at the same time, Chandrataal didn’t accept Camp Booking in May, so we deferred our tour, we will reach Chandrataal 4th of June, call them before you plan.

What is your suggestion Vargis Bhai ?

Reply
Vargis.Khan February 21, 2023 - 12:24 pm

Good decision Diptendu Bhai. Campsites do not get functional at Chandratal until June first week usually.

The tents were to be closed after 8th Oct. That’s what Parasol boys told me when I stayed at their camps on 7th Oct. Most of the tents had already packed up before 5th Oct.

Hi , I am planning a family trip to kaza . I will travel to kaza via Narkanda and reach kaza on 20th June . Plan to stay there till 24 th June and then travel to Manali for 1-2 days before starting for Delhi on 26th morning. I also plan to do chandertaal . I shall be travelling on Vitara brezza and also have a pet dog along . Should I do chandertaal while going to Manali or should I come back to kaza.

Can I also stay at a camp site near chandertaal , is it ok considering I have a pet with me.

Look forward to hear from you.

Hi Vargis. I had posted on your Sach Pass page earlier. Recently completed Sach Pass and am near Keylong now. Was wondering are there any camp sites right now open at Chander Tal?

Also how would you rate the road conditions of the stretch from Gramphu to Batal in comparison to the sach pass/killar to Udaipur route? Are they similarly difficult?

And if one is not crossing Rohtang (i.e., approaching from Keylong), are any permits required?

Thanks again for any info.

Hi Sean – Some of the Chandratal camps are open now. The route between Gramphoo and Batal is a bit easier than the Sach pass route actually. No permits needed if you are not crossing Rohtang.

Hi Vargis,

Kunzum la is open for LMVs and two wheelers (since May 1). I crossed Kunzum la enroute Jispa from Kaza earlier today (May 7).

Chandrataal is closed as per both the locals in Batal and Kaza/Kee, as well as the officer manning the Losar checkpost. Said officer mentioned that while Rohtang was opened, it is temporarily closed due to a landslide yesterday (May 6).
