Spiti Valley Bus Service : Frequency, Fare & Time Table

by Vargis.Khan

If you too are planning a trip to Spiti valley by public transport, below is some information on the Spiti valley bus service including the timings and fare per person. Unlike Ladakh, Spiti Valley is better connected when it comes to a regular bus service. HRTC runs several daily buses throughout the region and finding one to your desired destination is not going to be a problem at all.

Spiti Valley, which until the 90s was not even open for tourists, is now becoming one of the most well-known tourist destinations of our country. Thousands of people travel each year here, some by their own vehicle and some by public transport.

Shimla to Kaza Bus

There are two different bus services available from Shimla to Kaza. One starts from Shimla in the morning and another one in the evening.

The morning Bus from Shimla to Kaza leaves early in the morning between 6 – 7 AM. It reaches Reckong Peo by evening and halts there for the night. The next day, you will then board another bus from Reckong Peo to Kaza. This is a daily bus service and you can board this bus for your complete journey to Kaza, no matter what all places you want to cover in between.

For example, if Sarahan was on your itinerary, you can get down at Jeori, go to Sarahan, stay there for the night. The next day, you can come back to Jeori at the same time you reached here the day before and board the same Kaza bound bus from Shimla. Let us say Nako is next on your list then you can get down at Nako on Day 2 and board the same bus on Day 3 towards Kaza.

There are two evening buses starting from Shimla for Reckong Peo; one at 6:15 PM and the next one at 7:45 PM. This bus travels at night and reaches Peo in the morning. From Peo then, you will change the bus and board the one for Kaza.

Reckong Peo to Kaza Bus

Both the buses I explained above are actually for Shimla to Reckong Peo. The only difference is of the time. You can either board the one in the morning, reach Peo by evening, and rest for the night before you board the second Reckong Peo to Kaza bus. Or you can board either of the evening buses from Shimla, travel at night, and then change the bus at Peo to catch the one for Kaza the next morning. In this manner, you will actually be traveling non-stop from Shimla all the way to Kaza.

The Reckong Peo bus starts from the Peo bus stand at around 6 – 7 AM and reaches Kaza between 3 – 4 PM. So if you boarded the evening bus from Shimla, you will actually be in a local ordinary Bus for almost 24 hours till Kaza.

Manali to Kaza Bus

Shimla to Sangla Bus

A daily bus for Sangla starts from Shimla in the morning at 6.30 AM. If Chitkul was part of your itinerary, you will have to catch this bus to reach all the way to Sangla and from there, you will have to board a shared taxi to Chitkul. The fare for this bus would be around Rs. 150 and the shared taxi from Sangla to Chitkul would cost about Rs. 50.

It is just one bus and it usually gets a bit crowded so ensure you are reaching well in time to grab a set. If you were not boarding it from Shimla then you may not find a seat at all. It starts from Shimla at 6.30, reaches Narkanda at 10 AM and Sangla at 5 PM.

If you are plan carefully and match your timings, you can actually cover your entire trip through the above-mentioned 3 buses. Shimla to Kaza to Manali can be covered by boarding these every day and Chitkul can be covered via Sangla Bus.

All the major towns get covered by these buses. Some places like Kibber, Komik, and Chandratal are a little off the route but information on how to reach there is further covered in the article.

Manali to Chandratal Bus

There is no direct bus from Manali to Chandratal. You will have to board the Kaza bound bus and get down at Chandratal diversion near Kunzum top. From the diversion, you will either have to walk the 14 kilometers towards Chandratal or hitchhike.

Wait at Gramphoo for another hour or so for the Kaza bus coming from Manali. This bus will reach Gramphoo at around 9.00 – 9.30 AM where you can board it to reach Kaza.

Kaza to Key Monastery Bus

There are several shared taxis that go this way or you can even hitchhike as well. Key Monastery is just at a distance of 10 kilometers from this way and you can easily find a shared cab from Kaza. If however, you could not find one, then a Kibber bound Bus leaves from Kaza at 4 PM and passes right next to Key Monastery.

Hello Vargis,

I find online tickets for Delhi -> Shimla -> Reckong Peo in https://online.hrtchp.com/
But not for Reckon Peo -> Kaza or Kaza -> Reckon Peo. Is there a way I can book tickets online? Just concerned if I may not find seats in the bus.

Fyi, I am planning for a trip in last week of October.

There is no online booking for that bus Vinod. You will have to buy a ticket on the spot and find a seat.

Hello, very informative post. Thank you.
The early morning bus from Reckong Peo to kaza, goes all the way to kaza on the same day? Or halts at Tabo for night?
If it halts at Tabo, is there a way to reach Dhankhar gompa the same evening? I feel a night at Tabo is a waste.. I would rather spend that night at Dhankhar and reach kaza the next day. How can I reach Dhankar? What is the transport availabile?

Are the buses between Manali and Kaza operational from May? I know in winters due to snow that route is closed and one can visit Kaza via Reckong Peo.
Thanks

Hi Priyanka – The bus starts as soon as the road clears and BRO allows civilian traffic. It is not operational right now but since the pass is open, my guess is that the bus will surely start in May, provided that the COVID situation doesn’t force the government tourist entry in the region like last year

Thanks a lot for providing such amazing content. I have travelled to lahaul and Spiti a lot in the past and my last trip was in 2011. I am planning a trip to Spiti this year provided the COVID19 situation improves. My query is regarding the arrival time of hrtc bus in kaza from Manali -. You had mentioned the bus reaches kaza by 4 pm. Considering the huge traffic jams due to tourist visiting rohtang in recent years, do you still feel one can reach kaza by 4 pm.

Hello,

Thank you for this beautiful, comprehensive blog. I’ve been at it for more than 5 hours now and I have planned my entire trip to Spiti with my students. I am a class teacher for grade 6 and I will be travelling with 8 of my students in the month of September, simply to study Geology and Astronomy, outdoors.

I have created the itinerary based on the details and timings on your blog. I couldn’t find spiti local buses online of the internet, to verify the timings.

I want to reconfirm if there is a bus from Kaza to Shimla in the evening at 7pm as you have mentioned here at the end of your blog.

Also, below is my plan. Any inputs will help!

Day 1 – 16 Sep, Mon
From Delhi – Catch the 8pm Bus to Shimla.

Day 2 – 17 Sep, Tue
Reach Tutikandi bus stop,Shimla around 7am. Take the 6:15 pm bus from Shimla to Reckong Peo.

Day 3 – 18 Sep, Wed
Reach Reckong Peo in the morning. Explore this village in the day. Take the 1pm bus to Kaza. Reach Kaza late night. Check in at hotel.

Day 4 – 19 Sep, Thu
Take the 4pm bus to Kibber (Takes 1 hour). View of the Spiti River along the way. Explore the village, Monastery. Homestay with locals.
Stargazing at night.

Day 5 – 20 Sep, Fri

Stargazing at night.

Day 6 – 21 Sep, Sat
Explore the fossiliferous regions in and around Kibber.
Stargazing at night.

Day 7 – 22 Sep, Sun
Study during the day, outdoors.
Stargazing early morning. Catch Sunrise today.

Day 8 – 23 Sep, Mon

Take 7am bus back to Kaza (Takes 1 hour). Check for buses available to Shimla. Either morning or evening.

Hello Sumana Sethuraman,

Sharing my experience after my recent visit to reckong peo Kalpa and chitkul from -delhi

its nice and brave of you to take the children to such a tour at young age. Just a advise as you are taking 8 kids with you so total you are 9. where ever possible do an online bus booking and hotel booking as it will be difficult for you to do 9 people booking for seats in ordinary bus on the spot. Also luggage will be quite a lot per person as it would be little cold in night times in Kalpa and more in Kaza. Will the kids be able to carry that luggage for so many days.

Unless the cost is issue you can/should do tempo traveler from delhi/Shimla to cover all the places which will avoid you from all the hassle of bus booking and you can stop it anywhere where you want.

A semi deluxe bus HRTC bus runs from chandigarh at 17: 50 in evening to reckong peo and reaches reckongpeo before 8 AM. fare 780 Rs around its seats are little better than the ordinary ones. I had gone on this bus in June 2019. It’s a 14 hour journey as per HRTC site but we reached earlier then that.

https://online.hrtchp.com/oprs-web/avail/services.do#

Sharing one number of Dhaba owner at Kalpa who was very helpful and guided us 9816810053
After Rampur the roads are not good and very bumpy.

Road to Pooh is very bad. kaza was not open till june end as there was still SNOW there. if you are returning from same route to delhi you will have to break the journey else it will become very tiring for all.

Always advisable to reach your destination either early morning or by afternoon so as to avoid getting lost in the darkness of night and looking for hotels. So take your bus for morning time to reach your destination by afternoon/evening

If you leave by afternoon bus from reckongpeo you will not be able to reach kibber/ kaza same day. Leave in early morning bus to reach by evening.

Not aware if any bus is there from Kaza to Shimla but there is direct bus from reckong peo to Shimla and to delhi as well. I will not recommend taking direct bus to delhi for 20 hours in ordinary bus it will be too tiring so breaking the journey would be ideal.

Hello! I had two queries:

1. Would you be able to give any details on travel from Kaza to Losar? Is there a bus/shared cabs that frequent between these two places?

2. We have planned to spend a night in a homestay in Kibber and leave for Losar the next day. Would it be possible to travel to Losar directly from Kibber or would it be better to come to Kaza and then head to Losar.

Thank you!

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 14, 2019 - 2:07 pm

1. You can board the Kaza Manali Bus and get down at Losar. Shared cabs too will be easily to find for Losar.
2. Better come back to Kaza. Frequency of transport between Kibber to Losar will be rare.

Is there any HRTC bus running between these routes or I have to go back to manali and then have to board a bus to Leh in the morning at 4.30 A.M just like I did it for Kaza. Your suggestions are always welcome.

For kaza to keylong.. if I board the kaza- Manali bus and get down at gramphu, will I get a bus/ shared taxi from gramphu to keylong?..
I want to then take the morning bus from keylong to Leh.

Hi Vargis. Amazing writing on the travel. You have made it look so comfortable for everyone. I am planning my trip through your experience :). I have a question. I would be travelling via public transport only till Kaza and will reach there around Oct 5. Not sure how to visit Kibber, Hikkim and other villages from there. Since we are going to be 2 people, who will not opt for bike, what should we look for there?

Hello Vargis Bhai,

I hope you are doing well.

First of all, thanks for putting together this incredible blog.
We are planning to travel to Spiti valley via Shimla as per the itinerary below using public transport only, starting on 8th September from Shimla.

I have three questions:

1. Is this itinerary doable solely via public transport?
2. Is there any place in the itinerary you can recommend us to omit/add?
3. How is the current weather condition at the moment?

Our tentative itinerary:

Saturday, 8th Sept : Reach Shimla from Delhi
Sunday, 9th Sept : Take a bus to Sangla and stay there overnight.
Monday, 10th Sept : Reach Reckong Peo and stay there overnight (visit Kalpa during the day)
Tuesday, 11th Sept : Take the Kaza bound bus and get down either at Nako or Tabo (please suggest which location is better)
Wednesday, 12th Sept : Start from Nako/Tabo and reach Dhankar (overnight at Dhankar)
Thursday, 13th Sept : Start early from Dhakar and reach Kaza. Sightseeing in Kaza covering Langza, Komic, Ki Monastery, Kibber and Hikkim. Overnight at Kaza.
Friday, 14th Sept : Start from Kaza and reach Chandratal (Overnight at Chandratal)
Saturday, 15th Sept : Start from Chandratal and reach Manali
Sunday, 16th Sept : Manli to Delhi

Thanks,
AD

Hi AD Bhai,

Yes your itinerary is easily doable by public transport. You will get the bus without any problem. I find Nako to be better than Tabo. It is raining now around Shimla and Manali so please pack accordingly.

Hello Vargis, I have few questions for you. Could you say to me when does bus leave Shimla to Kaza? When the bus come to Pooh? When the bus leave Pooh to Kaza? Do you think that these buses are crowded? Should I buy ticket before? Do I need book some place in Pooh for sleeping per night? And do you now how much does bus ticket cost? Thank you very much for your answer:-)

1. Shimla to Kaza bus leaves in the morning
2. Arrives at Pooh the next day at around 10-11 AM
3. Impossible to predict but usually not.
4. You will have to buy ticket on the spot.
5. No need to book
6. Cost from where to where?

Hello. Is it really safe to travel to Spiti Valley via bus during 15 August – 31 August? I’ve seen a lot of Himachal Pradesh news with buses falling into gorge and valleys and stuff.

Reply
Vargis.Khan July 31, 2018 - 3:32 pm

That really is a tough question to answer. No one can guarantee whether it is safe or not. Yes, you are right. Lot of people die up in the mountains each year in accidents, landslides etc during monsoon. I guess it is a risk you will have to take.

Hi KHAN,

This is the best blog about spiti valley. Can you please help with these question:

1) What are the timings for public transportation available from Shimla to Kafnu?

2) After my trek I have 3 days(around 27th July) to spend. What will be the climate around that time in Kaza?

3) Is it possible to rent a bike in Kaza to roam around and see places? If not what are the other possible options available here?

Thank you in advance.

2. July is mostly warm at days but cold at nights in Kaza.
3. Ye you can easily find a bike on rent in Kaza.

Hi,

I’m planning to fly from New Delhi to Srinagar, then take a bus to Leh to visit Pangong Tso Lake and Tso Moriri. Is it a bus going from Zorkot to Kaza? And then From Kaza to the Flower Valley? We will be there early october.
Thanks a lot for your answer.

There is no direct bus from Karzok to Kaza. You will have to go back to Leh, then come to Keylong from Leh and then look for a mode of commute from Keylong to Kaza.

In March you can only do Shimla to Kaza and back. Chandratal and Manali – Kaza route will be closed in March and only opens by May. And yes, you will find snow in Spiti in March

thanks for your reply, is pin valley, kibber, chandrataal lake open to visit from kaza in march?. that is,if i visit and return via kaza kalpa route only. will bus services be open from kaza to these places in march. And is march a good time to visit to see snowfall, or February. i am very interested to see chandrataal lake in snow.

Reply

Chandratal will not be open in either of these months. Pin valley and Kibber will be accessible. Bus service will be available as well depending on the weather and Feb is actually better in terms of snow.

Vargis.Khan July 6, 2018 - 4:38 am

Is your itinerary good? Yes
Is it doable? Definitely
Should you proceed? Yes
Is there anything that can disrupt the plan? It is monsoon season bro and who can really predict mother nature? But yes, you will be in a Bus so you will at least not run the risk of getting wet. People are still traveling to Spiti is what I can tell you for sure.

Hello Vargis Bhai,

After a failed attempt in May, I am finally set to visit Chandrataal and few destination in Ladakh during this July

Below is my schedule

Saturday Delhi to Manali
Sunday Manali to Batal then Chandrataal
Monday Chandrataal to Batal then keylong
Tuesday Keylong to Leh
Wednesday Leh to Turtuk
Thursday Turtuk
Friday Turtuk to Leh
Saturday Leh to Hanle
Sunday Hanle to Leh

Vargis Bhai, Can you suggest by what time i need to be at batal to get Kaza to Manali bus 😐 after returning from chandrataal

Also, Can I get bus at Gramphuu or Rohtaang which will take me to Keylong as I need to catch bus from there next day

Awaiting your responses 🙂 Thank You

Reply
Vargis.Khan June 29, 2018 - 6:21 pm

Bhai the bus from Kaza starts early in the morning and from there, it won’t take more than 3 – 4 hours to get to Batal so make sure you are there before 10 AM.

Finding a bus could be hard and may take time at Gramphoo but you can always board a shared taxi or hitch hike to Keylong.

You will also have to add a day at Leh to get permits after you arrive here.

Mayur Gijam June 29, 2018 - 7:16 pm

Actually after reaching Leh, I was planning to take Leh to Diskit morning Bus then Diskit to Turtuk afternoon bus… Same for hanle(if permitted)

Vargis.Khan July 2, 2018 - 6:00 pm

Yes you will still need the permits Mayur Bhai. Permits are issued on per person basis and not per vehicle. So even if you were crossing the check post on foot, you will still need to produce your permit.

Mayur Gijam July 2, 2018 - 6:15 pm

Ohh :/ this was something which I didn’t figured

Would I also need permit while crossing Rohtang pass in Kullu to Kaza bus I would be boarding from Kullu

Vargis.Khan July 2, 2018 - 6:18 pm

Rohtang permit on the other hand is issued on per vehicle basis and not per person. So if you were in a bus, you do not have to worry about Rohtang permit.

Mayur Gijam July 10, 2018 - 11:02 am

Vargis Bhai can you suggest on Keylong to Leh bus 😐

As I will hitchhike from Batal to Keylong then I need to take bus on next day from Keylong to Leh

As I read in your blog there is one bus from Keylong to Leh.. I am not worried about whether I will get that morning bus from Keylong or not

Vargis.Khan July 10, 2018 - 1:40 pm

You are right Mayur Bhai. There is just one early mooring HRTC bus from Keylong bus stand.

Mayue Gijam July 10, 2018 - 1:53 pm

Can I board that bus even if I don’t have ticket from Manali or as mentioned Manali people will have their seats first mentioned on their tickets or Manali to Leh is alltogether different bus than Keylong to Leh 😐

Vargis.Khan July 10, 2018 - 2:09 pm

No there is no allotment system. You just buy the ticket from the counter and board the bus. Just make sure you are there at the bus stand early in the morning.

A great read! I am planning to travel to spiti from Manali on 23rd April. Since you mentioned busses are not functional now, suggest me the cheapest mode to travel to spiti valley from manali. I am a solo girl and hence want some safe options to travel. Also suggest me some alternative travel plan to Kaza from Delhi in case route from Manali is not accessible. Thanks in advance.

Reply
Vargis.Khan April 11, 2021 - 7:45 am

Hi Tani – The only other way is to travel is by shared cabs. You can get those from the Manali bus stand itself. If you want my opinion, delay your plan by a month or two, please. If you do plan to go, make sure you book your stay well in advance and carry your COVID Negative report done within the last 96 hours. A lot of hotels are still not accepting guests due to the rising covid situation.

What places would you suggest ? We intend to cover Kaza Key monastery chandratal lake and a couple of nearby villages.

We also have a few questions regarding a night’s stay at Chandrataal. Since we will be going there from Kaza by bus,we will be completely dependent on hitching a ride up to the camp grounds. Do you think that is a safe option?

The road will be open by 8th June but not sure whether the bus service will start or not. It depends on the weather really. Hitchhiking is your only choice to Chandratal because there is no mode of transport available here. It is safe though.

On 9th taking bus for Sarahan (night stay there), next on 10th to Chitkul via. Sangla and to stay the night at Chitkul. Then on 11th move to Kalpa via. Reckong peo, from there to Nako on 12th and next on 13th to Kaza for two days stay. On 15th from Kaza to Chandratal via. Losar, Kumzum la, intend to stay night beside the lake. Then on 16th to Keylong for two days. And on 18th to Manali via. Rohtang pass, thereafter return to Kolkata via. Delhi. Is this itinerary realistic? Please suggest me. Hi Sir,

Beautifully written and very informative. Sir, i am going to spiti in the month of july via shimla. I tried to search and book a ticket to kaza from shimla, but there are no buses that serve this route on the HRTC website. Can you let me know, if we can book tickets in advance and if yes, how. Also, if you can help me with the frequency of buses to kaza from Shimla or Recongpeo.

(bus often run starting June 15 you mentioned above) If there’s no bus that time, can we take a share jeep from Kaza to Manali or Keylong? And also can we take a share jeep from Manali to Leh after June 10 this year??

Hello Rakesh Bhai,

There is really no snow anywhere near Manali this year. You will not find any snow for a 2-3 hours journey. Your only chance is to take a drive towars Rohtang Pass, go as far as the checkpost and see if you are able to see some snow there.

Kye monastery is quite close to Kaza, about 10 odd kilometers. You do not need to wait for a bus. Just hitchhike or board a shared taxi going that way. Even if you start walking leisurely, it won’t take you long to get there. Lot of people travel to Key so hitch hiking too won’t be difficult.

Hello Sir,

I am planning a solo trip to Spiti with some road journey and some trekking in the next week. I plan to come via Shimla and exit via Manali and have thought of the following itinerary.
12th Aug – Shimla to Rekong Peo
13th Aug – Rekong Peo to Tabo
14th Aug- Tabo and around and reach Dhankar in the evening
15th Aug – Dhankar lake, stay at Dhankar
16th Aug – Dhankar to Lalung
17th Aug – Lalung to Demul / Koumik
18th Aug – Koumik to Langza via Hikkim
19th Aug – Langza to Kaza – day trip to Chicham
20th Aug –Kaza to Manali, and Manali to Delhi

Wanted your opinion on whether I will save time travelling to Kaza via Manali both sides – particularly since there have been flash floods due to cloud burst last week around Manali.

Thanks in advance,
Vishi

Reply
Vargis.Khan August 8, 2017 - 1:59 pm

Hello Vishi, if you go from Manali, you can save a couple of days. I am guessing you are traveling by public transport? If yes, then it makes sense to go from Manali and come back the same route since you are covering mostly Spiti only, not Kinnaur or PIN valleys.

Reply
vishibansalyahoo August 8, 2017 - 3:39 pm

Hello Mr. Khan,

Thanks for your prompt reply, yes I will be travelling by public trapnsport. I tried doing the math as per your suggestion, I waste a day at Manali, since I cannot reach early enough to catch the bus to Kaza, and following the same itinerary backwards, I will be on Tabo on the 19th, and I cannot reach Kaza the same day to take the bus to Manali. May be I am wrong in calculation, but I guess reaching via Manali is not working primarily because of buses reaching late from Delhi. I will be able to take a bus only around 8:30 pm, and will reach late morning. Plus the time to travel back to Kaza… So I guess, if the road via Shimla is not too bad, I might stick to this plan. What do you think?

Warm regards,
Vishi

Reply
Vargis.Khan August 8, 2017 - 5:02 pm

Hello Vish – You are right. You could have saved a day if you were catching the Manali to Kaza bus on 12th itself. If that is not possible then follow the itinerary you already have planned.

Hello Arjun – I am sorry but I do not have a definite answer on whether or not they will allow cycles on the bus. These are ordinary road transport corporation government buses so in all probability, you should be able to put your cycles on the roof of the bus. There is no direct bus to Taboo, you will have to catch the one for Kaza that starts early from Shimla and then get down at Tabo next day. Once again, there is no direct shared taxi from Shimla to Kaza. You will have to change cabs at several places.

Vargis.Khan June 12, 2017 - 6:58 pm

Cannot really comment on the availability of the seats, depends on the rush. It is like the same way you will board a city bus, may or may not get a seat. If you are boarding from Kaza, reach early in the morning and you should be able to secure yourself a seat. If you miss the bus, the only other option is in the form of shared taxis.

You are welcome. There is no direct Delhi to Kaza Bus. Best choice that you have is to reach ISBT Delhi, catch a bus to Shimla from there and board another bus from Shimla Bus stand for Kaza.

Bus tickets are available on the spot. Just board the bus and the conductor will collect the money from you, handing over the ticket.
