Rohtang Pass is definitely the prime attraction of a trip to Manali. On average, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year which kind of proves that for everyone, a trip to Manali is incomplete without visiting Rohtang. Some people drive on their own while a lot of others will hire a taxi or travel by Manali to Rohtang Pass Bus. If you are planning a trip to Manali by public transport anytime soon and Rohtang Pass is on your mind, below is information on how you can travel from Manali to Rohtang Pass by Bus.

Manali to Rohtang Pass by Bus
The bus service from Manali to Rohtang starts after the pass gets declared open sometime in May. There are two kinds of buses that operate on this route. One is run by Himachal Pradesh Tourist Development Corporation (HPTDC) and other by Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC).
The HPTDC bus is a deluxe one started for the sole purpose of taking tourists from Manali to Rohtang and bringing them back. The HRTC bus however is an ordinary one and not just for Rohtang Pass. This bus actually runs all the way till Keylong in Lahaul Valley and locals here use it for their daily commute.

Manali to Rohtang Pass Bus Timings
HPTDC operates two daily buses to Rohtang Pass and both start from Manali in the morning, around 8 AM. These buses are available every day except Tuesdays when Rohtang Pass is closed for tourists. The HRTC bus however remains available on all 7 days. There are three daily HRTC buses from Manali to Keylong, starting at 4, 5, and 6 AM.
Manali to Rohtang Pass Bus Fare
Fare of HPTDC Bus is Rs. 300 to Rs. 350 per person. Traveling by HRTC bus will cost you about Rs. 60 – Rs. 70 per person.
Manali to Rohtang Pass Bus Booking
You must book your ticket a day in advance at Himachal Tourism office on Mall Road. It is located near Hotel HPTDC Kunzum.
Manali to Rohtang Pass Bus Booking Online
There is no online booking portal available. You will have to reach Himachal Tourism office in person and buy a ticket for the next day.
Manali to Rohtang Pass By Bus – HPTDC & HRTC
Both the HPTDC and HRTC buses have their own advantages and disadvantages. If you travel by HPTDC bus, you will be traveling in a luxury bus that will take you there and bring you back to Manali. However it will cost you more than HRTC Bus.

If you travel by HRTC bus, you can travel all the way till Rohtang top and get down there since this bus crosses Rohtang to reach Keylong. This way you will end up paying just about Rs. 60-70; way less than what you will pay traveling by HPTDC bus (fare + pony charges).
Drawbacks of traveling by HRTC bus is that it is just an ordinary bus, stuffed with locals going that way so the ride may get a lot uncomfortable. Second is that it will drop you to Rohtang Pass and continue to Keylong which means you have no sure way of getting back to Manali. Biggest problem however is that the driver or conductor may even refuse to take you in this bus. Ideally this bus is for people wanting to go beyond Rohtang Pass so you may not get a seat in it.
Private Taxi for Rohtang Pass
If you would however like to hire a taxi, then you can do so at Himachal Taxi Operators Union office at either Bus stand or HPTDC office at Mall Road. For more details, please take a look at How to Book a Taxi in Manali for Rohtang.
Rohtang Pass Taxi Fare
Depending on the kind of vehicle you chose, a taxi would cost you anywhere between Rs. 1200 to Rs. 1500. These taxis too however will only go till Gulaba (snow point).

Conclusion
In my opinion, if you want to travel to Rohtang Pass then either hire a taxi or travel by HRTC Bus. The HPTDC bus will drop you at a distance from snow point from where if you hire a pony than it will cost you more than what a taxi would in total. If you walk then it is inconvenient and not really the vacation you came for. A taxi however will take you all the way till snow point.
If you travel by HRTC Bus, then you get a ride all the way till Rohtang top as both the HPTDC bus and taxi will not take you beyond snow point. The conductor may refuse to take you but just request and persuade him a little. Before you leave Manali though, inquire about the bus that comes back from Keylong to Manali.
Get down at Rohtang top, spend some time; and wait for the Keylong bus to reach back Manali. Another way around this that you hitchhike your way back or catch a shared taxi coming from Lahaul valley to Manali. A reader recently travelled this way; went to Rohtang top by HRTC bus and came back hitchhiking. In peak tourist season, there is a regular traffic movement on the road and you can easily find someone to hitchhike with.

Hi Shreyans – The bus takes you all the way to the top and then you can walk around. There is a lot of tourist rush in Manali and that is why buses are all packed. The only way to visit right now is either rent a bike or a taxxi

Hi Vargis, I am arriving Manali on 22nd May (Evening) by own car. I have checked but Permit is not available for 23rd May. Also, as of today, Rohtang Pass is not yet open. Its open only till Marhi.

It is not even open till Marhi now Ketan. A landslide blocked it entirely. Will take a few days before it gets reopened.

It depends on the weather but usually there is snow in the nearby areas at this time. There is no Bus available for sightseeing in Manali. You will have to rent a private taxi.

Rohtang will most probably be closed by November so you won’t be able to plan. And yes, you can both rent a taxi and motorcycle from Srinagar to visit Rohtang.

You cannot come back the same day if that is what you are asking. You will reach Keylong and come back the next day to Manali.

They are charging 7000 for alto from manali to rohtang so for two of us it will really be costly. Is it true that both hptdc bus and taxis stop before the snow point at s common point. Hi Chandra Prakash – The bus takes a couple of hours at most. Yes the taxis are way too costly. Their rates just keep increasing and in peak tourist season, they can even charge up to Rs. 15,000. The online booking you are talking about could be a private operator.

Mayur Bhai Abhi Rohtang khula nahi hai toh aap sirf Marhi tak jaoge gaadi se. Marhi se aap ek horse rent karoge aur phir aur 6-7 kms aage jaane par snow milegi. Rohtang Pass ummeed hai ke 16 ke aas paas khul jaayega par abhi pakka nahi. HPTDC bus abhi shuru nahi hui hai toh aapko cab se hi jaana padega. Marhi tak aapko arund 5000 se 7000 ke beech cab wala charge karega

In mid June’18, I will be travelling from Delhi to Manali in my Honda City car with total two riders. Stay at Manali for 3 nights and then off to Leh in public bus / private taxi. Few questions:
(1). Is it advisable to visit Manali attractions in my personal car or by using local taxi?
(2). If I visit Rohtang pass and return to Manali in my personal car then do I need a permit?
(3). Most important question: Is there a place in Manali (or nearby) where I can park my car for 10 days?
1. Use your own car to visit nearby places at Manali. A taxi there will cost you way too much in tourist season.
2. Yes you will need to get a permit.
3. Not sure about any paid parking there. You may have to talk to some hotel and leave your car in their parking.

The HPTDC bus starts at 8 AM which you can use but the bus service to Rohtang will probably not be available by May 5th. The Pass is not even open right now.

2. Bhai ab ye toh driver pe depend karta hai. Main recommend karunga ke ek local Manali se hi driver kar lo. Ek bande ka number de raha hoon neeche, meri pehchan ka hai. Baat kar lena agar taxi karva sakta hai toh. Mera naam le dena, discounted rate par karva dega Manali and Chandigarh dono se hi with a good driver.

Last week i contacted to manali taxi union office they said that its cost about 12 to 14 thousand per taxi as it seems very costly while we can’t take risk on travel with hptdc and hrtc buses coz both have itself drawbacks as u mentioned above

Zafar Bhai – Walaikum As-Salam. There is no third option really except for either booking a cab or traveling by taxi. The only other thing I can think of is to rent motorcycles from Manali but I do not think you will be keen on doing that.

No Prakhar Bhai. Rohtang Permit is issued for vehicles, not per person. So if you are traveling by Bus, you do not need to get a permit.

No snow is Dharamshala and Dalhousie as well. You can however go to Mcleodganj and go trekking towrds Triund. There is plenty of snow there but it is a long trek.

I am not sure about the sleepers but there are several overnight volvos from Delhi to Manali Farhan Bhai. Just google it and you will get details of several operators.

Hello Sukanya – You can take the daily bus from Manali till Rohtang. By June the pass will be open and the bus service will be operational as well.

3. You can cross over to Keylong, stay there for the night and come back the next day. You will have to get a travel permit for Rohtang Pass in this case.

No you do not need permit for Gulaba. The check post is there somewhere near Gualaba so no permit needed until that point. For Marhi yes you will need the permit.

I booked Leh Permit online payment done got the collection receipt permit Id these are enough for me to travel in Leh there is no need to go anywhere in Leh to get permit after this or anything else remaining to go and collect?why i am asking because i am reaching Leh on 13th july night next day is saturday I had a bus to pangong early in the morning as u mentioned so if there is anything remaining to collect for permit i am going to miss the bus as that Permit office in Leh opens at 9 am so please conform about my online permit that i got or is there anything else to collect ?

Hello Mr. Kalwani – Yes you can rent a bike in Ladakh. Safety aspect will depend on how experience a rider you are. If you have done some riding and have decent enough experience, then yes it will be safe. Cost will depend on which bike you chose to rent. Yes you can easily get a bus ticket Mr. Wankhede. You will have to buy the ticket for HPTDC bus a day in advance though.

Thank you for your kind words.
1. This bus is not available in winters.
2. In winters, they shift the snow point quite close to Manali as a matter of fact, near Gulaba check post so the distance is not really that great. You will have to reach Manali taxi stand and negotiate a deal. There usual charges are about 2-3000 but they do not stick to it.
3. It depends on your riding skills, and if there is any snow in Manali itself at that time or not. On a general level, it is quite safe.

Rohtang Pass remains closed in Feb. That tourism guy will only take you till snow point, a few kilometers from Manali until where the road remains open. Do not fall for it.

You can still plan for Manali. You may not be able to go all the way till Rohtang top but you can still reach Snow point and other places in Manali.

Hello Vikram – That will not be a problem at all. You do not necessarily have to be married to stay at a hotel in Manali. No one will even ask you anything about it.

Hello Chandan Bhai – Taxi charges Manali mein bahut zyada hain. Agar aap budget mein jana chahte ho aur Rohtang top tak jana hai toh HRTC ka bus jaata hai subah subah Manali se Keylong ke liye. Usmein bethkar chale jaiye and Rohtang top par utar jaana. Par vahan se vaapis aane ke liye aapko ya toh kisi shared taxi ka wait karna padega ya lift leni padegi.

Agar HRTC bUs se jaate ho toh aap Rohtang Top par utar jaoge aur vaapis aane ke liye phir Allah Malik hai. Udhar se aati hui koi bus bhi mil sakti hai, koi shared taxi bhi mil sakti hai ya phir aapko lift leke vaapis aana padega, koi pakka nahi hai. Par abhi tourist season hai and Rohtang open hai toh us taraf se continous traffic chalta rehta hai Manali ki taraf toh kuchh na kuchh toh mil hi jaayega
HPTDC wala maine rent pichhle saal ke hisaab se mention kiya tha, shayad is saal change kar diya ho. Aapne kahan check kiya? Ye bus subah chalegi, ghanta bhar uper rukegi and dopahar maanke chaliye 2-3 baje ke kareeb vaapis le aayegi Manali.

Hello Ankur Bhai – Yes you may find some snow towards Rohtang Top but not much.Go by the HRTC Bus as hiring a taxi will cost you around 10-12K and you will also have to arrange a permit which is a hassle in itself. No need to book a hotel, there are plenty to chose from in Manali.

Gulaba view point becomes the last point towards Rohtang in Winters. In summer when Rohtang is open, it moves to somewhere near Marhi.

I called HPTDC office and they said it has not run this season due to non-availability of permits.
It was operational earlier, possible that it is on hold right now after the entire fuss by taxi union and Section 144 in Manali right now
The taxi fare as on today, Manali-rohtang-Manali is very high. Sumo 12000/13000, Alto 6500. The taxi opetators are demanding money like anything citing shortage of cars. Delhi – Rohtang- Delhi will be cheaper!!

I have just been To Manali and the Taxi (Innova) which we hired for the full day for Rohtang cost us 12000/-. Taxis like Alto etc will cost u around 6000-7000/-. Hope this will help u. If u want I can also share the Taxi driver’s number which we hired.

Hi Vishwas, On 8th May you can make a day trip to Rohtang. On 9th I will recommend that you stay in Manali itself and visit the local please in the town. Or you can also go to Solang valley.
