In this article, I will provide details on Srinagar to Leh Bus service; covering information like fare involved, timings, frequency, where to board it from and how can you book a seat. With the recent boost in tourism in Ladakh, several modes of travel that people avoided using earlier are now gaining popularity. What was once considered a destination for adventure enthusiasts now also gets considered for family vacations.
A journey to Ladakh earlier used to be thought of as expensive because of the time and the related cost involved but now there are several cost-effective methods available. One such mode of travel that people have started to opt for a lot is the bus service. So many people look for a bus to Ladakh that HRTC even started a direct bus from Delhi to Leh, details of which I have provided in the previous article here.

JKSRTC provides three different types of buses on this route. One is MCV, 14 and 19 seater, which is a fully luxury bus; next is a Deluxe Bus followed by a Semi Deluxe Bus. 1. How to visit famous places in the route from Srinagar to Leh if travelling byJK HRTC?
2. If I stop at Kargil, the next day I should take another JK HRTC to go to Leh, right?

Hi Sir,
We are reaching Leh on 2nd Sept 2019 for participating Ladakh Marathon . We have to travel back to Srinagar on 9th Sept 19 to catch flight .Is buses are running in this route?
Hello … I am planning for solo trip to Leh Ladakh and ur blog has really nice info … Thank you the bus from Srinagar to Leh will it stop at Sonamarg … Can I board it from sonamarg ?? As I ll complete my Amarnath darshan and reach sonamarg and want to go from there …. can u help me in this ?
It all depends on the Bus conductor whether or not he allows. The ticket for the Bus is supposed to be bought from Srinagar only. You can talk to the conductor and see if he allows.
Thank you … One more query … Is there any mode of transport from tsomoriri to Manali directly via key long ? Public transport or shared taxi ?
No there isn’t
Dear friend, are there any buses from Kargil to Leh.i would like to stay at Kargil for a day or two
You can board the same Srinagar to Leh bus at Kargil. If not, then shared taxis are easily available from there.

In this way I can visit Sonamarg near Kargil. I just want to know whether there are some Public Transport i.e. Buses from Kargil to Sonamarg ? and what about the accommodation. Are there some Guest Houses at Sonamarg or not..
thanks.

Gurdev Singh.
Hello Mr. Singh – Yes there are buses as well as shared taxis available on the entire route. And there are plenty of hotels available in Sonamarg.

Dear Vargis Sir,
Thank you very much for your detailed blog. It is really useful.
Need your valuable suggestion on my plan. I have my wife and 10years old daughter with me.
I will check out from Leh on 17th sept in the morning and planned to stay in Srinagar till 23rd Sept.
I would like to cover Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Pehalgam and local sightseeing at Srinagar
While travelling from Leh to Srinagar, I would like stop & stay in Sonamarg. It is good option? Can I get public (budget) transport from Sonamarg to Srinagar?
Regards,
Swapnil
Hi Swapnil,
The only budget option from Leh to Srinagar is the JKSRTC bus. See the post below.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/leh-to-srinagar-bus-service/
Yes you can cover Sonamarg on the way and visit rest of the palces after you reach Srinagar.
Thank you Vargis Sir for quick reply 🙂
If i catch 2PM bus from Leh then approx what time it will reach at Sonmarg? I hope it will reach at @5:30 am, is it safe to get down at sonamarg in early morning with family?
Regards,
Swapnil
Hello Swapnil,
You will reach Sonamrg early in the morning, possibly at around 4 AM because the Bus reaches Srinagar by 7 AM. You may even need to go all the way to Srinagar and come back to Sonamarg the next day.
Thank you Sir!
I guess better to go Srinagar and come back again 🙁
You are welcome !!!
Vargis Sir,
Thank you for your help and sorry to bother you again.
Can I plan Leh to Kargil by 2Pm JKSRTC bus (let me know if there is any early bus).
Stay in Kargil for one day.
Then
Option 1 – Kargil to Srinagar by JKSRTC If i can get a place or prior booking if possible.
Option 2 : Kargil to Sonmarg if any share taxi available. spend some time in Sonmarg and then catch 5PM JKSRTC bus to Srinagar.
waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Regards,
Swapnil
Yes you can do that as well but then I would recommend to stay a day in Sonamarg. Visit Thajiwas Glacier the next day and then go to Srinagar after that.
Hi Vargis,
The information provided is really useful, appreciate the efforts sir.
I am travelling to Srinagar on 28th May and from there i’ll be leaving for Leh by Bus, just wanted to know whether the roads will be opened by that tym ?

Hi Vargis,
I am planning to attend Tulip Festival this April and from there to Kargil, Batalik and Dah to see apricot blossom and Aryan people. So I need permit for this travel and where will I get them?
Dear Vargis,
Thanks a lot for this insightful article about Srinagar to Leh travel.
I am planning to travel from Srinagar to Leh on the 16th of May, 2019. After reading your post I have decided to take the luxury bus. But my question is that I really wanted to stay at Kargil for a day and travel the next day to Leh. Is it possible to get a luxury bus from Kargil to Leh on the second day?
Thanks in advance!
Dr. P. J. Sajin
Kerala
Hello Dr. Sajin,
Yes, you can board the Bus from Kargil as well. In case you don’t get a seat, you will easily find a shared cab going towards Leh from Kargil.
Thank you very much Vargis! I am closely following all your posts. They are really helpful.
I have one more query. Is it possible to get a rent a car (self driving) to go for sightseeing at Leh?
Yes, a cab would be better but it would come with the driver. Self-drive rentals are not an option in Ladakh.
But you should also know that a cab would cost you more than 3 bikes.
I have one more query. Is it possible to get a rent a car (self driving) to go for sightseeing at Leh? We are planning for a round trip from Leh to various places like Pangong Tso and return to Leh. All of us can drive. Hiring bikes means three bikes for us all. So a cab would be suitable I suppose. But please suggest a best mode of transportation.
Yes, a cab would be better but it would come with the driver. Self-drive rentals are not an option in Ladakh.
But you should also know that a cab would cost you more than 3 bikes.
You are welcome Dr. Sajin !!!
Thanks a lot for your advise.
You are welcome !!!
Thanks for very nicely written article. I have 2 question.
We plan to travel from Sonmarg to Leh after a trekk which ends at 3 pm at Sonmarg.
1.Please let me know if we can start Sonmarg to Kargin journey at 4 pm in evening from Sonmarg and stay at Kargil at night. Is any bus available at that time or any cab will be available , what is generally the cost of cab. Post this at what time Kargil Leh bus will be available from Kargil next day.
2.Or is it better to start travel from Sonmarg next day early morning and do whole day travel to Leh without stay at Kargil, it is possible. Thanks in advance.
It will be better to stay in Sonamarg that day and go to Kargil the next. It will be tough to find a commute so late in the day.
thanks for your guidance
You are welcome !!!

No online booking available.
Delhi cab – No it will not be as long as the person that the cab is registered to is with you in the car.
Hi Sir, i need your suggestion wrt bus bookings from srinagar to leh. I am reaching srinagar on 24th May and planning to leave for ladakh on 25th May.
What are the chances of getting bus tickets a day in advance. Would it be too risky to leave it for last minute. Do you suggest any pvt bus operators.
Much appreciate your insights.
Thanks ,
Himanshu
You can buy your ticket a day before from the bus stand easily.
Thank you so much.
And that is actually a mandate. You must buy your ticket a day before.

Hi Sir
Can you let me know the costs of sharing taxi and what kind of taxis ply as sharing taxi ? Is it safe to go by sharing taxi ? Do you need any permits for Kargil , Leh and other tourist places ?
Regards
Sajan
Yes it is safe to go. All kinds of taxis are available like alto, sumo, bolero etc. No permit is needed for traveling to Kargil and Leh but you need a permit for going beyond Leh
HI Mr. Khan,
I am travelling alone from Srinagar to Leh on 13 Aug and arriving Srinagar on 12th Aug at 5 PM. Shall I get the bus tickets on 12th Aug.Or Is there any good private bus operators or taxi operators in Srinagar?
Can bus stops at Kargil War Memorial if I want to visit? Or How I can visit the memorial, If I am travelling from Srinagar to Kargil and staying 1 night at Kargil by bus?
And I want to travel from Leh to Manali. Is there any good Govt buses or private bus operators from Leh? How much time it will take?
Hi Sir,
In the journey of Srinagar to Leh, it halts at Kargil. I have to ask, it is possible to see kargil war memorial in this halt.
Kargil war memorial is actually at Drass and not Kargil. It all depends on the bus driver really, he may or may not stop. You can request him though to stop for a while at the war memorial.
Hi vargis,
I’m planning to travel from leh to srinagar in the first week of September. Will I be able to get a bus? How many Days should I keep for this journey with 2 days in srinagar before I fly back to Mumbai.
Yes you will be able to get the Leh to Srinagar bus in September. Keep 2 days at least for this journey.
Hi Vargis, first of all I have to say you the biggest “thank you” in the world, I’m planning my first trip to ladakh and your website is a real mine of precious advice.
I’m planning to reach Leh from Srinagar to try to avoid sickness, I will move by train from Delhi to Jammu around the 8th of july.
From Jammu i’ve to choose between a bus to Srinagar or try to reach Banihal and form there and take a train to Srinagar.
1) how long does the bus take? Is the bus terminal nearby the train station?
2) how can I reach Banihal? Is there any direct bus from the Jammu train station?
Do you know how much does it cost more or less?
Thank you again.
Hi Lorenzo – You will easily find a bus or shared taxi from Jammu to Srinagar and that is what I will recommend. It is almost a complete day’s journey but the drive is quite scenic.
Thanks a Lot Khan Sahab for the details info and so many answers.
how much time it takes from Leh To Kargil? I am planning to visit Western Ladakh and need to take bus/mini bus till Kargil and then hire a taxi. any info will be helpful.
thanks
Hi Rups – Leh to Kargil is an entire day’s journey. You can board a bus from Leh for Kargil; or a shared cab.
hi varghese khan during the travelling time from srinagar to leh by bus. which popular places will be seen and stopped ?
The bus does not stop any pre-defined places. It may stop at top of the passes en route, a few dhabas and that is pretty much it.
Hello Vargis,
What are the timings of TRC Srinagar as I would be arriving at around 8pm in the evening at Srinagar from Pahalgam and from the very next day I want to catch the Bus to Leh? Would I get ticket still?
Hi Vishal,
If you have any idea about the closing timing of TRC, please let me know.
It is the usual business hours, 9 to 5.
Hello Sir
Thanks for the informative article.
Please confirm that JKSRTC bus tickets for Leh from srinagar can still be booked only by going to TRC in Srinagar OR online booking is also available. Apart from this, private buses can be booked from TRC as well ?
Also is there a bus service from Srinagar Airport to TRC(or somewhere near it) as i guess taxi would be costly.
Hello Mohit – Yes you will still need to buy a ticket for the bus from TRC. There is really no online booking system available. And yes, you can find an SRTC bus from Srinagar airport to TRC, charges Rs. 80 I think.
Dear Varghis sir, thanks for all the information and answers that u provide so elaborately and patiently. It’s indeed a treat to go through ur blogs.
Regards Baishan
Thanks Baishan Bhai for taking the time to drop a note. I really appreciate it.
Please tell me about the network connectivity as in 2018. i hear that airtel had launched 4g services in drass and leh..pease tell me about that.
No Airtel connectivity in Drass yet but in Leh you will get it. It won’t surely be 4G though.
Hello Vargis Khan…we(4ppl) will be reaching Srinagar by 1pm(July 31st) and our plan is to stay in srinagar on the same day and next day to drass and after that from dras to Leh.My doubt is regarding the bus service/share taxi to drass..Where we need to get down in dras ? as we need to visit War memorial also.Next day from drass will i get enough bus to leh from drass? If we are going in bus where all the bus stops in between..as we need to cover main attraction in this route..
You will have problem catching the bus from Dras. Kargil war memorial is not in main Drass town, it is a few kilometers before the town. Bus does not stop at all tourist places and neither do the shared cabs. They will just take brief halts at a few places and that is pretty much it.
Hello Vargis,
Thanks for the detailed infos…
I have two questions:
1. Please give some details regarding buses from Delhi to Srinagar.
2. If I reach Srinagar by 1-2 pm, will it be possible that I can buy a ticket for the bus on the next day for Leh?
3. Is Hotels/Hostel/homestays are easily available in Kargil? Does it need pre booking?
Hi Abhra,
1. I do not think there is a direct Delhi to Srinagar bus, may have to break it at Jammu.
2. Yes, you can buy the ticket for next day bus from Srinagar bus stand
3. Accommodation in Kargil is easily available, no need to book in advance.
HI Vargisji. I plan to reach Len by Bus and have 10 Days for Leh whereafter I shall leave by bus for Delhi. Can I hire a local Bike at Leh for 10 days . Can I travel on bike with my wife as pinion rider.
Alok Bhai yes you can definitely rent a bike there for 10 days. As long as you have some experience with bike riding in hills, then it is very safe. Just ride slow and carefully and you will be OK.
Thanks a lot
You are welcome
Hi Vargis
Thanks for the blog
Me and my friend finish our Leh trip provided by a group on 16th June Saturday(Pangong to Leh)
They havent communicted the exact time we will reach leh
We have accomodation till 17th morning and have our flights on 18th Monday in the afternoon
1.Is it safe to assume that we can make it for the 2pm bus to Srinagar on 16th, provided we ask the hotel guys to buy bus tickets for us the previous day
2.Should we wait till the next day?(Preferably not wanted since we want to visit Srinagar for atleast a day)
3.Till how late can you get a shared taxi from Leh to Srinagar?
4.Should we try a Leh – kargil bus and halt for the day and continue with Kargil – Srinagr the next day?How much will be the duration for these 2 legs and the frequency of buses?
Hi Robieo,
Your best choice would be to go to Leh bus stand and look for a shared taxi to Srinagar. They run non-stop for about 18 hours till they reach Srinagar. I will not recommend looking for a bus in your situation.
Hi vargis, A lot of info I got from this page.
I just had one concern.. I’ll be reaching Jammu airport by 4pm on 9th June and I need to catch the first bus for srinagar after that so that I reach before 6am on 10th June as I would need to catch the 8am bus for Leh the same day. The schedule is a little hectic.
So 2 questions..
Will I get a bus or a shared cab between 4pm to 7 pm from Jammu to Srinagar without prior Booking?
And also will I be able to catch the 8am bus from Srinagar to Leh without booking or would there be any other buses or Share cabs available the same day?
Hi Shaun,
1. Shared cab that late in the day is highly doubtful but you can try your luck. Most of the buses and cabs from Jammu start by mid day at latest.
2. You will need to buy the Srinagar to Leh ticket the day before. They do not sell tickets on the spot in the morning and I doubt they will let you board the bus
Hi, if we travle by these buses do we get accomodation at kargil easily or wee need to do prior booking.
You will get accommodation easily.
Is there any other way to save two day travelling time from a JKSRTC bus from srinagar to leh. Is there any other direct (srinagar to leh) bus services available? If so please do reply.
The only way to save these 2 days is to either reach directly to Leh by flight or take a non-stop local cab from Srinagar to Leh which will cover the journey in about 18-20 hours.
Hello vargis
Its a very informative blog. Plz help me with this, I have to catch my flight in Jammu from leh. Can you please tell me what’s the distance and duration to reach Jammu airport? I would also like to know if any cab service available there and its fare..?
Hi Deepika, Let me first get this correct. You have a flight from Jammy for which you will travel from Leh to Jammu by road, is that correct?
If yes, then plan it at least 3 days of travel. That is the minimum time it will take you to reach Jammu well in time to board the plane.
Thank you v much.
Yup by road, but I don’t have 3 days time. Is there any possibility that I can make it in 20 hrs?
All the way to Jammu, no you cannot. Non-stop journey from Leh to Srinagar will eat up to 16-18 hours at least.
Hi Vargis Sir,
Can we book bus from Srinagar to Leh over phone? Me and my friends are travelling from Delhi.
Hello Neha – There is no booking system available. You will have to buy the ticket in person, one day before the journey. So if you want to catch the bus on Tuesday morning, you will have to personally go to the counter on Monday and buy a ticket. It cannot be booked in advance over the phone or online.
Hi vargis,
First of all thank u for providing all those details.
We are a group of 5 persons and are planning to visit leh from Srinagar on 9th of June,2018. We are thinking of hiring a cab(Innova, xylo) from Srinagar to leh.what options do we have? How much is it gonna cost if u have any idea about it? Do they provide cabs like for one sided travelling? Any taxi services contact info that u can recommend ?also how is the route typical turns Wala or simpler than Manali and shimla wala(in short what are the chances of motion sickness/vomiting)?
Regards,
Sho
Hi Shobhit,
I am sorrry I do not have any contacts for self-drive rentals. As a matter of fact, I do not beleive they even have that option in Srinagar. You will have to rent a private cab with driver.
The route is Way more tough than the usual Shimla or Manali roads.
Vargis,
I am planning on flying into Srinagar in the afternoon around 5pm. Would I still be able to arrive at the TRC in the evening and book a bus for the next day to Leh? What are the hours of the TRC? This would be on a Sunday. Also, I see you say that shared cabs aren’t much more than a bus. Is this an option if I am by myself, wanting to stop in Kargil overnight, and want opportunities for picture taking at the main sites?
Thanks
Caleb – I just replied to your other comment. For 5 days, fly straight to Leh and focus on Ladakh. If you reach Srinagar first, it will just be increased hassle for you. Reach Leh by air, relax and visit more places there.
Hello Sir,
Its great to see such detailed information, I feel to start share something similar on my trips once a year 🙁 , Are you a traveler or an local resident ?
Is roads/public transport gets open by 15th April ?
I would be reaching srinagar on 11th April for a 12 days trip. I am a Nature lover, can you suggest places to visit(not to miss) in and around Srinagar(J&K).
Below are places in my current checklist :
Srinagar(2 days)
Gulmarg(1)
Pahelgam(1)
Sonmarg(1)
Doodhpathri(1)
Varinag(1)
ducksum(1).
I have 4 days in hand, and I am with family(4) with youngest kid of 10yrs.
looking fwd. to your experiences and valuable inputs.
thanks
Kamal
Hello Kamal,
I am just a traveler like you. If you are asking about the Srinagar to Leh road, then it opens sometime by mid April. For a list of places to visit around Srinagar, Please take a look at the post below.

Assalamuallaikum tell me manali to leh by road opens in which months
Walaikum As-salam – Manali to Leh opens either by late May or early June
Sir jee october 15 .2018 me srinagar to leh by local transport travel possible hai? Hum 2frnds leh tour prog set kar raha hu.is this possible?
Bhai is waqt aapko shared cabs mil jaayegi Srinagar se Leh ke liye
Bus service nahi milegi Sir?only share cab. Road open rahega to?aur share cab non stop jayega leh?ya kargil ngt stay karega?
Bus mil bhi sakti hai aur nahi bhi, depend karta hai sab weather par and snowfall shuru hua hai ya nahi Zoji La top par. Choice aapko hai. Apko non-stop shared cab bhi mil jaayegi aur agar aap chaho toh pehle Kargil tak cab aur vahan night stay karke next day Leh ke liye cab pakad lo. Bus ka 50/50 maan kar chalo. Agar mil gayi toh vo 2 din ki journey hogi with Kargil night stay.
Hello Vargis Bhai,
I am really impressed and grateful to you for the precious information shared by you on travel in J&K specially Ladakh. We are two families of total 07 persons planning to visit Srinagar en route to Leh in mid May’18. Pl confirm whether the roads will open for public or not. Secondly, whether it is better to book a Xylo/Tavera type vehicle from Srinagar to Leh. Or, book seats in a MCV of 14 seater. What is the cost for a drop by a Xylo/Tavera from Srinagar to Leh?. Main purpose of preferring a Xylo over a MCV is to do sight seeing at Sonemarg and other places on the way. Our itinerary for the trip is like this;
Day-1: Reach Srinagar 15.05.18.
Day-2: Local sight seeing at Srinagar and booking a taxi/ MCV for Leh the next day.
Day-3: Leave Srinagar early morning and reach Kargil. On the way sight seeing and night stay at Kargil.
Day-4: Leave Kargil early and reach Leh in the evening and night stay.
Day-5: Local sight seeing at Leh.
Day-6: Leave Leh early in the morning for Nubra valley via Kahrdungla pass and night stay at Nubra valley.
Day-7: Leave early from Nubra valley for Pangon lake and night stay at Pangon lake.
Day-8: Leave early from Pangon lake for Leh and reach Leh in the evening and night stay at Leh.
Day-9: Leave Leh in the morning for Delhi by flight.
Pl let me know the above itinerary is workable? What are the type of accommodations available at Nubra valley and Pangon lake. Pl provide tariff of budget/ decent hotels at Nubra valley and Pangon lake.
Pl help me with my above visit plan.
Regs,
P.K.Biswas.
Kol.
Hello Biswas Bhai,
Thank you for your kind words.
1. If you want plenty of sightseeing then I recommend booking a private taxi for the trip rather than relying on public transport.
2. Srinagar Leh road will be open in May.
3.You may want to change the plan a bit. The direct route from Nubra to Pangong may not open in May so you will have to come back to Leh from Nubra and go to Pangong the next day.
4. For budget hotels around the route, take a look at these posts please.

Dear Varghis Bhai
First of all, thank you for your kind time in answering our questions patiently.I live in Hyderabad, India, and I want to visit ladakh in september 2018 for a marathon. I also want to get my wife and a 1.5 year old son along with me that time. I can take a flight to Srinagar and will visit places there first before moving to Ladakh by a vehicle.
1. Is it OK to get my 1.5 year old kid with us? Now he is now 11 month old.
2. How will it be to take the luxury government transport from srinagar to ladakh (with kid)? I have read your post on govt transport and it was really good thank you.
3. What general preparations do i need to do for my kid before i get him there? preparing for altitude sickness etc..?
4. What is the can I book local travels cab in srinagar upon arriving? or do i need to go with a reputed online tour package? If you have some contacts please provide.
5. Also, at ladakh site seeing, can i book the same upon arriving there? please share your thoughts on hotels booking also.
Thanks alot for your time.
Gowtham
Hyderabad
Hello Gowtham Bhai,
Thank you for your kind words.
In terms of traveling to Ladakh with your child, please take a look at the article below. Should help answer most of your questions.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/traveling-to-ladakh-with-children/
For the bus from Srinagar to Leh, you will have to buy the ticket a day in advance from Srinagar Bus stand or Tourist Reception Center near Dal Lake
For sightseeing, how do you intend to travel? Private taxi I suppose since that is the most comfortable way?
Dear Vargis,
Thanks for maintaining this wonderful website. I needed your help as I do not live in India.
I applied for a Vipassana course in Leh,Ladakh thats starts the 28 Feb and last 10 days.
Since I would be in Ladakh, I was thinking to explore the region with 10-12 days in mid March 2018.
I was wondering if it is possible to visit the major location points in Ladakh region during the month of March 2018? Would the roads be open to drive to all the popular attractions?
Is it possible to take a bus from Srinagar to Leh during March 2018? I have read on your blog that the trip between Srinagar to Leh is incredibly beautiful.
It also stops at Kargil. As a foreigner, would i need special permissions for the stopover or spending the night over at Kargil?
If it is possible to visit the major tourist attractions in March 2018, then I would appreciate if you could recommend any good travel agency.
Best regards
Sweman
Hello Sweman – Thank you for your encouraging words.
1. Can you visit all major tourist locations – YES
2. Can you catch a bus from Srinagar to Leh? NO. The highway remains closed at this time and you cannot travel either by your own or public transport.
3. The only way out is to reach Leh by flight and rent a private taxi there for sightseeing.
which road is open till 15th november 2017
Srinagar to Leh road but public transport at that time may be be scarce.
Hi Vargis bhai, Have gone through many of your replies. It is indeed fantastic that you are helping so many. You are superb in terms of knowledge, courtesy and promptness. I have saved your link and shall get back to you shortly for help. I am planning Leh trip in coming June. Hope that is a good time to visit. Thanks a ton in advance.
Hello Pankaj Bhai – I am glad that the information posted was of help and really appreciate your encouraging words. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question. I will be glad to help in any way that I can with your trip.
I am planning for Leh from Jammu .I will reach Jammu by 6:00 pm on 13 oct
Guide me about Jammu to Srinagar -Leh
With halt in Kargil ( where to stay at night )
You can take a shared cab or bus for Jammu to Srinagar, then board a shared cab for Kargil and then for Leh finally. Shared cabs are easily available at bus stands so you will have no trouble finding one.
thank you Vargis .Me and my friend (F) traveling to jammu. Is it safe to travel by shared cabs from srinagar to leh..? will I be able to get the bus from srinagar to leh on same day morning , because I would be landing to srinagar early 8 am..what about stay in kargil.?
You are welcome Vaishu. No you will not get the bus the same day. It starts early in the morning and ticket must be bought a day before. So if you want to catch the bus, you will have to stay for the day in Srinagar, buy the ticket in the evening and catch the bus the next morning. Shared cabs are quite safe too
Hi. I am Solo Traveler and planning a short 10-12 days trip to Leh and Shrianagr. I’ll reach Jammu on 5th October. No plans ahead. I’ll travel through road. Please suggest me any cheapest way by road? as i m solo traveler so anyone can join me ….
Hello – Cheapest way to travel would be by Bus only. You should still be able to find a bus in Ladakh in October but in case you are not then you will have to look for a shared taxi. It will cost you just slightly more than what you will pay for a bus.
Hi Vargis,
I am staying at Dal lake currently and need to know Where exactly at Dal Lake is the TRC booking center and when does it open in the morning to book tickets?
Thanks.
Hi Moitri – Just ask around for Tourist Reception Center and any of the local taxi guys or the hotel people will be able to guide you
Is there any Jksrtc buses available from leh to nubra valley and leh to pangong tso ???
Yes there is. Take a look at this article.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/ladakh-bus-service-2017-frequency-fare-schedule/
Sir, May i know the Jksrtc bus timings of Jammu to Srinagar ?
Hello Tony – I do not know the exact timings but there are a couple of buses that leave for Srinagar in first half of the day, before 10-11 AM. You can find both JKSRTC and private agency buses plying en route. As a matter of fact, there could be private buses leaving for Srinagar in second half of the day as well but I do not have more information on the matter. I am sorry.
Thank you sir for the information
You are welcome !!!

Hello Tony, I doubt there will be a bus that late in the day for Srinagar. You can look for a shared taxi though or else you you will have to catch the bus next morning.

we are landing at 12 afternoon at Srinagar… can you help us with option to go to leh…
Aug 10th … 3 people.
If you mean traveling on same day then your best choice is to reach TRC Srinagar and see if you can find a shared cab. If not, then you can take the Srinagar to Leh bus the next morning
assalamwalaikum vargis bhai .

Vargis bhai, I want to travel from Jammu/katra to leh by bus or shared taxi. I am travelling solo so can you suggest what would be the charges and how much time or hour will it takes.I planning to travel on 18th July 2017. Thanks
Vishal Bhai Jammu to Leh is one day journey and fare would be between Rs.. 200 to Rs. 500 depending on which bus or taxi you chose. Srinagar to Leh is 2 days journey, fare will be between Rs. 800 – Rs. 1500 depending on which bus you travel in (around Rs. 2000 for shared taxi)
Jammu to LEH is one day journey?????
Sorry Bhai. I meant Jammu to Srinagar one day and then Srinagar to Leh 2 days.
Walaikum-As-Salam Haider Bhai,
1. Bhai It would be better to take the bus, but in case you want to reach the very next day then shared cab is good. It will however not be an enjoyable journey. You willl be travelling non-stop and may suffer from acute mountain sicnkess as well.
2. If you only have until 6th August and want to cover Ladakh then I will not recommend staying in Srinagar.
3. Best would be to catch a direct flight from Leh to Mumbai so it gives you enough time to travel more areas in Ladakh.
Vargis Bhai, we are planning to move from Leh to Srinagar on 25th July. Is there mini buses are available to cover this journey in two days that is night halt at Kargil. So that we can enjoy the journey.
Hi sir we will reach srinagar airport on 20july 7AM…if we have to directly go to leh …please tell me available buses and taxi services with duration of time and fare
Hello Vargis, we have flight towards delhi on saturday afternoon 2 pm from Srinagar. so when do you think we have to leave from Leh , So as to catch the flight.
Hello Praveen – You can take a shared cab from Leh the day before. It starts by afternoon and reaches Srinagar the next day morning, running non-stop for 18-20 hours. Or you can take the usual Leh to Srinagar bus that makes the journey in 2 days, stopping overnight at Kargil.
Hi.. I am travelling to Leh via srinagar with a halt at night in Kargil. Please tell me what time will I get bus from Srinagar as my flight is reaching Srinagar at 10:00 am in the morning.
Hello – The bus to Leh from Srinagar starts early in the morning so you will not be able to catch that. You can try a shared taxi from TRC Srinagar, those are available until 12 – 1 PM.
Hi vargis, I am travelling to Leh on 19th of july directly from my place..but i hav got the tickets from srinagar to bangalore to bangalore on 25 th july..
i just wanted to ask u, do i get buses from Leh to Srinagar for booking ?? i should book the tickets from Leh Bus stand on the previous day day is it ?? since i hav a flight from srinagar on 25th, will it be able to reach safely on time from leh to srinagar, can u elaborate on bus service or shared taxi service or personal cab.. wat do u suggest ?
Hi Yash – Yes there is no booking system available for Srinagar to Leh Bus. You will have to buy a ticket a day in advance. What time is your flight from Srinagar? The Leh bus usually reached towards late afternoon. You can inquire about a shared cab while you are in Leh. These usually start around 3-4 PM from Leh and run non-stop to reach Srinagar the next day morning.
Hello Vargis Bhai
1) Hum July 19 ko jammu Pohochane wale hai kya hame Jammu se Shrinagar jane k liye morning main ya night ko JKRTC or Private Bus available hai kya ? agar hai to Timing kya hoga ya fir aur koi options
2) Aur Srinagar Se leh k liye buses kb available hoti hai ? kaha se ? unka time kya hota ? hai aur booking process kya hota hai ?
Thank You,
Raju
Hello Raju Bhai – Jammu se Srinagar ke liye kayi buses chalti hain. Vahan Bus stand se aapko day and night dono tiime ke liye hi bus mil jaayegi. Srinagar se Leh ke liye bus ka koi booking process nahi hai. Aapko Srinagar Bus stand pahunchna padega and agle din ke liye ticket leni padegi. Bus subah subah chalti hai 7-8 ke beech.
Quick response k liye shukriya Vargis bhai…Thanks Alot 🙂
You are welcome Bhai
Helo sir hamara July 18 ko program he leh ka 18 ko ham shinager air pot pochenge morning 9 o’clock hame shering vehicle milegi kya leh ke liye
Bus subah subah 6 – 7 baje ke aas paa milegi toh usse pehle pahunch jana bhai vahan. Agar shared taxi ke baare mein puchh rahe ho toh TRC Srinagar se dopahar 12 tak shared taxis chalti hain Leh ke liye
hey,
is it good to book taxi (from srinagar to leh) in advance or can be bargained after reaching srinagar ?
i called few taxi drivers, i found their num on net, they are asking for 18k.
If you are looking for a private taxi Ayushman, you may as well book it. They have set rates and even if you bargain, they won’t go down by a marginal difference.
hello vargis,
how is the condition of JKSRTC buses ?
may we get luxury buses (volvo sort of) from srinagar ?
Hello Ayushman – These are just ordinary buses, not too comfortable but not in a terrible state either. There is no volvo available on Srinagar to Leh route.
thanks vargis
Hi vargis, I went thru this site and comments, very useful. First time I am visiting to leh in this September.
Once again thanks for the good information.
Thanks
Mohan
Thank you for your appreciating words Mohan Bhai. I am glad that the information was of help.
Hi Vargis Can I reach Leh from Srinagar in Single Day. I will be landing in Srinagar around 10AM on 7th July. I wants to be in Leh on 8th of July.
Hi Amol, The only way to do the journey in a single day is to catch a shared cab from TRC Srinagar. If you are landing at 10, then you can still make it in time. They have shared cabs running until around 12 noon to 1 PM.
Hi Vargis ,
I am Martin.
Is it safe to travel by third week of June 2017 from Srinagar to Leh. Please give some information in this regard as I am planning for a trip alone using public transport as my mode of transportation.
Thanks in advance.
Martin
Hi Martin – The valley is under a complete shut down right now, curfew imposed and internet services unavailable. No one can really guarantee anything when it comes to Srinagar. Best thing would be to keep an eye on the news before you start your travel.
Thanks Vargis for your prompt response.
Possible keep updates through the same forum…
Martin
They are hoping that the curfew will be lifted tomorrow but not sure right now, I will update once I know more.
hey vargis, can you please throw some light on accommodation at kargil. Is there any hotel for night stay and what are the charges?
Thank you.
Hey Karan – You will have to look for the hotel yourself. JKSRTC doesn’t have any ties ups with any hotels (at least not till last year) and your accommodation too is not included in the ticket. So it is pretty much that the bus will drop you at a certain point, you will look for a hotel, stay there and be back in the morning to catch the bus from the same spot.
There are numerous hotels in Kargil and you will have no trouble at all finding one. Hotel Cavaran and Hotel D’Zojila are good but their prices are a bit steep, about Rs. 2500. Apart from these, there are several guest houses where you can easily get a room for under Rs. 1000
Thank you very much for detailed information.
From when Srinagar to Leh buses start operating? We want to travel on 31st may.
Can you provide me any contact details of TRC srinagar or any private bus operators?
You are welcome Vishal. You can try contacting TRC at these numbers
94190 77544
0194 2501776
Bro I need MCV bus timings from Leh to Srinagar. Additional to that please tell me same like Srinagar-leh, will bus stop at sight seeing places from Leh-Srinagar trip..
Hi Bala – It starts from Leh in the morning at 8 AM, halts at Kargil for the night and reaches Leh the next day. Both these buses stop at a few spots for sightseeing but not all of them
Hey Vargis,
thanks a lot for very useful tips. I’ve still got some question I’d be grateful you could answer.
I am going to India in 2 weeks and would like to get to Ladakh. I will arrive to Delhi on the 25th of May but I am not sure whether I should take the Srinagar-Leh route (which should open on the 15th of May) or the Manali-Leh route (opening probably on the 25th of May).
I don’t have a car, so I’ll be travelling by buses and hitchhiking. If I were to go from Srinagar to Leh, I would take a bus (if it will operate at the end of May), if from Manali to Leh, I would hitchhike, since there won’t be any bus. You think there could be enough trucks on the Manali-Leh highway right after its opening?
Which route would you please recommend?
Have a nice day,
Martin
Hey Martin – Why not take Srinagar Leh route to reach Ladakh and return via Manali? Yes there will be plenty of trucks and shared taxis playing on Srinagar Leh highway around 25th.
Thanks for the reply, Vargis. I wanted to go to Srinagar when coming from Leh, since I expect that my stay in Leh will be quite demanding (trips to the surrounding villages, a few hikes).
I wanted my stay in Srinagar to be more relaxed, chilling on the lake and so on.
Nevertheless taking the Srinagar-Leh highway seems like an easier and more reliable way how to see Ladakh. I’m affraid the Manali-Leh highway won’t open in time or landslides will occur after it’s opening. I wouldn’t like to get stuck in Manali for too long.
Thanks for the advice.
Take care,
Martin
This is your only option right now Martin. Expected date of opening for Manali Leh road is right now May 25th but that is just an estimate. In all probability, this date will get pushed to June 1st week. Srinagar Leh highway on the other hand will open in next 2 to 3 days.
Thanks, I’ll take the Srinagar-Leh road and go to Manali on the way back to Delhi.
Have a nice day,
Martin
You are welcome brother !!!
Your info is always useful!! Keep it going!!
Thanks Faisal Bhai

Hey if you could help me out with the cost and timings of share cab from Srinagar to Leh , we are 3 of us planning to go in August also if you could help me with number of people providing share cab
There is no number. Just reach TRC Srinagar and you can easily find shared cabs going towards Leh. Charges will be between Rs. 2000 to Rs.2500 per person.
