Manali Leh Highway Status 2018 for now is CLOSED. However an early opening of the highway is expected this year. Entire Himalayan region has seen very little snow this winter as expected to previous years. Usually the pass opens by early June however it is expected to open in in May itself.
Like last year, this will be a dedicated thread for Manali Leh highway status 2018. I will continue updating the status on opening and closing of the road; along with the road conditions as the year progresses. Apart from the blog post here, I will also start a sticky thread at our Community Forum where other members of the forum can also shared their updates. If you have a more recent update than the one provided here, please do share it either in the comments section below or at the forum post; link of which I have provided below.

How to Plan a Trip to Ladakh – A Complete Travel Guide
Update: June 30th
Heavy rains for last 2 days have created a flood like situation in Srinagar city. Jhelum river has crossed its danger mark and if the water rose another 2 to 3 feet, it will flood the entire Laal Chowk. Authorities have issued a flood alert in Srinagar, sSchools have been shut down and Amarnath Yatra has been suspended for now. Srinagar Leh highway remained closed all day yesterday and was only reopened in the evening for a little while. There was a landslide at Jammu – Srinagar highway yesterday leaving thousands of people stranded on the road. It would be unsafe to travel towards Srinagar as of now; until situation is back under control and weather clears.
Update: June 24th
Below is an update of road conditions on Manali to Leh highway, Srinagar to Leh highway and in Ladakh.
Bad sections: Udhampur to Nehru tunnel 50 km, zozila pass 20 km, khardung la pass 35 km, some where near to pang to keylong 35 km and 20 km near Rohtang.
Total 250 kms of bad roads on entire circuit
Chandigarh to Udhampur – road is good
Nehru tunnel to Sonmarg – road is smooth
Zero point to Leh – road is smooth
Leh to nubra – 40 kms bad road
Nubra to pangong – road is good
Pangong to pang – 100 km of bad rad
Pang to keylong – 50 kms of bad road and 4 water crossings
Keylong to Rohtang – last 20 km bad and tough water crossings
Rohtang to Manali – heavy rush
Manali to Chandigarh- road OK
Update: June 18th
Update on Road condition this year. Thank you Khawinder Bhai for providing these details.
- There was a landslide near Zingzing Bar a few weeks ago but the road has been restored now.
- Manali to Rohtang is a mix of good and bad.
- Rohtang to Keylong is OK.
- Keylong to Sarchu is extremely bad, almost ugly
- Sarchu to Pang is good.
- Pang to Leh is excellent.
Update: May 24th
Manali Leh Highway is now official all open. HRTC has also declared that they will starts their Delhi to Leh and Manali to Leh bus service this week itself. Those planning to drive by themselves, please practice caution as the road at top of the passes will still be narrow and slippery. Restoration work is still going on and it may result in temporary road closures as well.
Update: May 20th
Rohtang Pass has been opened for tourist traffic as well. Permits for both visiting Rohtang Pass and crossing it over are now being issued. Thanks Abhra Bhai for providing the update.
Update: May 14th
Manali Leh highway was officially freed of snow yesterday and reinstated for traffic movement. For initial days however, only Army vehicles will be allowed, followed by local traffic. Tourist traffic will only be allowed after the road has been deemed as stable by the authorities and weather does not throw any more surprises. It has snowed at Rohtang top still in last couple of days. However, if the weather hold now, the road should be reopened for tourists in next 7 to 10 days.
Update May 10th
The game of Rohtang getting open, closed, open, closed and open again continues. Authorities declared the pass open yesterday and will allow the movement of civilian traffic from today onward. Ever sine it was opened in early April, the mighty pass has been closed and reopened again three times due to late snowfall and unpredictable weather . However, for now only local traffic will be allowed and there is still no word on by when the tourists will be allowed to visit or cross Rohtang top. The road condition at the pass is dangerous right now and even local traffic had to be stopped yesterday due to some cars skidding off the road.
Update: May 9th
Surprise Surprise !! It is the month of May and the spell of late snowfall still continues. Valleys of Lahaul and Spiti and Passes of Rohtang, Kunzum, Sach and Baralacha all received fresh snowfall yesterday. This is definitely bound to delay the opening of all routes including Rohtang Pass, Sach Pass, Manali Leh and Manali Kaza routes. For now, the estimate is that both Manali Leh and Manali Kaza routes will not open until Late May and Rohtang Pass will probably open around 20th; provided that there is no more heavy snowfall. Below is a pic of Kaza after fresh snowfall in Spiti yesterday. There is forecast that more snow is on the way.
Update: May 6th
Baralacha La and Rohtang Pass have been both cleared of snow. Work now continues to clear the snow between Baralacha La and Sarchu. If the weather holds the way and the work continues the way it is now, Manali – Leh Highway may reopen in a week to 10 days.
Update: May 3rd
Snow was almost cleared by Baralacha La last week and BRO was hopeful that they will be able to open the road by Mid May. However the constant spell of snow continue to delay the work. It snowed at Rohtang and Baralacha La top even yesterday. For now, the expected date of opening will be towards May end.
Update: April 21st
Winter this year arrived very late at Rohtang and other nearby passes. BRO was able to clear the snow off Rohtang completely and were hopeful that they will be able to reopen Manali Leh highway by April 20th but due to recent spells of snow, they had to shut down Rohtang Pass again. It has been snowing at top of the passing at regular intervals due to which opening of Rohtang, Kunzum Pass, Sach Pass, Manali Leh and Manali Kaza stretch will definitely get delayed. There is no confirmed date yet about opening of all these places.
Even Srinagar Leh highway which was opened several weeks ago was closed again yesterday due to snowfall at Zojila top.
Update: April 16th
Estimated date of Manali Leh highway getting restored for vehicles has now changed to May 5th. BRO was hopeful to declare it open by April 20th but recent snowfall in the region has pushed the date to May 5th now. Work is now under progress to restore the connectivity between May 5th to 8th at latest.
Update: April 6th
Rohtang Pass has been declared open for year 2018. BRO was able to clear snow all the way and restore traffic on the route on Thursday. For now, only light motor vehicles will be allowed to ply between Manali and Keylong from Friday, April 6th. An official announcement of the opening however will only be made on 9th April.
Please note though that for initial days, only the local vehicles are allowed to cross over. Tourists do not get the permit to cross over for initial few days. You must give it at least 7 to 10 days before planning a trip. To be on a safer side, do not plan to cross the pass before 15th April.
BRO is hopeful that if the weather remained the way it is right now; they will be able to restore connectivity on entire Manali Leh highway by 20th April. The road from Manali to Kaza will also be restored by April end; or May first week at latest.
For now, one-way traffic will be allowed towards the pass on a daily basis. This is because the road is not really in best of the condition and is quite narrow at some places. On Friday, traffic will be allowed to ply from Manali side and then on Saturday, vehicles from Lahaul side will be allowed to cross over. BRO will continue to work on the road and stabilize it. Once they have widened it enough for vehicles to cross each other, two way traffic will be allowed.
Update: April 3rd
Rohtang Pass should be all clear of snow this week and in all probability will be declared open for tourists next week. Less than a kilometer of snow is left to clear towards the top which BRO is currently working on removing. Estimated opening time for Manali Leh highway right now remains to be around Mid-May.
Manali Leh Highway Status 2018 – Update: December 19th
Fresh spells continue all across the Himalayan region. The entire stretch between Manali to Leh, including Rohtang Pass and Manali Kaza stretch continue to remain off limits. For now, if you were planning a winter trip to Manali, there is no way that you can reach the top.
Manali Leh Highway Status 2018 – Update: November 26th
Manali to Leh highway is not open for vehicular traffic anymore. With recent snowfall in entire region; and with the temperatures dropping, frost and black ice has started to form on the roads. For now, if you are planning to visit Ladakh in near future; catch a flight or plan for next year if a road trip is on your mind.
Manali Leh Highway Status 2018
Much to everyone’s surprise, the road from Manali to Leh still remains open. The normal closing time of the highway is sometime in October; towards the end of the month. This year however, with half of the November gone; the highway has not see much of snow and still remains functional. You must however know that traversing on this road as of now is extremely risky.
An advisory has also been issues to travelers to avoid using the road. There is a high chance of snowfall, frost and black ice which makes the journey dangerous as of now. There are 5 high altitude passes between Manali and Leh and almost all of them have started to experience light spells of snow. The closing of the road is only a matter of days now and can happen anytime. All the tented accommodation facilities en route have wrapped up for the season; so once you cross Keylong, chances of finding another place to stay until Leh are almost next to none.
I hope the information above on was of help. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below or at our Community Forum and I will be glad to answer.

Hello Vargis,
I am planning to Leh through Manali next sunday that is 30th September and the road has been closed from 22nd due to rain can you please give me some more details.
Sorry I missed responding to your comment Natesh. Guess you are already on your way by now.
Hi Vargis.
I was planning a trip from Delhi to Ladakh via Manali in the second week of October.
Will there be any issue with regards to closed routes from Keylong or Sarchu?
The plan was initially for September but the floods and the landslides deterred us from going ahead. Will the route be clear now or something that we need to be careful about?
Also, keeping the budget, safety and comfort in view, would you suggest Innova, Scorpio, Thar or Swift??
Thanks.
Hi Syed – Road should be clear by second week of October. I am speaking historically though, rest depends on the weather.
Scorpio will be best in terms of overall performance and comfort.
You can do that on a 30 year old Yamaha Rx 100. Does not matter .What matters is the state of the vehicle in performance….And how well maintained it is.
10 Oct the highway should open
Hii, iam planning to visit Leh Ladakh throu Manali route by Audi A4 sedan in Sept. 2018. Can u tell me the present status of road for the sedan, as usually by September end road are in good condition
You are right. Swift 11 years old will not be allowed to cross Rohtang from Manali side. If I was you, I will not even think about bringing A4 to Ladakh. Its GC is remarkably low for Indian roads anywhere and in Ladakh, your car is bound to get damaged. Crossing water streams will become a nightmare. You can bring you swift in a way that you go to Ladakh via Srinagar and return via Manali.
Can anyone update with the latest status (September). we are planning to travel from Manali on 12th October and return on 20th October.
It is all open but also raining right now around Manali, Rohtang and Lahaul valley. Nothing major that would be of concern right now
Any updates on the current status of the Delhi-Manali-Spiti roads given the heavy rains in Delhi?
I am starting my trip on Friday!
Roads are all open if that is what you wanted to ask.
Dear Vargis, is it shorter to go to lake pangong from Manali without going to Leh first? It seems shorter if we do it.thanks
Hi Nasir – You cannot go to Pangong without getting the permits from Leh first.
Hello vargis sir. I am planning to go on a road trip from manali to leh laddakh on my Renault pulse in september. Will it be a good time to go.
Hello Sarita Ji, You can bring your Pulse to Ladakh but the low ground clearance will definitely cause problem at several places. You will have to go very carefully to ensure there is no damage to your car.
Hi Vargis,
I am planning to visit Manali, Keylong and Sarchu in the first week of November this year .
So, would I be able to make it ?
Regards,
Soumyadip
Hi Soumyadip – Not in November. Manali Leh route would have long closed by then and even if it did not, it will be way too risky traveling on it in November. Don’t take the chance.
Hello Vargis khan
We completed our bike trip to Ladakh today on 26th june successfully.
We took our route from Srinagar to Manali.
I am really grateful to u as your maps and other tips were of great help to us.

Thank u very much.
Thanks Harsh Bhai. I am glad that the information posted was of help. Do share some pics of your trip if possible.

Hi
Vargis Bhai… Julley

I am driving in hyundai I10 and coming from srinagar side. All Roads are very well in conditions and smooth to drive.
At present we now here leh in for 2 days . After than we back from leh to Manali Road.
Please let me know whats Road condition of leh to Manali Road , If you have any latest information.
Also please tell us where to stay on that route. Actually as on 14th we plan to go Pangong lake and stay there.on 15th we come back from pangong and turn to manali route from karu.
Please let me know where we stay and share if you have any contact no.
Regards
Khawinder Sharma
Khawinder Bhai Manali Leh highway is mostly OK with a few bad patches in between near Tanglang La and Rohtang La. Rest is mostly OK. You will come across a few water crossings definitely so be careful with an i10 there.
From Pangong, break the journey at Pang and then drive straight to Manali from there. If you have time then do Pang to Jispa and Jispa to Manali.
Khawinder Bhai missed mentioning, there was a landslide near Zingzing Bar due to flash flood but the road has been restored now.
Thanks Vargis Bhai
We have crossed jing jing bar and see were land slides. Everything now fine.
One thing i say for your information that on leh to manali Road condition upto Pang is fantastic and Pang to sarchu is Little bit Good.
BUT after sarchu Road Condition is too Bad. Please convey to all that if rain starts. No body cross sarchu.as road condition is very ugly.
After reaches kaylong their is also very rough road condition. also convey to all not to go when Rain starts.
Once again Vargis ji thanks a lot for giving us very valuable information. This help us a lot during our travelling.
Yesterday we stay near Pandoh and may be reached today in our home safely.
One thing I mention you again that we had never complete our srinagar to leh and back from manali trip 100 % safe in with our hyundai I10, if we not get your guidence and support at time to time.
Thanks and Regards
Khawinder Sharma
PUNJAB
Thanks Khawinder Bhai for this information. Added it to the article.
And thank you for your kind words brother. I am glad that I could be of help.
Vargis, this is Randy again. I failed to mention an important fact. I want to to the Spiti Valley loop. So again best to to this going up from Shimla to Spiti to Kelong and then Leh in June. OR do it in reverse in late August from Leh to Keylong to Shimla? Thanks
Hi Randy – Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate it.
To be honest, it is more or less the same deal if you start from Shimla or Srinagar. I would however recommend that you start from Srinagar, travel to Leh and then end the journey at Shimla after driving down the Spiti circuit. I must however ask, are you planning to drive on your own, or with an American group or hire a local driver here in India?
Vargis, what an ambassador of goodwill you are to all adventurers to create this blog. More acts like this will continue to make this world a better place in which to live with one another. I am from California and have been planning a year long India trip for three years now. Next fall 2019, I will be able to begin the journey at 71 years of age. I have a question for you that I have researched over and over but have not found a satisfactory answer. ( I want to do the Manali-Leh highway for one way, either up or back down).
Which is the better option regarding the Lew and Srinagar region. I only want to drive the highway either up or back down and will fly for the other leg. So is it better to:
1. Drive up in June from Shimla-Manali-Leh and then fly out in August/September? OR
2. Fly up to Srinagar in June and then drive down the highway in August/early September from Leh-Manali-Shimla?
3. And do I have the correct months for up and down?
Thank you for your generosity of time and knowledge.
Randy

I m sharing his number if anyone want…… Mob 7051983936 (owner cum driver of xylo)….. Really a jolly person with a friendly behavior……. No harsh driving…..
Thanks Vargis to keep updating about this beautiful place…..Hats off to ur mind blowing work
Vinay ji
Please share ur experience of leh
1. Whats about at present road condition .
2. Any difficulty you have faced during trip.
3. Have any problem you faced when you cross srinagar.
4. Any other point you want to discuss.
Actually we are also planning to go leh on hyundai I10 as on dated 10/06/2018 via srinagar and comes back from manali route.

Khawinder Sharma
Thanks Vinay Bhai. I am glad that your trip went well. Can you share some feedback on road conditions as well?

Please reply to below mentioned my queries.
1. Please give suggestion to our trip itinerary (any changes needed?)
2. Bike rental- we already approached to Mr.Parvez (as per your blog suggestion), but he have an issue on dropping off the bikes at Srinagar and also we approached Mr. Pankaj (Enfield bike rental) and Ms.Deepika (Manali bike rental). Do you have any idea about Mr. Pankaj’s & Ms Deepika’s bike rental service?
3. We are 11 peoples and we are considering 6 nos of 350 cc classic enfield bikes( 2 people in a single bike), if there is any problem related to comfort with 350 cc bike for travelling with 2 people in a single bike or 350 cc enough? Or we want to upgrade 500 cc? suggest us
4. In our Itinerary day 6 we are planning to travel Leh-khardung la-Diskit-shoyk-pangonk,If this journey is possible in one day? Is this route is opened that time? Also in this route petrol pump is available on Leh and diskit also in Karu (our return journey to Leh from pangonk), so how much petrol we want to store in a can?
5. In our Itinerary day 8, we are planning to travel from Leh to Kargil, in that route after Khalsi there are 2 ways(one way through Lamayuru ,Mulbekh and another one is Dargoo, Batalik). Which way is most beautiful and convenient?
Finally’I wants to tell you, this blog helped us in each and every topic (AMS issue, Oxygen cylinder, stay options in various places, driving tips, route map and etc) for planning our dream trip. We also going to use your route map that you provided in your blog with your permission. Thanking you for creating such a wonderful blog.
Hello Zenifar,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate it and glad that the information posted was of help.
1. You will have to add a day in between to stay in Leh city after you arrive here. This day will have to be used to arrange permits and rent motorcycles.
2. No. I am sorry but I do not have any feedbacks on the other two people.
3. Hire a mix of 350 and 500CC. For Pillion riders, use 500CC and for solo riders, you can use 350.
4. Yes it is possible but you will have to start by first light of the day from leh city.
5. Take the Lamayuru route. For Batalik, you will have to arranger permits.
Hey Varghis,
I am planing to hire an Innova for a family of 3 during my trip to Ladakh in late June.
I will start my journey from Manali and will cover Nubra and Pangong.
Is this vehicle ok for those roads or should I look for alternatives??
Thanks in advance.
Hi Saikat – If you are traveling with family then yes, Innova is a great vehicle.
Hello Vargas Bhai,
Got this news.
HRTC is going to start a bus service on 25th May from Manali to Leh – which will run non stop for 17 hours and will start from Manali at 4 am and reach Leh at 9 pm.The bus will be a delux 2×2 non AC bus. Booking can be done on hrtchp.com from today onwards.
Hi Abhra Bhai, I just saw this comment right after I published an article about this same bus service. Take a look and let me know if this is the same that you heard.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/manali-to-leh-one-day-bus-service/
What is the present road condition from Manali – Kunzum pass – Chandratal – Kaza now?
It is all open now
Thanks Vargis Bhai for info…
Hello Vargis bhai. Like to know whether chandratal camping started or not? If not then when it is expected to start.
Yes Joydeb Bhai, it has already started. Go an stay at Jamaica’s camps. Give my reference and he will take good care of you at a discounted rate.
I have already booked Jamaica camp at Chandratal as suggested by you. Hope we have a nice stay. Thank you once again bro for your assistance and this nice forum.
You are welcome brother. Let Jamaica know that I said Hi.
Sure..I will convey your message..
Thanks Bro
HI Vargis Bhai,
I am planning to go on a road trip from Delhi to Leh via Srinagar & coming back vis Manali. I have made the following plan by my own car (Swift Dzire):
29th June: Delhi to Chandigarh (hv my relatives there so will be there for overnight stay only, planning to leave from delhi in the evening)
30th June: Chandigarh to Jammu
1st July: Jammu to Srinagar
2nd July: Srinagar to Kargil
3rd July: Kargil to Leh
4th July: Leh – Local sightseeing
5th July: Leh to Nubra Valley
6th July: Nubra to Leh (I am deliberately avoiding going from Nubra to Pangong as i have read a lot about the difficult route, specialli because i ll be driving a Dzire)
7th July: Leh to Pangong
8th July: Pangong to Sarchu/Pang
9th July: Sarchu to Jispa
10th July: Jispa to Manali
11th July: Manali to Delhi
Now my queries are:
Q. Do you find any necessary changes in the above mentioned itinerary, please suggest?
Q. How are the road conditions for driving a Dzire to all these locations?
Q. Is it possible to go straight from Pangong to Sarchu in a day if we leave early in the morning? Will we be able to find any place if reach sarchu around 7’o clock?
Q. I am going on the trip with my two kids (3 & 5 years respectively), any specific suggestion or precautions regarding the children?
I just want you to know that I have made this whole travelling plan according to various of your blogs. Thanks for sharing such invaluable experiences with others.
Thanks again Vargis Bhai..
Regards,
Vikas Yadav
Delhi
Hello Vikas Bhai,
Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate it.
1. No change required to your plan. It is very well laid out.
2. You may face some problem due to low GC but you will definitley be able to do the trip. Just go a little slow and be careful around water crossings.
3. Pangong to Sarchu could be a bit tough. If you reached Pang by 2 – 3 PM then continue to Sarchu. If you reached after 3 then stay at Pang, go to Jispa the next day and then Manali
4. Please see the post below.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/traveling-to-ladakh-with-children/
Thanks Vargis Bhai for your encouraging words.. i ll keep your suggestions in mind..
You are welcome Vikas Bhai !!!
Vargs Bhai,
First, i have changed the plan to go from Pangong to Sarchu in a single day, we will now stay at Pang then will go to jispa next day.
Further, I have one more query on my mind:
As you have already read our itinerary, do we need any permits (Inner Line permit from Leh) for Nubra Valley, Khardungla or Pangong or any other roads etc which we take as per the itinerary shared with you??
Hi Vargis Bhai..
First of all i give you my wholehearted thanks because it is your guidance and availability of so many important information available that i was safely & successfully able to conclude the Journey of such a heavenly place called “LADAKH”.
Although there were hiccups initially due to Srinagar flood like situation on 30th June, the same day i was stopped in Jammu by local police and then next day we were stopped immediately after crossing Nashri Tunnel by J&K Police along with other travellers due to amarnath yatra security. But eventually we did reached Leh on 2nd July as planned.
And then after coming from Pangong, as i read your blog about bad condition of road from Pang to Rohtang and simultaneously heard from tourists coming from Manali side that there are very difficult water crossings, we finally decided that we will go straight back to srinagar and not go to manali. So although we could not complete the full circuit, but all in all it was the greatest Road Trip of our lives till date.
And i will be going back some day in future to complete what has been left this time.
Once Again Thank you so much bhai for all the assistance and inspiration..
Vikas Bhai thank you so much for your kind words. I am glad that I could be of help in planning your trip. Do share some pictures if possible 🙂
Hi, I am planning a bike trip starting 3rd from manali to spiti aand the onwards towards leh and then return via jammu srinagar route.
I would like to keep my circuit starting from manali rather than reversing it. Do you think the roads would be opened completely by then?
I would also like if you can give me some tips regarding stays in leh, nubra, pangong and other places that we might want to stay/visit in between, whether it is necessary to pre book or onspot places would be easy to get.
We are a group of three bikers on 3 bikes.
Rough current itenanry:-
chandigarh -> Manali (2nd June)
Manali -> spiti (3rd June)
spiti -> Sarchu/jispa or any other resting point (4th June)
Sarchu -> leh (5th June)
6th June rest @ Leh
leh -> pangong -> leh (7th,8th June)
leh -> nubra -> leh (9th , 10th June)
11th June rest @ Leh
Leh -> kargil/Dras (12th June)
kargil -> srinagar (13th June)
Srinagar -> Jammu(14th June)
Jammu -> chandigarh (15th June)
Roads should be all open by 3rd the way things are moving right now. Most of your itinerary is OK except for the initial for Day 3. Kaza to Sarchu will be extremely tough. Keep it to either Keylong or Jispa.
Also, no need to book your stay anywhere. Just reach your destination, find a hotel per your liking and negotiate an on the spot deal. You will have plenty of options to chose from. If you book, you will just end up paying more.
Thanks, knowing that hotel bookings are not an issue really helps a lot. Also I’ll keep in mind to rest at jispa on my way to leh.
You are welcome !!!
You are welcome. Even Kaza to Jispa will be very long so please ensure that you get an early start, possibly by first light of the day.
OK, sure will keep that in mind and make a decision on the day itself. We did plan our itinerary such that we could avoid driving in dark as much as possible.
Great. Do let me know how your trip went.
“A joint inspection by SDM Manali, police, tourism department and Border Roads Organization (BRO) has discovered that movement of tourist to Rohtang and beyond is safe and all infrastructural arrangements have been made. So, the tourists are allowed to go to Rohtang pass or Ladakh with immediate effect from Saturday,” Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus said.
Thanks for the update Vikram Bhai
I had a chat with a hotel owner at Jispa. According to him, Manali to Leh highway has been opened for tourists.
Thanks for the update Saikat Bhai. A few Tourists and locals are indeed traveling on the route but an official announcement is yet to be made.
Vargas Bhai,
Rohtang Pass has been announced open from today.. got the copy of the letter issued from Kullu district magistrate office..
Thanks for the update Abhra Bhai. I will update the post.
Hi Vargis ,
Called at manali taxi union and they said they have not yet started plying private vehicles up to Leh because officials have not yet allowed tourists for Leh even in small vehicles as of now. Have you heard any update on this ?
That is correct Nilavra. The route is not yet officially opened and it will be another week before BRO declares it so.
Hi Vargis ,
Thanks for the update. People in different forum are shouting that Manali Leh has opened up seeing the message from Kullu DC “Beyond Rohtang Permit”….but when I talked to Manali Taxi union I came to know beyond rohtang means the cars are allowed up to Keylong…they have not started plying vehicles up to Leh.
Could you please get the update from your contact point at Manali and update us what’s the situation….has manali leh really opened up or not ?
Another friend VIKRAM BISHNOI in this forum has posted a message from Kullu DC Yunus and it seems that the highway has opened up completely…Then why taxi union is saying so ?
Confused here…
Road is not yet open Nilavra Bhai but people are traveling on it already unofficially, that is why all the confusion.
Can you go from Manali to Leh – Yes
Is the road Open – Not officially
Can BRO close it still – Yes, temporarily for a few hours or even a day
Why? – Because the work is still going on
Thanks Vargis. Any idea when BRO will allow officially ? May be another week. Right ?
You are welcome Bhai. And yes, about a week at most.
Himachal Parivahan had announced yesterday that they are going to start their Keylong-Leh bus service from 23/05/2018…
It has been posted on their Facebook page..
Thanks for the update Abhra Bhai
Hi Vargis
Do you know any budget hotel in leh near bus stand or main market…please let me know if any…..do u suggest booking advance in leh in june 3rd week ?
No need to book in advance, just reach there, find a hotel per your liking and negotiate an on the spot deal. See the post below for some recommended hotels.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/good-budget-hotels-in-leh-with-tariff/
Hi vargis ,
I will reach Leh from manali by HRTC bus. After getting down at the bus stand if I do not see any good hotel near the bus stand, shall I get any transport to drop me at any hotel or just that I have to walk…it may be difficult for me to walk around reaching there in the evening or late evening it might be..what’s the mode of transport inside Leh city for hotel drop ? or I have to fix the hotel and ask them to send a car ?
Hi Nilavra – Leh is a very small town, you can walk across it in an hour. After you get down form the bus, just take a short stroll around and you will notice several hotels.
Hi Vargis ,
The ATMs around Leh main market is reliable or you advise me to carry all cash ?
No need to carry all the cash. You will find money to withdraw in Leh.
Dear Vargis Bhai, hope you are well. Thanks you for all the support you provided and helped in planning for the leh trip. As we will start in next few days, and doing final arrangements. Could you please confirm if the Leh Manali Highway is open for tourists? As there are different updates online that it is opened but i rely on your information only so please advise. Though we are going from Shrinagar side and will start for Manali from Leh around 6th June.
Also, please guide what exactly should i fill in the ILP form if we are planning to visit below places, i am confused as few people told me if i skip any village it becomes difficult to go ahead, so please help me with exact places that i should enter so that i dont miss any place. We aim to go as below:
Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder – Turtuk – Hunder. Overnight at Hunder
Hunder – Panamik – Pangong via shyok route
Pangong – Tso Moriri if possible else we will go back to leh and go Moriri from Leh
Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring– Moore Plains – Sarchu
Thank you in advance.
Hello Harsh Bhai,
1. Manali Leh route is not yet open. Only locals have started to travel but that too only between Keylong and Manali. It will be another week to 10 days at least before it opens.
2. For ILP, mention the villages you know of in between and then your final destination and you will be OK. Pangong to Tso Moriri via Chushul is strictly off the limits but write, Spangmik, Man, Merak, Chushul, Tsaga, Loma, Nyoma, Mahe, Sumdo. Take a look at the map below and pick the route from here.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/ladakh-road-map-detailed-road-map-ladakh/
Hi Vargis
considering weather this year it may rain heavily late june causing landslide manali leh highway. i am trying to understand how fast BRO works to clear the road. have u heard of road blockage for more than 3 days in last few years ? i have 3 days buffer
I haven’t heard of a roadblock for that long, maximum a day or so but then it really depends the kind of damage incurred.
Is there such chance of rain and landslide during late June?
I will be travelling from Manali to Leh 23rd June onwards 🙁
Not in June. It starts to rain towards mid July.
Hello Vargis Bhai,
Thanks for providing updates.
Please confirm if I require a permit to travel from Sringar to Leh to Manali.
My understanding is that, I can obtain innerline permit from Leh if I start from Srinagar and can travel to Tso Moriri and other places.
Do I require another permit to pass Rohtang while coming back from Leh to Manali?
Geetesh
Hello Geetesh Bhai – Permit is not needed for traveling from Srinagar to Leh and Leh to Manali. You need to get it from Leh for visiting places in Ladakh, like Pangong and Nubra Valley and Tso Moriri. Take a look at the post below where I have explained the entire procedure in details,
https://vargiskhan.com/log/obtaining-ilp-for-ladakh/
Hello,
Not sure about this, but looks like the manali-lrh highway has been opened for motorists…
http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/himachal/manali-leh-highway-reopens-after-5-months/588624.html
Thanks for sharing the information Abhra Bhai
Hello Varghis,
My Ladakh trip is planned starting from Manali on 23rd June.
I have already made all the bookings.
Current situation worries me.
What is your feeling?
June is far away brother. By then, all roads will 100% be open, there is no doubt about it.
Dear vargis bhai
We r decideced to go Leh via Manali on 18th May .But still we r worried about weather and road conditions so pls give us guidance.
Can we start our journey from same date or postpone it for next month
And we all group members r exited to see snow walls
Satish Bhai if you want to cover Manali route then definitely postpone by a couple of weeks please. Manali to Leh will probably remain closed on 18th May.
Hi Vargis Bhai,
I have done all my booking for leh ladhak trip.
I am starting from Srinagar on 28th May.
My return is from Manali. I have to travel by road on 5th June.
By seeing current situation, I am worrying about road transportation.
What I have to do?
How are you traveling from Leh to Manali Ankur Bhai?
ROhtang Pass remains closed. It was open on 6th May. But 7th it snowed and today, 8th also there was snowfall. SO the vehicles were turned back from Losar. I was in Kaza on 6th and 7th May and returned to Rampur only today, 8th May.
Thanks Krishna Bhai for adding this information.
Hello Vargis,
We are planning to go Leh on 18th May via Manali. We also want to cover TSO Moriri. Do we need any permit for TSO Moriri.
Hi Manoj – Yes, Inner line permit is required for Tso Moriri. Please see the link below.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/obtaining-ilp-for-ladakh/

Hello Khawinder Bhai,
No booths, no mechanics and no help points anywhere on the roads if you get stuck. You will have to pretty much depend on people passing by to help so best ensure that you do not get stuck 🙂

Hi Vargis ,Thanks for the update on Rohtang and Baralacha la , Is there any update on Kunzum pass ? and if Baralacha la is opened by May end , tentatively , is it advisable to travel from Jammu – Srinagar – Leh – Around Leh – Sarchu -Manali ? , Is Srinagar – Leh highway open ?
Hi Rakesh – Both Manali Leh and Manali Kaza route are expected to open towards late May as of now. And yes, Srinagar to Leh route is already open.
Hi Vargis ,
Firstly thankuu for your periodic updates…N can u give me any idea if I can experience snow fall or see those famed walls of snow in the 2nd week of June if m travelling from manali to srinagar..in that route..??
Hi Sourav – Snowfall was not that much this year. You will find some snow at Rohtang and Baralacha La top but chances of seeing the snow walls is very little.
Hello Vargis ji…
We are in Salaah, HP tonight and planning to go manali then Rohtang pass.
Please update us latest update of Rohtang pass opening.
Correction. Dalash not salaah
Hello Yogesh Bhai, Tourists are being allowed till Marhi as of now.
Ok… Thank you very much..
Can you please tell site where we can take permit or any person there who can arrange permit for us.
Please take a look at the link below Bhai. I have explained it here.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/rohtang-pass-permits-details-charges-apply/
Thank u for link. This site showing all permits of diesel vehicles r issued till 8.5.18. we hv also diesel vehicle. Now how can we go Rohtang in these 5 days.
No other way brother. These permits gets taken really fast and mostly by the local taxi union
Hi Vargis,
This is absolutely a great resources for traverllers planning for such places. I’ve taken advice from your blog last year when I planned to Sach pass along with my kids… This year I am planning to visit Leh… My kids, 8, and 3 years old didnt faced much issue with Sach pass, do you think I should need to take any much precautions as this seems to be a longer route and higher too.
Please advice.. I am planning to leave at the earliest of opening of the route.
Thanks in advance.
Sachin
Hi Sachin,
You are right. Ladakh is an entirely different story than Sach Pass. Please take a look at the post below. This should help.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/traveling-to-ladakh-with-children/
Great post thanks…
Also is it adviced to go via Srinagar and coming back via manali leh or the other way also good. I’ve nearly 13-14 days if you can advice a comfortable itenary bearing in mind one of my kid is around 3+ years.
Thanks again.
Yes, if you are traveling with family then it is advisable to go via Srinagar and come back via Manali. How will you be traveling and from where?
We are travelling from Delhi by Self Drive Tata Safari. Around Mid may is planned so far.
For 13-14 days, you can travel like this.
1. Dehi to Jammu
2. Jammu to Srinagar
3. Srinagar to Kargil
4. Kargil to Leh
5. Leh
6. Leh to Diskit (Nubra)
7. Diskit to Turtuk to Panamik
8. Panamik to Pangong via Shyok
9. Pangong to Leh
10. Leh to Tso Moriri
12. Tso Moriri to Sarchu
13. Sarchu to Manali
14. Manali to Delhi
If you want a bit of more relaxed journey, or do not want to stay at camps at Sarchu, then change Day 10. Do not go to Tso Moriri. Go straight from Leh to Jispa / Keylong and then to Manali the next day. Additional day saved here can be used to relax at any of the place per your liking.
And when you say self drive Safari, I am assuming you mean a privately owned vehicle, not a self drive rental because that will be a problem.
Hi Vargis,
Any update on Rohtang- Kaza? Is it likely to open by 6th May or should be consider going via Shimla?
Warm regards,
Hi Shubham – That stretch will probably not open until May end so please go via Shimla.
Hi vargis I am planning to visit leh by road from srinagar to leh and want to return through leh manali highway with my own car.. I will probably reached srinagar by 15 th of May..plz set my itinerary for 10 to 12 days up to manali .. does roads will open at that time ? And which places have more chances to get snow… we r travelling with family having one 6 yrs old child also .. thanks u..
Hi Shaliesh, For 10-12 days, you can travel like this.
1 – Srinagar to Karil (16th May)
2 – Kargil to Leh
3 – Leh , rest and arrange permits
4 – Leh to Diskit
5 – Diskit to Panamik
6 – Panamik to Pangong via Shyok road
7 – Pangong to Leh
8 – Leh to Tso Moriri via Chumathang
9 – Tso Moriri to Pang via Tso Kar
10 – Pang to Jispa
11 – Jispa to Manali
12 – Buffer Day
Thanks for the itinerary..does we can explore some snow on roads or not or where we can get the snow and roads will open totally at that time up to manali
Snow this year is very less at most of the places. You will find some at top of the passes en route though.
Hi, this comment is for people looking answer where to find snow near manali in april last week when rohtang is still not opened. So we went gulaba yesterday 29th april with an aim to reach as close to rohtang as possible, but we were stopped at gulaba check point and that is last point where you are allowed as of now. There is literally no snow at gulaba right now. You have to climb uplhill around 7 km to see snow. We took a horse. Be careful they have two kind of rides 500 and 1000 (one way charges), 500 one is a waste because they will drop you halfway and then again you have to walk 4km for snow. We took 1000 one and,it was a good idea to take horse beacuase it is really tiring in this weather and if have kids or senior citizens then climbing on foot not possible. We saw many people who climbed 3-4km and came back without seeing snow because they couldn’t go further. I checked with officers at check post and they said it might open in may 2nd week.(We walked another 1km from horse dropping point)
Thanks Praveen Bhai. Did you find any snow?
Yes, we found patches of snow after climbing 5-6 km 🙂
Friend of mine is in Manali today. It snowing there again now. 🙂
Hello Vargis,
We are in manali from 29 april to 2nd may. I read your update that Rohtang pass is closed again due to snow fall. What are the chances it will open by then, in case it is not open can we go any place near manali to see ice patches?
Hi Praveen – It is hard to say anythign right now. Weather has really been unpredictable for last week or so. Even if the road is not open, you can take a drive towards the pass and go as far as the check post. You will find snow definitely.
Hi Varghis,
Thanks for reply. I can take a bike on rent and ride towards the pass? i don’t need a permit to go till the check post is that correct?
Correct. It is the check post that you need a permit to go beyond.
Hi Vargis
Any update from BRO on opening of Manali Leh road after snowfall on April 21 ? It seems May 5 is even less likely after very recent snowfall.
Hi Nilavra – May 5th will definitely not happen. The recent spells of snow have changed things all across. Even Srinagar Leh highway got closed again yesterday. Road will probably not open until late May, the usual opening time of Manali Leh road.
Hi Vargis ,
I am all set to cross Manali Leh on June 10. Will this open in all probability by then ? What’s your feel ?
Hi Nilavra – It should be all open by June 10th.
Hi Vargis ,
Do you have any good contact of Manali taxi driver who will give me better discounted rate for Manali Leh drop in June ? I know the rate is 20000 for 2 nights reach Leh if you go by the Taxi union rate but geting direct contact of a good driver might help…do you have any ?
Hi Nilavra – Sorry brother, I do not have a contact in Manali. Taxi rates in Manali and Ladakh I know are outrageous. HPTDC bus would be a good alternative if you want to consider for the journey.
Hi Vargis
couple of WD to affect western himalayas in coming days so we should expect a revised update from BRO on manali leh road opening timeline mid of next week….snowfall happening even in May this year….the way it is going right now it seems that the dates might be pushed to end May or start of June…
it would be of great help if you could check update next week….
Hi Nilavra, Yes you are right. It rained all day in Manali on Wednesday and snowed at Rohtang. I will update here as soon as I receive one.
Hi Vargis ,
Meanwhile I find the very latest update here – Despite snowfall BRO is working hard with the jawans..
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/bro-clears-snow-from-baralacha-pass-leh-road-to-open-in-a-week/articleshow/64021872.cms
Thanks for the update Nilavra Bhai
Hi Vargis,
Another thing… Do you know any hotel at Leh very near to bus stand ?
Hi Vargis ,
Is there any taxi stand in Keylong and can I get a private taxi reserved for Keylong to Leh there ? I am planning if I go by bus to Keylong and then take the reserved taxi from Keylong and go up to Leh. Are the taxis available there or we have to wait for any empty car coming from Leh or Manali and it’s on luck. Manali to Leh is very much costly so I was thinking this option other than bus.
Hi Nilavra – Yes there is taxi stand in Keylong but you cannot really book a seat in advance in shared cabs. More like, you go to the stand, find a taxi and board it kind of deal. If you want a confirmed seat than you will have to go with a private taxi.
Hi vargis
i am talking about private taxi from keylong for leh. My question is , are the private taxis available at keylong taxi stand if yes i will go to keylong by bus and then will tKe private taxi so it will be a little bit cheaper compared to manali leh by private taxi….
the taxis available at keylong will either be coming from manali or leh…is that correct?
I doubt there will be any private taxis at Keylong Bus stand. Most of them will be shared ones there. You will have to ask around with travel agents in Keylong for a private cab.
Thanks Vargis…I know shared taxis run from Manali to Leh…Do shared taxis depart from Keylong as well ?
Yes but not that much because most of the tourist traffic comes from Manali itself.
Can Private taxis be arranged by Travel agents at keylong to drop at Leh ?
Yes they could arrange that.
Hello Nilavra,
I m planning to reach manali on 10th… Are you travelling solo or with a group? Let me know…
Hi Vargis ,
I heard before the snowfall couple of days back the HRTC buses was plying from Manali to Keylong but recently it is suspended because of snowfall. I wonder how cum HRTC buses ply up to Keylong crossing the Rohtang pass if tourists are not allowed beyond Marhi even before the snowfall happened. Does that mean if one goes from Manali to Keylong ( not for vising Rohtang top purpose) straightaway they are allowed in HRTC buses ?
Keeping political unrest in Srinagar in mind do you think Srinagar to Leh is advised ?
Hi Nilavra – HRTC buses started in some villages in Lahaul valley itself but not between Manali and Keylong yet. People are still traveling to Kashmir and Ladakh both via Srinagar Leh highway so I guess it is OK because you are just passing through anyways.
Hi Vargis
about mobile connectivity in ladakh…..Do vodafone postpaid work in leh ? if not, then BSNL prepaid work ? or its just bsnl postpaid connection that only work.pls confirm.
All postpaid networks work in Leh City. But in other areas of Ladakh, only a postpaid BSNL network will get intermittent connectivity. Voice clarity will however be bad but you will be able to send texts at least.
Thanks Vargis. I will go Manali to Keylong by HRTC bus so I hope I don’t need to apply for ROhtang permit as the permit I believe stands for the vehicle not for individual unlike Ladakh. Please confirm.
Also Tuesday Rohtang is closed for tourists but can I go by HRTC bus from Manali to Keylong on Tuesday as I don’t need to get down at Rohtang pass…
Hi Nilavra – Yes, the permit is issued on per vehicle basis and not per person. By HRTC Bus, you do not need to get a permmit.
Let me get back to you on the Bus thing. I just dropped a text to my contact in Manali. Last year the buses were not operational on Tuesdays but let me confirm.
When will rohtang is open for tourists?
In another 7 days it should open again. They had to shut it down after the recent snowfall so this time BRO is waiting for the weather to clear so they can open it for once and all.
Thanks a lot vargis for this. We are planning to go to spiti valley from Manali in second week of May. Do you think it will be possible?
It may or may not be possible, really depends on how fast the snow clearing progresses and if weather holds. More information will only be available towards April end.
Hi Vargis , I’m following this portal regularly , Nice work , keep up . Since the Rohtang pass opening tentative date is early May , when can we expect Kanzum pass to open ?
Hi Rakesh, Manali Kaza route is expected to open by Mid May this year.
Hello Vargis Bhai,
We are plannig to visit leh by 22nd of april.
Is it safe?? is road open now??
Hello Syed Bhai,
Yes the Srinagar route is open and is quite safe to travel. You are OK to go.
Hello vargis bhai, thanks for your useful informations…. Dear I m planning to visit Leh in last of may (23 may to 28 may)… Can u tell me the conditions of road and weather at that time… Specially in nubra, pangong, khardungla….. Also tell me that I am opting nubra to pangong via shyok route, is it safe at that time. Can I enjoy snow at that time in khardungla or at any other place?
Vinay Bhai weather in May will be pleasant during day and cold at nights. And yes, you will get to see snow as well at Khardung La.
Thanks dear Bhai for your reply…. What about nubra to pangong via shyok route
Is rohtang pass is open for tourists?
We are planning to go there on 20th April.
Right now it is now but should be by sometime next week.
I am tracking this site for the latest info on snow clearing status. We (3 families) are also planning to go Leh this may. But as per the latest heavy rainfall in last 2/3 days, I think snow fall will be there at higher altitudes. Not sure about the Rohtang paas if that area has got snow fall or not.
Also, as per weather forecast, there is more rain in the till next next Friday. So please suggest, what could be the impact on clearing highways and opening dates.
As of now, the expected date of opening remains to be by early May. That has not changed.
Hi bhai,I had searched several vlogs but I got all my answers from ur blog, really it helped a lot,
But I have a question
We are planning leh from Kashmir highway on 14/04/18 and returning by manali highway on approx 24 / 04/18, so at that time both the roads will be open or not
Thanks Shriyansh Bhai. Chances are very less that they will allow tourist movement on Manali Leh highway by 24th Bhai. Better plan from Srinagar side only. When you are in Leh, ask around if the road is open and if it is then return via Manali. Else go back to Srinagar as planned.
Thanks bro 4 the advise,
U r sure na that Kashmir highway is open to go on 13/14 of april 18
And do u have any local contact no. in Kashmir who can update about the road open status
And by the way we r planning by our own suv
Yes it is already open. See the post below.
https://vargiskhan.com/log/srinagar-leh-highway-status-2018/
Can we travel between last week june and first week of july this year ? how will be the weather ?
Yes you can. Weather will be pleasant enough. Warm days but cold nights.
Sir . Thanks for information I m from wardha maharashtra. Main paheli bar manali se leh aane k bare me soch raha tha.. Please aap thodi help kare. Mujhe permits kaha se leni hai.. Kaise leni hai .
Mera suggestion yahi hai ke aap Manali by public transport pahunch jao and vahan se bike rent karke Leh nikal jaana.
Ha bhai bike manali se hi book karege… Lekin aap ye bataye ki permit ka kaise krna hoga .. Aur rukne k liye koi behtar jagah…
Aap Manali mein Parvez Khan se baat kar lo 9318646559. Bikes rent par deta hai ye and aapke permit ka bhi yahi kara dega agar isse lete ho bikes toh ..
WOW …. by 20th April? So early? That must be a record of some kind. Thanks for updating here brother. I have bookmarked this page and checking daily now.
I know Prakash, definitely it is a record opening this year. Thank you for bookmarking the page.
Vargis Sir, just wanted to say that you are doing a great job sharing all thsi information with travelers. Keep up the good work and thank you once again.
Thanks Yuvraj Bhai
What about the Manali Leh bus? Will that be operational in Mid May this year?
The HRTC bus may get operational by May end but HPTDC bus only starts towards Mid June
Thanks for all your help
you are welcome
Hi Vargis,
I am Manab, already purchase tickets Manali – Jispa – Leh traveling on 25th/26th June. Please let us know about the road condition at that time. any chances to enjoy little snow covered road?
Chances of snow this year will be very less Manab, you may find some at Rohtang and Baralacha La top though. Road conditions at this time will be just about average.
Hello Vargis,
I was planning on visiting Lahaul Spiti / Kaza from Manali , is that a feasible option for May ending / early June ?
What is the typical time duration of Manali to Kaza, Would it be good to Manali to keylong, night halt and then Keylong to Kaza ? What would be the taxi hire charges for a one side drop Manali-Kaza
All advise would be most welcome
Amit
Hi Amit – Yes the plan is definitely feasible for May end or early June. From Manali to Kaza is about 8-9 hours of travel. Keylong is actually in the exact opposite direction so that will not be a good move. Continue straight to Kaza.
Hello Sir,
Thanks for sharing all this info here. Me and my friends are going to Ladakh from 1st June. This is my 3rd time and this time we want to explore tso kar, tso moriri, hanle, umling la and other passes. We want to go there without entering into Leh, so can you please tell, is it possible to go there from Pang? I saw in the maps after Meroo there is a right turn which goes to Tso Kar.
Please suggest.
Sunil Bhai you can go but permits will be a problem. Without permits you cannot go to either of these areas. So you will have to talk to someone to arrange your permits and courier them back to you.
Yes, I have a friend in LEH, he will provide me bike and permits in MANALI… Hope we ll not face any major issue of AMS on this road..
Thank you sir.
If you have a stay planned at Pang then yes you may face AMS here but not after that.
Hello Vergis Sir,
I heard that Umling la and Hanle is banned for Civilians, Is it true?
Hello Sunil Bhai – Yes it is true this year.
can we visit to hanle by following route :
Leh – Karu – Upshi – Kumdok – Kere – Chumathang – Mahe – Nyoma – Loma – Hanle
Hanle is off limits this year. Cannot go. You won’t get the permit.
Thank you for the information sir, but we have already booked our tickets to and fro.. Following was our plan from 1st of June (On bike from 1st to 13th June)
1st June Mumbai – Delhi
2nd June Delhi – Manali
3rd June Manali – Jispa
4th June Jispa – Leh
5th June Leh
6th June Leh – Turtuk (Khardung la, diskit and Hunder)
7th June Turtuk (Tyakshi and other villages)
8th June Turtuk – Pangong (Via shyok road)
9th June Pangong – Hanle
10th June Hanle – Umling la – Hanle
11th June Hanle – Tso moriri (karzok)
12th June Karzok – Leh
13th June Leh
14th June Leh – Manali (innova or ertiga)
Now the hanle and umling la is off limits this year so can you please suggest us the alternate options where we can visit.
Can we get siachen base camp permit in leh office?
Please suggest. Thank you.
All sensitive areas including Hanle, Chushul and Siachen Base Camp are off the limits for tourists. You have no other choice but to return to Pangong from Leh and then go to Moriri via Chumathang. Rest of your itinerary looks good.
Sir
I wish to go Leh Ladakh from Delhi in my self driven hatchback. Is it possible to travel easily? Or I should drop idea?
Vikramsih Bhai you can definitely go. Every year lots of people travel in their hatchbacks so you must not drop the idea. Which car do you own and how old is it though?
Can we go manali to leh by road on 20th may and is there snow to see on this time
Chances are that yes it will be open by then. You may find some snow as well at Rohtang and Baralacha La.
Thanks bro
You are welcome !!!
Hi Vargis.
Is it possible to do Leh in October 2018 all by the public transport from Leh Manali highway and traversing back the same route?
Hi Guneet – HRTC withdraws their bus service by late September so you cannot travel by public transport in October.
Hello Vargis,
Your blog is an inspiration. Thank you very much for that!
We are planning for a ride to Leh from Delhi in either June (last two weeks) or August (last two weeks).
May i know which time is more suitable with respect to road conditions and water crossing and weather?
Also – Will there be any snow in June?
Thank you Suhas. June will be better because that way, you will reduce the risk of Monsoon which will be greater in August. Hard to find snow though as there wasn’t any anyways this year. Whatever little it snowed would probably have melted away by June. There will be some at high altitude passes though, at Rohtang and Baralacha La to be specific.
Hello Ji,, Is it possible to access Chandrataal via Kaza , Kibber by April 22.
It may be possible but on foot with proper trekking and camping equipment and a local guide. By road you cannot reach there until late May at earliest.
Hello vargis khan..is it ok to leh after 20th may??thanks
Hi vargis..is it ok to travEll leh from manali after 20 may? Thanks
Hi Abhishek – Chances are that yes the road will be open by late May definitely so yes you should be able to travel.
Hi Abhishek – Chances are that yes the road will be open by late May definitely so yes you should be able to travel.

Problems in terms of what? Road opening?
Julley,
I have planned the below road trip in rented bike
June 8 – Leh arrival flight and rest
June 9 – Leh – nubra
June 10 – Nubra to pangong
June 11- pangong to hanle
June 12 – Hanle unmingla hanle
June 13 – Hanle to Leh
June 14 – Leh to sarchu
June 15 – sarchu to manali
June 16 – manali rest and evening to delhi
1. I will rent a bike in Leh to roam Leh – nubra – pangong – hanle – unmingla – hanle – Leh
2. Can i take the same bike to manali or should i take a HP registered bike to manali from Leh
3. If I take a HP registered bike , how much should i pay for the one way trip. (Leh to manali) apart from daily rental charges? (any approximate cost ) Is it possible to pay only the rental charges as i will drop the bike in manali?
Thanks in advance
srinivasan G
Hanle to Leh in one day is a bit too long. Break it in two days. Do Hanle to Karzok and then Karzok to Leh. You can take the same bike from Leh to Manali but they will charge you additional for leaving the bike at Manali, about 10-12k apart from daily rental
Thanks for your reply
I was confused as some told that Leh registered bike cant be taken to manali.
I will change the plan to hanle to karzok and then from karzok to leh as u mentioned.
No you can take a Leh registered bike to Manali but will have to pay an additional amount to leave it there. Best would be to discuss it with the bike rental agency before you finalize the deal.
Another thing, if you are going to leave the bike at Manali then no need to come back to Leh. From Pangong, go to Hanle, then go to Karzok and from Karzok, straight to Pang or Sarchu via Tso Kar; and then to Manali.
Hi is the road open for ladakh now?
Right now it is closed
My tickets are alredy done
My tickets are already done
In that case you will have to keep your fingers crossed brother and hope the road reopens. I will recommend that you do the journey the other way around though, Start from Srinagar and exit via Manali. This will give another week before you travel on Manali route. Road usually opens by May end, at least unofficially if not officially.
Hello vargis khan
I m nikhil oswal
I have planned for the route on 22th may 2018 start from
Chandigarh – manali – sarchu – leh – nubra – leh – kargil – srinagar
Is it the good time to vist on this day or road will be closed
Hello Nikhil – If you can then plan towards first week of June. In all probability, the road will be open by May end this year but just to be on a safer side, postpone it by a week or two.
Hey vergis
I am planning to.leh in the month of 20th june 2018 from punjab. Please let me know wheather I10 car is good to visit for 3 persons at leh and local area.
I want to go from via srinagar to leh and back from via Manali.
Your reply eagerly waiting
Khawinder Sharma
Hello Khawinder,
Can an I10 go to Ladakh with three people? The answer is yes in terms of engine power, that will work just fine. Friend of mine has done it in Maruti 800 as well. Problem only arises with low ground clearance for which you will really need a person on the wheel who can maneuver the vehicle around with no damage. Just be careful around bad road sections, water crossings and you will be fine.
Thanks vargis khan for your valuable information.
You are welcome brother. Let me know how your trip went and how did your i10 perform.
Hello Vargis, you are infact of great help answering queries of all individuals. Just wanted to say keep up the good work.
Thanks,
Kumaraswamy
Hello Kumarswamy – Thank you so much for taking the time to drop a note. I appreciate your kind words.

Can you tell me from where you get the rental bike in manali.. even me and my husband also want to go there in bike. We are planning to visit there in last week of April 18
For renting bikes, please contact Parvez in Manali at 93186 46559. Give my reference and he will provide you a good bike at reasonable charges.
Thanks.. looking for your update on opening of Rhotang pass.
You are welcome !!!
Srinivasan Ji – In that case plan like this.
1. Manali to Sarchu
2. Sarchu to Leh
3. Leh, rest and arrange permits and motorcycles. Leave your Manali motorcycles parked in Leh, preferably keep a room at any of the hotels and leave your bikes parked at the hotel so that they remain safe.
4. Leh to Nubra Valley
5. Nubra Valley to Pangong via Agham Shyok road
6. Pangong to Hanle
7. Hanle to Umling La to Hanle
8. Hanle to Karzok (Tso Moriri)
10. Karzok to Leh. Return Leh rented bikes and check your Manali rented bikes.
11 . Leh to Sarchu or Jispa
12. Sarchu or Jispa to Manali
Hello there,
I am planning my trip with parents (aged 60 and 58) from Manali towards Leh via hired car.
Tentative date is 20th June 2018.
I will grateful if you can help me by answering the following questions:
1. Is June a perfect time to travel to Leh from Manali?
2. Is it risky to travel with parents? We are residents of Kolkata and they do not have any respiratory diseases till now. However my mother is having arthritis.
3. What all precautions we need to take to avoid health problems?
4. How is the usual road condition in June?
Thanks in advance.
Hello Saikat,
1. Perfect it may not be but it is a good enough time.
2. Not risky as such and lot of people travel with their parents to Ladakh. I will still however recommend that you consult a doctor about your mother first.
3. A doctor will advise that better Saikat Bhai keeping in mind any previous medical history of your parents.
4. Since it is early in the season, it will be a mix of good and bad with water crossings due to melting snow at several places.
Hi Sir, should i plan to rohtang on april 29 or 30? will it be open this year? if not then where i can find snow during april 30 or may 1?
Chances are that yes it will be open. Snow this year is very less but you should find some towards Rohtang top
Sir I am planning to visit laddakh by car manali to leh. In mid May for 8 days does road open and we may get snow or not.. please advise me the plan..
Manali to Leh road usually opens by late May or early June. This year it may open a bit early but cannot say this for sure right now.
Sir should I start my journey from srinagar to leh then manali or reverse it .. suggest me and my car is dezire petrol and wagonr which I should take and also plan my itinerary for 8 to 10 days
Yes Shailesh Bhai. Start from Srinagar and once you are in Leh, find out about the Manali Leh road. If it is open, then come back via Manali or else return to Srinagar.
Definitely take Swift Dzire on the trip. Do not bring WagonR
Hi vargis ji
Any update?? when has BRO planned to clear manali leh road??? Last year they started 28 feb??? any updates from BRO
No updates so far Srinivasan Ji. It looks like the road will open sometime in May only.
Hi wargis , i will plan stay at manali for 20 to 25 day wich time is best ? Nd i will also want to trip leh by own car … any holiday home i will get there?
Hi Pravin – You plan to say in Manali for 20-25 days? and then go to Leh?
Hi I am planning a trip to Manali from Chennai for 5 days with the hope of seeing some snow. Do you think we can goto Rohtang pass in April? Or should I postpone the trip to first week of May?
Sir, We have planned trip to Ladakh this 30 may. We would like to return via Leh Manali highway… Estimated date of return about 7-8 June.. will the route remin accessible during that period?
Yes it should open by 7 – 8 June
Rohtang opens usually by Mid April so yes, to be on a safer side plan towards end of April or early May.
Hi vargis
Any updates on road condition. Will BRO start clearing road from March 1st .How is the snow fall in this year compared to last. It opened in June first week last year ….. any guess when it will open this year????
Hi Srinivasan – Yes the snow is not that great this year so the snow clearing and road opening may even be a bit early this year.
tq buddy
looking for ur updates as usual….

Hi Nimesh – A car would be better if you are traveling with your wife but that too depends on which car do you have? Also, 7-8 days from where, what is your starting point? Please Let me know and I can suggest an itinerary accordingly.

Day 4 – Leh to Nubra Valley (Diskit) to Leh

There will not be much snow left by June, you may find some at high altitude passes but that will pretty much be it
thanks for your reply.
Can we plan in first wk of may 18,?
also suggest me best itinerary from delhi to leh at that time
Hi Vargis,
Plssss help us out..
we are having a main budget issue.
pls tel us is it possible to plan leh trip under 12-15k/head from delhi. how it could be possible!!!
we r planning at the end of this april month.
The only way to make this a budget trip is to travel by public transport and that will not be available in April so you must delay your trip by 6-7 weeks at least
Thank you so much sir for ur reply!!

Thanks for your valuable suggestion, we were planning to come back via Manali but now we will back via srinagar only. We have Maruti ertiga diesel, is this car comfortable to this trip. Please let me guide. Thank you
Ertiga has a good GC of 185MM but the problem will be that it may feel a bit underpowered at a few places. Try to travel as light you can.
Hi Vargas, I m planning my trip as Ujjain – Srinagar-leh-nubra-pangyong -manali-Ujjain in month of June by skoda rapid. Is this car will be comfortable? (Any issue with ground clearance) ? And how many days it would take for the whole trip? Also tell me budget( for 4 stags)
Hello Akshay – Ground clearance of Rapid will be a problem, it is 168 or 170MM correct? You may end up with its underbelly hitting the ground at several places, or at least lose stones will definitely hit. You are traveling in June which means that there will be several water crossings too due to melting snow. If you must bring your Rapid, safest time would be mid to late September.
Hi, Mr. Vargis, we are planning a road trip from hyderabad to Leh on 20th May via srinagar . We reached patnitop on 23, srinagar on 24 and 25, sonmarg on 26, kargil on 27, Leh on 28 and 29 , nubra on 30 , pangong on 1 june and back. This travel programme is fine or need any change . Please give your susuggestion. Thank you.
Hello Mr. Chawda – Your plan looks fine to me but I must ask, are you planning to return via Srinagar only or Manali?
Another point, you are at Nubra on 30th and then Pangong on 1st June. This will depend on whether the direct route between Nubra and Pangong is open or closed. If closed, you will have to return to Leh on 1st and then go to Pangong on 2nd.
Hi , We are planning a road trip from hyderabad to Leh via srinagar in the last week of May means 20th onwards. Is it right time to go. Can we see snow during trip. How many days required for patnitop srinagar sonmarg kargil leh nubra pangong and return via Manali. Please advice me.
Best to delay it by a couple of weeks. Manali Leh route opens by Late May or early June and since you are planning to return that way, to be on a safer side, prepare an itinerary that sees you traveling from Manali to Leh at around June 10th. A total of 12-14 days is an ideal period for the trip.
Sorry Vargis…..spelled the name incirreinco
No worries brother
Hi Bargis

Hello Ji, Im Deepak from Kerala. im planning for a spiti circuit bike trip from April 20th 2018.
Chandigarh
shimla
chitkul
kalpa
tabo
kaza
chandrataal
rotang
manali
chandigarh
Please give some suggestions.
whether ill be able to cross rohtang
and till where the road will be open,
and wat are the other options in route.
Hello – Manali to Kaza route opens by late May or early June so you cannot travel that way in April. You can reach Kaza from Chandigarh but will have to take the same way back.
Hi Vargis, even i have planned same from 12th may to 25th May 2018. Most likely i will be travelling Namgia to kaza to pin valley to chandratal to Rohtang to Manali b/w 18th May to 22nd May 2018. Is it ok to plan looking at current weather and road clearing condition?
Too early to confirm anything Ashish Bhai. It will depend on how the snow clearing work towards Spiti valley progress in April and May.
Thanks Vargis Bhai, Looking at current weather, and on going road opening by BRO, do you expect kaza to manali road to be open by April 30th 2018? Also will Chandratal be open to go by 30th April 2018?
Bhai to be honest and looking at last few years trends, I am still not expecting for this road to open until early May
Hi… Will be in india the month of may 2018. I will br covering manali and leh via srinagar.. What are the chances to play in the snow in rotang pass and leh sides?
As of now, none. The entire Himalayan region is going through a dry spell this year. There has been no snow at all anywhere so far. Manali and Shimla have not had even a single snowfall so far so whatever little snow is there at Rohtang and in Ladakh will be long gone by May.
Thanks, very nice information .
Thanks for taking the time to drop a note
Can i plan leh ladakh in the end of May this year?
You can but plan in a way that you reach Leh via Srinagar and return via Manali
During January, will Rohtang pass will be open for tourist. Can I see snow
No, Rohtang remains closed in January. You can only travel till snow point, a few kilometers from Manali.
Any chances that it may open in April this year? Can I plan for early May?
Early May is tough, probably won’t either happen or would have just opened. Best to plan it towards Late may or early June only.
