How to Plan a Trip to Ladakh in 2024
Other than knowing whether the road is open or not, there are several other things about the highway that you should be aware of in order to ensure that your trip remains safe and hassle-free.
Some of these details will include knowledge about the route, your accommodation choices, places on the way, and challenges that you may face. Please read How to Plan a Trip to Leh Ladakh – A Complete Travel Guide for more details.
Planning a Trip from Srinagar to Leh
It is not only about the Srinagar Leh highway opening time and the closing date but you should also be aware of the best time to be on the road. Travel too early or late in the season and you are risking ruining your entire trip.
If caught unaware of the situation ahead, you may get stuck somewhere or even turned back. I have covered some of these important aspects in the articles below and would encourage you to take a look at them.

Srinagar Leh Highway in October
The status of the Srinagar Leh highway in October remains open. But a trip in the latter part of the month is never a good idea. It can snow anytime at Zoji La in October.
Though the road may remain open, it can temporarily be closed for a few days. The risk of driving on slippery stretches, of course, will remain in October.
Srinagar Leh Highway in April
Srinagar to Leh road status in April will entirely depend on how much it snowed and how fast BRO was able to clear the snow. Historically though, the road remains closed in the first part of the month and is only open after the 20th.
My advice would be to wait for the weather updates before finalizing your itinerary. Traveling in the first or second week of May will be a much better idea than in April.
Srinagar Leh Highway in May
Srinagar to Leh road condition in May is much better and stabilized as compared to April. It is among the best months to be traveling on the Srinagar to Leh road route. The weather will be pleasant and you will also get to see plenty of snow as well which is mostly all gone by May end.
Srinagar Leh highway in June
Srinagar Leh road’s current status in June is completely open and safe to travel on. This is the peak tourist season in Kashmir and Ladakh and another good month to be on the route.
Srinagar Leh highway in July and August
Both these months are the time of the monsoon season. Though it does not rain in Ladakh so much, it surely does in the Kashmir area. Floods, landslides, and incessant rains are normal occurrences in both these months.
Before you start your journey, please make sure you search for Srinagar to Leh road updates in terms of the weather ahead. Or you can just return to this page and look for updates.
Srinagar Leh highway in September
September is an awesome month for a trip to both Kashmir and Ladakh. The rains would be all gone but would have left plenty of greenery behind in Kashmir for you to enjoy. The barren landscape of Ladakh presents an amazing contrast of colors this month. The road will remain completely open and you are free to travel.
Is Srinagar Leh Road open?
No, Srinagar Leh Highway is closed at the moment.
When will Zojila Pass Open?
Zojila Pass is declared open by around the 15th of April each year. The road was declared closed in November due to fresh snowfall and will remain closed until April.Â

This is a great resource, thanks!!!
My wife and I are visiting India in Early September. We are adventurous travelers in our 70’s. We plan to first visit Srinagar then take a private taxi to Kargil, stay overnight, and get a Ladakh taxi just for us, (as you suggested) for the rest of the trip, taking 2 days. Could you give us some details on getting the Ladakh taxi in Kargil, where? the cost? Extra for driver overnight? Will he stop for photos when requested? What sights best to see in the 2 day trip? Where to stop for 2nd night. Thanks in Advance. Bob

Hello! Looking for expert advise here:
We are four families (8 adults and 5 children) in Leh right now. We have rented three scorpios for self drive. We have our return flights from Delhi on 14th night. Currently the update is that both Manali and Zoji la are closed due to heavy snow fall. What should we do now? Should we wait close to Zoji la, close to Manali side or should we explore the Kargil Keylong route? Please pour in your advise.
Thank you!

How will you be traveling? Private taxi?
I will take private taxi for nubra – pangong tso -hanle- tso morari stretch. Srinagar to Lamayuru , alchi, leh sightseeing will be done by share cab or local transport. Will the road connecting Pangong Tso and Tso Morari remain open at first week of June? We are planning to start at 23 Rd May.
Thanks for your wonderful write up. My whole tour planning is solely based on this.
Yes, the road will be open. Share cabs and buses will be tough for Alchi, Domkar etc. You will just get a direct bus from Srinagar to Kargil and Kargil to Leh. This trip can be planned better if you rent a private taxi or bike. Can you do that?

Iam planning to take a bus or share taxi from Kargil to Srinagar on 28 th of June.Is the route in good condition ? Is it safe to travel by Public transport. ? What are the precautions to be taken as a tourist from the plains as iam from south Indian plains ? How much time it takes for the journey from Kargil to Srinagar by public transport ?
I am travelling from Jammu to Leh via public transport (Shared Cab) on 31st may.
In recent news there are partial curfew mentioned in Srinagar and some unrest in other place.
Is it safe to travel?
I am traveling to sonamarg on 12th June and intend to spend a day in sonamarg and on 13th June would want to visit till drass or kargil and come back the same day. Is it possible does.the army convoy affect our travel time? Are there any events date rule ? Will June see relaxation?
Going to Kargil and coming back will be a very long journey, but it is doable. Just make sure you do not plan it on a Friday and get an early start from Sonamarg. There will be relaxation in the rules by June.
I’m interested in traveling from Srinagar to Leh in August. I would probably want to do the trip over 2-3 days, stopping overnight in Kargil and possibly Sonamarg. What is the best way for me to book this transport, my preference would probably be for a private vehicle with driver. Is it easy to just book a taxi from Srinagar even in the monsoon season? Thank you.
You can talk to Faisal @ 9596410670 to book a cab
Sir, I shall go to leh on 02.06.22. My question is can I go to leh on first week of June by JKTDC bus because I am budget traveller. Please advice.
