After what definitely was a very long wait, Rohtang Pass was officially declared open today for tourist movement. This includes tourists visiting Rohtang Top and crossing Rohtang towards Lahaul or Spiti Valleys both. Rohtang usually opens for tourists sometime in the month of April but extreme weather and a tremendous amount of snow at the top delayed the opening this year by almost a month. Earlier in the month, tourists were allowed until Marhi but that too stopped after a massive landslide damaged the road and left more than 2000 tourists stranded on the road for several hours.
Nonetheless, the road till the top of the pass and beyond is now officially open. Rohtang is one of the most visited tourist attractions of the country and a lot of people have been waiting for the pass to open. People planning their trips to Spiti, Ladakh or Chandratal too were anxious about when the roads will open. As of now, only Rohtang Pass is open and the road beyond to Ladakh or Spiti are still closed. Manali Leh highway is expected to open by 10th June and Manali Kaza road by 15th.
If you are planning a trip to Rohtang Pass in next few days, then please read through How to Plan a Trip to Rohtang Pass. This should give you an idea on some of the important things to keep in mind while planning the trip. Another important aspect of the trip will be the permit for which, I will recommend taking a look at How to Apply for Rohtang Pass Permit. For a list of other places that you should be seeing while visiting Manali, please read How to Plan a Trip to Manali.
Conclusion
If a trip to Manali or Rohtang has been on your mind then you are free to travel now. I hope the information above was of help. If you have any questions; or need any other details; please feel free to ask in the comments section below; or at our Community Forum; and I will be glad to answer.

Hello Vargis Khas Saab Thanks a lot for the news update. We are a group of around 20 people from Kolkata, will be visiting Kinnaur and Lahul n Spiti in early June and will be at Kaza on 11th of June, this year. As per our Itinerary we have planned to depart Kaza on 13th June , moving towards Chandrataal , staying one night at Batal and on 14th moving towards Manali via Rohtang. Can you please throw some light on this itinerary and whether there is any possibility for opening of roads between Kaza and Manali by that date.. I seek your advice also in this respect.
Hello Pulak – Yes it is expected to open betweeen 10th – 15th June but a date is not yet confirmed.
