The Umbrella Academy is the latest offering by Netflix. It is an adaptation of the comic book series of the same name; and tells the story of a family of adopted sibling superheroes reuniting to solve the mystery of their father’s death; and then saving the world from an apocalyptic end. The first season was released on Netflix in February 2019 and mostly received positive reviews.
There is nothing new about The Umbrella Academy really. It is the same story that has been done to death so many times. We have a bunch of superheroes with differences among them. A couple of them are struggling to cope with their powers while others are good at it. They do not see eye to eye on a lot of matters but still manage to work together. And then there is the end of the world coming for which our superheroes set their differences aside and save the day. And that is pretty much it, the story of The Umbrella Academy in a nutshell. But is that all that the series is all about and is it worth watching?
The Umbrella Academy Review
The Umbrella Academy is a total of 10 episodes and when I started watching it, I was bored instantly. And I am being very honest. It is slow and for a while don’t seem to be getting anywhere. A couple of episodes later, I started to wonder if I really wanted to watch it or should I stop. But then I kept going for some reason and by the time the 10th episode ended, I was glad that I did not give up on it. For the first 5 episodes, not much happens and the story develops very slowly. Then it catches on some pace in episode 6 and 7 and turns into a roller coaster ride for the last 3. So if you were going to watch it now, do not give up. Stick with the show and it will redeem itself in the end.
Overall, except for its pace, everything about the show is great. Its humor, action and plot mysteries will keep you engaged. The cast is great and everyone plays their part well. I especially liked Aidan Gallagher playing the role of 13 year old ‘Number Five’ He is fantastic but performances from just about everyone were great. The musical score of the show is marvelous. If you want to watch something that will seem boring but will still keep you curious and entertained with some great action and comedy, then give The Umbrella Academy a try.
Conclusion
It is a Netflix offering so you will have to have a Netflix subscription to watch this. If you do, then watch The Umbrella Academy over the weekend. Just do not give up on it and stay with the show even if it starts to seem dull initially. I hope the review above was of help. Boring because it’s all talk talk talk, the reactions of characters don’t make sense, which to me indicates poor writing and unfinished ideas. Hope to fuck those last 3 episodes are worth it.
