If there was ever an official list put together of passes notorious for being the most challenging and toughest; one candidate for that list will always be Sach Pass. Whether or not it will be on top of that list is disputable but it will definitely be on it. Travel across this 4,420 feet high monster and you will know the definition of the phrase “heart jumped to mouth”. Your trip here will test you, challenge you, mock you, test you but in the end will leave you with ever lasting memories and tall tales of adventurous fun. When is the best time to visit Sach Pass or which month you should plan your trip in is what I will provide details on in this article.

For a brief introduction; Sach Pass is a high altitude pass in Himachal Pradesh. It is also sometimes referred to as Saach Pass and at an elevation of 4,420 meters; and it connects the valley of Chamba with Pangi Valley. It is shortest but the toughest route between these two valleys. There are three roads that lead to the top of Sach Pass. One from Dalhousie/Chamba via Tissa, Bairagarh, Kalaban and Satrundi. Second route is from Manali via Tandi, Udaipur and Killar. The third route is from Jammu Srinagar highway; connecting to Sach Pass either via Patnitop, Doda, Kishtwar or via Anantnag and Chingam. Of the three routes, the ones from Dalhousie and Manali are the most traveled upon; often done in form of a circuit.
The road across Sach is worked and maintaned by Himachal PWD so one thing you can be sure of is that it will be bad. The road will start to deteriorate a little after Tissa; will completely turn into a dirt trail as you start getting close to Bairagarh and then will turn in to your worst nightmare around Satrundi; and will continue to remain so until Udaipur.
A trip to Sach Pass would mean that you will be driving on a narrow badly broken dirt road, with a steep ascent, through numerous water streams; some of which so deep that you might as well just swim across. Add to it the fact that there are several waterfalls on the way; falling right on the road. Landslides and slush is way too common a thing. Lose rocks are spread all across the way. If you are traveling early in the season, then 20 to 30 ft of snow walls will be on both sides of the road. Yes, this is Sach Pass. A dream journey for anyone who has interest in either adventure or off-roading.
Sach Pass usually opens towards the end of June and closes in the first week of October. Even when it is open, there is always a high chance that it may close anytime due to rain and landslides. This pass is the first to receive snow each year, sometime towards September end or October beginning. It is also the last one to open; by June mid or end; way after all other passes and roads in Himalayas have been declared open. The time that it remains open thus is probably the shortest; barely three and a half or four months at top; and even this short time is full of uncertainty. Below is a monthly breakdown of when you can plan your trip, what can you expect in which month and which one of these is the best time to visit Sach Pass.
Sach Pass in June:
For the first half of June; before 15th, Sach Pass remains closed as snow clearing operation continues. It gets declared open sometime around 15th but the road conditions at this time are worst ever. If you want to see snow, you have a chance of finding it in plenty in June. There will be tall snow walls on both sides of the road however this melting snow also creates a lot of slush and water streams on an already terrible road.
Apart from snow; another good side of visiting in June is that you would have lesser chance of encountering heavy rain since monsoon usually starts in this region by July. If traveling in first half of the June, you can take your vehicle as far as Satrundi, leave it there and take a stroll towards Sach top as far as you can go. If traveling in second half of the June, be prepared for driving on probably the worst patch of the road you have ever seen. Hotels in towns on both sides of the pass will be operational but there will be no dhaba once you leave Bairagarh until Killar.
Sach Pass in July:
During this month, snow continues to melt and the road remains extremely bad. There will be several furious and large nallahs en route; some of which will be a monster to cross like Bagotu Nallah. Monsoon will arrive in later part of July and will make things even worse. Nallahs will become furious and chances of landslides too will increase. There will be several waterfalls on the way some of which will be falling right on the middle of the road. Hotels and Dhabas en route however would be all set up by now which they wouldn’t be in June. A good time to visit would be in early July before the monsoon hits.
Sach Pass in August:
This probably is the worst month to go to Sach Pass in my opinion unless you don’t mind riding with water pouring down heavily on your helmet. Snow will be completely gone and rain will be totally on; sometimes even for hours at stretch. August means that you will be driving through slush for most part of the road. Water crossings would have multiplied 10 times including the possibility of a landslide. If that happens, then you may get stuck on the road for hours. If situation worsens, you will have to turn around and go back to the last village / town on the way.
Sach Pass in September:
This by far is the best time to visit Sach Pass. Monsoon would be gone and weather would have turned pleasant. There will be greenery all around and roads would be stable. If however you are visiting in late September, you may find that it already started to snow here. At this time, even in case of a breakdown, your chances of getting stranded are at minimum because a lot of people would be traveling this way.
Sach Pass in October:
Only do it in October if you want to be in “daredevil” mode for once in your life. After August, this is the second worst time to visit Sach Pass. In October, Pass remains open only for few days in early part and can close down at anytime. All the Dhaba-walas would already be gone by now so a high chance of getting stranded if your vehicle breaks down. Temperature would already have dropped to freezing cold. If you must however travel to Sach Pass in October, then do it in the first week itself, no later than that.
Now these were the months when the pass is open but surprisingly, I get asked by people about Sach Pass throughout the year. So here is a general information for rest of the months and what will happen if you planned a trip around this time.
Sach pass in January:
Closed. You will probably not even get to Bairagarh at this time. Rohtang is closed so from Manali side as well there is no way you can reach Sach.
Sach Pass in February: Same as January
Sach Pass in March: If you plan a trip towards Sach Pass in March, you may actually be able to reach Bairagarh. Do it only if you have a lot of snow on your mind. You can leave your vehicle at Bairagarh and walk as far as you can towards Sach. The check post at Satrundi moves to Bairagarh in Winter so you will not be able to drive any further than this.
Sach Pass in April: Pretty much the same deal as March. The only difference is that you will definitely reach Bairagarh.
Sach Pass in May: Same as April
Sach Pass in November: The Satrundi check post would have again moved down to Bairagarh. You will definitely be able to drive until Bairagarh but not beyond the check post. Days at this time will be pleasant but night will be extremely cold. So cold that without a pair of gloves, you won’t even be able to operate a camera.
Sach Pass in December: Closed. If traveling early, you may reach Bairagarh but not after it starts to snow all across the region.
Best time to visit Sach Pass
September will be the best month to plan a trip to Sach Pass. If this doesn’t suit you, then plan for it in June or early July but definitely avoid second half of July and August.
I hope this information on best time to visit Sach Pass was helpful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below or at our Community Forum and I will be glad to answer.

Hello Mr. Haldar – Sach Pass will probably not open by 2nd June but you can go as far as the road is open. And yes, there will be snow towards the top
Best time to open sach pass and travel in himachal
Virgise Bhai Aadab!
If you have any information of current status of Sach Pass please inform, last 21st june i was there with my family, the weather was pleasent that time. My friends force me again to visit Sach Pass on coming 13th July can it possible?
Aadab Nasim Bhai – The pass is open and the road is bad as usual. It will definitely be raining around 13th July there so please be prepared accordingly. Do share some feedback of your trip after you return
Hello sir
i am willing to visit Sach Pass. is it open now? How is snow condition there? is it safe to visit now?
i am staying at Chamba now and wish to visit there with my family in SUV (Innova).
At what time we should leave from Chamba so that we can return back same day to our Hotel by safe timing ?
plz suggest
Yes the pass is open but there is not a lot of snow. Coming back to Chamba same day will be very tough so make sure you start by first light of the day, possibly by 6 AM.

Yes there is petrol pump just before Bairagarh and then at Tandi so you are really OK. Won’t need to carry spare but if you want to, then carry some in 2 liters Pepsi bottles.
Hey Vargis,
We are planning this trip in late july. Is it good for us to go there in that time??
Hi Suyansh – Yes you can go in late July.
Thank you very much.
One more thing i want to ask is that from where can i hire the bikes and tents in DHARAMSHALA who can take those (bikes and tents) in MANALI?? If you have some of references for the same please provide the details.
I am sorry but I do not have any contacts for that.
Will you please suggest me the circuit which can cover sach pass as well as spiti valley.
I have 4 days to cover both on bikes.
Do you mean Sach and Spiti both in 4 days?
hello vargis did u tell me about the route from udaipur to killar via sach pass
Take a look at this post Farhan
https://vargiskhan.com/log/plan-trip-sach-pass/
Hi Vargis,
You have a grt info abut this circuit.
I am traveling to Dalhousie this week and was planning to visit Sach pass to njoy some Snow & Glaciers.
Its a family outing and we are a group of two couples along with one 4 yr old kid.
Is the Sach pass open & accessible during this time of the year. If not till what extent can we travel on this route and experience some snow around..
Will it be doable in a day Dalhousie > Sach Pass > Dalhousi.
Pls advise. Appreciate your Help.
Thanks
Hi Anand,
1. No the pass is not open right now and will not be for another 10 days.
2. For now, you can travel as far as Satrundi check post, a few kilometers before the top.
3. No you cannot do Dalhousie to Sach to Dalhousie in a day. That is way too long for one day.
Hi Vargis,
Thanks for the quick turnaround. Appreciate it.
So if the pass is closed and we can travel till only Satrundi, is there any chance of getting snow cover around that route.
Also apart from this are there any other places around Dharamshala & Dalhousie where we can experience a bit of Snow cover at this time of the year.
Also if you could guide me on some must visit places around Dharamshala & Dalhousie where i ca get some Picturesque Photographic landscapes ?
Thanks
Hi Anand – You will have to leave your cars at the check post and then walk a bit towards the pass to see some snow. Only other place that I can recommend right now is Rohtang Pass. At Dharamshala, I will highly recommend the Triund Trek. It actually is from Mcleodganj, a few kilometers further up from Dharamshala. Go up on Day 1, camp there for the night and climb down to Mcleodganj on second day.
Hi Vargis,

Binny Bhai give me a call tomorrow please. My number is 8800185132.
Sir please call me 9816300804 binny rajput texi driver bairagarah
I will call you Binny Bhai
Thanks also Vargis for your inputs. Updating my plan as suggested.
You are welcome. Do let me know how your trip went once you return.
Hi Vargis,
Last question, Do I need Ladakh Stand for this Trip?
I already have Rynox Saddle Bag and a Trekking Bag which I am going to use as tail bag.
Thanks,
Yatharth
Hi Yatharth – Ladakh Stand? You mean the luggage carrier?
Yes.. I mean the stand …. 🙂
Sorry the lagguage caarier…
Well to be honest I have been riding around for last 10 years and have never felt the need of a luggage carrier. Just buy a few good quality bungee cords and a long enough nylon rope. Use the bungee cords first to put the bags around the bike and then secure them with the nylon rope. That will do the job.
Hi Vargis,
A big thanks to U for the amazing tips on planning Sach Pass and Leh trip….
Take a bow my friend, keep inspiring!!
Here’s my plan for Leh trip via Sach Pass (start point – Chandigarh)
A friend of mine traveled through the same route in July, hence I have taken notes of all the important things….
But would like to hear from you if this plan looks good and if there is anything else which I need to take care of, thanks again.
See you soon buddy..

Solo Bike trip :-
Start journey :- Chandigarh – Sach Pass – Keylong – Leh |
Return journey :- Leh – Keylong – Manali – Chandigarh – Mumbai |
Detailed plan :-
9th Sept : Chandigarh to Bairagadh.
10th Sept : Bairagadh to Killar.
11th Sept : Killar to Gulabgarh/Kishtwar AND back to Killar.
12th Sept : Killar to Sarchu.
13th Sept : Sarchu to Leh.
14th-16thSept : Leh, Pangong, Nubra and nearby places..
Return journey
17th Sept : Leh to Sarchu
18th Sept : Sarchu to Manali
19-20thSept : Manali (1-2 days sightseeing).
21th Sept : Manali to Chandigarh
Hello Prachit Bhai – Thank you for your appreciating words. Your itinerary looks doable mostly. You may have to change the Killar – Sarchu part to as Killar to Jispa to Leh and then Jispa to Leh. You will also need to add a day’s stay at Leh to arrange permits so just three days, 14th – 16th, to cover all other places is very difficult. Best would be to add a couple of days here.

Hi Vargis,
I am traveling Solo on a Pulsar 220 on the following route:
Delhi(27)-Chamba(27)-Sach-Pangi(28)-Sarchu(29)-Leh(30)-Kargil(31)-Leh(1)-Nubra(2-3)-Pangong(4)-Keylong(5)-Spiti(6-7)-Narkanda(8)-Delhi(9).
Trip starting 27th August 2017 and end 9th August 2017.
Please let me know if this is doable. If not then please tweak it.
Thanks,
Yatharth
Hi Yatharth – Can you throw in a couple of more days, you are traveling a bit much on several days.
I may drop Spiti Narkanda from this plan.
I think it is better that you do. Keep Spiti for a different time otherwise you would just end up rushing through for most part of your trip. On 27th, start by 2 AM from Delhi and take it all the way to Bairagarh. Day 2 you will be at Killar and Day 3, reach Jispa. You won’t make it to Sarchu. From Jispa it is a straight run to Leh but start early in the morning. Pangong to Keylong is also not doable at all. Reach Pang on this day, stay there for the night, start early the next day and reach Manali.
Sir mera name or number b sach pass ki wab site mail deal do plz taxi driver hu sair Binny thakur 09816300804

Hello Vargis.khan bhai
Hum 3 dosto ko next year mid june se by bike srinagar aur leh visit krne k liye haridwar se ride start krni h. aur isi ke sath hum sach pass krne ki bhi soch rhe hain.
Kya hmare liye ye route theek rhega?
Haridwar, jammu, srinagar, leh, keylong, killar, sach pass, Dalhousie, haridwar?
Ye plan total 15 din ka hai
Plz suggest me.
Hello Shakir Bhai,
Haan plan bilkul theek hai 15 din ke hisaab se, easily saara cover ho jaayega
Thanks bhai… Waise kya hum leh – killar same day pahuch kar killar me night stay kr sakte hai?
Agar kisi bande ko bike riding experience na ho to usko as a pillion sach pass karne me aap ki kya suggestions hain?
On pulsar 220F
Bhai Leh to Killar aap ek din mein nahi kar sakte, minimum 2 days chahiye honge. And yes, agar kisi ko bike riding ka experience nahi hai toh usko as a Pillion lekar chaliye but ensure ke jis bike par 2 log hain uska pick up vagerah achha ho. Behtar hoga ke jis bike par 2 bande chal rahe hain uspar saman kam bandhna. Baaki saman kisi aisi bike par baandh dena jispar akela banda chal raha ho
Thanks bhai
You are welcome Bhai
Anyone riding to Sach pass from Dalhousie or Banikhet on 24 Jun ….
We are planning to go Sach pass on 27th june from dalhaousie of this year. plz let us know road status during dat time..is it possible to cover the route from dalhaousie to sach pass in one day? will we get snow there ??thank you..
Road is open but in a terrible condition. You will find snow at the top of the pass however cannot make it a day trip from Dalhousie.
Hi,Is here anyone who is planning to ride leh, sach and spiti this year in end of June or July 1st week,I’m looking for a riding buddy,I don’t want to ride solo for such a long trip.
Hi sandeep you can join us
me and my friend are going to leh via sach pass
1st July
you can call me at 9990988667
Hi bro,
Road status please as we are planning to go sach pass on 18th June 2017.
It is open now Manu Bhai
Hi Vargis,
Thank you for a detailed article.
We are planning to visit in last week of June. I think this year little rain Wil start by that time, now my questions and doubt are as follows
1. Can we travel with a family of 2 kids 7 year and 2.3 years
2. Would we be able to c snow
Please advise
Hi Sachin – The pass will open sometime after 15th June so yes you will be able to go at that time and will see plenty of snow at top of the pass. There wont be much rain though so no need to worry in that aspect. And yes, you will be Ok with traveling your kids as long as you are confident and skilled as a driver.
Much Appreciated, Thanks.
One more query – is it possible to attempt it in a day from Dalhousie or do you advice to take a halt at Bairagarh first day then go to the pass and come back to either bairagarh or back to Dalhousie second day
You are welcome Sachin !!!
In a day is not possible at all. On 2nd day too, if you started early from Bairagarh, it will still take you at least until noon to reach back Bairagarh if you rushed because the roads are really that bad. I would advise to make it a 3 day journey. Go to Bairagarh on Day 1, go to the pass and return to Bairagarh on Day 2 and come back to Dalhousie on Day 3
Vargis Bhai I m Rohit can u gmme some taxi number from tissa I am planning to visit sach in September
Hi Rohit Bhai – Try Binny thakur 09816300804
Hi Vargis,
we are planning the trip from delhi-dalhousie-khajjar-chamba-sach paas-delhi start date 23rd june what could be the best way with minimum time taking. we will go by public transport.
Hi Jayati,, You can travel by HRTC bus or the shared taxis that locals use to ply on the route.
Hi i am thinking of doing the same.. starting from Delhi on 23rd late evening. I have roughly 5 days and i think it is doable in 5 days but in any case I will be glad if you can share the rough itinerary.
Yes it is doable in 5 days. You can follow the following itinerary.
1. Delhi to Bairagarh (start by 3 AM from Delhi)
2. Bairagarh to Killar
3. Killar to Keylong
4. Keylong to Manali
5. Manali to Delhi
Or the following itinerary.
,
1. Delhi to Dalhousie
2. Dalhousie to Bairagarh
3. Bairagarh to Sach Pass to Bairagarh
4. Bairagarh to Chamba or Khajjiar
5. Chamba / Khajjiar to Delhi
We are two riders planing for sach pass on 22rd june from indore if any body interested please mail me [email protected]
Will be going to leh via sach pass here is my plan
let me know if this is doable
1st July – Delhi to bairagarh – 700kms.
2nd July – Bairagah to udaipur – 140kms.
3rd July – udaipur to jispa –
4th July – Jispa to rumtsee – 260 km
5th July – Rumtse to pangong – 232 km
6th July – Pangong to leh – 225 km
7th July – leh to hunder – 126 km
8th July – Hunder to leh and leh local – 126 km
9th July – leh to pang or sarchu – 174 km
10th July – pang to manali/kasol – 300km
11 th July – Delhi – 537 km
It is doable indeed but the first two days involve long riding hours. Ensure that you start from Delhi by 2 AM so that you can reach Bairagarh before dark.
Sarchu ti manali can be done in a day right ?
and what about leh to hunder how much time does that take usually
You can easily do Sarchu to Manali in one day. From Leh to Hunder is about 6-7 hours depending upon your speed and breaks.
How are the road conditions after dalhousie till bairagarh
And what will be the weather conditions in early July at sach pass
will it be full of snow and slush ?
Narrow for most part of it. As you get closer to Bairagarh, it will be badly broken with lots of water streams and even waterfalls falling straight on the road. You won’t find snow anywhere, could be some left at top of Sach Pass
Yes we will start by 2 or max 3 amd we are only 4 people so i think till evening we will be at bairagarh otherwise will take a halt before
If you started by 2 then yes I think you should reach Bairagarh by evening but it will be one hell of a long and tiring ride.
Hi brother
Any update as we will be doing bairagarh to killar on 17th june please let us know status of the roads as we will head toward killar to kishtwar nextday
Hi Prince Bhai – It is expected to open around June 15th but no confirmed date yet.
Hi
Road status please as we are planning on 16th June 2017
Still expected to open by 2nd week of June.
Route Plan
23th June – Friday
Delhi – Pathankot – dalhoiuse – Bairagarh ( 680 Km )
24th June – Saturday
Bairagrh – Killar ( Sach Pass )
( 76 Km)
25th June – Sunday
Killar – Patnitop Via Kishtwar
( 240 Km)
26th June – Monday
Patnitop – Amritsar
( 280 Km )
28th June – Tuesday
Amritsar – New Delhi
( 465 km)
Hi is this Itenary ok for june end
It is doable only if you started from Delhi by 2 AM on first day. If you cannot then you will have to break this part in two days.
Sir Can I go to Sach pass from Bairagarh and return to Pathankot on the same day directly from there?
Aman – Yes you can but if you do, then you will have to start really early in the morning from Bairagarh towards Sach Pass. If you want to reach Dalhousie from Bairagarh before it gets dark, ensure that you are back to Bairagarh from Sach Pass before 11 AM.
Thank you for the reply sir. I wanted to know how much time does it actually take to reach Sach Pass from Bairagarh
Greetings
Hope you are doing fine, I need your suggestion again for attempt to Sach Pass in mid July with Scorpio.
Can we do the complete journey via Dalhousie to Sach Pass and returned back via Killar to Rohtang/Manali to Delhi in 6 days or need to more days.
If the journey not completed within 6 days so we returned via same route Sach to Dalhousie.
And also tell me how many km Delhi to Sach Pass via Dalhousie and Rohtang to Delhi its maybe 1500 km or more.
Hello Nasim Bhai, Yes you can do the complete journey in 6 days easily. Distance would be about 1600 kms for the complete circuit.
Thanks a lot VK Bhai
Welcome Nasim Bhai
Hello Vargis,
I’m sorry I’m posting it again but i’m not sure my comment got posted.
We will be leaving Delhi on bikes on may 26th and will be taking below route.

Hello Gurminder Bhai , You comment did get post at other article.
Sach Pass will not open by June 2nd week at earliest, that is the expected date as of now. You will not be allowed to go any further than Satrundi check post at your date of travel.
Thank you so much for quick reply 🙂
Sir can you please tell me the source of this information so that I can convince my friends to postpone the dates.
Source are the locals in Lahaul and Spiti valley that I befriended during my visits.
Hello Sir, please let me know is Sach pass is good option to reach Leh by motorbikes to avoid one day waiting period on Manali in end of June?
Hi Ankur – Yes you can do it but it will add more days in travel time. Why not go from Srinagar and return via Manali? What is your itinerary?
Hello Khan bhai,
I wish to visit this place in the last week of June. We are a group of 8 friends. I intend to make this a one-day trip: Dalhousie – Sach – Dalhousie.
1) What vehicle do you think would be best suited for a group of 8?
2) How much would the cabbie charge for this trip?
3) How much time is required for such a trip? (Would one day be enough?)
4) Is it feasible to go during June?
5) What to expect once we reach there?
6) Any other suggestions from your side..
Hi Harmit Bhai,
No you cannot do Dalhousie – Sach Dalhousie in a single day. It will take a minimum of 2 days at the least. What you can do is start from Dalhousie on Day 1 and reach Bairagarh. On Day 2, start early from Bairagarh, visit Sach Pass and be back to Dalhousie by late evening (be advised though that you will probably reach Dalhousie after dark).
1. You must go in an SUV, if a 4×4 then an added advantage. I have been to Sach in a Safari 2×4 though with 5 people in it.
2. I am not really too sure about the cab charges in Dalhousie, never dealt with one there.
3. 2 days at the least, 3 would be better if you can afford.
4. Yes June will be fine but there may still be some snow left towards the top of the Pass.
5. Narrow roads until Bairagarh, Broken, extremely narrow and really bad roads after Bairagarh until Sach top, scenic beauty, some snow and one hell of an experience,
6. Why come back to Dalhousie though? Why not add a few more days and travel to the other side and exit at Manali?
Hi! this Varun from Kolkata, planning a trip from Amritsar by bike on 27-28th August, want to cover the route pathankot-dharamshala-dalhousie-chamba-killar-sach pass-udaipur-chhatru-chandratal lake-kaza-spiti-nako-chitkul-shimla;
Need your advice how to complete this route day by day, and staying locations, and total how much days it will approximately takes to finish this route.
You can cover it in the following manner,
Pathankot – Chamba
Chamba – Bairagarh
Bairagarh – Killar/Udaipur
Killar/Udaipur to Keylong
Keylong to Chandratal
Chandratal to Kaza
Kaza to Komik to Kaza
Kaza to Nako
Nako to Kalpa
Kalpa to Chitkul
Chitkul to Sarahan
Sarahan to Shimla
This is more of a relaxed journey without traveling for way too much on any day. Can you afford these many days?
No, we can’t afford that number of days,
we want to complete in between 8-9 days.
Please suggest within lesser days. & Please share on an average how many km we can ride per day on that tough routes.
You can do the following.
Pathankot to Bairagarh (Start early from Pathankot) about 8-10 hours ride.
Bairagarh to Udaipur (Long ride again because of bad roads)
Udaipur to Keylong
Keylong to Chandratal
Chandratal to Kaza
Kaza to Nako
Nako to Kalpa
Kalpa to Chitkul
Chitkul to Shimla (A long ride again so ensure you start by first light of the day from Chitkul and do not take too many breaks on the way)
I am planning a solo driving trip by my Innova this September. Do you think its o.k. with Innova or should it be nothing less than 4×4.
Ive already driven upto Khardungla…..how does this Sach Pass stand in comparison????Please give your valuable tips….
Innova and September are both perfect for a trip to Sach Pass Suj. There is a huge difference in both the passes and Khardung La is a walk in the park as compared to Sach. Both the ascent and descent of Sach Pass is a nightmare when it comes to road conditions. Though the ascent is pretty much the same as Khardung La, it is just the narrow and terrible roads that make Sach even more difficult.
what is the rate of the shared taxi
From where to where? It won’t cost you much depending on the distance, a couple hundred at most but it is highly inconvenient.

then tell me only the route without 5 to 6 days from pathankot to pathan kot
It depends on when you are travelling. By Bus I would recommend sometime in July. You can do,
1. Pathankot to Bairagarh
2. to Killar
3. to Keylong
4. to Manali
5. to Pathankot.

Sach Pass remains closed in March Sumit. You will have to wait until June at least.

Thanks for providing this information Aneesh Bhai. How did you return? Via Srinagar or Manali?
Via Manali.. Srinagar was quite volatile and didn’t wanted to take a risk..
Yeah I agree … it is still quite tense over there. What itinerary did you follow in Leh?
Khan Bahi, Please find the Itineray I followed
Day 1 : reached Leh by evening
Day 2 : Leh (DC office was closed due to Eid, Visited local places)
Day 3 : Leh (Permits)
Day 4 : Leh – Turtuk
Day 5 : Turtuk – Hunder
Day 6 : Hunder – PangongTso (via Shyok)
Day 7 : PangongTso – Leh
Day 8 : Leh – Hanle
Day 9 : Hanle – Tso Moriri
Day 10 : Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Keylong
From keylong I followed Manali-Kasol-Tosh-Mandi-Prashar Lake-Tirthan for the next few days.
I used to start by 6-6.30 am on all days and reach destination by afternoon, except for day 10 where I reached Keylong by 7.30pm
Did you come back from Pangong to Leh and then go back the next day all the way to Hanle, in the same day?
You could have taken that tsaga la route via chushul from pangong tso to hanle..I am highly inspired to visit Sach pass..Gonna try this year for sure..Cheers!!
Nasim Bhai when are you planning to travel? Crossing sach pass in an Endeavour can be a challenge due to its large turning radius. After crossing sach pass, you take the road to Udaipur and exit near Keylong on Manali Leh highway from where you can continue towards Leh.
Our planning in June 2nd week, but as you say Endeavour can be challenging and Alto more challenging due to ground clearance. can you suggest again can we attempt by alto with 3 person?
Alto for Sach Pass will be a no due to its low ground clearance and lesser power. Take the Endeavor but b very careful around the turns, specially near Killar.
Good Day Khan bhai,
I am getting on with a ride to Leh next week. Planning to start from Amritsar on motorcycle from September 10 most probably by 1.00pm. I am riding with a pillion (wife). My initial plan was through Kashmir but looking at the situation thinking about doing this via Sach route. Can you please see if the below plan is feasible.
Day 1: Amritsar – Chamba
Day 2: Chamba – Killar
Day 3: Killar – Jispa and onwards
I have heard that the terrain in hard, but with some extra care can we do this stretch with the above plan?
Thanks
Aneesh
Hi Aneesh – You can do it but Day 2 will be a very long and rushed ride which I would not recommend on this terrain. A better plan in my opinion would be,
Amritsar to Khajjiar
Khajjiar to Bairagarh
Bairagarh to Killar
Killar to Keylong
Keylong to Pang
Pang to Leh
Khan bhai, I did the ride and yes, it was challenging especially because I had pillion(wife) and luggage for 1 month road trip. I did a poor judgement on crossing Sach pass by evening but was able to reach Khillar safe by 8pm. Reached Bairagarh by 3pm and decided to halt at Khillar. The experience was thrilling as well as frightening. 🙂
Aneesh Bhai – I can’t imagine how it must have been crossing Sach Pass in dark, must have been frightening. Thank god you made it home safe.
Quick question … Can you give me a quick update on how the road conditions were? Around Sach Pass and on Manali Leh highway? It will be of help to other planning to travel.
From Baigravgarh to Sach pass the condition is what you can say, rocky. I struggled quite a lot as I was with pillion and luggage. But it’s okay if you are not in a hurry, just be careful. After Sach pass I couldn’t see much of a road due to darkness, but there were stretches with Sand heap and bikers will have to be careful.
From Killar to Keylong, the road is almost the same till Udaipur. The bridge connecting Tandi and udaipur was broken and we had to cross the stream. Also road widening(by rock blast) was happening around Tandi.
Keylong to Leh is quite okay. I covered the distance in 11 hours. The roads are good till Zing Zing bar with Gata loop getting fresh tarmac. From ZingZing bar to Pang it’s mostly bad roads and can take a toll. After Pang it’s 80% good roads to maintain speed.
Hi Hemant – You can easily find a place to stay in Killar. This is just a small villge but does have options in terms of accommodation. For taxi, you will have to rent it from Dalhousie.
Comming to your itinerary,
Khajjiar to Killar in a day – Not possible at all. Khajjiar to Bairagarh is 7-8 hrs at the least and Killar is another 8 hrs minimum from Bairagarh. Please do not attempt. This area is very secluded and terrain is challenging so high chance of getting stranded. If you get stuck somewhere after dark, you will be in trouble.
Killar to Dalhousie in a day – Same as above.
Even your taxi driver wont agree for this. Your best choice would be to follow what I suggested.
Hemant
Hi Vargis… Really thankful for your detailed review but have few questions, your response will help making our trip the fabulous one. We are travelling to Dalhousie on Sep 3 and returning Sept 6 (Evening) so have approx 3 full days to visit Sach Pass, We do not have any idea on how to start the journey and from where in Dalhousie to start with a Car. Can you please guide of what will be the most suitable ?
4 days for Sach pass will be a really tight journey brother. Where are you travelling from if I may ask?
We will start from Dalhousie itself…. So an expert input would be really helpful.
If you are starting from Dalhousie then yes it is doable in 4 days.
1. Dalhousie to Bairagarh
2. Bairagarh to Killar via Sach Pass
3. Killar to Bairagarh
4. Bairagarh to Dalhousie
Thank you Vargis for your comment….!! Can you tell from where could we could the Taxi (Will do or not) & how could we find a place to stay in Killar (Or nearby village) ? How if we could modify this itinerary like-:
1) Dalhousie to Khajiar (Activity there) & stay at Dalhousie.
2) Early Morning move to Killar via Sach pass (Can you tell how much time will it take) overnight stay
3) Visit nearby villages in Pangi Valley & overnight stay.
4) Back to Dal & enjoy there.
Hi Vargis,
We are going to visit Sach pass this week from Delhi. We are going by Beat and Swift.
Any idea about the weather and will the Cars be suitable for Sach Pass roads.
Any advise
Thanks
Expect a lot of Rain Ankur, lot of slush and water streams to cross as well. Monsoon is at its peak so it will be quite a journey specially if you are travelling in hatchbacks. Be very careful around water streams, inspect carefully before you cross so that you do not end up damaging your cars.
Hello bhai
We are planning a trip from Delhi to sach pass than to spiti and back to Delhi. We are a group of 4 with 3 RE THUNDERBIRD 350CC. We are planning in the month of September can you suggest how long would it take for this itinarary. As we think 10 days are suffficient. You added advice would be greatly beneficial.
Please help us plan this trip.
Thanks
Hello VC – 10 days are more than sufficient brother …. Delhi to Sach Pass and back can be done in 5 days as well.
bhai
can u please help us create an itinerary for our trip based on your experience to both locations (sach pass and spiti valley) as we are feeling confused about the stoppages since we are not familiar with the route and locations for staying.
Your advise would be very helpful.
Thanks
10 days to cover both Sach and Spiti can be a little tight VC …
Mr. Ahmad – You can try taking it, have people get off when the car refuses to climb but considering the monsoon, all the water crossings and steep ascent, my honest advise would be that you do not.
Good day! Can we visit Sach Pass by own alto K10 with 5 person just after Eid?
No Nasim Bhai you cannot unless you are planning to buy a new car this Eid and bury your Alto atop Sach Pass before you return.
Ohhh! Yes my dear brother, have a plan for buy new SUV InshAllah Please make Dua.
InshaAllah …. But I doubt that you will be able to complete the journey in an Alto with 5 people in it. How old is your Alto?
2011

Hi Vargis,
I am from Delhi, planning for a weekend trip (3-4days) with my friend. can we spend 3-4 days around Sach Pass ie what all places are to visit nearby are hotels available. I like rain a lot at high altitudes, sach pass came into my mind. thanks brother
Sach Pass in 3-4 days is not really possible brother … you need a minimum of 5-6 days for this trip

Hello Bro,
How are you? This is Sachin from Bangalore. We need your expert advise for our below plan:
Dates: 6th Aug 2016 to 22nd Aug 2016
Number of days: 17
Number of people: 2
Places (our dream) we want to explore in our trip:
Mughal Road
Kishtwar
Killar
Sach Pass
Spiti
KInnaur
Pangi
Narkand
The route I found from various forums and google map is below:
Delhi – Panipat – Kurukshetra – Ambala – Ludhiana – Jalandar – Pathankot – Jammu – Mugla Road – Shopian – Anantnag – Kishtwar – Killar – Sach – Keylong – Spiti valley – Tabo – Kinnaur – Pangi – Narkand – Shimla – Chandigarh – Ambala – Kurukshetra – Panipat – Delhi.
Google map shows a total of 2244 KM. We are travelling in 2 RE Desert Storm 500 CC.
We badly need your advise on our below questions:
1. Is the above route correct? (If not please edit)
2. Can we cover this in 17 days?
3. How will be the climate during Aug 2016?
4. What is the difficulty level?
5. Any other suggestions/links/advise?
Your advises helped us a lot during our last Leh ride. Looking forward to hear from you.
Have a good day..
Cheers,
Sachin
Hello Sachin,
1. Route is correct.
2. You can easily do it in 17 days
3. You will face heavy rains in August, specially around “Anantnag – Kishtwar – Killar – Sach ” this area. The best time to do this route in my opinion would be in September.
4. Since you mentioned that you have already been to Leh on motorcycles, you will not face much difficulty except while crossing Sach Pass. That can get a little tricky considering the bad weather, narrow and difficult roads.
5. Let me know what your itinerary is and I can make suggestions.
Planning a trip in July after 7th
Delhi – Sach pass – srinagar – kargil – leh – Manali – Delhi
Need help for Sach pass crossing… How long would it take from Delhi towards srinagar via Sach pass on two wheels…. KTM 390 (4 bikes)
Any help here is really appreciated.
Thnak you.
Yogesh Gehlot
Have you prepared an Itinerary yet Yogesh? What route are you taking? If you are planning Delhi – Manali – Sach, then it would need a minimum of 4 days to reach Jammu and that too would be a bit rushed. For a relaxed ride, you would need a minimum of 6 days for Delhi – Manali – Sach – Chamba – Jammu – Srinagar.
i just crossed it last weekend. Awesome but nerve chilling experience. If you are an avid traveller and dare devil, then go ahead. If you wanna drive then take a 4X4 or if you are an expert driver then any car will go…I had a good experience driving the swift ZDI through hills of pir panjal from Dalhousie to Manali through Chamba and sach pass into killar valley and lahaul spiti, udaipur and den manali through rohtang. Pls try if you havent
Agreed
Do you think it will be fine to attempt Sach Pass in September end? We want to travel by bus preferably.
There is no bus service at Sach Pass … you will have to get a shared taxi if you can find one …. September is fine
