Below is the most recent list of Kargil Taxi Union Rates. The list below contains rates for renting a taxi from Kargil for traveling toward Srinagar, Zanskar, and Batalik routes.
The images of the rate list below are not too clear but if save it to your hard disk and zoom in, you will be able to read it clearly. I will also add the rates for some of the common routes here in the post as a quick reference.
The most important thing to remember while renting a taxi in this region is that the local unions do not allow taxis outside of their district to ply their routes.
So any taxi rented from Srinagar cannot be used for sightseeing in Zanskar and Ladakh. Kargil taxis cannot be used for sightseeing in Kashmir and Ladakh.
Similarly, Ladakh rented taxis cannot be used for sightseeing in Zanskar and Kashmir. For example, if you rented a taxi from Kargil, it can only drop you at Leh city and Srinagar but you cannot use the same cab for visiting local tourist attractions in either of these places.
Similarly, if you arrived in Kargil in a Leh or Srinagar registered cab, it is only good enough for dropping you at Kargil. If you want to travel toward Zanskar Valley, you will have to rent a local taxi from Kargil.
I agree that it sounds like an expensive affair and an unnecessary hassle for tourists but that is the way it is out here. There is no other option or way to work around this.
Taxi Services in Kargil
There are three types of Taxis available for rent in Kargil and their fares are different.
- XUV and Innova fall in Category 1 and are the most expensive of the lot.
- The second category consists of Xylo, Scorpio, Tavera, and Qualis. The fare for this category is slightly less than the first Category.
- The cheapest taxis available are Sumo and Bolero
There are no hatchbacks and Sedans available for rent. Even though the fares for these SUVs are different, the margin is not really huge and they will cost you almost the same.

Helpful Tips
50% of the total fare must be paid in advance in long routes like Manali, Srinagar, and Padum. If the taxi is used for more than the specified days to the destination, additional charges will be Rs. 2503 for a full day and Rs. 1250 for half day. A full day here means 8 hours and 4 hours as a half day.

Hey vargis! We are a family of 10 and are planning a road trip to leh ladakh in august. We will be in Kashmir before that. Can we get a tempo traveller in Sonmarg that will take us to leh with a night hault at kargil? What would be the cost for this? Also, how do I get in touch with a cab operator to book this trip? Well our trip to Leh failed. My wife got altitude sickness and spent a night in hospital in Kargil. Luckily were were staying at a hotel there with a fantastic manager who looked after us. We stayed there 4 days and then returned to Srinagar. We were at the Royal Kargil and the managers name id Mehraj. That’s two failed attempts by us to get to Leh, 1988 and 2023. However I plan to return alone next year to complete the trip. What is the earliest dates in 2024 that you think traveling to the Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake would be possible. I am hoping to fly to Srinagar in early May if possible.

Bhai that rate will differ depending on the route you chose. But ideally it is at least a 2-3 days journey either via Padum or Srinagar
My wife and I intend to do the Srinagar to Leh road in early September. After much reading we have decided to do Srinagar to Kargil on day 1 then get a Ladakh Taxi in Kargil for a 2 day trip to Leh including stops for Mulbekh Monastery, Lamayura, Redzong Monastery, Alchi, Likir Monastery, Sham Valley sights. Can you give us any idea what this 2 day trip will cost in private taxi? We are senior travelers, both in 70’s. We visited India as our first overseas destination in 1988 but could get to Leh from Srinagar because of road blockages, so we want to do it now.
It will cost you between 10 to 15k for two days.

I am planning Leh Ladakh – from 17 June to 24th June 2023. It’s me and my friend and we are doing this 8 Days journey with a tour group. However, this package doesn’t include Kargil and the other packages that include Kargil, don’t include Tso Moriri. So, we were planning to go ahead with this package and do Kargil War Memorial by ourselves.
I am planning to take a shared taxi from Leh to Kargil on 24th June 2023 Saturday and would like to visit the Kargil War Memorial the same day. For this route, my questions are:
1. Is this doable ?
2. If yes, what is the current rate of shared taxis from Leh to Kargil ? And where do I find one ?
3. I know that Kargil to the war memorial is also a 1 hour journey. How can I cover that – hiring another cab, bus, etc. ?
4. Should I stay in Kargil or Drass ?
And we would like to catch an 8.00 pm flight on 25th June from Srinagar. My questions for this are:
1. Is this doable?
2. If yes, and I am living in Kargil, will I get a shared cab from Kargil to Srinagar? Where and what cost?

Hi Darshi – It is doable but not by shared cabs. You will have to hire a private taxi for this considering your tight schedule. Rent a taxi from Leh, have him drive you all the way to the war memorial, visit there and then come back to Dras for the night stay. The next day, use the same taxi to go back to Leh but for the return journey, you can take the Batalik route rather than going back the same way. That way you will cover the Aryan Valley as well.
This is how you should plan it. Attempting this by shared cabs will be a hassle. I will not recommend it.

Me and my friend are going to do Leh-Ladakh via a tour group. We have planned to separate from them in Kargil by noon , after visiting war memorial. I was advised by a friend that I should travel from Kargil in the morning on the next day. So my questions are.
1. In which area of Kargil should I stay for 1 night?
2. Other that taxi, what are the other options to travel to Srinagar and how much will they cost?
3. My Kargil-Srinagar travel date is 3rd June. So do I need to book the transport now or I can get adhoc booking on the 2nd June?
1. Bhai Kargil is a very small town. You can stay anywhere you get a good hotel. It hardly takes 15 minutes to get out of Kargil
2. The only other option is by Bus or shared cab.
3. If you are traveling by public transport, I will recommend pushing your travel dates a little. Public transport can also not be booked, it is an on the spot deal

How much will it cost for renting a car and how much for a cab from Kargil to Srinagar? Which are the sites where I can book either of them now?
Also, I need to book a bus/car/taxi for my travel from Srinagar to Jammu on 5th June morning too. So request your advice for that too.
What I meant was to postpone your trip a little as the bus service has not started yet. But if you cannot do it then it is fine. You will get public transport between Kargil and Leh in the form of shared cabs. Just go to the Kargil taxi stand. Hopefully, depending on the weather, the bus service should also start by then.

Thank you for your comprehensive posts. Im planning to travel from Kargil to Srinagar by taxi on 20/7/22, and my flight from Srinagar airport is at 430 pm on the same day. Would it be doable in case i leave early, as i have heard that the weather is uncertain and the road after Zojila is prone to jams and landslides which could cause delay and also, Kargil Diwas is a week later on 26/7.
Hello Pradeep – This journey will really be a rushed one because you will also have to consider the traffic you will run into after you reach Srinagar. Then you will also have to reach the airport a couple of hours early. My advice would be that you do not keep it on the same day and reach Srinagar a day before.
