I just wanted to make this short post as I have had a lot of people asking me whether or not it is safe to visit Kashmir right now. To be honest, I really do not have an answer to this question. When it comes to Kashmir, things can change there in a matter of minutes; and no one can really assure you of anything. The recent attack on CRPF convoy that left 42 soldiers dead has the entire country and the valley on edge right now. Curfew has been imposed at several places and chances of a widespread violence too are great. Right now, I will say that the current situation in Kashmir for tourists is not that great. If you were planning to visit anytime soon, I will strongly recommend that you put your plans on hold for now; and wait until things settle down a bit.
With that being said, even at a later time, please do not go by anyone’s words in terms of safety. Do keep in mind that there have been instances when tourists ended up dead in Kashmir; most recent one was in 2018. If you were planning to visit, do your homework and follow some guidelines. Keep a check on the news and if there is any word of unrest, then better not go and either cancel your plans or postpone. Visiting Kashmir around 26th January, 15th August, Amarnath Yatra too is not really a great idea. In the month of Ramzan and around Eid, the entire valley and the shops remain closed so that too will be a bad time to go.
Current Situation in Kashmir for Tourists
I have written another post a few months ago, Is Kashmir Safe for Tourists that I will recommend you to take a look at. But for now, visiting Kashmir is not the best thing to do. If you have vacations in hand, then plan for Uttarakhand and Himachal instead. Wait for a few weeks and see how the situation right now unfolds. If things calm down, you can plan a couple of months later.
I hope the information above was of help. Once again, please know that I am no expert in these matters; and merely posting this from a common man and traveler’s point of view. Use your own judgement on whether or not you want to visit; and do not just go by my or someone else’s word. If you have views to share on the matter, please feel free to do so in the comments section below; or at our Community Forum. I would love to hear from you.
