Zanskar Valley Taxi Rates – Updated Rate List

Mentioned below is the most recent list of Zanskar Valley Taxi Rates. The fares shown below include money that you will pay to get to Zanskar Valley from Kargil and then for renting a cab in Padum for local sightseeing.

Please note that the list below does not include the money you will pay to get to Kargil from either Leh or Srinagar. The reason behind this is the different unions of cab operators in all these areas and the disputes among them.

The most important thing to remember when traveling to Ladakh or Zanskar is that the local taxi unions here have the entire region divided, and they do not allow a taxi from another district to ply on their routes.

So in order to visit Zanskar Valley and sightseeing there, you will have to rent a cab from Kargil Taxi Union. But in order to reach Kargil, you will have to rent a cab from either Ladakh or Srinagar taxi union. Sounds cumbersome and expensive? I agree.

Taxi Rules

In a nutshell, a taxi rented in Kargil cannot be used for sightseeing in Ladakh or Kashmir. Similarly, a taxi rented in Ladakh cannot be used in Kargil, Zanskar, and Kashmir. A Srinagar rented cab cannot be used for sightseeing in Zanskar or Ladakh.

So for example, if you were coming from Srinagar and rented a cab there, this cab can only drop you at either Kargil or Ladakh. But to visit any local attractions in these places, you will have to get a locally registered cab of the union there.

Similarly, a Ladakh rented taxi can only drop you at either Kargil or Srinagar but cannot show you around. This is a hassle indeed but there is really no option or way to work around this.

Zanskar Taxi Services

There are three types of Taxis available for rent in Kargil and their fares are different.

• XUV and Innova fall in Category 1 and are the most expensive of the lot.
• The second category consists of Xylo, Scorpio, Tavera, and Qualis. The fare for this category is slightly less than the first Category.
• The cheapest taxis available are Sumo and Bolero

There are no hatchbacks and Sedans available for rent. Even though the fares for these SUVs are different, the margin is not really huge and they will cost you almost the same.

Kargil to Zanskar Taxi Fare

After you have arrived in Kargil, you will then rent a cab to get to your desired destination in Zanskar Valley. The fare will depend on your destination and the type of the cab you choose.

Zanskar Valley Sightseeing Taxi Rates

After you have arrived in Zanskar Valley, you will then have to rent another cab in Padum to show you around. In all probability, the driver who brought you to Padum from Kargil will not be allowed for sightseeing.

But do talk about this with him before you start from Kargil. Since it is the same taxi union, sometimes these guys have contacts and can drive around in Zanskar Valley as well.

Conclusion

 The rates may seem a little high but a private taxi is a good choice if you were traveling in a group of 5 or more people. If you were traveling solo or in a smaller group then shared taxis can be a good alternative to private cabs. A shared cab will be a bit inconvenient but will cost far too little.
