Well, several tourists have died in Ladakh because of altitude sickness, including a friend of my own. Hence, it would be in your best interest to take it very seriously.

For most people, their first day after landing in Leh is usually difficult. There is no other way around it but to allow your body some time to adjust. It is highly advised that your first day should be spent in the hotel, waiting for the symptoms to subside.

You should not plan anything for this day. If you feel better by evening, you can take a stroll through the market. You can also visit Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa in Leh City.

If your condition worsened, please seek medical help immediately. There are hospitals in Ladakh that are well-equipped to handle medical emergencies, especially because of altitude sickness.

Sightseeing in Ladakh

The second point is in terms of local sightseeing. The answer to this question is both a yes and no.

If your plan was to visit all of the major tourist attractions, then 6 days is ample time for that. If however, you want to experience some remote areas of Ladakh, visit some lesser-known places, and experience the culture and lifestyle here, then 6 days is a bit short to do all that.

On a 6 days trip to Ladakh, you will still get to witness the beauty that Ladakh is. You experience the enchanting culture, get a taste of adventure, and have plenty of time to click loads of pictures.

The remote regions, however, like Changthang Valley, places like Hanle, and both the roads leading to Leh will have to be left out for another trip at another time.

Inner Line Permit

Please note that Inner Line Permit is a mandatory requirement. You rest in Leh all day on Days 1 & 2 and spend time arranging permits, making arrangements for the journey ahead, and for local sightseeing in Leh City.

By Day 3 your body would have acclimatized and you will cross Khardung La. Even for the next 2 days, you will spend time in Nubra Valley which is actually at even a lower altitude than Leh city. So once again, no risk of more gain in altitude.

The third reason is that you can easily follow this itinerary irrespective of your mode of travel, even if traveling by public transport. In peak tourist season, there is a regular bus service to Nubra and Pangong. Even if you could not find a bus, you will easily find a shared taxi from the Leh bus stand itself.

The fourth reason is that in case you were thinking of hiring a taxi or renting a motorcycle, it will give you plenty of time to do so in the first 2 days. You can try out a few motorcycles, ride them around in the city for a couple of days and be sure of them before heading towards Nubra or Pangong.

Last but not least, if AMS hits you harder than you thought and your situation worsens, you will at least have the choice of getting medical assistance at the start of the trip itself.

Day 1 & 2: Arrive and rest in Leh

Most of the flights to and out of Leh are early in the morning which really works in your favor while visiting Leh Ladakh in 6 days.

It means that you will arrive in Leh early in the morning on Day 1. It will give you an entire day to rest, acclimatize and take care of a few necessary things. On Day 7, you can take a flight out early in the morning again and be home in a couple of hours.

The first task for the day after you arrive in Leh is to find a place to stay which is not really a problem. No matter what your budget or preference is, you will easily find a hotel to your taste. The second task will be to arrange the permits and the third one will be to make travel arrangements.

If you were already suffering from AMS and doing all this seems like a big hassle, then just rest at the hotels and leave all of it for Day 2. If you were feeling better by evening, visit the local market and see the sunset from Shanti Stupa.

Also read: How to Plan a Trip to Ladakh with Children

Arrangements for your Stay, Permits & Transport

For travel arrangements, you can either rent a private taxi or rent a motorcycle. Renting a private taxi will be the best choice and if you do so, make this arrangement as well in advance. That way, the driver can pick you up straight from the airport and drop you at the hotel.

After taking care of this, you can do some local sightseeing in the town. Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, the local market, and monasteries like Thiksey, Hemis, Stakna, and Shey are some of the places you can visit.

Day 3: Leh to Diskit

By your third day, your body would already have acclimatized to high altitude and symptoms of AMS subsided. On this day, you will cross your first high-altitude pass, Khardung La, and reach the enchanting Nubra Valley.

An early start from Leh is highly recommended as it would give you ample time for sightseeing on the way. Khardung La is merely 30 odd kilometers from Leh and it shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours to get there.

At the top of the pass, there is an Army canteen where they serve tea and some refreshments. You have two choices for this day.

About 80 kilometers from Diskit is the small village of Turtuk, the last village on the Indian side of the borders. The culture of this village is entirely different than what you would have seen so far in Ladakh. The people here are of Balti heritage and mostly Muslims.

The landscape of Turtuk is also different. While Ladakh is mostly a barren wasteland, Turtuk is all lush green and a sight to behold. To get here, depending on where you spent your Day 4 in Nubra Valley, you will have to drive all the way back to Khalsar Village.

A little after Khalsar, the road bifurcates. One will take you uphill to Khardung La and Leh while the other will take you towards Agham Village.
