I had spent six years of my life in <strong>Delhi-Noida<\/strong> and was familiar with every nook and corner of the town. Suddenly everything around me changed, and now I was in Bangalore, the third-largest IT hub in the world. And that is how my bike trip to Wayanad from Bangalore happened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bangalore is also known as the &#8220;<strong>Silicon Valley of India<\/strong>&#8221; for its role in the software industry globally. Although things around me changed, one thing never changed, which was a quest to explore more of India. Once settled in the new city, it was time for me to start exploring the southern part of the country, and what could have been a better place to start other than Kerala?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kerala is one of the most visited states in India; and it is also known as &#8220;<strong>God&#8217;s Own Country<\/strong>.&#8221; The state is famous for its hills, architectural masterpiece, backwaters, and culture. Another reason for selecting Kerala was its easy accessibility from Bangalore; as the <strong>Karnataka-Kerala Border<\/strong> is only 200 kilometers from Bangalore. Once the state was finalized, I had to determine which location in Kerala I should explore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first reason I decided to visit Wayanad was for its proximity to Bangalore. Another reason was the option of multiple tourist destinations, i.e., <strong>Bandipur National Park<\/strong> and <strong>Udagamandalam<\/strong> (also known as Ooty). Therefore in this article, I will be sharing my bike ride to Wayanad from Bangalore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I will also be sharing the places I covered during my entire journey and hope this will be helpful for anyone planning a trip to Wayanad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a Kerala, and it is one of the 14 districts of the state. Wayanad lies in the foothills of the\u00a0<strong>Western Ghats of India<\/strong>, and the average elevation of the district varies between 700 to 2100 meters above sea level. It lies in the northern part of Kerala, forming a state border with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The distance of Wayanad from some prominent places is:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Wayanad to Bangalore: 280 Kilometers; can be done in a day<\/li>\n<li>Wayanad to Mysore: 130 Kilometers; 5 to 6 hours total<\/li>\n<li>Wayanad to Ooty: 115 Kilometers<\/li>\n<li>Wayanad to Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala&#8217;s Capital): 450 Kilometers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_to_Visit_Wayanad\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why to Visit Wayanad?<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although there is no explanation for visiting a place yet, there are many reasons for one to visit Wayanad. As the district lies in the Western Ghats of India, it has a wide variety of flora and fauna. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Western Ghats of India is one of the eight &#8220;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hottest hot-spots<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; of biological diversity in the world, and it is apparent in Wayanad too. While the state has fertile plains for rice cultivation at the same time, the highest peak shoots up to 2100 meters above sea level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The state is blessed with many rivers, and they form several lakes attracting tourists. It is also famous for its rich cultural heritage and temples.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Edakkal Caves<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thirunelli Temple\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">depicts the rich history and cultural amalgamation of the state. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The route also has some of the tourist attractions like\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mysore Palace<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bandipur National Park<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, making Wayanad a perfect tourist destination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Reach_Wayanad\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How to Reach Wayanad<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since Wayanad is located close to some of the prominent and significant cities of South-India, arriving in Wayanad is not a challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The National Highway 275 and Kerala State Highway 33\/766 connects Wayanad to Bangalore. If one is looking for public transport, then Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KRTC) buses regularly ply on this route.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As the majority of the district is underhill covers, the possibility of a rail route is less. I decided to keep the journey for three days and informed my friend working in Chennai, and he agreed to join me on the trip. With everything in place, I was all set to explore my first tourist destination in south India and Kerala.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bangalore_to_Mysore\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bangalore to Mysore<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We left Bangalore at 6 AM and headed straight on the National Highway connecting Bangalore to Mysore. We took Outer Ring Road and then continued our journey on National Highway 44, connecting Bangalore to Hosur in Chennai. I have ridden on some of the best roads in India like the Delhi-Udhampur, Delhi-Agra, and Agra-Lucknow, and the NICE highway is no less than any other highways mentioned above. It took us 5 hours to reach Mysore, and in-between, we took two breaks, one for breakfast and another to straighten our backbone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mysore_Palace\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mysore Palace<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Once we reached Mysore, we had to take the by-pass to skip the city traffic. Although I was more interested in exploring Wayanad and less in Mysore, we skipped the by-pass road and entered into the Mysore city to get a glimpse of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mysore Palace<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mysore-palace.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24692 size-full\" title=\"mysore palace\" src=\"http:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mysore-palace.jpg\" alt=\"mysore palace\" width=\"800\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mysore-palace.jpg 800w, https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mysore-palace-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mysore-palace-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/mysore-palace-585x331.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Mysore place is the second most visited place in India after the Taj Mahal. I didn&#8217;t want to miss this opportunity of being so close to the palace yet not to see it. We rode close to the Mysore place and saw the palace from outside. I clicked a few photos from outside and admired the construction and vision of those who commissioned it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mysore_to_Wayanad\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mysore to Wayanad<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After spending 15 minutes outside the Mysore Palace, we decided to move on as we had to reach Wayanad by evening. It took us another forty minutes to cross the bustling roads of the Mysore city, and once we crossed the city, the ride became smoother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From Mysore, there are two routes to reach Wayanad. The smaller road goes through the State Highway. We took the Bandipur National Park route as I had read a lot about this park.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bandipur_National_Park\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bandipur National Park<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Bandipur National Park hosts the second highest tiger population in India. At the same time, it is the largest habitat of wild elephants in South Asia as well as in southern India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One thing to keep in mind is that the road passing through the Bandipur National Park remains closed from 6:00 PM to 6:00 Am. The reason is to avoid human conflict with wild animals. A day-long frustration of riding a bike in heat and dust, all eased out in a second. The route is a single laned road, and the forest department has built small speed breakers to prohibit drivers from driving fast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bandipur_to_Wayanad\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bandipur to Wayanad<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We were in no hurry and instead rode at the slowest possible speed we could. Once we crossed the park, Wayanad was only 40 kilometers more and it took us an hour more to reach there. Upon arriving in Wayanad, we quickly found accommodation near\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sultan Bathery<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and concluded the first day of our ride to Wayanad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sightseeing_in_Wayanad\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sightseeing in Wayanad<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The next day we started early in the morning, and our first place to visit was the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Edakkal Caves<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, followed by the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Phantom Rock<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. In the evening, we deiced to explore some of the famous waterfalls of Wayanad like\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Soochippara Falls\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meenmutty Waterfalls<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The caves are famous for their walls, which contain a collection of\u00a0<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Neolithic rock engravings and images<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. As the cave lies at an elevation of 1200 meters, a hike is mandatory, and the state tourism department has built iron stairs to facilitate the same. We took 30 minutes to reach the entrance gate of the cave. The markings on the wall looked like the writing of ancient Pharaohs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Whenever I visit places with historical importance, I feel a sense of pride for belonging to a country with such a long and rich history. While Edakkal Cave was splendid, I was annoyed by the crowd as they created unwanted noise and chaos. It is a natural metamorphic rock formation that resembles a human body with a distinctive head and body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I didn&#8217;t find the Phantom Rock appealing as I had seen some best rock formation and stories on my\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledgeofindia.com\/the-bamboo-trek-of-meghalaya-complete-guide-to-mawryngkhang-trek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bamboo Trek in Meghalaya<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and therefore decided to proceed to the next destination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Karapuzha_Dam\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Karapuzha Dam<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We headed to the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Karapuzha Dam<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as it was another six kilometers from the Phantom Rock. Karapuzha Dam is an earthen dam built on the Karapuzha River which is a tributary of the Kabini River. Karapuzha Dam is not a very big dam; and its primary source of water is the Karapuzha River; which itself is a non-perennial river. After covering these three places, we decided to return for lunch; and then continue our travel in the evening for some waterfalls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Soochipara_Falls\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Soochipara Falls<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The prominent waterfalls to explore in Wayanad are Meenmutty Waterfalls and Soochipara Falls. We decided to ride for Soochipara Falls, hoping we will also see home hills and greenery of Wayanad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The restaurant where we had lunch, his owner informed us that since it is summertime (we were traveling in March), most of the waterfalls are either dried up or have very little water. It was terrible news for us and a heavy toll on our trip. The waterfall has less water, but the walk and nearby scenery made our evening ride memorable. We clicked a few photos and enjoyed the ambiance before deciding to return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Banasura_Sagar_Dam\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Banasura Sagar Dam<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the last day of our trip, we planned to cover two famous places, i.e., the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Banasura Sagar Dam<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thirunelli Temple.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0The next day we rode for the Banasura Sagar and reached the dam by 9 AM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To reach the barrier and reservoir, one has to park their vehicle and use a shared taxi service; which costs 40 rupees per person. All the distress of yesterday&#8217;s visit to Karapuzha Dam was compensated by visiting the Banasura Sagar dam. We spent two hours clicking phots and walking over the dam. There are several adventure activities organized near the dam, like rock climbing and zipline. Once satisfied, we deiced to ride for our last destination, which was the Thirunelli Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thirunelli_Temple\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thirunelli Temple<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thirunelli Temple<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is located 40 kilometers from Banasura Sagar Dam on the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wayanad-Bangalore road<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0via Nagarhole National Park. It was a suitable option for us as we rode through Bandipur while coming and Nagarhole while returning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One more hour of ride and we finally reached the Thirunelli Temple. The Thirunelli temple has a unique architecture, and its location is the main reason for its attraction. The temple lies amid the hills and route passes through the remote villages of the Wayanad district.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Surrounded by the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brahmagiri hill,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the temple is dedicated to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lord Mahavishnu<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(Supreme deity). We went inside the temple and prayed for our successful return to Bangalore and, at the same time, thanked for a hassle-free trip. Both the National Parks have similar topography; it is just Bandipur National Park is more famous due to the high density of the tiger population.
