#000000;">About Aharbal Waterfall

Aharbal is a small village in Kashmir Valley, located about 70 kilometers from Srinagar and 15 kilometers from Shopian. The place is best-known most for its spectacular waterfall which in recent times has started to get referred to as the Niagara Falls of Kashmir.

The waterfall is named after this village and is formed at a spot where the Veshaw River or Nallah Veshaw flows through a narrow gorge of granite boulders. The water falls about 25 meters at 3 different places before it flows down the valley.

The first fall is a smaller one through huge rocks and is hardly noticeable. More than a waterfall, it looks like the water is just flowing through the rocks.

The second one is slightly higher and the water forms a pool-like area immediately after it, as you can see in the image above. The third fall is the highest and the noisiest one.

The entire setting of the village and the waterfall is quite peaceful and suitable for expeditions, trekking, photography fishing, etc. If nothing else, it still is a good spot to just sit down and gaze at the mighty river flowing through the huge rocks and falling down.

The river that the waterfall is on is known by a few different names like Veshu River, Veshaw River, or Veshaw Nallah. Once the water of the river freezes in the winter season, the waterfall starts to look even more beautiful. Take a look at the short video below to know what I am talking about.

How to Reach Aharbal Waterfall?

Aharbal Waterfall can be reached only by road from Srinagar. The best way to travel is by your private vehicle or a taxi. Public transport is also available on the route in the form of buses and shared cabs.

Let me first provide details on how you can reach Aharbal waterfall by different modes of travel. After that, I will cover other details like where to stay, what else to see, itinerary planning, etc.

In order to reach Aharbal, you will first have to reach Srinagar of course which is fairly easy. For people traveling by their own vehicle, you can just drive to Srinagar city by the regular Jammu – Srinagar highway NH44.

You can also take a different route and travel by the Mughal road through Rajouri – Peer Ki Gali – Shopian.

If you were however not traveling by your own vehicle, then Srinagar is well connected to the rest of the country by Air, Train, and Bus service. No matter which part of the country you live in, you can easily reach the city by either flying or boarding a train.

If you need more details on traveling to Srinagar, please take a look at this post How to Plan a Trip to Srinagar.

How to reach Aharbal Waterfall from Srinagar

After you have arrived in Srinagar, getting to Aharbal is not that difficult. If you were traveling by your own vehicle or a rented cab/motorcycle, you can travel by either of the below-mentioned routes.

Route 1: Srinagar – Pulwama – Shopian – Aharbal Waterfall

Route 2: Srinagar – Awantipora – Kulgam – Aharbal Waterfall

Let us take a look at both of these routes in a little detail.

Via Shopian

Traveling by the Shopian route, starting from Srinagar, your first destination will be Pulwama. The one via Pampore will see you traveling on NH44 for the initial part of the trip and the traffic will be less.

It doesn’t matter though because the travel time will be almost the same. The idea is to get to Pulwama by either of these routes. Once you reach Pulwama, the road continues straight to Shopian and you will stay on it.

You will reach Shopian and cross the entire town to get to its other side. From there, you will have to turn left to go to Aharbal. Do not continue straight on the road as that will take you to Rajouri via Mughal Road.

If you are unable to spot the left turn to Aharbal, just ask any of the locals and they can point you in the right direction. Just keep in mind that you have to cross the entire town of Shopian first and then turn left.

In terms of the distance, it will be a journey of about 65 kilometers. Travel time will be in the range of 2-3 hours, depending on the traffic.

Of the total distance, it is only the last 15 kilometers of the journey which is a steep climb. For the remaining 50-odd kilometers, the road mostly remains flat until Shopian.

Via Kulgam

The second route will have you travel through the town of Kulgam. It is the longer of the two routes and the travel time will also be greater.

Starting from Srinagar, you will first exit the city and reach NH44, also known as the Jammy Srinagar highway. Stay on NH44 for the first 50 kilometers of the journey, cross Awantipora on the way, and continue driving toward Anantnag.

About 10 kilometers before Anantnag is a small village called Bijbehara. This is where you will leave the highway and turn right to go to Kulgam.

You will continue driving for another 20 kilometers, cross several small villages on the way and reach Kulgam. The road until Kulgam will mostly be a flat one with no climb at all anywhere.

Aharbal is about 26 kilometers from Kulgam and this is where the road starts to climb up a little. You will drive through a few more small villages on the way and reach Aharbal.

The total distance covered will be around 100 kilometers. Travel time will be in the range of 3-4 hours, depending on the traffic and your speed.

Which Route to Choose?

Which route should you pick? It entirely depends on you. In my opinion, you should go via Shopian and return via Kulgam. It will be a day-long trip and you will explore several unseen areas of Kashmir.

If you were short on time, you should stick to the Shopian route only. If you were, however, planning to go to Aharbal in the winter season, you would have to take the road via Kulgam. The Shopian route gets closed after it starts to snow in December.

If you are traveling by public transport, you should choose Shopian Road. The journey will be a lot easier this way and will save you a lot of time.

If you are coming back from Pahalgam, the road via Kulgam will be the shorter route. From Pahalgam, you will drive back to Anantnag and then turn on the road to Kulgam to reach Aharbal.

After spending some time at the waterfall, you can come back to Srinagar via Shopian.
