A thick blanket of snow covered the Sonamarg &#8211; Leh stretch of the national highway, which links the Ladakh region with Kashmir. Along the highway, Minimarag reported 2.5 feet of snow and Sonamarg six inches. Heaviest however was at Zojila top with around 2 &#8211; 3 feet of fresh snow. The heavy snowfall triggered an avalanche at the pass after which traffic came to a standstill. The sudden change in weather left several stationary vehicles covered under thick snow along the road.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10572 size-full\" title=\"srinagar leh road closed\" src=\"http:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed.jpg\" alt=\"srinagar leh road closed\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed-585x439.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/m.timesofindia.com\/india\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed-due-to-heavy-snowfall\/amp_articleshow\/63862981.cms\">TOI<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greaterkashmir.com\/news\/kashmir\/srinagar-leh-highway-closed-for-2nd-consecutive-day\/282805.html\">GreaterKashmir<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Army took essential supplies to Leh by helicopter, while BRO personnel pressed into service to clear the highway.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Srinagar Leh Road Closed<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Officials said that the snowfall which started in Zojila and Sonamarg areas on Thursday evening; continued till Friday night; resulting in heavy accumulation of snow in the area on the highway; forcing suspension of traffic movement on Sonamarag-Drass stretch for second day on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Weather remained dry in the area on Saturday; and BRO is on job to clear the snow from the road to reopen the highway,\u201d said an official<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sudden change in weather has left an effect throughout the region. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/vargiskhan.com\/log\/rohtang-pass-declared-open-2018\/\">Rohtang Pass<\/a><\/strong> too was declared open earlier in April but was shut down for tourists again. BRO was hopeful to clear the Manali Leh stretch by April 20th and Manali Kaza stretch before April ended. Recent spells of snow however has pushed the opening times yet again; and it seems that both of these roads will now open sometime by May end.
