The road connecting Kaza to Manali has been officially declared closed after snowfall at Kunzum Pass. Rohtang Pass however still remains open so the road is open for vehicles till Batal, post which the authorities have declared it unsafe to commute towards Kaza. Kunzum Pass is among one of the passes that starts to receive snow early in the season. The Batal to Kaza stretch is mostly un-tarred road towards to the top of the pass which forces the authorities to stop the traffic movement.
Manali to Kaza
If you are planning a trip to Spiti within this year or early next year, your only available option is to commute from Shimla to Kaza and return via the same route. Even though the locals are still using the Manali Kaza road, it is best advised to not attempt it for safety reasons. If you want to visit Chandrataal or Kunzum Pass, you should plan the trip for mid next year.

Hi Vargis, thanks for updating such a great blog! I notice the Manali-Kaza road closed as late as November last year. Is that unusually late or typical? We’re planning a trip in October that will have us crossing Kunzum from Kaza to Manali around October 12. Would you consider that a big risk?
Hi AS – The entire region experienced very mild snowfall last year due to which the roads closed little late and opened early this year. October can be a little dicy as the road may close at anytime so please do check before you start on your journey.

We are starting on 9th July from chandigarh and will go via shimla to spiti then kunzum pass then towards leh, Is there a way to figure out if kaza to Kunzum Pass to keylong will be open (during 9th July to 13 July)? We just want to bypass manali – rohtang pass and directly connect to manali – leh highway and reach leh.
