Tourist Attractions in Ladakh – A Comprehensive List

tourist attractions in ladakh

What do you see in Ladakh? Everyone knows Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri but what else? Nubra Valley is a famous name but what exactly do you see there? What are some of the places to keep an eye out for while traveling from Manali to Leh or Leh to Srinagar? In this article, I will provide a list of tourist attractions in Ladakh that can be used as a reference guide to ensure that you did not miss anything.

Some of these places are quite famous while others are a little unknown. I am not claiming that this list includes everything that is there to see but it will cover all places that can be termed as must-visit places in Ladakh.

Tourist Attractions in Ladakh

Over the last few years, I have been compiling this list breaking it down by different regions in Ladakh, in different articles. The reason behind doing so was because adding everything on the same page with a brief overview would have resulted in too heavy and lengthy an article.

Keeping the same in mind, on this page I will provide the name of the place and a link to the article where I have written more about it. You can find the names here and if any name sounds unfamiliar, or if you wish to know more about it before you go to Ladakh, you can follow the link and get the details.

Please note that an Inner line permit is required to visit some of the areas listed below. This permit can either be applied for online or procured in person from the DM office in Leh. Please read How to Obtain Inner Line Permit for Ladakh for further details.

I will break this article into different regions; detailing must-see places in different areas of Ladakh as well as the two roads leading to it. How many of these places you can cover entirely depends on the time you have in hand. If you have the trip planned for about 2 weeks, then it is safe to assume that the entire list below can be easily covered.

Hot Water Springs In Ladakh

There are two hot water springs in Ladakh that I know of. One is Chumathang Hot Water Springs and the other one being Panamik hot water springs in Nubra Valley.

Main Tourist Attraction of Ladakh

Ever since the release of the movie “3 Idiots”, I think it is safe to assume that Pangong Tso has definitely come up as the main tourist attraction of Ladakh. The number of tourists that this beautiful lake receives increases with each passing year.

Must Visit Places in Ladakh

Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, and Tso Moriri are probably the three most visited places in Ladakh. As a matter of fact, most of the tourist places in Ladakh are either on the way, around, or in these areas only.

Hello Mr. Khan,
Salam from Bangladesh.
First all thanks a lot for your efforts to make this website so useful.
I wish to make a trip to Ladakh next May’2023. need some information for that. hope you can help me out.
1. I’d like to fly from Dhaka to Srinagar and hire a bike form there. is there any chance to hire bike from Srinagar and return at Manali?
2. is there any good hotels or home stays at Sarchu?
Thanks In advance.

Hello Mr. Nijhum

Salaam from India.

1. It will be hard to find someone in Srinagar who will let you drop the bikes in Manali. Even if you do, it will be at an additional cost of Rs. 10-15 thousand.
2. No. Sarchu is entirely a camping type accommodation area.

Hello Vargis Sir, We are planning self car ride to Leh from Chandigarh and plan to complete circuit (Srinagar-Leh-Manali). Couple of question with latest 2022 june rule
1) Is black plated car allowed in Leh to travel Nubra, Pangong, Turtuk?
2) Is inner permit required? As some of other latest post mentioned currently in 2022 do not require any inner permit for Leh?
3) What is good route to cover — Chandigarh-Srinagar-Leh-Manali-Chandigarh OR Chandigarh-Manali-Leh-Sringar-Chandigarh

Hi Ashwini – If your brother is posted there, he will not need a permit but if he posted elsewhere, he will have to get the permit. It will be needed for you in both the situations though

Hello,
Thank you so much for maintaining this blog. It’s been extremely helpful.
I intend to travel in Leh from 14-18 February and have my flight back on 19th morning.
1) I obtained the PAP for all the regions online but haven’t made the payment since the website states the payment page isn’t secure. Is it possible to pay the fee when i go to the office for verification?
2) I primarily intend to visit Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso. Should I take a bus and spend two days at each place (one day to go and one day to come back) or is there a route that you could suggest for 5 days in which I can see the aforementioned places and a few others along with.
Thank you so much

Reply
Vargis.Khan January 19, 2019 - 5:48 pm

Hello,

1. For PAP, you will have to go through a travel agent so yes can make payment after you get here.
2. If you are traveling by Bus then yes, you will need two days for each destination. A day to get there and next to return to Leh.

Reply
Arjudeb Mukherjee January 20, 2019 - 5:33 am

Hello,
Thank you so much for your reply.
I shall go and take care of the PAP once I’m there.
As for the itinerary, I don’t really have major financial constraint so if need be, I wouldn’t mind going in for any other alternate mode of transportation.
Given that I have 5 days (14-18), is there any particular route that you could recommend so that I could get the most out of my time there?
Thank you so much

Regards

If you are OK with renting a private taxi or a bike then you can go to Nubra from Leh, then head to Pangong via Shyok road straight and then return to Leh on Day 3. You can save a day in there for not having to come back to Leh from Nubra Valley

29-Aug-2018(Wednesday)- Day 5: Nubra via Khardong La Pass. Stay at Nubra
30-Aug-2018(Thursday)- Day 6: Nubra to Pangong Tso Stay at night

Hi Vargis, Really appreciate your selfless efforts and guidance for tourists.

Can you comment on the below itenary that I have planned for my August end trip to Leh:

Day 1. Arrival by flight (Leh) – Leh mkt, palace, shanti stupa, etc
Day 2. Likir, alchi, pathar sahib, sham valley
Day 3 – Leh- Turtuk
Day 4. Turtuk Nubra
Day 5. Nubra Pangong
Day 6 Pangong – Tso
Day 7 Tso Leh
Day 8 Leh – Departure

All routes to be covered by pvt taxi
1. Is the above journey too exhausting considering that I have 50 year old with me?
2. What would be the general weather in ladakh in aug end (esp. Pangong and Tso)

Thanks for your efforts once again

Regards,
Neil

Vargis.Khan July 20, 2018 - 12:43 pm

Hi Neil – This itinerary can actually be changed since you do have some time. Are you planning to spend an entire day at Pangong, Day 6? There is really nothing to do there the entire day. Weather in August will be pleasant. Days will be warm with harsh sun but nights will still be cold.

Reply
Neil Gangar July 20, 2018 - 1:30 pm

hI. THanks! Any modifications which you can suggest? Pangong overnight stay is planned for a) rest between 2 long journeys. b) view of sunset / sunrise.

Reply
Vargis.Khan July 20, 2018 - 1:45 pm

I will recommend adding Tso Moriri but then the journey may become a bit exhausting. Going from Pangong to Tso Moriri on the same day will required about 10-11 hours of travel and then Moriri to Leh is also about 7-8 hours; so actually no, you can leave the itinerary as it is.

Hi Anamika – I am assuming that you are renting a private taxi from Srinagar as well. Because you will have to rent two different cabs here, one for Srinagar to Leh and another for Ladakh sightseeing. Your Srinagar cab will not be allowed in Ladakh. You can travel like this.

29 – Srinagar to Kargil
30 – Kargil to Leh
31 – Leh. Rest, local sightseeing and arrange permits
1 – Leh to Diskit
2 – Diskit to Pangong via Shyok
3 – Pangong to Leh
4 – Leh. Rafting. Book with a local agency in Leh on 1st itself
5 – Fly Out

Thank you so much Vargis for quick response.

Just one more query, can’t we cover Tso mururi as well in the available time span.

Don’t want to miss that heavenly awesome place 🙂

Thanks,
Anamika kashyap

You are welcome Anamika. Moriri will be tough. You will have to pick between Rafting and Moriri, cannot do both.

Anamika kashyap July 1, 2018 - 6:56 pm

Thank you for your kind help.

But if we leave on 28th from Srinagar, then may be we can cover.I can sense, a lot of negotiations we would require here.

If you are landing at 9 then yes, you can go to Kargil the same day. Ask the driver to pick you directly from the airport and bring you to Kargil the same day itself.

If you do this, then yes, you can cover Tso Moriri as well. It will be a very long journey though. Make sure you start from Leh before even the sun came up, as early as possible. Go to Karzok, spend some time at Leh, have lunch there and return to Leh by evening.

I am sorry but I am not really much into trekking so cannot advise on that. I can let you know what all places you can visit by road if that helps.

Andrea May 28, 2018 - 8:36 am

Yes, for sure!! What are the place that i don’t have to miss?
I’m not looking only for the tourist places but for something more “tipical”.
Thank you very much!

Can I take an outside rented vehicle to Hanle and Tso Moriri? Because I’m planning to exit from Hanle without returning to Leh

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 20, 2018 - 7:44 pm

No you cannot. You will have to rent a local bike from Leh itself to go that way. Also, permits for Hanle are not being issued this year so you will not be able to keep it on your itinerary.

Then your biggest concern will be the rented bikes. You cannot use Srinagar rented bikes for sightseeing in Ladakh. You can only use those to reach Leh but will then have to leave them parked at the hotel, rent another bikes from Leh to visit Nubra, Pangong, Moriri. You will then have to come back to leh again, hand over the Leh bikes, collect Srinagar bikes and go to Manali and then Srinagar. Your itinerary will then have to be changed to Leh to Tso Moriri and Tso Moriri to Leh again.

Ramazan Mubarak to you as well brother !!!

Hi Nitesh,

Thank you for your kind words.

1. You mean Leh to Manali – Dharamshala – Sriangar or some other route?
2. You can only use Srinagar rented bikes to reach Leh but cannot for sightseeing in Ladakh. For this purpose, you will have to rent other bikes from Ladakh itself and will have to leave the Srinagar bikes parked at the hotel.

We are starting our journey from Srinagar – leh – manali .
From manali we will be heading back to srinagar via dharmashala. Does it sounds good.
