Top Haunted Places in India and Their Stories

written by Vargis.Khan March 11, 2018

Continuing from the previous article where I talked about 5 top haunted places in India; in this article I will discuss another 5 places that have over a period of time gained notoriety for being one of the scariest and spookiest places in our country. I am neither denying nor agreeing to the claim of any of these places being haunted. The idea of this article is merely to list down the places and the haunting incidents related to them.  Some of these sites have the most interesting tales related to them and are definitely bound to intrigue one’s interest. So without further ado, mentioned below are 5 of the haunted places that will definitely get you thinking twice before you plan to visit here.

On a separate note, I have been to several of these places and with the list, will also provide a link to another article where I have discussed the myth and incidents in complete detail; with my opinion on whether or not the place is haunted.

Dumas Beach, Gujarat

I have discussed 5 most haunted places in first part of this article, link to which I have provided below. In this part, I will talk about the next 5 in the list.

Continuing from the list above;

6. GP Block, Meerut

Do a google search for a list of haunted places and I can bet that one place that will show up in every list is GP Block, Meerut. The usual belief that it is just one house located here but the truth is that it is actually three structures that make up the GP Block and are infamous as haunted. This entire compound is defense land and belongs to the Indian Army. It is in fact a compound with three spacious buildings in which nobody lives.

As per some noted historians, these houses used to be part of British Military establishment in 1930s and it makes sense because even today it is located right in the center of Meerut Cantt area. One look at the building and you can tell that it must have been built ages ago, not because it now stands in ruins but because of the way it’s built. The entire design is an exact replica of houses from early 1900s, the old Haweli style mixed with English Bungalows structure.

People avoid getting anywhere near this house. There are tales of 4 boys often seen sitting inside the house, chatting in candle light and drinking alcohol. There have been sightings reported of a lady in red dress either leaving the house or sitting on the roof.

I once decided to pay this house a visit and reached here at night. If you would like to know what I found here, please read The Haunted House of GP Block, Meerut

7. Malcha Mahal, Delhi

There is a lot of argument around how Malcha Mahal came into existence. One theory is that it was one of the three and the biggest hunting lodge built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in 14th Century. These lodges were fondly knows as “Shikaargaah” and most served as a place to rest for the King and his hunting party. Second and more agreeable theory suggests that it was built by people of Malcha as a community house in 1600 AD.

Go with either of the theory, one thing that is certain in both cases is that this place has seen a glorious past. But all that now is tales of a time long gone. Now it is just an old building in a place that can very well be called a Jungle, right in the heart of Delhi. For a long time, it’s only residents were a prince and princess who lived their lives in completely misery without any of the modern day amenities. Why they chose to live that way is a mystery in itself.

There are several tales about what people may have seen or not see at Malcha Mahal. Sightings of a apparition, a lady dressed in white walking through the surrounding garden; screams and sound of a lady and sometimes a baby crying are a few to mention. Whatever the truth may or may not be; Malcha Mahal is definitely considered among one of the most haunted sites in India.

8. Khooni Darwaza

Khooni Darwaza is an ancient monument in Delhi. Of all the places in India that are believed to be haunted, this one particular site has the goriest history and has seen more deaths than any other. Thousands of people have died here in the long and bloody history of Delhi including both commoners; and people from Royal families as well. The haunting of Khooni Darwaza however is a bit different than others.

This gate is believed to be haunted by the spirits of people who were once killed here. Some people also claim it to be a realm of Jinns but the most popular story is that the ghosts of Mirza Mughal, Mirza Khizr Sultan and Mirza Abu Bekar who were killed by an English Captain haunt this area. As per the folklore, they do not disturb or cause any nuisance to an Indian however watching a foreigner near the gate highly upsets them. There are stories of foreign tourists often getting slapped, pushed and even attacked by an invisible force.

To know more on the deaths at Khooni Darwaza and the ghost stories related in details, please read The Hauntings at Khooni Darwaza.

9. The Ghost of Brijraj Bhavan Palace

This palace was once home to a Major Charles Burton of 40th Bengal Native Infantry. During the rebellion of 1857 Major Burton and both his sons were soon captured by the Indian army; dragged to the central hall and shot dead kneeling down. The haunting related to Brijraj palace are sightings of Major Burton; still roaming around with a cane in his hand and making sure that everything is in order. Guards who were posted here at night talk about how they heard his voice warning them to stay alert. A few guards who nodded off mention getting slapped by an invisible force, waking them right up. Even the former Maharani of Kota once told British Journalists in 1980; that she had seen Major Burton several times, in the same hall where he was killed.

10. The Haunted Dumas Beach of Gujarat

Dumas beach is another site that is considered to be a home to evil powers and highly haunted. As per the locals, people walking around at the beach at night have often complained about hearing strange noises telling them not to go towards the water and turn back. Some people will tell you about having seen a strange white figure rising out of the water. There are rumors that some people were lured into the water by this white apparition.

Most interesting part however is the one related to the dogs. People complain is that all the dogs that live in the vicinity of this beach bark and howl all night. People talk about how their dogs have tried to stop them from continuing further; when they were taking a stroll at the beach late in the evening. And then there are also talks of missing tourists who have walked this stretch of black sand at night have disappeared. Yes, I said black sand. Interesting part about this beach is that the sand here is slightly black in color; which is of course considered to be so due to the supernatural presence. It is said that due to the evil spirits walking here, even the color of the sand has turned black.
