The Terror TV Series Review: The Terror is a British horror drama anthology television series that premiered on AMC on March 25, 2018. The series is named after Dan Simmons’ 2007 best-selling novel; a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition to the Arctic in 1845–1848, which serves as the basis for the series’ first season.
I was totally unaware of the series and found it quite by accident. I was going through the list of movies and series available on Amazon’s Primevideo looking for something interesting to watch. The only reason why this series caught my attention was because of its name, “The Terror”. I like horror and thriller movies a lot so this name was sure to invoke my interest. I read the reviews which sounded a bit interesting; and I decided to give the show a try.
Here is how the story goes. Two Royal Navy’s polar explorer ships sail into uncharted territory, seeking the Northwest Passage through Arctic. There was miscalculation by the ship’s captains; and they ended up sailing into frozen waters. The ships are soon stuck, frozen and isolated; and those aboard must survive the harsh weather conditions and each other; while being stalked by an elusive menace. One of the ships was called HMS Erebus and the other one as HMS Terror. This is where the series gets its name from as The Terror.
The Terror TV Series Review
The story is a fictionalized version of a true story. There were two ships indeed of these names and they sailed into Arctic in 1845. After the ships were frozen and stranded, everyone onboard died in next couple of years, stuck in frozen lands and ice all around. There are of course some added fiction elements like a demonic bear, a mysterious woman, fights among the crew members etc. But as far as I can tell, the story tries its best to stick to the original known facts.
Problem however is that the series doesn’t quite end living up to the expectations. Story sounds very interesting once you hear about it so the expectation anyways is sky high. The initial build up in first couple of episodes is great. But after that, it is just way too slow and not much interesting happens. You start to lose interest quite fast. There were a total of 10 episodes in Season 1 but I got as far as only 6. By the time I was watching episode 7, I just lost interest and gave up.
My biggest complain is only that it is way too slow for a horror or thriller series. They could have used the Bear factor a little better but you don’t even get to see the damn animal completely until episode 5. Since there were anyways fictional elements in it; there could have been a little more of maybe hunts; fight scenes or something to make it a bit more interesting. Thing is that when someone starts watching a show called “Terror”; they want something that can terrify them. Not just a lot of snow and lot of talking. But sadly, for most of it, you just see men stuck with ice all around, discussing their survival and dying one by one.
My final verdict would be that you could try watching it any maybe you will like it. As for me, this series could have been better but was way too slow for my taste. Give it a shot, watch a couple of episodes and maybe it will grow on you.
