Srinagar to Leh Highway Declared Open Again

Srinagar to Leh Highway Declared Open Again: After remaining closed for several days, the road from Srinagar to Leh and across Zojila was declared open for vehicular movement.

‘We have resumed traffic on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway,’ a traffic police official said.
He said traffic was suspended on the highway following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions; particularly between Sonamarg, Zojila, Zero point, Meenmarg and Drass.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO); responsible for the maintenance of the highway; pressed into service sophisticated machines and cleared the snow; he said adding traffic will be allowed from both sides on the highway with some restrictions.

Traffic will be allowed from Drass for Sonmarg in Kashmir from 0500 hrs, he said; adding that Ladakh-bound traffic will be allowed from 1100 hrs.

Meanwhile, the Mughal road; connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region; was through for only one-way for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs). Traffic will ply from Bufliaz to Srinagar today and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction. The road is still very narrow at several places and vehicles had to pass through huge snow walls.

The national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was also through for traffic, the official said. However, LMVs will ply from both Srinagar and Jammu, while heavy vehicles will continue to ply one-way only. HMVs will ply from Jammu to Srinagar only and no heavy vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
He said people are requested to undertake the journey on the highway only after confirming the status of the road from Traffic Control Units (TCUs) set up in Srinagar, Ramban and Jammu.

Srinagar to Leh Highway Declared Open Again

The road was declared open in last week of March but was then closed again after it started to snow at Zojila top. About 3 to 4 feet of fresh snow was received at top of the pass; which has now been cleared. The condition of the road however still remains bad, specially between Sonamarg and Drass.

Jispa to Leh is easily doable Vishwa Bhai. Just get an early start from Jispa, possible by 5 to 6 AM.

I am planning a road trip to Ladakah via Srinagar. First night stop over will be at Udhampur and from there next day to Kargil.
Is it OK to cover Udhampur to Kargil in one day. Is it do-able? What is your view on this.

No it will be a bit too long. If there was no traffic involved, no stoppage, no road blocks etc, even then it will easily take you about 14-15 hours from Udhampur to Kargil.

Thanks Vargis.

In this case we will stay at Sonamarg. My next question is similar.

We are planning to return via Manali Highway and want to cover up Leh to Jispa in One day. What is your view on this?

Yes Jispa to Leh is doable in a day. Even the HRTC Bus does Keylong to Leh in one day. Just make sure that you are up and traveling by 5 AM so that you have plenty of time for breaks and can make it to Leh before dark.
