Srinagar Leh Highway Reopened for 2018

by Vargis.Khan

Marking the beginning off tourist season in Ladakh, Srinagar Leh highway reopened for civilian traffic on Monday after light motor vehicles were allowed to cross Zojila. An Ambulance earlier crossed over the pass on Sunday safely post which other vehicles too were allowed. An official announcement however has not yet been made by BRO. The Kargil to Padum road was declared open earlier on 24th March and with traffic now crossing Zojila over, pretty much the entire area now is open for traffic movement.

Below is a short video of the traffic movement across Zojila.

However, I will strongly advise that you give it at least 10-14 days more; before you plan your journey on this route. The road in initial few days of opening is very unstable; and work goes on at several places to restore it. Due to this, there could be a temporary closure; in which case you will get stuck or even stranded on the road. Add to it the fact that BRO has not yet officially declared the road open; so they may stop the traffic movement anytime as of now.

During the initial few days,  the condition of the road too is at its worst. Specially the stretch across Zojila will be a nightmare to cross with slush all around.

Timings of regulated traffic at Zojila however are not yet declared. As soon as I know of the timings of traffic between Sonamarg and Drass, I will update the information at Srinagar Leh Highway Status 2018 post.
