Spiti Valley Road Status 2024 – 2025

by Vargis.Khan

The present Spiti Valley road status is open from the Shimla side but closed from the Manali side. You can plan a trip to Spiti but will have to go via Shimla and come back the same way. You cannot travel to Spiti covering the entire Circuit until May 2024. The road to Chandratal is also closed. All other internal roads within Spiti are open though.

If you have any questions, you can contact me on Instagram to chat with me or subscribe to my YouTube channel and ask a question there to get the latest status of the road at the time of your travel.

To organize your trip to Spiti Valley, book a taxi, rent a bike, or get the best hotel rates, you can contact Kunal @ 9910402252. From luxurious hotels to budget stays, he can help get you the best rates possible.

To get more information like itinerary planning, places to visit, and budget planning, take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Spiti Valley – A Complete Travel Guide.

Spiti Valley Current Road Status

Route Status
Shimla to Kaza Open
Manali to Kaza Closed
Rohtang Pass Closed
Manali to Keylong Open via Atal Tunnel
Kunzum Pass Closed
Keylong to Kaza Closed
Chandratal Road Closed
Chitkul Road Closed

Kunzum Pass and Rohtang are both on the Manali Kaza route. Both these passes are known to receive a heavy amount of snow each year. Due to this, the entire Manali – Spiti Valley stretch remains buried under snow in the winter season. Chandratal is also located on this stretch and is closed from late October to early June.

From Shimla’s side, only the road from Karchham to Chitkul via Sangla Valley remains closed until March. The rest of the route remains open throughout the year.

How to Plan for Your Trip to Spiti?

If you are planning a trip on the Spiti circuit anytime soon in the near future, then continue checking this blog post or the Forum Thread for recent updates. Meanwhile, take a look at the articles below that I am sure will be of help in planning your trip to Spiti Valley.

The list above is a few that I believe are must-knows for anyone heading toward Spiti.

Spiti Valley Road Status 2020

Shimla to Spiti Valley Road Status

Contrary to common belief, the road from Shimla to Spiti Valley actually remains open throughout the year. There could be temporary closure in the winter season if it snowed heavily anywhere on the route, especially near Nako. But the authorities clear the snow just as soon as they can restore the connectivity.

So starting from Shimla, you can visit Spiti Valley at any time of the year. The only catch is that between November to May, you will have to keep Chandratal and the entire Manali Kaza stretch off your itinerary.

Chitkul Road Status

The road to Chitkul bifurcates from Spiti Valley highway near Karcham and passes through the beautiful Sangla Valley. This entire stretch also receives quite a bit of snow each year due to which, it gets cut off from the main highway between November to March.

There have been instances when tourists got stuck in Chitkul and Sangla Valley for several days and had to be airlifted out (there have been casualties as well). So if you want to include Chitkul in your itinerary, I will suggest planning a trip after April only.

Manali to Spiti Valley Road Status

As a tourist, consider the road from Manali to Kaza as closed for this year. I would strongly advise against risking a journey on this stretch now. Blizzards and sudden heavy snowfall in this area are way too common.

Do not forget that you will also be crossing two high-altitude passes to get out and if that does not happen, you will be stuck for good. There have been instances when tourists were caught in blizzards at places like Batal and Chhota Dhara and had to be airlifted out. And yes, there have been casualties as well so do not take the risk.

Kunzum Pass Road Status

The status of Kunzum Pass as of today is closed. The estimated date of the opening of the road will be late May to early June in the year 2024.

Chandratal Lake Status

The road to Chandratal from both the Manali and Kaza sides is closed as of now. It will open around May 10th from the Kaza side and after 20th from the Manali side. The campsites at the lake however will not be operational until June 10th.

VARGIS SIR YOU ARE GREAT
Hi everyone I am 62 year oldie but avid traveller of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. I always take his opinions and bother him as we all do always. He relentlessly answers us, whatever silly questions questions and queries we ask. But no-one knows how much efforts and time he puts in, how much risks he takes. Recently I am the witness to his dedication and risks he takes and time he puts in.
Here is the narration.
I asked him regarding my Spiti valley and Chitkul tour on 24 February 24. His answer “wait I will tell you, I am going , will let you once I come back” . No communication from him after that , I tried his Instagram many times but there was no answer. I was to start on 9th of March, newspaper had only one news about the sad incidence at Nigulsari near kharcham, no specific inputs on road condition. I was in dilemma but decided to take a chance as my hired driver told me that road is clear till Kalpa.
Then suddenly got a message on Instagram from this great person. ” SIR CANCEL THE TOUR ITS REALLY BAD HERE.” He narrated further. He was stuck up near Sarahan in bad weather conditions and extremely difficult situation for FOUR DAYS. The incidence of sad nigulsari happened in front of him.
Further more he apprised me of really bad conditions at Kaza, no lights, no supply, heavy snow fall and everything .
I cancelled my tour. But the last message from THIS GREAT Personality ” sir I would have told you further but because of lack of time I had to come back” . Sir you are person who can’t be described in words. You are not only dedicated but also compassion and kindly help is your virtue. I salute you sir.
My daughter ask me to convey her sincere thanks to you.

Hi! I just returned from Chandratal yesterday. The weather is quite unpredictable right now and it has been raining for 2-3 days in the Chandratal-Batal-Gramphu Section.

Chandratal Road condition was okish yesterday but it has rained last night as well. Please check with locals or checkposts before attempting to go. Hatchback and Sedans not recommended at all.

As for Batal-Gramphu section, the road got blocked yesterday 17 kms before Gramphu due to a large rock that came onto the track blocking the passage. 3-4 travellers have been stuck over there for entire night.
Please check before attempting.

Again, only 4X4 vehicles or RWD vehicles recommended in current road condition which is really bad.

Please be careful while moving on this road for next couple of days.

Regards

Same concern, we are planning around mid July and I am not sure how rains are gonna affect. I know it’s unpredictable but is this even a good time to plan around? If I plan to return via manali are the roads open or close during Monsoon?

Reply
Vargis.Khan June 22, 2023 - 7:55 am

The roads are open. It is a good time to go but keep a watch on the weather. At worst, there could be landslides. At best, you will get wet in the rain a little bit and the water in the crossings will be higher
