A Few Glimpses of Winter In Spiti Valley

by Vargis.Khan

These are a few pictures of Winter in Spiti Valley, taken in January 2017. The trip happened in second week of January, while there was snow all around. As expected, the entire valley was covered under a thick sheet of snow making it look even magnificent.

These first few shots were taken in Shimla.

The winter of 2017 saw a lot of snow all around the Himalayan region and Shimla was no exception.

Roads were completely buried under the snow through out the town. I specifically like the picture below showing how fierce the snowfall really was.

The picture below is one of my personal favorite. This was taken at the hotel and I absolutely loved the way snow had settled over these benches. See how neat it looks. Kind of hard to imagine that it just happened on its own.

Loved the contrast these red flower pots presented in white all around.

This one was taken somewhere on the way, capturing the majestic white Himalayan peaks.

The following few pictures are of the small village of Nako.

As I mentioned, this trip happened in the month of January but if you too want to plan a visit to Spiti, I would suggest that do it either in Feb or March. January sees a lot of heavy snowfall throughout the region and chances of getting stranded or getting stuck at one of the villages are high in case the road closes. Accommodation too in Spiti in winters is severely limited so you must also make your stay arrangements in advance. The water is completely frozen all around, even in taps so there is no running water anywhere. Another thing that you must keep in mind is that a winter trip to Spiti is one sided, meaning that you will travel from Shimla until Kaza and will have to return the same way. Both Kunzum Pass and Rohtang La remain close at this time so there is absolutely no way that you can complete the circuit and exit from Manali.

If you too are planning a winter trip to Spiti valley and have any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below and I would be glad to answer.

You can do it as long as you are confident that you can handle a motorcycle in extreme cold and snow. No immediate help available in case of a breakdown.
