Sony XS-FB102E Review – Decent Quality for the Price

by Vargis.Khan

I have been using Sony XS-FB102E speakers in one of my cars; Mahindra Thar to be precise; and after a while of use, below is a short review of how I found these speakers to be. My overall experience to put in a nutshell was just about OK; but then considering the fact that these are really small 4 inches speakers, not much could be expected anyways.  I was pairing these speakers with a Sony head unit and the overall sound quality was decent enough for an average listener. It was nothing out of the world with great bass or anything; but you do not really buy 4 inches speakers with that in mind. If you need a total wow experience with a car shaking base then you will definitely have to go for better speakers and as subwoofer. More details in the Sony XS-FB102E Review below.

Mahindra Thar is an open SUV when you use it with a soft top; which also means that getting in the vehicle is a child’s play. You just need to open the zip at the back of the vehicle and you are ready to steal whatever is inside. This puts installing an expensive music system out of question and that was the primary reason why I chose these speakers. I just needed some music playing on the go but still could not take the risk of investing too much money. So I bought an old Sony stereo at a cheap price and paired it with these speakers; total expense came out to be just over Rs. 2000. All this with the thought that even if someone steals the stereo and the speakers, it will not hurt me too much.

Performance

Final result was not at all disappointing. I got what I needed; some music playing at the background; amidst all the traffic noises and the annoying flapping sound that Thar’s canopy makes. There was of course no Bass or Base as such but I was not looking for that anyways. I was however definitely surprised by the overall sound quality. At a normal volume, these small speakers are capable of producing some decent quality music. The mounting depth of the speakers is among the shallowest which makes them easy to install in any car. I had these mounted on the front doors and it worked quite easily.

Disadvantages

On the cons side, the high power handling of the speakers is at 210 Watts which is decent enough for a speaker this size; but the continuous power handling is at 30 watts which is a bit too low. If you are someone who listens to music always at the highest volume on regular basis, this can cause the sound to distort and eventually cause damage to the speaker in log run. For that experience, you will have to go for bigger and better speakers and buying Sony XS-FB102E 4 inch speakers won’t do.

Final verdict is that Sony XS-FB102E are good car speakers at an affordable price. The sound quality is good enough for an average listener and these speakers will serve you well as long as you don’t push them too hard, too often.

Price

I bought these speakers from a local dealer; reason being was the package deal I got; including the old used stereo and speakers for about Rs. 2000. Price that I paid at the local dealer for speakers however was a couple hundred more than what I could have gotten online. If you want to go for these speakers, then definitely do take a look at the prices online as well before you finalize.
