Winter as it would seem is going to arrive early this year and hopefully with plenty of snow. There was snowfall at Khardung La earlier this month, in the very first week itself; and now it has been snowing all across. Pretty much all the passes in Himachal, Ladakh and Spiti valleys have witnessed snowfall and quite a bit of it. I am putting up this short post as a word of precaution for anyone planning a trip in next few days. There has been snowfall at Rohtang and Kunzum Pass over the weekend.
Snowfall at Rohtang Pass, Chandratal, Kunzum Pass and Baralacha La
Rohtang Pass received more than 4 inches of snow in last couple of days. The unexpected turn in the weather lead to a sudden closure of the pass for vehicular traffic; leading to about 20 people getting stuck up there. These people were rescued later and as of now, authorities have issued warning for people traveling around in the region. The pass is expected to remain closed for next 48 to 72 hours until weather clears. Tourists and locals bound for the Rohtang Pass were not allowed to go beyond Marhi due to continuous snowfall that has resulted in snapping of road links leading to the pass. Officials said state transport buses between Manali and Kaza have been temporarily suspended.
Similarly, Kunzum Pass and Baralacha La too have received quite a bit of snow in last couple of days and stand closed as of now. Chandratal too received its first snowfall already and people at the camp sites had to travel back to Kaza.
Manali Leh Highway
Almost every pass on the Manali Leh road received snowfall and the entire stretch is off limits for civilians right now. There is no confirmed word on reopening but you can expect it to remain close for next 48 to 72 hours at least. Word of caution right now is that if you had any immediate plans to travel on this road, you are better of giving those up for at least a week. Even after then, there is no telling when it could snow again suddenly resulting in a closure again. Plying from Manali to Leh right now is not the safest of decisions.
Srinagar Leh Highway
Like other passes, Zoji La too received snowfall in last couple of days. The pass is expected to reopen in next 48 to 72 hours depending that the weather clears but as of now, people are stuck on both sides of it until traffic is allowed to cross over.
It has been raining in Leh as well and Khardung La is closed. There were some tourists stuck in Nubra valley on Sunday. People were not allowed to travel from Leh to Nubra or vice versa.
I hope the information above was of help. If you have any latest information on the weather in any of these areas; please do share either in the comments section below; or at our Community Forum. If you were planning to travel to Ladakh or Spiti; or even anywhere up in the hills for that matter; better to sit and wait for the weather to clear.
