Seagate Expansion Desktop 2TB External Hard Drive Review

by Vargis.Khan

I recently purchased a Seagate Expansion Desktop 2TB External Hard Drive and this is a short review of how I found the product. Seagate is a very well known data storage company and together with Western Digital, they pretty much dominate the HDD market. My main purpose of buying the hard disk was just to store movies and music so I wasn’t really looking for a top-notch hard drive that offers additional feature. All I wanted was a simple hard disk that I can use as a backup drive for my computer and I must say that I was quite satisfied with the product.

The hard drive is quite easy to install as it does not require additional software or configuration. This Hard drive gives you 1.8 TB of usable space and does not require any formatting as well so is pretty much ready to us as soon as you plug it in with your computer. It is compatible with both USB 3 and USB 2 ports. Drag and drop I believe is quite basic but I would still mention that it works with this drive too. On the outer side, the built looks solid. I have dropped the drive a couple of times on the floor by mistake but there was no damage on the body and the data inside was intact too. It comes with a 3 year warranty which in my opinion is pretty satisfactory considering that some of the big names like Seagate only offer a 1 year warranty.

On the drawback side, the biggest one would be that it only works with Windows and no other operating system. It is compatible with most of the Windows versions but would not work on other operating systems. Another drawback would be that it requires an external power source. It doesn’t work with the USB power so you will have to find a power point to plug the adapter into. It is quite bulky too and not easy to carry around for daily requirement. The speed too is a bit slow when you are trying to move data from one external drive to other one. There is a little bit of heating due to external power I believe but not really that much that it would concern you.

Despite these downsides, I would still say that it is a good option if you just need a simple hard drive to sit at home for backup purpose. Price range is at par with other hard disks in the market so no complaint on that side as well. I would definitely recommend this product.
