Sach Pass Status 2019 & Road Condition

by Vargis.Khan

Sach Pass has been declared closed for all type of vehicles for this season. Like previous years, this will remain to be a dedicated post for Sach Pass Status 2019; and condition of the road across the pass. For more recent news on the road and a visual update, please continue to follow and check the Forum Thread.

Sach Pass Status 2019 – OPEN

Update: June 30th

Sach Pass is has officially been declared open for civilian traffic. With that being said, it cannot be deemed as safe to travel on for at least next 2 to 3 weeks. The road condition is extremely bad and there is still a lot of snow around the top. Snow walls on both side of the road have made it wide enough for only one car to pass so if you ran into another vehicle coming from opposite direction, it will become impossible to cross. One of the cars would have to reverse drive until you find a spot wide enough. The Satrundi check post has now been moved back to Bairagarh. Make sure you are carrying your Driver’s License along because without it, you will not be allowed to cross the check post.

Update- June 17th

Snow clearing operation at Sach pass is in progress but recent snowfall last week brought the work to a complete standstill. There is a huge amount of snow at Rohtang and it is not expected to open before June end as of now.

Update- May 26th

Snow clearing operation continues but due to heavy snow at the top, Sach Pass will definitely not open before June 20th.

If you are planning on visiting Sach Pass next year, then I will recommend taking a look at the following posts for information on how you can best plan your trip.

Historically, Sach Pass is usually the last pass to be declared open sometime in the month of June. It is also the first one to receive snow and get closed by late September or early October.

Update- May 18th

Opening of Rohtang Pass continues to get delayed this year due to heavy snow and resulting landslides. It is still raining and snowing at the pass. Earlier this month, the road was opened until Marhi but a landslide now has blocked that road too. There were 2000 tourists stranded on the road yesterday after a landslide blocked their way back to Manali. For now, assume that Rohtang Pass will probably open only either towards the end of May or early June. Sach Pass will not open at least until June 20th. Even if BRO is able to clear the snow, this landslide will raise questions on the stability of the road. Authorities will not open it unless they are completely sure of its safety. For now, the road is completely blocked.

Update- April 28th

Huge amount of snow at top of the pass is causing delay in opening of Rohtang Pass. As of now, estimate is that Rohtang will not open at least until May 10th, which means that Sach Pass may now open well until June 10th or 15th.

Sach Pass Status 2019 – Update April 21st

Sach Pass and Rohtang Pass both received fresh snow last week bringing the snow clearing operation to a standstill. The work has now been resumed and Rohtang is expected to open in next couple of weeks. Sach Pass will not get open until June 1st week at earliest.

Sach Pass Status 2019 – Update April 7th

As per the latest update, Rohtang Pass is expected to open by May 1st week. Snow clearing work is in progress but huge amounts of snow are causing the work to move slow. This means that opening of Sach Pass too can get delayed this year and will possibly not be before June 10th

Sach Pass Status 2019 – Update March 17th

Road clearing work that started last week came to a complete standstill due to heavy snowfall and rain in several parts of Himachal Pradesh. The valleys of Lahaul, Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Pangi all received a fresh spell of snow. Rain dropped the temperature drastically in lower areas of Mandi, Bilaspur, and Solan. Rohtang Pass received about 30 centimeters of fresh snow. It snowed even in Manali for about 3 cm. There is about 15ft of Snow at the passes of Rohtang, Baralacha La, Sach, and Kunzum. There is no word right now on by when BRO will be able to resume snow clearing operation.

Please see the Forum Thread for latest updates and pictures of the route.

Sach Pass Status 2019 – Update March 10th

BRO is going to start snow clearance operation in a day or two from Satingri toward Tandi and Sissu. Similarly, BRO workforce and machinery is moving from Udaipur ahead toward Kolang. From Manali side, work to clear snow on Gulaba Rohtang stretch will commence in a week to 10 days. There are still warnings of snowfall in coming days which may cause the work to get delayed all across.

Sach Pass Status 2019 – Update February 18th

Heavy snowfall has occurred all across Himalayas in last couple weeks. Avalanches at several places have been reported, triggered due to widespread snowfall. The valleys of Lahaul and Spiti have been affected badly. So far two motorable bridges, four dhabas, a Mahila Mandal building, a liquor shop and some machinery have been damaged in Spiti. The Tandi petrol pump in Lahaul Valley was hit by an avalanche and destroyed.

Bairagarh right now is buried deep under snow, as shown in the pictures I posted below. For now, the expected date of opening of the pass will remain to be around mid of June.

Sach Pass Status 2019 – Update February 11th

The recent spell of snow all across Himalayas has seen a lot of snow getting accumulated in the hills. The snow this year in fact is far greater than the last few. More snow is expected throughout the month of February. For now, do not plan to visit Sach Pass any sooner than the month of June.

Sach Pass Status 2019 – Update February 4th

The way the weather is trending this year, expect a delay in opening of the pass. The road usually gets declared open by late May or early June. But considering the heavy amount of snowfall this winter, the opening may get delayed and pushed to early or Mid June. For now, do not plan to travel any earlier than June 2019.

Sharing a recent picture of the road near Bairagarh.

Sach Pass Status 2019: Update November 4th

Sharing a recent picture of the road near Sach after the pass experienced a heavy snowfall in October.

After the surprising snowfall across Spiti and Pangi Valley in September this year, Sach Pass was closed for a few days due to heavy amount of snow at the top. It was opened a few days later but all the snow and resulting slush was making it too risky to get across. As a result, it was again declared closed for the season. The check post at Satrundi was moved back to Bairagarh and that is as far as you can currently go.

Similarly, the road from Tandi to Kishtwar via Killar is closed as well. As of now, Sinthan top is open and you can travel to Kishtwar but cannot cross Sach to get to Killar and Tandi. As of now, planning a trip to Sach Pass is only open next year after June.

Hi – Road conditions are Sach Pass are always bad so expect a kind of road like between Kaza and Manali. No need of snow chains in October first week but do not delay any further coz it starts to snow at Sach in early October.

According to TimesofIndia news it seems Sach Pass has finally opened, though it says only to small vehicles. I was planning to travel on old 2×2 Ford Endeavour . Could you please let me know if the road is ok for the SUV? Also is the Killar Kishtwar highway good enough to travel during mid July?

Reply
Vargis.Khan June 30, 2019 - 4:12 pm

Friend of mine did it in a Bolero a few days ago so it is doable. But the road is barely wide enough for 1 car at several places and you will have some difficulty maneuvering an Endeavour.

It is highly doubtful that Sach Pass will open any sooner than early June this year. The recent spell of snow all across Himalayas and rains near the foothill have seen a lot of snow getting accumulated at the pass and on the route. More snow is expected in coming week and throughout the month of Feb. For now, do not plan Sach Pass before June.
