Sach Pass Status 2017 & Road Condition

by Vargis.Khan

Sach Pass is currently open for vehicular traffic. This will be a dedicated post for Sach Pass Status 2017.  As the year progresses, I will continue updating the status and condition of the road here.

Current Sach Pass Status 2017 – OPEN

Update July 3rd: Thank you Saket Bhai for sharing the update on road conditions. He recently completed his Sach Pass trip in XUV 500 and ISuzu V Max. His update also confirms that you can complete Sach Pass tip in a Swift, Verna or Ertiga or for any Sedan or Hatchback for that matter.

I returned today to Delhi after my trip … A short summary about road conditions . ( we were driving in Safari storm, XUV 500 & ISUZU V Max )
1) Bairagarh to Sach pass – very bad but still better than sach pass to Killar .
2) Sach pass to Killar – Worst roads across the trip .
3) Killar to Khoksar – Roads are much better ( still not in good category ) but be ware of the Nallas , we were stuck for a day because we were trying to cross in 2 nd half ( about 2 pm ) it is recommended to cross them as early as possible .
The above 3 were worst roads of entire trips but still we saw a verna , swift and ertiga successfully cross them .
4) Khoksar to Chandar taal. – The roads were again closed for a day due to a nalla overflowing …. this stretch also had few very challenging parts although less than sach pass to Killar but since we were going up hill it was equally difficult .
4) Batal to Chandar taal – the road is fine but very very narrow .
5) Chandar tall to kaza – After experience of first 4 days this road looked WoW 🙂 .
6) Kaza to Karcham – The road has been built recently and now it is a very nice road . I was in Kaza in Jan 2016 as well , compared to that the roads now are much much better . For a Spiti trip now there is no need to for a high road clearance car any car can do it .
We drove 2000 Kms in 9 days , camped for 2 nights . We had 3 kids in age 3 years to 8 years and they had no problems with high altitude at any point in the trip .
The trip was an experience of life time , I will share few picks once arrange the digital content i gathered from the trip .
Thanks to Vargis for all the useful information and to others also who shared information about road conditions .

Update June 30th: It is still raining almost everyday around Sach Pass and the road is in a terrible state. It has already been closed for repairs couple of times since it opened.  The worst stretch is between Sach Top, Killar and Udaipur. On Kishtwar side, it is bad but doable until Sinthan Top. From Sinthan, it is a smooth run until Patnitop and Anantnag.

Update June 26th: Below is an update on road conditions through out the Sach Pass stretch. It is still raining there almost every other day so you must prepare accordingly. The Bogotu Dhaba is now operational so you can have lunch there. From Bairagarh to Sach Top, it will take you about 3-4 hours. Sach Pass to Killar will be about 5-6 hours easily.

Before and around Bairagarh: Road is a mix of bad and average. Expect some slush and there are a few waterfalls on the road as you get closer to Bairagarh.

Bairagarh to Satrundi: This section is bad but manageable. Few waterfalls in between here too.

Satrundi to Sach Top: Road is a completely dirt trail but OK for the initial part. Snow walls will start to come up as you get closer to Sach Top, and at some places really narrowing the road. Ride carefully as you may come across black ice at several places here. There are a few serious water crossing as well before you reach the top of the peak. If you are in a car, you will have to keep an eye out for any oncoming vehicle. Due to the huge snow walls, road is barely wide enough for one car at several places. The narrow road and water crossings too will make it difficult if there is another vehicle coming from the other direction.

Sach Pass to Bogotu: Extremely bad. A steep descent on an uneven road full of big stones lying right on the road. Be very careful if you are on a motorcycle.

Bogotu Nallah: A menace as usual specially for motorcyclists. Try to cross it in earlier part of the day if you were staying at Bairagarh. By noon, water flow increases and nallah gets quite deep. If you are in a 4X4, a good place to engage it before driving across. If on a motorcycle; stop, inspect and than take your bike across.

Bogotu to Killar: Extremely bad road still. They cut a tunnel through a glacier on this stretch, before Chandrabhaga Bridge and as the sun comes it, it starts to melt creating water and slush everywhere. The snow tunnel may just collapse any day now. There are several water crossing on this stretch and a couple of them are really deep and tough to cross.

Killar to Cherry: Mix of average and bad but manageable.

Cherry to Tindi: A few bad water crossings on this route. BRO is working around Shor Nallah and blasting the road due to which the entire road is filled with stones.

Tindi to Udaipur: This will probably be the worst section of the entire journey so far. There are a lot of water crossings in between. Several of them are quite deep and Darad Nallah is the longest. If you are on a motorcycle, there is no way you can cross it without putting your feet down (as it runs for quite a distance on the road) in the water so prepare accordingly.

Udaipur to Manali: Road is mix of average and good but mostly good. Stretch between Tandi and Sissu is newly built. Expected a lot of traffic and crowd as you start descending from Rohtang Pass towards Manali. Road however is Ok here as well.

Update June 23rd: Thank you Sufis for another update today. Snow has been cleared and road is now open. It is raining there however and roads too are in a terrible state.

Update June 22nd: Thank you Sufis for providing this update. Copy pasting it here from comments section.

“As of today, 22nd June 2017, Sach Pass is closed. It snowed and rained heavily on 21st June. Level of the snow is 2 feet. 3 of my biker friends are stranded just before pass. Administration is saying that it will take minimum 3-4 days to clear it again.”

Update June 15th: Just received word that Chanshal Pass experienced light snow fall in last few days. It has been raining almost everyday there. Expect the weather to be really cold and be prepared for rain. The route between Killar and Keylong is drivable however a section of the road at Shaor Nallah near Purthi is badly damaged. The road on Kishtwar however remains to be closed as an entire section was washed away in rain. BRO is working on reconstructing it but the everyday rain is badly hampering the work.

Update June 13th: Sach Pass is now cleared of snow and was opened for vehicular traffic today. Vehicles from both Chamba and Pangi valley successfully crossed the pass to get to the other side.

Please do keep in mind that today, only SUVs with high ground clearance were able to cross. Bus, Trucks were not allowed to ply on the route and the road is way too treacherous right now for a hatchback or Sedan. If you are planning a trip to Sach Pass in near future, below are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Road condition is extremely bad. Road is badly broken with lot of slush and numerous water streams.

  • Road from Bairagarh to Udaipur via Killar and until Kishtwar is all bad.
  • There are a few nallahs on the way which are in full flow as of now due to melting snow.
  • Best would be to delay your trips by a couple of weeks as authorities are still working clearing the snow. There are still machines at the top of the pass and road may be closed temporarily.
  • Opt only for an SUV with high ground clearance for the trip. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a 4×4 but good GC is must.
  • Do not even think about taking a hatchback or Sedan. It may just kill your car completely.
  • If you have a hatchback or Sedan, best would be to plan your trip sometime in September.
  • If you must however take a hatchback or Sedan now, then take it only until Bairagarh. From there, you can hire a local Bolero to take you to the top of the pass and bring back. Leave your own car at the hotel in Bairagarh. If you need a contact at Bairagarh to rent a local taxi from, let me know.

Bus service across the pass has not yet started and it will be a few weeks before it happens.

Update June 9th: As of now, Pass should open by either June 12th or 13th. If you are planning a trip after that, you are OK to go however be prepared for nightmarish roads.

Update June 4th: Snow clearing operation has almost reach Sach Pass top. Only last few kilometers now remain on both Killar and Satrundi side. If you travel now, you can go about 10 kilometers after Satrundi, as far as the snow has been cleared. From Manali Side, you can climb up as far as about 3 kilometers from Sach Pass top.

Expected opening date as of now is sometime after June 15th.

Update April 22nd: From Manali Side, Snow has been cleared all the way to Rohtang top. Another 2 kilometers of stretch from Keylong to Rohtang still remains that BRO is hopeful to be cleared within next few days. However, traffic will not be allowed to ply on this route for at least next couple of weeks. Once BRO is able to stabilize the road conditions and determines the entire Manali to Keylong via Rohtang route safe, it will be declared open for tourists.

From Chamba side, road is accessible till Bairagarh. The check post at Satrundi moves to Bairagarh each year during winter and this is as far as you can go as of now.

With temperatures soaring high all over the country, Shimla and Manali too were not an exception. Shimla recorded the highest temperature of 28 degrees Celsius since 1999 and Manali at 27 degrees. As a result of the heat, snow is melting faster than expected, expediting BRO’s snow clearing operation.

Sach Pass is notorious and often deemed as the toughest of all. Road conditions are always bad and with high snowfall in the region during winter and snow melting this fast now in summer, expect the roads to be in the worst state. Once the pass is open, I will update on the current conditions of the road.

I hope this information on Sach Pass Status 2017 was helpful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below and I would be glad to answer.

I am planning to go to Dalhousie from Kaza in Early May 2018. Will the Udaipur Killar Sachpass route be open and safe by then?
Also since the trip cannot be completed in one day which is the best place to stay overnight?

No, both Sach Pass and Manali Kaza route will only open by early June. From Dalhousie, you can reach Bairagarh on Day 2 and cross Sach Pass the next day.

Both Sach and Kunzum open sometime by early to mid June, not before that. You will have to postpone your trip by at least a month Nirav.

Hello Rohit – This is not a good time. Sach Pass would have closed so you cannot go that way. Kunzum Pass will be closed as well so you cannot do Spiti in form of a circuit. You can do Shimla – Kaza – Shimla only.

And how did your XUV perform at Sach Pass and in Spiti? Any problems or tips with XUV or I Suzu?

saket kumar July 5, 2017 - 8:59 am

And how did your XUV perform at Sach Pass and in Spiti? Any problems or tips with XUV or I Suzu? —–

All the three SUV managed well and we did not have any major issue with any of them , we drove a total of 2000 kms in 9 days . My Brief assessment for the three ( Isuzu V Max, Safari storm , XUV Automatic ) is as under.

Isuzu did not face any issue across the trip , all the bad rods were quite easy for it , even the worst nallas were not an issue for the pick up truck . I never used 4H or 4 L apart for once when I went off-roading at river bed near Kaza. The only trouble with the SUV was its size and turning radius. My car ( Rented ) was having an upsize tire which further increased the width by few inch ( 4 – 6 ). Making hair-pin quite difficult. I had to reverse the SUV at some of the sharp hairpin bends specially on the 14 km stretch to chandar taal, and it was really a difficult thing to do . Rear visibility of the car is not so good so making a U turn on mountains was little tricky. High wheel articulation and clearance helped me to force the pick up truck to climb the side slopes at times when I had to give way to cars from other side specially on chandar taal road. Overall this is a perfect vehicle for such kind of trip . Millage I got for the entire trip was 9.2km/ltr .

Sarafi also managed well and did not face any major trouble, but its high weight was evident while going up hill and crossing nallas . Both XUV and safari were not able to cross one of the nalla ( midway between Killar & Udaipur ) and we had to halt for a day and cross it next day early morning .
While going up hill to sach pass Safari got heated ( clutch plate ) but that was more because of driving style . The person driving safari was relatively new to such kind of hill driving and he was using clutch excessively. Under body protection of safari was good and helped a lot of places where its clearance was falling short .
Finally for XUV automatic , it exceeded my expectations, being automatic I was expecting it to be rather difficult while tackling tough ascent and descent but my friend ( Anurag ) did good use of manual mode and XUV managed all the rough terrain quite well . Under body guard for XUV is of Fiber and it could not handle all the beating. On way to sach pass it got the first hit and was damaged , after that we had to tie it with ropes at least twice in a day to keep it hanging , finally while crossing one of other dangerous nalla ( kaoksar to Chandar taal ) it got detached completely . Over all XUV gave a better millage of approximately 10.5.

At the end of the trip none of the 3 SUV had anybody rattles or any under body damage which was a good sign of build quality.

Thank you so much for great insights Saket Bhai. I will post this as a separate article as tips for others.

Call Mannat Hotel in Bairagarh, speak to Rakesh at 9857 793 744. Give him my reference and you may even get a discounted price.

1. I’m starting my solo ride on 2nd week of july, is it good time to ride or should i delay my trip?
2. what kind of problems you think i will face as a solo bike rider?
3. Is there any particular starch where i have to carry extra fuel?
4. This is my Itinerary for my trip, what do you think? do i need to do any changes?

Hi Priyesh, Any reason why you want to give 4 days for Zanskar valley? Your biggest challenge as a solo rider will be in case of a breakdown or flat tire. Which motorcycle are you riding?

Priyesh Patil June 15, 2017 - 11:31 am

Hi Vargis,
Thanks for the replay, reason i have split zanskar ride into 2 days, coz one of my friend told me that road conditions from kargil to zanskar is very bad, but if I’m comfortable riding in one day, ill definitely doit in one shot.
I’m riding Pulsar AS200 and ill be mostly carrying required spare parts including puncture kit and tool kit.
i have done 21days Spiti & Ladakh solo ride last year in July with same bike. so I’m mentally prepared this times too. but after seeing videos of sach pass and specially killar to kishatwar route I’m super excited 🙂
also I’m aware that i have to carry extra fuel from nubra if I’m doing nubra – pangong – tso moriri – jispa.
apart from this let me know if i need follow up on something.
Thank you so much once again. 🙂

Hi Priyesh, No you pretty much nailed it brother. Kargil to Padum can be done in a day but if you have time in hand, then Do Kargil to Rangdum, Rangdum to Padum and then Padum to Kargil in one day. Will save you a day here that you can use elsewhere. For fuel, you can get some at the chadar tents at Pangong Tso so you may want to tank up there before proceeding. Rest you got it all covered already.

Hi Rats, work is still going on towards the top of the pass, all the equipment is still there but vehicles were allowed to cross. I guess they will take a few more days to complete declare it open but locals are already commuting on it.

Vargis I am planning for sach pass from Delhi -chamba-killar-udaipur-manali
I will start from Delhi on 14th July
Xuv 500 I choose for this trip.
I have doubts regarding whether as monsoon hits d mountains in july. So is it safe to go on these roads in rainy season .
Suggest me I am so confused. We have one Terrano and one XUV. Total 9 we are.
I drove to Ladakh and spitivally last years. As u told sach pass is daddy of all the passes. :). Not scared but want to be on safe side..
Thanx vargis bhai 🙂

Hi Karnesh Bhai, With Sach Pass, it doesnt matter when you go. The road will always be extremely bad between Bairagarh and Udaipur. It gets a little better only in September. Around 14th of July, Monsoon would just have arrived so there won’t really be too much of rain. But do not delay it any further because from 3rd week of July until August end is probably the worst time to go that way. Length of XUV may be a problem at some places, at sharp turns with steep ascent. Just my guess though, I have never taken an XUV up the hills so cannot really say for sure. You would know better as you own one. I was there last year in my Thar and while we were able to manage it easily, I noticed a Fortuner struggling around the turns. I know it all depends on the person at the wheel but just thought I will mention.

Hi Vargis, I am planning a trip to sach pass from dalhousie on 25th jun.We have girls with us. Could you please let me know How we start and what I would cover in 2 day and where do camping? Can we get campinv stuff on sach pass or need to carry from dalhaosui?
Sach pass scenic beauty is different than triund? Which one we prefer or both is worth to go?

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 29, 2017 - 3:05 am

Hi Ankit, no camping site around Sach Pass anywhere, it is a very secluded area. Do not attempt to camp on top of Sach Pass, it is very cold and dangerous. Sach Pass is a challenging area, very tough roads for someone seeking the thrill. If you are looking for scenic beauty, you should go to Triund.

You can do Dalhousie to Bairagarh on Day 1, then on Day 2 start early in the morning from Bairagarh, go all the way to Sach Pass top, ensure that you are on your way back before 11 AM and descend down to Chamba from Sach Pass. On Day 3 go to Mcledganj from Chamba.

Also I need inputs from you on my itinerary for a road trip from new Delhi to sach pass to Spiti and back. I have been to Spiti valley in Jan 2016 but this time I will be with Family ( 2 girls in age group 3.5 to 5 years)so I need to plan in much detail. We will be in two crossovers with good GC and AWD.
We will be carrying our camping gear and would like to use it where ever possible .
We are planning the below :
Day 1 – New Delhi to Chamba ( you can camp at kajjihar rather then going to chamba kajjihar would be a great place to camp no wildlife )
Day 2 – Chamba to killar (would be lil challenging as after bairaghar the road condition till killar is worse even in september ) bairaghar would be a suggestion for talk halt .
Day 3 – Kilar or Udaipur to Keylong ( these all are long stretch kindly plan accordingly after udaipur road condition is good as compare to sachpass killar udaipur )
Day 4 – Keylong to Chandar Taal (speak to tenzin camp ) or jamica they will allow you to pitch tent ) but you cant camp at chandertal you have to walk for 1.5km from chandertal camp site you can take your vehicle for 3km
Day 5 – Chandar Taal to kaza ( because in kaza you will get everything after all adventure you would like to have good stay & food , (also start early morning as much as you can )
day 6 : kaza – Key – kibber- gete-tosigang-kaza ) (amazing landscape & wildlife)
day 7 – kaza- langza- hikkim – komic -demul -tabo- (visit dhankar )
Day 8- tabo to kalpa – (visit geu-nako lake- kalpa suicide point )
Day 9 – rest you can plan accordingly
few Questions :
1) We are planning to stay at Chandar Taal so would like to gradually increase altitude after chamba. both kilar and udaipur seem to be at lower height. Could you suggest another plan at higher altitude ?
2) I have read you other post and as per that planning to camp at Nako ? will that befine . also last time i observed quite a few site on spiti river bed which was accessible and good for camping . Will it be a problem if we try that . Do we need any permission? Do we need to think about wildlife or any thing else ?
PS : If any one reading this would like to join us do contact us . Bigger group is Fun !

camping with family & in a bigger group is hassle because you dont get washroom which is difficult to manage also , so m,y recommendation avoid camping at all location camp if thats a camping site so you can use their washroom and avail food also easily .

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 18, 2017 - 2:46 pm

Hi Rohit – I would really recommend that you plan Chamba to Killar for two days. Do Chamba to Bairagarh and then Bairagarh to Killar. The only way to do this stretch on the same day is to start really early in the morning and rush through the entire day. The road conditions start to get bad and narrow way before Bairagarh which will limit your speed. Sach Pass is also an area where you can actually get stranded in case something goes wrong. So do it in earlier part of the day when there is still a possibility other people crossing the pass.

AMS will not be a problem after you come back via this route. Your body would already have adjusted by the time you reach Chandratal

Yes you can camp at Nako but wherever you camp, make sure that you do it next to a dhaba or another camp site. Do not camp in the middle of nowhere.

we are a bunch of friends planning to visit there in may but roads are closed and as i can read in ur reply “They will not allow you to take your car ahead after Satrundi check post but you can leave it parked there and walk as far as you can.”
we will be going by a local cab or bikes.
are we allowed to walk from there and trekking is possible.
can u suggest us the timmings to visit there should we go early morning and at what time we can get a vehichle to take us dalhousie back..
can we get some food up there or we should take pack foods..

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 16, 2017 - 9:41 pm

Hi Govind, The walk option too is completely based on the cops at the check post, they may allow you to walk ahead a bit or may not allow you to go at all. Go early in the morning if you want to make it back to Dalhousie the same day. The last dhaba or shops will be at Bairagarh, nothing after that.

Reply

You probably won’t find snow until closer to the pass, possibly after Satrundi check post. Best to take your car until the check post and walk a little. Cannot really comment from the safety point of view. This area is pretty secluded, in the middle of nowhere with almost no one around. Best to have some company with you. Until Bairagarh, it is perfectly safe.

2 days from where? If you are short on time, then I will recommend a trip towards Khajjiar from Dalhousie, you will enjoy that more rather than a long drive to Bairagarh. It is not really that scenic but it is challenging in my opinion.

A few of us friends are planning to ride to Sach pass, reaching there around 4th June. You mentioned that it would be tough. Can you please help me understand what to expect? Is it just slush and snow to be navigated or some real risk of falling off/land-slide etc.? If it is difficult but not risky, I’d like to attempt it.

Thanks in advance!
Gagan

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 9, 2017 - 3:16 pm

Hi Gagan – I would recommend to plan a couple of weeks later, probably after June 15th. Pass may not be open by 4th June and they won’t allow you to go any further than Satrundi check post.

By tough I mean badly broken roads, no roads at all, steep climb, slush, waterfalls on the roads, numerous water streams to cross. It is difficult indeed but not risky as long as you are careful and ride slow.

saket kumar May 2, 2017 - 4:41 am

Hi Vargis … Waiting for you comments on the above plan !

Thanks !

Vargis.Khan May 3, 2017 - 2:36 am

Hi Saket –

1 Your altitude acclimatization would already have happened as you progress via Sach Pass towards Chandratal, so I do not think you need to worry about it. If you want, I would recommend that you add another day here. From Chamba, go to Bairagarh and stay there for the night. This will also make the journey easier on next day. As a matter of fact, I highly recommend that you do this. Road from Chamba until Satrundi are way too narrow and you will be driving slow. After Satrundi and until Udaipur, it is a nightmare. Udaipur to Keylong is bad again. So add a day here.

2. Do not camp in the middle of nowhere, it is not safe really. If you want to camp, do it near some dhaba, camp site or at least where there is a local house around. You may ask the dhaba / camp site owner or the local and pay a little money to give you a spot. Upside of this would be that they would also let you use their washrooms which I must say will be beneficial since you have your family traveling with you.

Reply
saket kumar May 5, 2017 - 6:08 am

Thanks for your reply Vargis!

I may not have an extra day for another stop at Bairagarh and I think reaching to Bairagarh from Delhi in a single day might be hectic so I will stick to old plan and hope that ladies and kids acclimatize in 3 nights we stay in hills before we reach chandratal .

Thanks for your suggestion for Camping. That will help a lot of help . I was already worried about washrooms and the solution you suggested will be the best if they allow us.

Will follow your post on updated status of road conditions of sach pass . Thanks again !!

Vargis.Khan May 6, 2017 - 12:33 am

You are welcome brother. At Chandratal I know they allow for sure so you will not have any problem paying for a spot to camp.

Vargis.Khan May 3, 2017 - 2:38 am

Another point, camping in the middle of nowhere is not safe at Chandratal. There is wildlife here. Also, the camp site owners and local shepherds may also trouble you asking for money so avoid that. Best to talk to a camp site owner, and have them assign you a spot to pitch in your tent, bit away from their site. They will charge a nominal amount and in turn will let you use their washrooms. They can also serve food if you ask for it.

I read at some other websites that sach pass has opened for local transport . Is the information correct , could you check and confirm ? Also what king of traffic we should expect when we are travelling in last week of June ?

Vargis.Khan May 19, 2017 - 1:58 pm

Not that I am aware of but in any case, locals start to commute anyways by May. There are several shepherds that do not care about the road, it is easy for them because they live there. Do not go with any update as of now and plan only after June 2nd week.
