Rohtang Pass to Reopen Again on May 1st

by Vargis.Khan

Rohtang Pass to Reopen Again on May 1st: Rohtang was declared open earlier this month in the first week. The weather however turned drastically and it started to snow all across Himalayan region. Owing to this, BRO was forced to close the pass within a few days and it has remained so since then. As a matter of fact, it is not only Rohtang Pass; but the sudden change in weather has also changed the opening dates of Manali – Leh and Manali Kaza routes. Both of these were expected to be open by April end but now the opening has been pushed towards May end. The sudden spells of snow also forced BRO to close down Srinagar Leh highway after it snowed about 4 ft at Zojila top.

Good new however is that BRO is once again set to reopen the pass for locals and tourists both. Himachal CM is expected to visit Manali on 29th or 30th of April and will flag the pass open for 2018.

” Manali SDM Raman Gharsangi said tourist vehicles would be allowed till Marhi, 35 km from here, from May 1. People would be allowed to go to the Rohtang Pass only after ensuring their safety, toilet facilities, adequate parking space and garbage collection facilities, he added.

The peak tourist season in Manali starts in May. Thousands of tourists flock to the hill station to get respite from scorching heat and high humidity in the plains.

Currently, tourists are not being allowed beyond Gulaba, 23 km from here on the Manali – Rohtang road.”

This will definitely be a welcome and much awaited news for many travelers I am sure. After Rohtang was declared open in April 1st week, several people ended up planning their trips to Manali only to be disappointed when they learnt that the pass was closed again. If you were planning to visit Manali in next week or so, you will definitely be allowed to go until Marhi and will find snow there for sure.

Dear Vargis Bhai,

I appreciate the information you post regarding Manali & Rohtang. I dont see this kind of information anywhere else. For going to Marthi, which may be declared as open for tourists from 1st May, is special permission required or can all the tourist vehicles ply?

Thanks in advance.

Uday
