Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Wari La

by Vargis.Khan

Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Wari La is a route that does not get many visitors. Even among people who have been to Ladakh more than once, very few would have had driven on this road. It is one of the lesser-explored areas of Ladakh and definitely a very adventurous one. In this post, I will provide details on how you can travel from Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via the Wari La route, without having to go back to Leh.

Please note that in this post, I will only discuss the Wari La road. If you need to know more about visiting Ladakh, I will recommend taking a look at How to Plan a Trip to Leh Ladakh – A Complete Travel Guide. In this post, I have covered pretty much everything that you need to know before going to Ladakh.

Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Wari La

Wari La is a high-altitude pass in the Ladakh region, situated at an altitude of 17,400 feet. It is one of those lesser-known passes that has nowadays started to get some attention. It is one of the two direct roads that you can take to travel from Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso Lake or vice versa.

Earlier, people used to return to Leh from Nubra and reach Pangong the next day. However, these days almost everyone wants to head straight to Pangong from Nubra and save 1 day on their itineraries.

How tough is Wari La though? When does the pass open? What kind of vehicle should be used to cross Wari La, and can it be done on motorcycles? What are some of the precautions you should take while attempting Wari La? Hopefully, by the end of this article, you will have an answer to all these questions.

Wari La Pass

One thing about Wari La that you should know is that it is not your usual high altitude pass that you would have covered so far in your trip to Ladakh. The name of the pass, if I spell it as ‘Worry La’, aptly describes its climb and difficulty.

This pass is different and way more difficult. The last 20 km of the ascent is so steep that it will have you pop open the bonnet of even a 4×4 vehicle; allowing it to cool down once you reach the top. To add to this, there are several water crossings involved and the road is considerably bad. At the end of the climb, your vehicle would whimper and you would sweat, no matter how cold it is.

The climb is even tougher when you do it from Nubra valley’s side. You would rarely find anyone traveling on this road and for most of the journey, you would be all by yourself. There is no village where you can even get something to eat after Khalsar until Sakti, after crossing Wari La.

If your vehicle breaks down, you would definitely be in trouble so take a very calculative risk. Below is a map of the route you would be taking to cross Wari La. Click on the image below to view in full size or right-click and save it to your hard disk.

Wari La Route

Now let us talk about how you can travel on this route. For this part, I am assuming that you are already in Nubra Valley and are now planning to travel to Pangong Lake. Depending on where you stayed in Nubra Valley, you will have to travel back on the Khardung La road and arrive in the village of Khalsar.

After crossing Khalsar village, you need to take the road towards Agham Village. Do not take the upper route going towards Khardung La. That will take you back to Leh City. Below is a picture of the road towards Agham.

shyok road

Once you reach Agham, you will be at a bifurcation where the road left would take you to Shyok village. The road towards your right is the one you need to take to reach Wari La. Below are a couple of pictures of the diversion. These were taken from inside the car so I am sorry about the clarity.

wari la route agham village

Take the road to your right and a little while later, you will be driving uphill towards Wari La pass. For the initial part, the climb will be easy to moderate. But it is the last 20 kilometers that get challenging. On the way, there is the small village of Tangyar. Do not be surprised though if you did not notice it at all and just drove by.

Sakti & Pangong Road

Once you were at the top, take a break, relax and allow your vehicle to cool down. You will then start driving down and will cross another small village called Tathok on the way. On the other end of the pass, you will exit just after Sakti Village, on Pangong Road.

After Sakti, the climb of Chang La Pass will begin and after that, it is a straight run for the beautiful blue lake of Pangong.

Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Wari La

Distance & Time

The thing about the Wari La route is that it will take you almost the same time that it would have taken if you went back to Leh instead. As a matter of fact, it may in fact take you longer due to the tough climb. The difference in the distance is also negligible.

So why would you want to take this road? The answer is that you would have already traveled on Khardung La road while traveling to Nubra Valley from Leh. So rather than making the return journey on the same road again, you can add a different route to your travel plans and explore more of Ladakh.

Of course, it will also mean that you also crossed one of the difficult high-altitude passes of Ladakh and added another feather to your hat. Please ensure that you take an early start from Nubra Valley though. This journey will definitely take you all day to complete.

Other Tips

Your biggest worry when it comes to Wari La is the steep ascent. You would have crossed several passes so far in your Ladakh trip so make your best judgment.

If your vehicle struggled at any of the previous passes, then you need to give up the idea of attempting Wari La. If you are traveling in a hatchback or a sedan then do not even think about taking this route. For Wari La, if you have a 4×4 vehicle then nothing like it but for a 2×4 drive, you really need an SUV with high ground clearance. Even that would struggle at several places.

You also need to be confident in your driving skills. If some of the roads you encountered so far made your face turn white, you are better off not crossing Wari La at all. If you have a front-wheel-drive SUV, chances are that it would definitely huff and puff to climb up all the way.

For motorcycles, you really need an Enfield 350 or 500 CC for this road. At least I haven’t seen any other bike on this road. I came across a couple of guys on FZ and Pulsar 220 going back to Agham because after a certain point their motorcycles just refused to climb any further.

Read Wari La Pass – An Unforgettable Ladakh Experience to read the first-hand experience of someone who crossed the Pass on a newly bought 500CC Enfield.

Even with a Royal Enfield, travel solo and travel light. Do not carry a pillion leave your extra luggage back at the hotel at Leh if you can. If you are on a rented bike, the rule is plain and simple, Do not go towards Wari La.

When is Wari La Open?

The next question is, when does Wari La open? It is one of the passes that receive snow almost the entire year due to which it opens very late and closes pretty soon. It usually is declared open towards mid or end of June and remains so until late September or early October.

If you are traveling before June or after September, please find out in advance either in Leh or Nubra whether the pass is open or not. If it is closed or you are unable to get confirmed news, it would be better to skip Wari La and take the Agham Shyok road; which is also much better and shorter. Read How to reach Pangong Tso from Nubra Valley via Shyok Road for more details.

Permits for Wari La

Do you need a permit specifically for Wari La? The answer is No. You do not need any additional permission and your regular ILP will do for this route as well. All that you need is a solid vehicle, good driving or riding skills, nerves of steel, and an Inner Line permit for Nubra and Pangong both.

Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Wari La – Conclusion

Hi Vargis, Is Kela-Tso near changLa pass accesible ?

Reply

Yes it is but you will have to trek a little bit. Don’t bother though, it isn’t that scenic. More like just a water body.

Hi Vargisbhai,

We 2 friends will be driving Innova (Old version) on Leh-Nubra-Pangong-Leh route from 11th June to 14th June. Is it safe to drive through Wari La as we are only two persons. What kind of weather we will experience when travelling through said route during mentioned dates? Please advise.

Thanks,

Reply
Vargis.Khan April 22, 2018 - 5:40 am

Hi Tej Bhai – Weather will OK and the route is open as well. Problem however will be the steep climb of Wari La and it will definitely need some good driving skills to get your Innova to the top.

Hello Vargis,

I am planning to travel to Leh in May-June 2018, (May last week and June 1st week). I have planned a road trip from Pune and will be travelling in a Mahindra TUV 300 with my wife. Please advise if I plan to go to Lukung/Spangmik directly from Diskit, which route should I take, considering the vehicle which I will be travelling in and that we are only two travellers.

1. via Leh
2. via Wari La
3. via Shyok

Looking forward to receiving your advise on the same.

Thank you, in advance 🙂

Yes it may be a problem. Better take the Agham Shyok road for this journey.

Sequel: I have an Electra 350cc. From Shakti towards Changla, there is a steep incline, uneven terrain with loose sand everywhere so you wouldn’t know which way is the hard sand.. so my bullet + metal saddle carrier + luggage + pillion (my wife) = THE BULL WON’T CLIMB AN INCH. Even a 350 CC couldn’t.. then my wife decided to climb on foot (which is difficult due to less oxygen) with a bag (7-8 kgs), STILL the 350 was struggling, I remember the amount of hard work and struggle I had to do to make it climb those 100 mtrs (took around 30 mins). If the roads have been repaired (which i’m guessing, would have been done by now), then 350 can go, else it’ll struggle (there as well as when you approach Chang-La). (and I’m not novice, have done Spiti /chandratal before I attempted Leh.. oh boy, that was another level altogether, but then no matter how experienced you are, the ride has something in store for everyone)

I remember helping one of those guys out when they were ascending Chang-la (i was coming back from the other side) when his bike yielded to the incline and stopped, refused to start.. (it was a new Red Classic 350cc hired from Leh)

Prequel: I did Leh-Pangong last Sep. Initially was planning to go directly from Nubra, but at Khalsar army guys informed that the Agham route was closed as a bridge had collapsed there. So we had to go through Leh-Karu-Shakti, but again that stretch was being repaired so there was no road at all.

Hi Vargis,
We are planning to hire a tempo traveller from Leh.
Do you think, it is possible to go Pangong directly from Nubra via Wari La in September 2018 with a local driver in a tempo traveller with 12 people?

Thanks,
Kamlesh

Reply
Vargis.Khan January 25, 2018 - 3:17 pm

Hi Kamlesh – Wari La in a tempo traveler will be extremely tough, I do not think any operator or driver will even agree to that. It is a bit too steep of a climb for a temp traveler with passengers. You will have to take the Agham Shyok road.

Reply
kamlesh shinde January 25, 2018 - 4:03 pm

Thanks Vargis for the quick response.
So instead of going back to Leh, can we plan Nubra to Pangong in a day via Agham Shyok?

Any chances of this road being closed in Sept?

I am asking so that we can book the hotels accordingly.

Thanks Again 🙂

Reply
Vargis.Khan January 25, 2018 - 4:06 pm

Correct. From Nubra, take the Agham Shyok road and you will reach Pangong in about 6 hours. Road remains open in September unless you run out of luck and it is closed at your time of travel due to any reason. In all probability (except for unforeseen circumstances), it will be open.

Hi Vargis,

Bro we are 5 people and planning on travelling with 3 bikes (Mostly Royal Enfield Thunderbird)

1. Should we go Thunderbird 350 CC or 500 CC?
2. We are planning to Nubra Valley by taking the Khardung La pass route, which is the best route and how are the road conditions?
3. Is it good idea to travel from Nubra Valley to Pangong lake? if Yes how time would it take considering RE bikes

Reply
Vargis.Khan September 5, 2017 - 5:12 pm

Hello Nagaraju – Bhai if riding with pillion, opt for 500CC and 350CC for solo. The Khardung La pass route from Leh is just one road going towards Nubra, there is no other route there. Yes, you can travel from Nubra to Pangong and thus saving a day in between. Via Wari La, it will easily be an 8-10 hours journey. Via Shyok road, it will take you about 5-6 hours.

Hello Bhupinder – The online portal is merely for the purpose of filling out a form and taking a print out. You will have to reach Leh to make the payment and get it signed / stamped. Shyok road last I heard was closed and there is no ETA on opening. Swift is OK but I will not recommend to take it on Shyok route.

Vargis.Khan September 11, 2017 - 1:12 pm

Hello Bhupender Bhai, Taxi unions are definitely a big hassle in Ladakh, they just try to find excuses to force people to rent their taxis.

About the road conditions, are you referring specifically to Wari La or the entire route?

Depends on which bikes you have. If you are riding solo, your motorcycles are well maintained and you are confident that they can climb Wari la than take this route, other take the Agham Shyok road.

It depends on your entirely Abhijit. Shyok route will see you at Pangong in about 5 hours from Nubra, is more challenging, dangerous even and nightmarish ride. Wari La route is longer, about 8-10 hours journey, but will take across mighty Wari La, is more scenic and except for the Wari La top which is really tough, it is more of a relaxed and enjoyable journey. Shyok route is not that scenic, just a dirt tral with stones all around and a river flowing right next to you.

Very apt description of the Wari La pass. I read this article now after having done it last week (28-Aug-16) I had a front wheel Duster with one passenger and had to cool down with an open bonnet for 20 min near the top.
It is a very desolate drive with just 4 local cars passing by between Agham and Sakti.
There was ice in the air as well as on the road and the track is quite challenging with sharp bends and broken water crossings.

These are allowed but to be on the safer side, do not take those bikes to nearby areas. I would highly recommend that you reach Leh on bikes rented from Delhi, leave those at the hotel and rent another bikes from Leh to visit nearby areas. I am saying this because there have been a lot of fuss in Leh last year about people visiting in self drive taxis rented from outside Leh. I know bikes would be hard to tell if rented or self owned but just be safe.

I would not suggest that. Best advice would be to reach Leh, inquire at a few places, test the bike and only rent it if you are 100% sure that it will be able to pull the weight on steep ascents.

You can take a pillion but the only concern around that would be the capabilities of the motorcycle. Rented bikes arent usually that well maintained and their engines are not that strong to pull weight of two people and luggage on ascents, specially in a terrain like Ladakh. You can do it only if you are sure about the motorcycle. Do not want to be pulling or pushing a motorcycle up there, correct?

Again thanks for your reply.

if I start from Amritsar in evening around 6.00 to reach pathankot (121 km) is it safe for night riding.

Until Jammu it is quite safe to ride in the night. After Jammu the hilly region starts so it gets a little risky

Excellent detail.. i have been to ladakh before ..this time would like to do the nubra – pangong route. From AGam, how is the route to shyok village – Durbuk- Tangste – Pangong? Why do i have to take the wari la route? Will be travelling by a 4×4

You do not have to take the Wari La route. Agham Shyok road is the shortest and quickest way to Pangong from Nubra. Wari La is just another route, longer and tougher and you just get to cross another pass.

The Agham Shyok road is rough, hardly any tar, speed will be slow but can take u to Pangong within 6 hrs from Nubra.

Wow amazing description on Wari La. Can it be done on 4X4 Fortuner in June 2nd week?

Also would you help us to plan our Ladakh circuit. We are a family of 4 including 2 sons aged 21 & 11. We are from Nagpur, Maharashtra and would drive all the way to Delhi to embark upon this once in a lifetime journey. I have done the entire Lahaul & Spiti Circuit last year successfully in my Fiat Punto.

Thanks and best regards,

Unmesh

Yes, it can be done in a Fortuner 4×4. I myself did it in Safari 4×4. Let me know the questions you have and I would be glad to assist in any way that I can.

However I highly doubt that it would be open in June beginning.
