Hotel Rangyul Kargil

During my recent trip to Zanskar Valley, I got a chance to stay for a night at Hotel Rangyul in Kargil. The post below is a brief overview of my experience at the hotel and whether or not I will recommend it to anyone.

In all honesty, our stay here was a very brief one. We arrived at the hotel at 10.30 pm and checked out at 6 am the next morning. So the opinion that I post below is based only on the few hours that we were here as guests.

On an overall basis, our stay here was a pleasant one. We were treated well, the rooms were comfortable and the food was good.

So if you were going to be in Kargil anytime soon and looking for a hotel to stay in, you can definitely consider Hotel Rangyul as an option. Read on to find out more.

Sonamarg to Kargil

Let me first provide some detail on our journey for that day, just to give a little context. We started from Sonamarg at 6 am and per my calculations, we were to reach Kargil by 12 noon or 1 pm at most.

Unfortunately, there was a landslide at Zojila that blocked the pass temporarily. We were left waiting on the road for a good 9 hours and were finally allowed at 4 pm to cross the pass.

Due to this, by the time I parked my car in front of Hotel Rangyul in Kargil, it was 10.30 pm.

To my surprise, when I reached there, the staff was at the reception waiting for us. They even kept their kitchen open well until midnight and served whatever we asked for.

We were the last guests to arrive that evening. The staff at the hotel waited for us until we got there, made sure we were checked in comfortably, helped with the luggage, and served food, and only after that did they retire for the night.

After a tiring journey of 16 hours, it felt really good to be attended to so promptly.

They served us tea after dinner at 12 midnight after dinner, before switching off the lights in the kitchen. All this was only because they knew about our 16 hours ordeal at Zojila Pass.

Rooms

The rooms are fairly large, spacious, and clean with an attached bathroom. The queen-size bed is more than enough to accommodate two people and is very comfortable to sleep in. A sofa and a table are provided as well and there is plenty of space to keep all your luggage.

Like the room, the bathroom is also spacious. There is a shower in the bathroom with hot and cold running water. The beddings were all very clean with comfortable pillows. I really did not have anything to complain about in this aspect.

Parking

There is plenty of parking space in front of the hotel. We arrived late in the night and the hotel was fully occupied. There were already a lot of cars parked by the other guests and even then, we had no trouble finding a spot to park our car.

Price

Kargil is an expensive place in terms of the hotel. Finding budget accommodation here can be tricky, especially during the tourist season. The average rate of good hotels here ranges from Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3500 and that is what we paid.

They charged us Rs. 2500 for a room for two, meals included. I knew this was the standard rate all across Kargil anyway and we wouldn’t find anything for less. So I took the deal and booked our stay.

This can be a little different at the time of your arrival. I was there in the peak tourist season but if you were traveling in the off-season, you may be able to negotiate the price down a bit.

Food / Kitchen

The hotel has a dedicated kitchen and the food was quite delicious. I really had no complaints in this regard. It remains open from quite early in the morning till late at night.

The hotel also has a very large dining hall. At our request, they even opened the kitchen at 5 am and served us tea before we left for Zanskar Valley.
