Every city has its own set of places that have been tagged as haunted for long. Some of them do have a history of violence while others just got named so because they have been there for a long time. In this article, I will list down such 5 most haunted places in India. From the dry deserts of Rajasthan to the majestic hills of Himalayas; and crowded cities like Delhi and Mumbai; these haunted sites are spread all over and have some of the most interesting tales that you would have ever heard of related to them. Whether or not the tales are true or if the place is indeed haunted always remains to be the unanswered question; but claims by numerous people of seeing things here they could not explain rationally is the common factor between all these places.
One of the foremost questions that arise is why people search for so called haunted places. If you think about it, considering all the scary tales, it would only makes sense if everyone just steered clear of such a site. In reality, it is quite the contrary. The very fact that there could be a ghost or something supernatural at these places is what attracts a lot of people to these haunted sites.
Do you too often find yourself wondering what happens at these places after the sun goes down? The only sure way of finding is to be there at night and wait for something supernatural to happen. A lot of adventure enthusiasts attempt it; visit places that others would tell them to stay away from. I am myself among such people. Logically speaking, I must discourage you from entering these places at night because at most of them, it is prohibited by law. A more sinister reason however could be that if there is indeed something lurking here in the dark, you do not want to go poke at it.
Most Haunted Places in India
As I mentioned above, there are probably hundreds of these sites in our country and listing them down all on one page is a task impossible. I will write these articles in a series; first listing some of the most haunted places here on this page; and then continuing to break down by cities and providing information on other places apart from the ones listed here.
1. The Haunting of Bhangarh Fort
If there was ever a contest of the most haunted site in India; or of a site that was believed to be most haunted; Bhangarh will win hands down. It is probably the spookiest place in all of India. When it comes to Bhangarh, it is not just merely a house that gets the status but rather an entire fort, an entire city which is believed to be haunted. It is not one soul or ghost that haunts these ruins but probably of thousands that lived and perished here.
There are several stories around why Bhangarh moldered and its people fled. Scientific theory is of Chalisa but it is the local lore that is the interesting stuff. Story of a dark magician who fell in love with the princess and when denied, casted a spell on the entire city is the most famous one. There is another one of a sage who was disturbed by the people and cursed the city. Whatever the reason is, it definitely has earned this old fort the reputation of being home to numerous dark and evil spirits. There have been incidents here of people getting hurt and even dying at Bhangarh.
If one is to believe the locals, they have seen all kinds of supernatural stuff here. Bhoot, chudail, Jinn, tantriks, demons; you name it and Bhangarh has got it. Even if you do not believe in all the ghost stuff, fact still cannot be denied that the entire set up of these ruins between the hills does give an eerie or spooky feeling.

2. The Woman in White at Delhi Cantt
Next in line is Delhi Cantt; which too is not just one particular spot but the entire area of Delhi Cantt. The legend has it that a woman died or probably was murdered here when she took lift from some strangers at night. Ever since then, her spirits haunts the area all dressed in white. She waves at passing vehicles to stop, asking for lift. If someone stops, she either completely disappears right at that moment or will first board the vehicle and then disappear. If someone chooses to ignore and not stop, she runs after vehicles at an amazing speed that makes the driver unable to get away from her.
Incidentally, I happen to live quite close to Delhi Cantt and one night thought to investigate the entire thing. I roamed around in the Cantt area on my motorcycle for a few hours and something did happen. To know what really goes on at Delhi Cantt at night please read The Truth behind the Haunting of Delhi Cantt
3. The Witch of Lambi Dehar Mines
Lambi Dehar is a series of mines located near Dehradun and long shut. Like every other so called “haunted” place in the world, even Lambi Dehar mines have had their share of misfortune, spread over several decades.
As per the locals, this mining area was home to more than 50,000 workers. There was an accident at the mines which wiped out the entire population of the village. Each of the poor 50,000 souls working here died but their spirits and ghosts are still present here.
Another ghost that is believed to be haunting these mines is that of an Army officer who used to live in Mussorie with his beautiful wife. His wife was cheating on him with another man and murdered the Army officer near the mines. The ghost of that Army officer is still trapped at the mines, forced to repeat the scene of his death every night, over and over again for eternity. People talk about how he has been heard still by several people, crying out in pain, every night.
The third legend is of a witch who has taken shelter in the mines and has been responsible for several deaths that occurred here. It is believed that her soul is still trapped in the mines and is getting violent day by day. She seduces and lures young men in the mines and kills then brutally. Then there is also the tale of a woman, wife of a miner, whose ghost is seen running towards the mines at nights in order to save her husband from an explosion that she imagined happening.

4. The Jinns of Jamali Kamali
Jamali Kamali consists of an ancient mosque and tomb of a Sufi Saint. There are several stories about the Jinns that are now believed to reside within the premises. Some of the interesting ones that either make people to stay away from here; or to be here at night are instances of sightings of lights, apparitions, animals growling; and a feeling that there is someone else standing right next to you. People have mentioned that they sometimes felt a person peeking from behind a pillar; but when they walked over to it, there was no one there. A wisp of air as if someone just breathed on your neck and a laughing sound are a few other stories. The best one however is of people getting slapped by an invisible force.

5. The Curse of Kuldhara
Pretty much on the same lines as Bhangarh Fort; there is another set of ruins in Rajasthan that share the same story of one sided love and a cursed city. This is the ancient village of Kuldhara, now standing in ruins. Per the legend, a certain Salim Singh the minister of the state, once visited this village; and fell in love with the beautiful daughter of chieftain wanting to marry her. When denied he threatened to kill everyone in the village. Afraid, all the villagers left their homes overnight in search of a new place. But before they left, a curse was set upon their lands to make sure that no other human will ever inhabit it.
Many stories are now floating around this small village that is nothing more than ruins. Some say that the power of the curse was so strong that it made the village uninhabitable for humans; but attracted the supernatural elements to come and live here. Witches and ghosts are now believed to wander the village at night. Some believe that the villagers of Kuldhara did in death what they could not in their lives. After they were pushed out of their homes, they spent their lives longing to return; which they did after their deaths, returning to Kuldhara as spirits and still reside here. Another legend states that no one can spend an entire night in Kuldhara without dying or at least losing his or her sanity.
Kuldhara has a long history, from prosperity to getting called haunted. For a detailed report on Kuldhara, please read The Cursed City of Kuldhara
