Manali to Kaza Road Closed for 2017

by Vargis.Khan

Manali to Kaza road Closed: With recent spate of snowfall in the entire Himalayan region, road from Manali to Kaza has been marked as closed. Even though Rohtang Pass is still open and locals continue to travel across Kullu, Lahual and Spiti valley; it can be assumed that the road is not safe to travel on for tourists.

Chandratal was already declared closed back in October and there is no place to stay there anymore. It snowed last week heavily throughout Spiti and the road across Kunzum Pass was blocked temporarily. Authorities were able to restore it to prolong connectivity for as long as they can. A greater risk however is of frost and black ice forming on the roads.

For now, if you were thinking of traveling to Spiti; plan your journey from Shimla and return via the same route. Contrary to common belief; the road from Shimla to Kaza remains open throughout the year except for occasional roadblock caused by heavy snow. You can reach Kaza via Reckong Peo, Pooh, Nako and Tabo and will be able to visit areas like Kibber, Komik etc. The stretch from Kaza to Manali and Chandratal however would have to be kept off the itinerary until the road opens next year.

However, even while traveling from Shimla, please ensure that you keep at least 1 day as buffer. In case the road somewhere gets blocked, you will at least have some time to wait it out. For now, the road from Karchham to Sangla and Chitkul remains open but that too usually gets blocked after it starts to snow heavy in December.

It all depends on the weather but yes, you should be able to travel on Manali Kaza route. Accommodation at Chandratal on 13th Oct may not be available though.
