As reported by TOI, the opening of Manali Leh highway will possibly be delayed this year. BRO usually starts clearing snow off the highway every year of March 1st but the work had been delayed by almost a month this year. Some parts of the highway received highest recorded snowfall in last 36 years, burying some parts of the road near Rohtang and Baralacha La under 40 ft of snow. As per the sources, snowfall is expected to continue until late April or early May.
Manali Leh highway is usually declared open officially in early June however the locals usually start to commute on the road way before that. Baralacha La is usually the last pass to be cleared as it continues to receive snow throughout the year. The towns of Sissu, Tandi, Jispa, Darcha and others in Lahaul valley become open for civilian traffic as soon as Rohtang Pass is declared open but the road beyond Baralacha La remains dicy until June. With the snow clearing work starting in early April this year, it remains uncertain by when will BRO will be able to declare as safe for civilian traffic.
If you are planning to travel to Leh this year and it includes plying on Manali Leh highway, it is best to plan your trip in or after the month of July. However if you must travel in June, it is best to take the Srinagar Leh road which is expected to open in early May.
