Ladakh in 13 Days – Leh Ladakh Itinerary for 13 Days

by Vargis.Khan

Ladakh in 13 Days

In this post, I will provide details on planning an itinerary covering Leh Ladakh in 13 days. I will break itineraries into 3 different sets. The first one is for people traveling by their own vehicle. The second set is for people who will be relying on public transport completely. The third one is for people who flew into Leh City and have the entire 13 days to spend in Ladakh itself.

If, after going through the information below, you have any other questions,  you can contact me on Instagram and I will be happy to answer. You can also consider subscribing to my YouTube channel and asking a question there.

To organize your trip to Ladakh, book a taxi, rent a bike, or get the best hotel rates, you can contact Kunal @ 9910402252. From luxurious hotels to budget stays, he can help get you the best rates possible.

Leh Ladakh in 13 Days

I will begin by first suggesting and detailing an itinerary that I recommend, followed by a few different versions of the same journey. For all other details on visiting Ladakh like mobile network, clothes to pack, altitude sickness, the best time to visit, where to stay, etc, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Ladakh – A Complete Travel Guide.

The first itinerary is assuming that you are traveling by your own vehicle.

  • Delhi to Jammu – Day 1
  • Jammu to Srinagar – Day 2
  • Srinagar to Kargil – Day 3
  • Kargil to Leh – Day 4
  • Leh – Day 5
  • Leh to Diskit – Day 6
  • Diskit to Pangong via Shyok – Day 7
  • Pangong to Leh via Chang La – Day 8
  • Leh to Tso Moriri via Chumathang – Day 9
  • Tso Moriri to Pang / Sarchu via Tso Kar – Day 10
  • Pang / Sarchu to Manali – Day 11
  • Manali to Delhi – Day 12
  • Buffer Day – Day 13

Before I go on explaining the journey further, let me first write about why I am recommending traveling via Srinagar rather than reaching Ladakh via Manali which most people prefer to do.

Acute Mountain Sickness in Ladakh

Reaching Ladakh via Srinagar makes the journey easier in terms of altitude sickness. If you went via Manali, the gain in altitude is tremendous and a bit too quick for the body to handle.

This is why the majority of the people on the Manali Leh highway suffer from AMS at either Sarchu, Pang or any of the high-altitude passes. On the other hand, when you go via Srinagar, this gain is a bit gradual; giving our bodies enough time to acclimatize.

If you are traveling with family and have kids or elders accompanying you on the trip, I will strongly recommend that you reach Ladakh by Srinagar Leh highway and return via Manali.

For more details on what AMS is and what its symptoms are, please read How to Handle Acute Mountain Sickness in Ladakh.

If you were bringing your kids along on the journey, then I will also recommend reading How to Plan a Ladakh Trip with Children or Infants.

Buffer Day

You will notice in the itinerary above that I have kept 1 day as a buffer. When traveling to a place like Ladakh and for as many as 13 days, it is of utmost importance that you keep one day over and above your entire travel plan.

No matter how popular Ladakh may get as a tourist destination, the fact still remains that it is a high-altitude desert where the uncertainty factors remain to be quite high.

You may be forced to extend your stay at any of the places en route and should be able to afford to do so without running into a problem back home.

Fuel Availability in Ladakh

Petrol pumps in Ladakh still remain to be just the ones in Leh City. Other than that, there is just one fuel station in Khalsar in Nubra Valley. What it means is that depending on your vehicle and its mileage, you may have to carry spare fuel in some places.

However, Petrol and Diesel are now available almost everywhere in black. You can easily get fuel at Chadar tents or small shops. The quality of the fuel however is questionable and it is a choice that you should opt for only as a last resort. Read Fuel During Ladakh Trip – How to Manage for more details.

Ladakh in 13 Days

Now getting back to our itinerary, let me now give a day-by-day run down of how your journey will be. This is just an example of how an itinerary can be planned and depending on the places you wish to see, you can tweak and mold it as you desire.

Day 1: Delhi to Jammu

Not much to write about this day except for this will be a bit of a long and monotonous journey. You will cover about 600 kilometers in 11 to 12 hours. The good news is that the road is good for the most part of the journey.

There will be a lot of tolls between Delhi and Pathankot though. Hotels in Jammu are available in plenty but stay at one closer to Jammu Srinagar highway.

Day 2: Jammu to Srinagar

Now there are two ways that you can do this journey. Either take the Jammu Srinagar highway which is about 270 kilometers in total. There is a lot of vehicle movement on this road though and traffic jams are common.

An alternate route is via the Mughal road. This road is also the length of the two and runs a total length of around 330 kilometers via Rajouri and Shopian. Traffic however on this road is very less and it also is more scenic of the two roads.

For more details, please read How to Travel from Jammu to Srinagar by Mughal Road. Once you arrive in Srinagar, you can either stay at a houseboat or a hotel as per your preference and budget.

Day 3: Srinagar to Kargil

This is when you start your journey on the beautiful Srinagar Leh highway. The condition of the road is mostly smooth for the entire 220-odd kilometers of the journey.

You will be traveling via some stunning vistas and towns like Kangan and Sonamarg and Drass. Enjoy the scenic beauty all day and know why Kashmir is fondly called a paradise.

Take a lunch break at either Sonamarg or Drass and have some delicious Kashmiri food. Kargil war memorial near Drass is definitely worth a visit. You will also be crossing the high-altitude pass of Zoji La in between which is probably the worst patch of the road on this highway.

Day 4: Kargil to Leh

Starting as early as possible is of utmost importance on this day because there is so much sightseeing involved. The maximum number of tourist attractions that you will cover on Day 4 will probably be more than any other day of the journey.

Namika La and Fotu La will be two high-altitude passes that you will cross before reaching Leh. Lunar Landscape, Indus Zanskar Confluence, Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Patthar Sahib, and Maitreya Buddha statue are some of the well-known tourist places that will fall on the way.

For a list of tourist attractions on the Srinagar to Leh route, please read What to See on Srinagar Leh Highway – A Complete List.

Hotels in Leh are available in plenty these days and in all budgets. However, if you were traveling in peak tourist season then I would recommend that you call and book in advance.

Day 5: Leh

You will rest for this day in Leh City and go for some local sightseeing. Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and Leh Market are some of the most common areas visited by tourists. For a complete list, please read Tourist Attractions in Leh City.

Day 6: Leh to Diskit

The first place you will head to for sightseeing in Ladakh is the beautiful Nubra Valley. Diskit is the headquarters of Nubra and that is where you will be staying for the night. You can also opt for a hotel in Hunder which is only a few kilometers from Diskit.

From Leh, you will climb up 35 kilometers to Khardung La Pass first and then drive down to Diskit via Khardung Village and Khalsar. The journey is 120 kilometers and can take you anywhere between 6 to 7 hours to complete, depending on your speed and breaks.

Bactrian Camel, Diskit Monastery, and Hunder sand dunes are some of the places that you can visit on this day. Read Tourist Places in Nubra Valley for a complete list of must-visit attractions in Nubra Valley.

Day 7: Diskit to Pangong via Shyok

Destination next is the beautiful lake of Pangong. Before you head there, however, you may also want to take a short diversion toward Panamik in Nubra Valley. From Diskit, head back to Khalsar and then take the turn towards Panamik.

There is a hot water spring at Panamik that you can visit. After spending some time, reach back Khalsar again and this time, take Agham Shyok road to arrive at Pangong Tso.

The entire journey from Diskit to Pangong will take you about 6 to 8 hours. At Pangong, you can either stay at the campsites or as a paying guest in the village of Spangmik.

Day 8: Pangong Tso to Leh

You will now head back to Leh City but will take a different route to get there. From Pangong, drive back to Durbuk and then take the road towards Chang La to reach Leh City via Karu. The road is mostly good with a bad patch at Chang La. The entire journey will take you about 8 hours so please start from Pangong accordingly.

Day 9: Leh to Tso Moriri

The next place on our itinerary is Tso Moriri. This lake may be smaller in size than Pangong but equal in terms of beauty. As opposed to Pangong, it actually is a freshwater lake and there is also wildlife around it.

Karzok is the small village on its banks where you will be staying for the night. To reach here, drive all the way to Upshi from Leh and then take the road towards Chumathang.

The road condition is mostly good till Chumathang but then turns really bad for the last 50 kilometers between Sumdo and Karzok. There are several hotels and guest houses at Karzok where you can stay for the night. For details, please read How to Plan a Trip to Tso Moriri.

From Karzok, you will head back home straight without coming back to Leh so please check out of the hotel and carry all your belongings with you. Do not leave anything behind.

Day 10: Tso Moriri to Sarchu / Pang

From Karzok, drive back 50 kilometers again to Sumdo. From Sumdo, take the road towards Tso Kar via Polo Kongka La. You will drive across More Plains, reach Tso Kar, and exit on Manali Leh highway near Debring.

Now depending on the time you took to reach here, you can either stay at Pang or go to Sarchu which is about another 70 kilometers from Pang. As a rule, if you reach Pang by 3 PM then go to Sarchu. If you arrive here at 4 or later, then stay at Pang itself. You may also want to take an early start from Karzok for this day.

Day 11: Sarchu / Pang to Manali

If you stayed at Pang then start as early as 7 AM because this is going to be a bit of a long journey. If you stayed at Sarchu then make sure you are on the way by 8 AM latest.

You will cross 4 high altitude passes, drive on the entire Manali Leh stretch and reach Manali by the evening at around 5 to 6 PM. The reason why I am stressing about starting early is that the traffic at Rohtang will eat up at least 2 hours before you finally make it down to Manali.

Day 12: Manali to Delhi

Not much to write about this day except that it will be a long journey back home. Manali is about 550 kilometers from Delhi and it can take as many as 14 to 15 hours to reach home.

Day 13: Buffer Day

You can use this day to stay at any place on the itinerary as per your liking. Or you can just come back home on Day 12 itself and use Day 13 to relax a day at home before getting back to work.

This is it. That was your 13 days trip to Leh Ladakh. This of course is just one of the many ways that you can complete this trip. Having 13 days in hand definitely gives you several choices for changing and tweaking your itinerary. Let me also suggest a few other examples as well in case you did not like the first itinerary.

13 Days Itinerary for Leh Ladakh – # 2

The above-mentioned plan was best for someone traveling by their own vehicle. For someone making this trip by public transport, I will recommend an itinerary like below.

  • Delhi to Manali – Day 1
  • Manali to Keylong – Day 2
  • Keylong to Leh – Day 3
  • Leh – Day 4
  • Leh to Diskit – Day 5
  • Diskit to Leh – Day 6
  • Leh to Pangong – Day 7
  • Pangong to Leh – Day 8
  • Leh to Kargil – Day 9
  • Kargil to Srinagar – Day 10
  • Srinagar to Jammu – Day 11
  • Jammu to Delhi – Day 12
  • Buffer Day – Day 13

Details

Public transport here will be in the form of both buses and shared taxis. You will however rely more on shared taxis rather than a Bus. Keeping an additional day as a buffer will be even more important if traveling by public transport.

This itinerary is via Manali rather than Srinagar because in my opinion, reaching from Manali to Leh by Bus is easier than Srinagar to Leh. Board a Bus from Delhi to Manali first. Then board the Manali to Leh bus which completes the journey in 2 days with a night halt at Keylong.

For visiting Diskit and Pangong, go to Leh Bus stand early in the morning. If there is no bus available then board a shared cab going that way.

The next day, you will return to Leh by shared cabs again. You have no choice but to come back to Leh from both of these places because there is no public transport on internal routes like Shyok Road.

Leh to Srinagar

The Leh Srinagar Bus starts at noon from Leh and travels non-stop to Srinagar for 18 – 20 hours. So either you can break the journey into 2 days by traveling from Leh to Kargil and Kargil to Srinagar.

Or you can spend the first half of Day 9 sightseeing in Leh City and board the Srinagar-bound bus at noon. This bus will get you to Srinagar early in the morning which will give you the entire Day 10 for some sightseeing in Srinagar as well.

Ladakh in 13 Days

13 Days in Ladakh – # 3

If you were flying into Leh and had the entire 13 days to spend in Ladakh itself, then you can plan your itinerary like below.

  • Leh – Day 1
  • Leh to Diskit – Day 2
  • Diskit to Turtuk – Day 3
  • Turtuk to Panamik – Day 4
  • Panamik to Pangong via Shyok – Day 5
  • Pangong to Hanle – Day 6
  • Hanle to Karzok – Day 7
  • Karzok to Leh via Tso Kar – Day 8
  • Leh to Kargil – Day 9
  • Kargil to Leh – Day 10
  • Buffer Day – Day 11
  • Buffer Day  – Day 12
  • Fly Out – Day 13

You can use the buffer days to extend your stay at any of the places in the itinerary. I will recommend using at least one day to stay back in Leh on Day 2 as well.

This will give your body more time to acclimatize to high altitude before you start traveling to other places. People who catch a flight to Ladakh are in fact more prone to AMS rather than people who drove there.
