How to Get Rohtang Pass Permit Online in 2024 – 25

by Vargis.Khan

rohtang pass permit online

There are two ways that a permit for Rohtang Pass can be obtained. You can get it in person from the SDM office in Manali or you can apply for it online. Both the permits are issued from the same day limited quota of the total number of vehicles allowed. Getting the Rohtang Pass permit online can save you a lot of trouble and time. In this post, I will run you through the process of doing so.

Ever since its implementation, the permit rule for Rohtang has been troublesome to almost everyone traveling that way. Don’t get me wrong, I totally support the “Save Rohtang Pass from Pollution” idea. But in the peak tourist season, it is a battle in itself to get the permit and to get it on time.

Thankfully, in order to make it easier for everyone, authorities have introduced several revisions and changes in the last couple of years.

One such relief was building a web portal where people could apply and obtain the Rohtang pass permit online. For more details on visiting the pass, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Rohtang Pass.

How to Get Rohtang Pass Permit Online?

There are two types of permits that get issued for Rohtang. The first one is the permit for ‘Tourism purpose’. This one is for people who want to visit Rohtang Pass and come back to Manali the same day.

The majority of the tourists visiting Manali fall under this category. There is a daily limit for this permit and the maximum number of vehicles allowed is 1200 per day, further divided in 800 Petrol run vehicles and 400 Diesel engines. It is issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

The second permit is for ‘Travel Purpose’. It is issued to people who want to cross Rohtang Pass to the other side. Anyone going towards Lahaul Valley, Ladakh, or Spiti Valley will fall in this category. There is no limit applied to this permit and these are issued as many as required in the day.

Rohtang Pass permit Online Booking

Now coming back to the question of how to book a Rohtang pass permit online? For this, you will have to visit the Online Portal of the Manali Tourism Department.

There are a few options on the page. Below is a brief explanation.

online link for permits

Rohtang Pass Permit

Your regular permit for visiting Rohtang on a day trip. This permit is issued for all days except Tuesdays as Rohtang is closed to tourists on this day for maintenance work.

Rohtang Pass Special Permit

This is the same as the regular permit but is reserved for personal vehicles only. Taxis and commercial vehicles cannot apply in this category.

Beyond Rohtang Pass

This one is for people traveling to Leh Ladakh or Lahaul & Spiti Valley. This is issued for all 7 days a week. So if you will not be coming back to Manali on the same day, you are free to travel on Tuesdays as well

Manali Entry Fee

This is to pay the green tax that you are required to pay just before you enter Manali. If you are applying for Rohtang Permit, you do not have to pay this separately. It will get covered in that permit fee only. If you do not want to go to Rohtang however, then you will need to pay this fee.

Then there are a few other options to check the availability of permits, to validate your permit and check its status, and to request a refund for the amount you paid.

From this list, please click on the link of the type of pass you wish to apply for. It will take you to another page that will brief you about the documents required to obtain the permit and the charges applicable. Submit your vehicle details, make payment and the permit is yours.

Please note the portal opens online for specific hours of the day and the timings change every year.

If you do not get an option to click on any of the links, it means that the permits are either not being issued, or the pass is closed.

Documents Needed

Documents required are pollution under control certificate, your vehicle’s registration certificate, and your driving license.

Rohtang Pass Permit Fee

All vehicles will be required to pay a sum of Rs. 500 as permit fee and Rs. 50 congestion charge, so a total of Rs. 550 per permit. Buses and Heavy motor vehicles will have to pay Rs. 100 for congestion charge so a total of Rs. 600 per permit.

These charges are however applicable only for tourism purpose permits. For traveling beyond Rohtang (travel permits), you will only have to pay a congestion charge of Rs. 50. There will be no refund if you do not use or try to cancel your Beyond Rohtang permit.

Other Tips

You can apply for permits 2 days in advance. So let us say, for example, If I am traveling to Rohtang on the 3rd of a month, I can apply for permits from home on the 1st and then start the journey once I am assured that I have the permit.

Your vehicle should also not be over 10 years old or else you will not get the permit.

Vehicles coming from Lahaul, Ladakh, or Spiti to Manali do not need any permits to cross Rohtang Pass. This obligation is only for vehicles going from Manali towards Rohtang.

Check-Post

A check-pot and Barriers have been set up at Gulaba with a computerized system to verify the permits. For example, let us say you obtained a Beyond Rohtang permit to go to the other side of the pass. But you tried to use this permit to just visit Rohtang top and come back to Manali the same day.

Please do not attempt this. . You will be caught at the Gulaba check post while returning. There will be barriers on both sides of Rohtang Pass recording the entry and exit of permits and vehicles in a computerized system.

Vehicles found in violation of the above law will be fined and black-listed.

Rohtang Pass Permit Offline

Permits at SDM office, Manali will be issued all 7 days (yes on Sundays too). You will need to visit the SDM office between 10 AM till 1 PM to submit your documents.

The permit will not be issued at the same time though. After submitting the documents, you will need to go back again between 3 PM to 5 PM to collect your permit.

Conclusion

If you were for any reason unable to get the permit on time, you will have to use the Atal Tunnel to get to the other side of the pass. If you were going to rent a taxi in Manali, the driver will arrange for the permit on his own. But it is always wise to clarify this with him first.

The same applies to motorcycles too. The bike rental agencies in Manali can arrange the permit for you for an additional cost.

I hope this information on how to get Rohtang Pass permit online was of help. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below or at our Community Forum, and I will be happy to answer.

Hi Vargis,

First of all thanks a lot for your detailed post. We are 3 females with 3 kids (of 7 yrs old) travelling to Manali by 18th May. Will have a hired cab from Delhi. From kids perspective what do you suggest: To just visit Rohtang pass and come back or cross Rohtang and stay a night at Jispa and come back next day? We seek safe adventure. The kids are quite used of camping since they were 2 yrs old. Also which pass should we apply in that case?

Reply
Vargis.Khan April 21, 2019 - 5:57 pm

Hi Vibha – If your kids were fine in Manali, showed no uneasiness at Rohtang or on the way as well then you can travel to Jispa and come back the next day. If any of the kids complained of not feeling well then you should drive back down to Manali.

Dear Vargis,

Just need a final confirmation from you

I am travelling first time to Leh and planned trip via Manali. I am traveling from Delhi to Manali on 31st Aug morning and will reach Manali by 1st Morning. I would like to start travelling to Leh on 2nd Sep early morning via Rohtang on bike and plan to reach Sarchu same day. Have below queries :-

1. Suppose I get the permit online do I need to get it stamped from any Government agency or just online permit print out is enough.

2. The main problem is that I am going to rent a bike from Manai, and so far I do not have the bike details (number, PUC details etc). Can I still apply online ? If not, what could be the possible way to get the permit same day, so that I can leave from Manali next day.

3. What is the total amount of fees I need to pay to cross Rohtang Pass on bike.

We have booked a cab for 8 days himachal sightseeing. Earlier cab driver had said we need to pay extra for rohtang pass permit. But now he is demanding Rs.20000 saying he’ll get permit only once for this season. I remember reading that even a tourist vehicle gets 2 permits a week. Is it true what he is saying that tourist vehicles get permit only once a season and his vehicle wont get it after this?

Rohtang is a daylight robbery these days and what you said is a live proof of the same. It is just a 1 day journey and these guys are charging so high. When are you going by the way? The rate in Manali as of now is Rs. 7000 for a trip to Manali. Rs. 20,000 is way too high, do no rent that guy.

Are taxis outside HP allowed to go till Rohtang pass. Next, we will be staying in Keylong and Sissoo for two days. What precautions will we need to take considering kids. Is there breathing problem at this height.
Since, we will be crossing Rohtang, so, only one beyond Rohtang permit is required. Till what point will we allowed in our taxi on Rohtang pass road. Also, what is the frequency of buses and can we board from last point till taxis are allowed i.e. midway, not at Manali.

If you are going to Keylong then you will be crossing over Rohtang pass. You will get to the top, climb down the other side so the entire route will be covered. Staying at Keylong will not be a problem for kids as well but do not let them run around and tire themselves. Keep their activities in check and they will be fine. There is a daily bus from Manali to Keylong that you can board and yes, for going to Keylong, you need to get Beyond Rohtang permit.

I was trying for online permit and click on the Beyond Rohtang but unable to do so as it shows that

“The online application for the issuance of permits can be made between0:00 hrs to 0:00 hrs daily.”

what it means?

Suppose I get the permit online do I need to get it stamped from any Government agency or just online permit print out is enough.

What permit do I need if I am travelling beyond Rohtang…do I need to pay only CONGESTION FEES or do I need to take permit for Rs. 500 for Rohtang separately.

Please guide….I am first time travelling and have family with me.

Thanks

Mr. Kumar – Option of getting Rohtang permit online is not yet available because the pass is not yet open. The entire Manali to Leh stretch is closed as well. It is still snowing at the passes so one can tell you for sure right now whether or not the Manali Leh route will open by 26th. There is a high chance that it may remain closed.

Also, if we do not receive permit, what are the approx charges if we hire a vehicle in manali for rohtang pass only? Will we get it that time?

Yes you will get the permit for Delhi hired tempo traveler. Taxi charges in Manali are outrageous, they will ask your Rs. 10,000 or even more for a trip to Rohtang.

Hello Varghis. I will cross Rothang to Leh in June 2018. You wrote one could go on Tuesdays. On the permit side however it is said, one cannot cross Rothang on Tuesdays due to maintenance work on Tuesdays. What is the latest information on that> Because i am traveling with an international group in a tempo traveler and need to do other hotel bookings which are time sensitive. Thank you for you reply! regards Jayadip

Hi Jayadip, They change it every year. So far people were allowed to cross Rohtang on Tuesdays but the word is that the may pass be completely closed on Tuesdays this year onwards. There is however no confirmation on this so far, will only get more clarification once they allow tourists towards Rohtang. To be on a safer side however, I will suggest that you do not plan to travel there on Tuesday.

Hi Vargis Ji

Can you pls tell more about obtaining an undertaking. It would mean even if I’m taking an online permit, I would need to go to SDM Offc fill up that form of undertaking and submit.. also, do I need to get the online permit attested at SDM office? Please let me know. Thanks

Dhiraj

Hello Dhiraj Ji – Undertaking is pretty much the same thing as the permit. Once you get it online and make the payment, no need to get it attested anywhere.

I noticed there are two new timings for getting the online Rohtang Pass permits at http://admis.hp.nic.in/ngtkullu/Home/InformatoryScreen. The permits can be obtained online in two time frames:
(i) 10:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)
(ii) 16:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)

Hi Varghis,

Thanks for your informative blog. Could you please assist me on the following :

If I understand the blog correctly, If I am travelling to Spiti via Manali , I need the following permits :

1) Beyond Rohtang ( http://admis.hp.nic.in/ngtkullu/BeyondRohtang/InformatoryScreen)
2) Green Tax for Manali.

If Yes, I would like to know if there is any restrictions on the number of permits issued for this type of travel.

Thanks for your help

Abhinav

Hi Abhinav, You are right. There were talks of restricting the number of vehicles crossing over Rohtang but I do not believe it has been implemented yet so no limitation as of now

Hi Varghis,

I am travelling to Spiti via Manali. If I understand your recommendations correctly, I need two permits:

1. Beyong rohtang Pass (http://admis.hp.nic.in/ngtkullu/BeyondRohtang/InformatoryScreen)
2. Green tax for manali.

Is this correct?

Also , I would like to know, is there any restriction on the number of online permits issued in my case ?

Thanks for your help.

Abhinav

sorry by mistake i mentioned it as manali-saranah-kaza. its shimla – sarahan-nako-kaza-keylong.

Hi Suman – Yes you can definitely do it. Take the Shimla route to reach Kaza, exit on Manali Leh highway near Gramphoo and continue to Leh.

Hii Mr. khan , U stated that for travelling to Ladakh, permits for bikes can be obtained only from office.. There is an option in the portal for beyond rohtang pass now for which u have also provided link later in the article. So getting that online would be sufficient for going to Leh right? or we still need to go to the office?

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 25, 2017 - 2:37 pm

Hello Mr. DIP – Yes they introduced bike permits online this year. Until last year it was not available on the portal but now it is. You can apply for the permit online and that will suffice.

Hi Vagis Khan, we are a group of 6 people planning for Manali Leh tour. On our first day we are planning to reach jispa by evening. Can you suggest me if I can take a halt at routang pass provided that I will get both routang pass permit and beyond routang pass permit. Is it possible?

You just need to get Beyond Rohtang permit Sudhir and you will cross Rohtang Pass on the way anyways

Hi Vergiskhan.
Thanks for your blog. It is very very helpful.
I am trying to book the “beyond Rohtang” permit but not able to find the link. Checked with local travel agent & they told beyond Rohtang permit is not active nowadays. I don’t know what I should do.
I have planned to visit Rohtang pass & then visit keylong.
Please guide on urgent basis.
Thanks in Advance
