good restaurants in leh

In this article, I will put together a list of a few good restaurants in Leh City, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. I have eaten at some of these places myself but not all. A few are my own recommendations, some were suggested by friends, and a few were added to the list after I read great reviews about them over the web.

Good Restaurants in Leh

Quite honestly, eating in Ladakh sounds to me like “world on a plate”. There is just so much here that you can try, from Kashmiri to Ladakhi, to Tibetan, the list is truly endless.

Some of the places are a little costly but there are plenty where you can eat as much as you want without going bankrupt. I will try to keep the list as comprehensive as I can.

Leh View Restaurant

If you want to try some delicious Kashmiri dishes with an awesome view around, eat at Leh view restaurant. They have some amazing Kashmiri dishes on the menu as well as some other regular north Indian food.

Lamayuru Restaurant

This one is probably one of the most recommended restaurants in all of Leh and is almost on every list of good restaurants in Leh. It serves great Indian & Chinese and at quite an affordable price.

Their menu is quite comprehensive and the only thing amiss is probably south Indian food. I even usually avoid eating at the hotels that I stayed at and go to Lamayuru for lunch and dinner. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Neha Snacks / Sweets

This one comes highly recommended if you want to grab a quick bite. Their Puri Chhole and samosa chaat are quite famous. It is a great yet affordable place to try some other delicious snacks. It is in fact so popular that you will literally have to squeeze through people to get your order.

Chaska Maska Dosa House

Craving to try a delicious Dosa? Visit Chaska Maska and eat all that you can. It is a great place to try some south Indian.

Il Forno

Want to try an amazing pizza with cheap beer and an amazing view? Go to Il Forno. Their Beer is quite good and cheap and the view from their rooftop garden is good as well. It is not only limited to Pizza here though. They offer other main courses as well for a reasonable price.

La Pizzeria

This is another great place to have some good pizzas and cheap beer in an attractive garden. Try their thin crust pizza, it is quite good and reasonably priced between Rs. 200 – Rs. 300.

A mug of beer would cost around Rs. 150. They also have a pumpkin soup on the menu for Rs. 90 or so which I will recommend.

Chopsticks

If you want to try some Asian food, then Chopsticks is a great place to eat at. Their Thai green curry is very delicious and just for Rs. 90.

Himalaya Cafe

This is another great rooftop cafe that serves great Indian and Chinese food. The view of the mountains while having your dinner is amazing.

Chandan Dhaba

Craving for some of the regular and delicious Desi dishes at a Dhaba? Are you on a budget trip? If yes then Chandan Dhaba will be a great place to eat at. For about Rs. 60 you can get a thali with daal, sabzi, rice and roti. Food is quite good and well within budget.

Shubh Punjabi

Another great restaurant to have some desi Punjabi food. Try their Lassi, it is good.

Little Cafe

Another great option if you are on a budget trip. Their Thali is for about Rs. 100 but more than enough for one person to eat.

Jeevan Cafe

This is located on Changspa and has been recommended highly by a few friends of mine. Their menu is quite vast, prices are reasonable and service is excellent.

Gohil’s Restaurant

If you want to have a sophisticated candlelight dinner with your spouse, then you should visit Gohil’s restaurant. They have an open-sided roof where they light candles and paraffin lamps on the table while serving dinner, a perfect romantic setting. They serve delicious Punjabi and Himachali food.

Bob’s Cafe

I just remember this place for one item only, their “Chicken Dynamite”. Try it out, it’s amazing. Their specialty is spicy crispy fried chicken but they serve pasts, burgers, juices as well.

The chicken dynamite comes with a coleslaw side and two toasted sandwiches filled with the chili-herb-garlic mix.

Lehchen

If you are in a mood to have a few drinks with friends at a Bar while eating some delicious lamb strips, then you should go to Lehchen. They are famous for their cocktail bar and lamb strips.

Gesmo Restaurant

Another one of the most well-known and recommended restaurants of Leh. It is on Old Fort Road and is famous for their Yak Cheese Pizza. Lamayuru restaurant that I mentioned above is quite near to Gesmo.

Wazwan Restaurant

This is one of my most favorite places for Kashmiri food. Their Kashmiri dishes are mouth-watering. If you are a non-vegetarian then you must visit this place a visit while you are in Ladakh. It is highly recommended by me.

Hi Vargis,

We regularly check out your blog. It is extremely informative and up-to-date. Thanks so much for giving us readers the true picture about the places you visit.

We are currently in Leh, and have been told a very strange and curious comment by the owner of the guest house where we are staying. That non-Ladakh Indian citizens cannot invest/grow any hotel-related business here in Leh, like guest houses and/or restaurants….. even if they have a partnership with Ladakh partners….. because the guest house will be boycotted. Is this true or just something to stop non-Ladakh Indian citizens from investing/having a guest house business with a Ladakh local?

Subhendu Ji – It is near Jamia Masjid in Main Bazar. Nothing too great though, a cheap place where mostly the workers eat but perfect for anyone on a budget trip.
