Finally Implemented Google AdSense

When I first started this website about 7 years ago, it was primarily for three reasons. The first one was to learn something new. I had zero experience in web designing or creating a blog but I was quite fascinated with the idea. So I started to Google about how to create a website and learnt everything along the way. Second reason was to share my travel experiences with the world which was the main thought in my mind while I was creating this blog. Over a period of time, these two reasons got mixed together to create a third and most important reason. This whole thing kind of became a hobby which gradually took shape of passion. I realized that I started to love to write on my blog and this was one thing that I could sit and do all day long. One thought that did not occur to me at all initially was to make money out of my website.

After my blog was up and running and I had some content on it, I of course started to share the link with friends and family. A few months later, a friend of mine suggested me the idea of making money out of it. I kind of was not too excited with the thought as I knew that my website was not getting the amount of traffic that would be required to make a decent enough amount of money. However still, just for the sake of it, I decided to try Google AdSense. Result was of course what I already expected. Google rejected my application for two reasons. First was that my domain was not at least 6 months old and second was that my website was in violation of their copyright terms. This did not make any sense to me at all as whatever information I put on my blog was my own writing and the pictures were all clicked by me. I did not pay much attention to it though and continued to keep the blog as my hobby and never again tried to monetize it.

A few years went by, 6 to be precise and my blog started to get a good number of visitors each month. I am in a 9 to 5 job that I enjoy and that pays me well so even after the traffic to the blog increased, I still did not consider using my website for making money. 6 years later, ironically enough, the same friend again suggested me to try Google AdSense again. It reminded me of how Google had rejected my application initially and for the sake of finding out if they will accept now, I applied again. I was quite surprised when I received an mail from them stating that my application had been accepted and they asked me to place an ad unit on the blog so they could test before finally approving my application. I did what was asked of me. I logged in to my Google AdSense panel, created a ad unit and put it on. What I did not realize at that time though that Google had asked me to do it on one single page whereas I updated the code in the entire template. Second time, due to this reason my application was again rejected.

I again kind of forgot about it for next 1 year and got busy with the job. Now this year in May, I again thought to try AdSense. I again resubmitted my application and the same thing which happened the second time happened again. My application was accepted and they asked me to put an ad unit on one of my pages. However, surprisingly again, this time I completely forgot to do it. Due to some turbulence in personal life and busy schedule at the job, AdSense slipped off my mind and I did not put any ad anywhere on my blog. However what happened next was completely unexpected and a pleasant shock. I received an email from Google stating that my application was fully approved and my Google AdSense account is now active. Yes, without putting that ad unit that they had asked me to.

So the first step was completed, the first hurdle crossed. Now I did not have any idea how the entire ad thing works, how Google AdSense pays and what the criteria is. All that I knew was that you put an ad on your blog and you get paid some amount, how much I had no clue. This again was a new thing for me so after reading about it on the web, I successfully put in an ad unit. To be quite honest, I actually wasn’t expecting any money at all because one thing that I knew was that you get paid when people click on your ads which I really didn’t think that anyone would. So the ads ran for an entire day and when I logged into my AdSense account the next day, I had made some money which wasn’t really much. It was a very small amount but it still made me jump out my chair in joy.

So yes, I finally made some money. It was a strange feeling. I never knew that an amount as small as that could make anyone so happy. It was like a whole new concept dawned on me and I decided to continue running the ads and work a little more towards earning money online. It is actually great in a way, you pursue your hobby, share your experience with the world and make some money out of it along the way. Not bad huh?

Hello Varghis Bhai
I was wondering what job do you have? As you also go on long tours. How do you get such long holidays from work? I am also an avid traveler but lack of time binds me.
