Clothes for Ladakh Trip : What to Pack

clothes to pack for ladakh

What clothes to pack for Ladakh trip? This definitely is the first question you got to ask yourself as you start putting your bags together for a trip to one of the coldest and remotest parts of the country. Pack too many and you will just be dragging countless bags along. Pack wrong or less and things will turn miserable. But if you carried the right type of clothes, the entire vacation will be fun from start to finish.

In this article, I will provide some quick tips on packing for Ladakh and the kind of clothes you should carry. It will heavily depend on the month of your trip and the mode of travel but I will try to cover all. If you had any questions after reading the article, you may comment and ask towards the bottom of this page.

Please note that in this article, I will only be talking about the clothes that you should be packing for your trip to Ladakh. But for other details like how to reach, when to go, what to see, where to stay, and other safety tips, please read How to Plan a Trip to Ladakh – A Complete Travel Guide.

Clothes to Pack for Ladakh Trip

The good part when it comes to Ladakh is that irrespective of when you travel, you will surely need to pack woolen and winter clothing. It is a cold desert that you are heading to so you will have to pack for a winter-like climate even in the months of May and June.

The tricky part however is that temperatures in Ladakh fluctuate highly depending on the location and hour of the day. Nights can be extremely cold whereas days during summer can be pleasantly warm. Standing in the sun would make you look for shade and the moment you are in shade, it would make you want to step in the sun again.

It is a place where you are likely to get sunburnt even in winter and would need a cold cream even in summer. Winters are a different story altogether at a whole another level when temperatures remain subzero throughout and you will have to remain in your Eskimo suit.

Hence packing the right type of clothes for Ladakh trip can be a little troublesome, especially if you were traveling on a motorcycle.

What clothes to wear in Ladakh

Most of the tourism in Ladakh happens in the months of June till September; when both the highways from Srinagar and Manali remain open. The weather during this time is pleasant enough. While nights will remain to be quite cold, it is very rare that you will experience extreme temperatures.

The kind of clothes you carry at this time will be a lot different than what you will if you are traveling from October to May. Let us take a look at a monthly comparison.

In Summer

If you are planning a trip to Ladakh in summer, then the trick is to pack clothes that can be worn in layers. What is means is that rather than carrying 2 heavy woolens, carry 4 lighter ones with plenty of cotton clothes.

Temperatures in Ladakh fluctuate and remaining in heavy woolens at all times will be quite difficult during summer. During the day, you will walk around wearing just a T-Shirt and Trouser but the moment the sun goes down, you will be reaching out for a jacket.

The advantage of layered clothing is that you can just keep putting on more clothes if you are feeling cold and lose some clothes in case you start to feel warm. Carry multiple layers in form of cotton T-Shirts, thermals, light woolens, and windproof jackets and you will be just fine.

In Winter

A winter trip to Ladakh will have you facing sub-zero temperatures so prepare accordingly. Carry a lot of thermals, heavy woolens, a windproof jacket, waterproof shoes, insulated socks, woolen monkey cap, and sunglasses are a must. It is not only the night but days too will remain extremely cold so you must keep yourself warm and comfortable at all times.

From November to March, you must pack heavy woolens and prepare for extreme temperatures. Thermals are a must for these months.

In Monsoon

In Monsoon season, you should pack clothes that can dry faster, like polyester. June till August sees pleasant weather when you can get away with light woolens and windproof jackets.

Do not carry any heavy clothes and opt for the light summer ones. Look for a jacket that is waterproof as well. The trick will again be to pack clothes in layers but opt for stuff that is either water-resistant or will not take too long to dry. If it was not too much trouble, bring an umbrella as well.

Ladakh is in a rain shadow area which means that it either does not rain here at all or rains very less. Global warming however changed things significantly. I was once stuck in Nubra Valley for 3 days because a sudden rainfall washed away an entire section of the road near Khardung La. Then there was also the cloudburst in Ladakh in 2010 that killed hundreds, remember? On top of it, the route you will take to get here from Srinagar or Manali receives heavy rain each year.

Clothes for Ladakh Bike Trip

Now let us talk about how your packing will be if you were traveling by bike, which is always a preferred mode of travel for Ladakh. By road, Ladakh remains accessible only from late May to early October (most of the time) so you do not need to bring heavy woolens. That you cannot pack anyway because riding a bike on such tricky roads while you were wearing heavy woolens will become difficult.

For your bike trip, pack your regular cotton clothes and pairs of jeans/trousers. Match it with inners/warmers/thermals and a heavy windproof jacket.

Lower Body

Find one trouser or a Jeans that is a little thick and is your least favorite. This will become your riding trouser. Wear this every day as you ride because there is no point in getting all your trousers dirty. Your T-Shirt / Shirt will get protected by the jacket but nothing is going to save the trouser. It is bound to get extremely dirty. If you bought a riding gear that included the pants then you do not have to find jeans of course.

Every morning, put on a warmer first and then wear your riding jeans on top of it. When you reach your destination, change into a clean pair of trousers. This will save you the hassle of packing too many trousers for the trip. My last ride to Ladakh was just in one pair of jeans, a few pajamas, and shorts.

I have covered the shoes part later in the article.

Upper Body

You will need to wear a warmer first. The second layer will be your regular T-Shirt or Shirt. On top of both, wear a heavy jacket that is warm, windproof, and waterproof as well. A down jacket will be the best for this purpose.

In case you do not have one already or could not find a suitable one, buy it from Manali. If you have good negotiation skills, you can easily get a good deal over there. From my own personal experience, those jackets are quite good and will last for a few years. All my riding jackets so far have been bought from Manali only.

While you were looking for a jacket, find one that goes all the way up to the neck. That way, you can wear raise it to the neck and then bring down your helmet on it. This will protect your neck as well as block any air from entering the helmet.

Gloves will be the most important part of the packing. Trust me, you can ride in any kind of condition but you simply cannot go even a kilometer if your fingers or nails were freezing. Find gloves that are comfortable, waterproof, and windproof.

Clothes to Pack while Traveling by Car

If you were traveling by car, then you can just wear the clothes that you are most comfortable in and carry a few warm jackets or woolens. While you are in the car, light woolens will do. When you are out sightseeing in the evening or morning, a heavy jacket, cap, muffler, and gloves will be needed.

Try not to switch on the heater while you were driving in Ladakh. You will run the risk of suffering from altitude sickness if you do. Rather, wear some light woolens and keep the window down slightly to keep circulating the air.

Clothes for a Ladakh Trip by Flight

If you were traveling by Air, then just follow the tips that I shared above depending on different seasons. If you are catching a flight to Leh in summer, plenty of cotton clothes and a couple of light jackets is all that you need.

However, if you intend on hiring a motorcycle in Leh, you will again have to carry a down jacket, or you can also rent one in Ladakh. If you were catching a flight in winter, you will have to bring heavy woolens.

What kind of shoes to wear in Ladakh

Let us also briefly take a look at the kind of shoes you should pack. There are four factors that will decide and define your packing.

If traveling by car of flight for a regular vacation, just pack your regular sports shoes. That will suffice. If traveling in winter, match those with woolens socks. It will add an extra layer of protection.

If traveling by bike, just bring your normal sports shoes. If you were in boots, find one that will not get ruined by water. As an accessory, pack a pair of rubber sandals like in the picture below. When you are at a water crossing, stop for a minute, remove and secure your shoes, wear these rubber sandals, and cross.

shoes to pack for ladakh

There will be three benefits of this. The first is that your shoes will not get wet. So you will not have to worry about bringing too many shoes or spend money on buying new waterproof or riding boots. Second is that since these are rubber sandals, it will dry within seconds. There will be no hassle of putting wet sandals back in the bag. The third is that since it covers your entire foot, you will not risk getting hurt while crossing.

If you were planning to go on a trek, like Stok Kangri, you need to bring good trekking boots with a solid grip.

If you were traveling in the winter season, you will have to pack shoes that are ankle length, can protect your feet well, and keep the snow out as well.

Gloves for Ladakh

In winters, carry both a light pair of gloves and a heavy thicker one. That way, you can put on the lighter ones first and then the heavy ones to ensure that your hands remain warm. For summer, carry a thick windproof one if you are riding a motorcycle. If you are in a car or catching a flight, a nice pair of woolen gloves will do.

Clothes for a Camping Trip

If you intend to go camping on your own, you will need woolens or warm thermals and a really good sleeping bag for the night. If you are however staying at a campsite, then you do not have to bother carrying anything extra just for camping because all the campsites provide good enough beds and blankets to keep you comfortable at night.

Other Tips

  • Always keep your woolens or Jackets handy. Even if you are going out for a walk in the afternoon, carry your jacket along even if you do not feel like wearing it.
  • Carry full sleeve T-shirts if you can because they will also help you fight the sun when you do not have your jacket on in the sun. As I mentioned, Sun is quite harsh in Ladakh, and getting a serious tan or even sunburn is quite easy.
  • Carry warm woolens socks. Carry a few pairs if you are riding a motorcycle so that you have enough socks to change in case the ones you are wearing get wet at water crossings.
  • A muffler will come in real handy so it is better to carry one.
  • Carry a Monkey cap or Balaclava. It is a must if traveling in winter. In summer, it can be helpful when you are taking that evening stroll and want to sit around the bonfire at night.
  • Carry a regular cap or Sun hat for day to protect your face against the sun.
  • Sunglasses and it is a must again for winters. The glare of the sun on the snow can be quite harsh for the eyes.
  • Carry a sunblock lotion with the highest SPF.
  • Do not even think about carrying shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless clothes, or even high heels for that matter.
  • Do not carry tight clothes as well. You will be putting on layers of clothes in both summer and winter and tight clothes will become a big problem if you have several layers of them on you.

What wealth of information you have shared out here Vargis… it’s an incredible help!
I am travelling with family including two kids -12 & 8 yrs- from June 11-20. We have an overnight stay at a campsite in pangong towards the end of the trip. Given the month of travel (mid June) would it be enough to carry a heavy jacket and couple of light woollens for the camp stay?
Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello Vargis,

We are planning to visit Leh from September 03, 2021 to September 06, 2021 by flight.
We shall be covering Pangong and Nubra during the stay.

1. Clothing – Thermals + Cottons is okay with loose Jacket/Woolens?
2. We will have 2 kids(both 18 months old) in the group of 6 adults. Any precautions to be taken for them? I have read your blog about traveling Leh with kids and then decided to confirm on this trip.
3. Will there be snow during first week of September?
4. How does it rain in first week of September? Should we carry monsoon gears? Should we carry extra shoes, if Incase the one which we are wearing gets wet in rain?

Vargis.Khan August 1, 2021 - 5:15 am

Hi Mufaddal,

1. Yes, that will suffice
2. I will recommend talking to a Doctor as well, please. My knowledge was only limited to what I wrote in that post. Sorry.
3. Snow on the ground – Yes at top of the passes. Snowfall – Very rare chance
4. It does not rain in Ladakh, except for rare occasions. It is in a rain shadow area. Chances on rain in September will anyway be very less with monsoon departing.

Hi Patrick – Yes you can get it in Delhi and no, it will not be a massive expense. It however depends on the amount of time you are spending in Delhi.

Hello Vargis, We are travelling Leh on July 12th 2019 and return flight will be from Srinagar. We are spending 2 nights in Srinagar but we are not sure where we should head for our second day of Srinagar, ‘Pahalgaam’ or ‘Gulmarg’. Gulmarg will be close but I read comments about visiting Pahalgaam more than Gulmarg. What is your suggestion on this.

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 31, 2019 - 7:33 pm

Hi Madhavi,

Both places are equally beautiful. But if you are planning to go on Day 1 and return on Day 2 then plan Gulmarg. If you are going on Day 1 staying on Day 2 and returning on Day 3 then plan Pahalgam.

Reply
Madhavi June 3, 2019 - 11:29 am

Thanks Vargis for your response. Actually we are staying both nights in Srinagar only. Day 1 is pre-planned for House boat and day 2(should be a 1 day return trip) we are not sure where to go Pahalgam or Gulmarg, because we need to come back to Srinagar on the same day, we have night stay in Srinagar only. Next day(day 3) we have to checkout and catch our flight, so we are not counting 3rd day.

Then it would be better to go to Gulmarg Madhavi. Start early from Srinagar, reach Gulmarg, walk around, do some sightseeing, have lunch and return to Sriangar. See sunset from Pari Mahal.

Hi VArghis,
Nice job with the blog and stuff. Read several of your articles and they are of great help.
I am visiting Leh in October. 12th to 21st by air.
I have been to Leh earlier as well, in 2011 via Manali-Leh-Srinagar route by bike.
Only this time I am traveling alone.
My flight lands early morning and I am planning to get acclimatised the day1, taking permit and stuff and local sight seeing. Day 2 – i am planning to visit Hemis national park and visit a few monasteries and getting acclimatized even more
Day 3 – start early and leave for Nubra
Stay nubra overnight.
Day 4 – leave for Pangong. Stay pangong overnight. I have heard there is a space observatory near pangong. Planning to visit that too. Do you think there will be an issue in this plan?
Day 5 – buffer
Day 6 – reach back Leh
Day 7- leave early for Tso Moriri
Stay overnight at Tso Moriri
Day 8- leave for Leh
Day 9 – local sight seeing, maybe Hemis national park again as I am a wildlife enthusiast.
Day 10- flight to Delhi

I am not rushing to go leh-nubra-pangong-Tso Moriri
I want to visit leh atleast once, either coming back from nubra or after pangong.

Do you think this plan can be made better?
Thanks!

Hello Vargis,

Thanks for sharing detailed information about clothing guides. It was really helpful. I have few concerns regarding our trip to ladakh in month of November (mid).
We are planning to visit Leh on 9th November for a week by air. Please suggest if we should travel at high altitudes like Khardung la pass at that time, is it safe to visit? Also Is it worth to visit Pangong lake at that time, as i heard we won’t be able to stay there at night (will be missing milky way galaxy view). I am really confused whether to plan my trip or not.

Thanks.

Hi Arpit,

1. Visit Khardung La – Yes you can
2. Is it safe – Yes
3. Is Pangong worth it – Yes definitely
4. Overnight stay – No, you will have to make it a day trip
5. Milky Way – It is visible almost from everywhere in Ladakh

Hi, thanks for this very informative blog. I am planning our dream Ladakh trip in September. However, I will have my senior citizen parents with me, both are 65 and normally healthy, with no medical condition. Please suggest dos and don’ts and if we should directly fly in and out of Leh or try the route from Manali. Thanks in advance.

Hello Vargis,
We are planning Manali to Leh by bus in mid October (from 14th). I know it’s going to depend on the weather, which is unpredictable, but, after your experience… how feasible do you think this could be?
Will we still find bus transportation services? or private ones will be the only option by then?

Thank you!

Reply
Vargis.Khan August 29, 2018 - 1:41 pm

Hi Guille – Manali to Leh bus will definitely not be available by Mid Oct. You will have to look for a shared cab and that too will be highly dicey.

Guille August 29, 2018 - 2:15 pm

Thank you, Vargis! Actually, after my comment, I did review many of your articles regarding this subject which helped me lots to get the picture of how things are.
By the way, congratulations on the great and useful job you’re carrying on with this site. This is real help. I realised that from the 1st week of October, it’s either me and my own transportation or… back to Delhi and fly!
Unfortunately, I cannot bring it forward since I arrive in India as soon as the 11th.

However, by reading your lines, I just realised this is a must-do trip to me. Hopefully soon, one of these “Septembers”!

Thanks again and stay well.

hey Vargis, we’re planning our first trip to Kashmir and Leh and your website has been super helpful!

I just have a few questions, if you could get back to us about these, it would be great.

is it safe for women to travel here in small groups alone?

is the cellular network reliable or is it still pretty sketchy?

Also, does this itinerary sound ok or should we change it in any way:
Day 1: reach Srinagar by flight, evening sightseeing
Day 2: Gulmarg/Dachigam National Park – please suggest if one is better than the other – and back to Srinagar
Day 3: Sonamarg
Day 4: Kargil
Day 5: Leh
Day 6: Nubra Valley
Day 7: Leh
Day 8: Spangmik (Pangong lake)
Day 9: Leh for our flight back the next morning

Hi Radhika, I have known a few women to have traveled to Kashmir and Ladakh alone and haven’t heard back of any safety issues so far. Only BSNL will work in Ladakh at most of the places, rest will only work in Leh city. Your itinerary looks Ok. Only change is on Day 7 that I will suggest. You can head straight to Pangong from Nubra without needing to come back to Leh.

Radhika July 18, 2018 - 3:00 pm

thanks a lot Vargis! i read on another blog post of yours that the road from Pangong to Nubra is the least recommended (and dangerous), which is why we were going to head back. we’ll head there directly.

here’s the post that made us think we need to head back to Leh:

It will be a long journey but if you want, you can actually go straight to Tso Moriri from Pangong via Chushul and come back to Leh the next day.

Start your journey as early as possible, leave latest by 7-7.30 am. You will reach Pangong by 1pm if going by SUV. Take your time in enjoying the Shyok Valley road. It is the most beautiful valley road in Ladakh apart from a bit dangerous.

Hi Manju,

We went there in last week of September last year. The weather was great in that month. It was a bit cold in night. You need thermals for night and layered cotton clothes for day. If you are going by flight, put some thermals in the hand baggage, because you need it just after deboarding the flight because of chill air in runway area.
The best part of our tour last year was the awesome road conditions made by BRO from Leh to Nubra to Pangong Lake. It is the best time to enjoy the road of Ladakh.

Hi Sulekha – 5 days trip from Delhi to Leh and also covering Srinagar? That is impossible. You will have to pick either Ladakh or Srinagar or add more days to your trip. Ideally, to cover both, you will need at least 9-10 days.

Please if you can recommend any tourist taxi service for the spots visitation.

As far as I understand we need to carry enough full sleeve cotton cloths for layering and 1 or 2 jackets apart from muffler, caps, socks and gloves…correct me if I am wrong…also v r planning to get thermals…is that advisable?

Thank you

Hi Smita,

For a 4 days trip, please see the post below.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/visit-leh-ladakh-in-4-days/

For taxi in Ladakh, please contact Nasir at 9906229203. He is a nice guy and a good driver. I will recommend booking him.

You are right about clothes. That should do it. Carry thermals for the lower part of the body. Upper part will anways remain covered under jacket and all so wearing thermals underneath may get a little uncomfortable. It is the waist below that will have just one layer of protection so a thermal for lower body will help.

Hello Vargis,

I read your blog but not completely. I am planning a return trip from Chandigarh to Leh in 7 days by car.

My questions are as below:
1. Is it advisable to do this?
2. Can we cover most of the places there?
3. What would be the best location to visit in 6-7 days period and what would be the best route?
4. What shouldn’t we do?
5. And most imp how the permit thing works, as we are coming from manali way.

Waiting for your reply.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Varun,

1. If you mean Chandigarh – Leh – Chandigarh in 7 days then no, I will not advise this.
2. You can but you will barely touch the place and go back. 3 days to get to Leh from Chandigarh, 3 days for coming back and one day you will just rest in leh.
3. You must do Manali – Leh – Manali and keep Srinagar off the itinerary
4. See the three posts below. You will need permit in Manali and Ladakh both.

Hello Mr. Adiga,

In terms of clothing Sir please enssure that you are carrying some light woolens but a heavy windproof jacket is must. Carry something to cover your neck, ears, head and face as well.

If terms of medicine, just carry any medicines that you are on (if any) and some basic medicines like for upset stomach, headache, fever etc.

Carry some sunblock lotion with highest SPF as sub is quite harsh up there. Cold cream and lip balm would be useful as well.

Hi, previously you had suggested that I go from leh to nubra, return , then from leh to pangong. I was thinking if I can do this trip by going directly from nubra to pangong (by skipping the return to Leh) by hitchhiking. Doing this maybe then I can also go to Tso Moriri directly from pangong.
Is this feasible?

Thank You.

Vargis.Khan April 7, 2018 - 9:49 pm

Yes, if you can find a ride from Nubra to Pangong. A lot of people have started to travel on Shyok road these days so chances of finding a ride too are moderate enough.

Hello Vargis, firstly thanks, your pages have helped me get a lot of info on travelling to leh. However can you please give some info on the following. I’m planning to go solo to leh via srinagar side.
1. I’m planning the trip from May 1st to 15th. Will I miss out on anything important if i go during this time?
2. I plan to visit the Phugtal monastery also by trekking. Is it advisable to do this trek and complete the trip during this time without missing out on anything important.
3. Is it ok to get the in line permits before I even get to Leh, i.e. online?
4. Can all the necessary items be packed into one 60L travel backpack.
5. For the trip in may is a pair of thermal inners along with a jacket enough against the cold?

And Thank You Man!

Reply
Vargis.Khan March 27, 2018 - 7:57 pm

Hi Aadesh,

1. You will miss only the Manali Leh highway, nothing else.
2. You can do it but that trek itself will take at least 2 days. You just have 10 days for the entire trip so that may be a little bit of stretch over there because then you will also need at least 2 days to reach Padum and back from Kargil. So that is 4 days at least just for Phugtal Monastery.
3. Online link is just a form filling formality. You will it up online, take a print out, go to DM office Leh and get it stamped after making payment. You will have to go to the office there anyways.
4. Not sure brother, I have never owned or used a backpack.
5. Yes, carry a pair of thermals, some regular cottons and a heavy thick windproof jacket. That should do it.

Reply
Aadesh P Thomas March 28, 2018 - 1:52 pm

Thanks man. Also can you please clear these?
1. About missing the manali leh highway, what if I return by this route?
2. To and fro from phuktal monastery will take 4 days, or is it one way that will take 4 days?
3. What to do about the laundry when I’m there?

Reply
Aadesh P Thomas March 28, 2018 - 1:55 pm

Also I’m not going on a motorcycle. Considering this is the time period said above viable.

Reply
Vargis.Khan March 28, 2018 - 5:32 pm

You are welcome Aadesh. First of all, how are you traveling because everything will depend on it. You said not motorcycle so by Car or Public transport?

Reply
Aadesh P Thomas March 29, 2018 - 3:28 am

Public transport.

Vargis.Khan March 29, 2018 - 3:39 am

Then I will suggest to give up the idea of Phugtal for now and focus on Ladakh. Let Phugtal be the reason for another tip next year. Unless you want to add more days here. With 10 days this will be a bit of a problem. Your plan will pan out like this

1. Sriangar to Kargil
2. Kargil to Padum
3. Phugtal trek and return to Padum unless you want to stay there for the night
4. Padum to Kargil
5. Kargil to Leh
6. Leh, arrange permits and rest
7. Leh to Nubra valley
8. Nubra to Leh
9. Leh to Pangong
10. Pangong to Leh
11. Leh to Keylong by Bus
12. Keylong to Manali

The best you can do is to save a day by traveling from Nubra to Pangong directly but since there is no public transport on that route, you will have to hitchhike.

I have never gotten laundry done there brother, always carried enough to last 10 days but then I was either on a bike or in a car. To answer your question though, Laundries are done at hotels for an additional charge. You may want to ask about it before you check in.

Reply
Mr. Banerjee September 18, 2017 - 10:29 am

Mr. Prashant Kumar, nice to know that you are travelling to Ladakh day after tomorrow. I would prefer that you should carry some woolens as the price in Leh is way too high.
Other than woolens the following things can be handy:
here are the following things that you would be needing for the trip:

Medical Kit:

Moove/Iodex
Dettol/ Savlon
Headache Medicine
Dizziness and body pain Medicine
Disprin/Asprin
Band-aids
Medicine to suffice lack of oxygen
imodium (chk for its use)
Diamox ( chk for its use)
Stomach ache medicine

Wearable Items :

For protection from sun and UV-rays:
Goggles
Sunscreen Lotion with high SPF(30 or above)
Mustard Oil (for applying in nostrils as it can become dry and painful due to dry and cold winds of Ladakh)
Lip Balm/ vaseline
Gloves for bikers
Mufler
Caps
Water/Wind proof jacket

Other necessary stuff:

1.Torch with extra cells (NOTE: Less power in leh)

2.Swiss Knife/Knife (if u have any or u want to carry)

3.Water bottle(NOTE: Lots of water to be carried)

4.Extra bag for shopping..as Leh offers many handicraft items… ☺ (depends on ur wish)

Eatable stuff:

Carry Glucose, choclates, Nuts and other stuff which u want to carry.

NOTE: Appetite will reduce due to AMS

2. carry pickle as Ladakh food is bland

Toiletries:

Facewash/Paper Soap

Tooth brush/ Tooth paste

Wet tissue/Dry tissue (NOTE: Carry lots of tissue paper as tissues are expensive in leh)

Moisturizer / Comb

Clothes:

Jackets/Pullovers/Sweaters

Woolen socks

Light trouser/ t-shirt

(NOTE: Dress in layers as it will be easy for you to add and subtract clothes due to sudden fall and rise in temperature over there.)

Some other important stuff:

Carry your ID-card and some photocopies of it

2. Medical Insurance(if any)

3. Map of Ladhakh

4. List of important contacts on a paper as phone batteries may die there quickly.

5. Chargers of your phone

6. Extra battery if u have any for your camera as in cold env batteries die quickly.

7. Carry enough memory cards for your camera.

8. If possible 3 socket Belkin surge Protector (as there might be few charging points and we all want to charge either our phones or camera batteries)

9. Carry enough cash so that we would not end-up in wasting time in front of ATM(NOTE: Long queues in Leh in front of ATM)

Days will still be about OK, moderate enough but mornings and evening will be too cold. Do not however carry thick or all woolens though. Light woolens still that you can wear in layers with Thermals and a thick heavy windproof jacket on the top. Good cap that can cover your head and ear both and warm gloves are a must.

Yes you should be able to get Mineral water and milk everywhere in Ladakh. For veg food, take a look at the article below. South Indian specific food may be a problem but commmon dishes like Chapati, Parantha, Sabzi, Rice, Daal etc wil be available everywhere.

You do not have to buy anything specific as such. Just carry your normal cottons with a few light wooles and a thick heavy windproof jacket and you should survive the trip. Carry your regular shoes, pair of warm socks, pair of gloves, a cap to cover our head and ears; that is all

Days will be moderately warm, nights can get a little cold though. Just carry plenty of cottons that you can wear on top of one another, few light woolens and a thick heavy windproof jacket with hood, along with warm gloves and you will be OK.

HI Vargis! Thanks for this. I’m going with a group on a roadtrip – by jeeps (not bikes). So what footwear do you suggest? Are boots then necessary if there are no bikes involved? Or would sports shoes do? Thanks 🙂

Hi Sneha,

If no motorcycles then yes, you have no need to carrry boots. Sports shoes will do just fine, carry woolen socks though if you can.

Hello Vargis.
This is Pranay. Six of us are going to Ladakh on Monday i.e. 26th june, through manali in a car booked by a travel agent and we are damn underprepared both physically and mentally and also in terms of what to pack for such a tumultuous trip. Can you give some sound personal advice on how to go about it and what essentials to carry ? Because I’m scared shitless which is the reason why I’m writing on your blog to seek advice at 5.07am just 2 days before the trip while everyone else is asleep peacefully thinking they are gonna have a time of their life.
We will fly to Delhi from Kolkata, then take a bus to manali and then a car to leh via a 1 night halt at Jispa. We will try to reach Leh by 29th, weather permitting and including 1 night halts at each nubra and pangong, be back to jispa by 4th and Delhi by 6th via Manali. Would you advice doing everything so swiftly? All our bookings are done for everywhere including tents at nubra and pangong.
Thankyou

P.s. great blog you got there.

Hi Pranay – Since your question is not really specific and to give you an overview of everything will be a bit much to type. Use the “Contact Me” button from the menu, drop me an email with your phone number and let us talk over the phone. Will be better that way.

Hey Vargis,

I am Trupti. We are visiting Ladakh in July. We will be riding a bike from Delhi. Do we need to carry rainproof jackets or the winter jackets would suffice? Also, do we need to prepare physically (Though its too late to ask this now)

Hi Trupti – It is always wise to prepare for every possible situation. You may encounter rain at some places. When you are buying your winter jacket, buy one that is both wind and water proof. Buy one from Manali itself, will serve you well.

Hi Vargis,

We are total 5 and planing for leh-ladakh by car from delhi in Jun-july. Some queries i have :

1. We have 15 days starting from delhi and return. We are planing to reach leh through Manali-leh highway and return through srinagar. We want to cover zanskar and tso-moriri also. Will it be possible to cover all these places in 15 days?

2. How much expert a driver should be to drive through these terrains as only 2 of us know driving and have little experience to drive through mountains?

3. Can it be possible to cover spiti valley/Pangi/Kishtwar also, Please suggest.

Thanks in advance

Hi Vipin –

1. Yes, 15 days would be sufficient to cover both Ladakh and Zanskar.
2. You do not really have to be a super expert driver but should know how to maneuver a car through slush, water streams and quick turns. Why don’t you try to take a couple of trips to Uttarakhand, specially the road towards Gangotri from Rishikesh. Should give you some experience before you drive to Ladakh.
3. Including Spiti as well within 15 days will be a way too long journey, I would not recommend it. Spiti alone needs a good 6-7 days to cover from Shimla to Manali
