As the winter starts to fade away this year, it is also time for people to start preparing for their trips to Ladakh, myself included. Border Road Organization has started the restoration work on both the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highway. As per the latest update, BRO is hopeful to have the Srinagar-Leh highway completely open by mid April. Usually the restoration work starts early in March however due to unexpected heavy snowfall in March this year, the restoration work was delayed by several weeks. Manali Leh highway however is not expected to be declared open for civilian traffic until June. Baralacha La is the last pass to open on this road as it continues to receive snow until late May and there is always a chance of snowfall up on the summit at any time in the year.
If you are planning on travelling on the Srinagar Leh highway, a better time to plan your itinerary would be in early May. In case of Manali Leh highway, it would be best to plan in first week of July or later. This is because the roads are usually in terrible condition immediately after the road is declared open. BRO takes a couple of weeks to make the roads and bridges safe for civilian traffic and that is why it is a bad idea to commute on these roads as soon as they are open. There is also a high chance of unexpected closure of the road in its early days of opening so give it a few weeks before you plan on travelling.
