9 Days Ride to Spiti in February 2018

by Vargis.Khan

A winter trip to Spiti in February has been on my mind ever since I first visited there in January 2 years ago. At that time, though we found plenty of snow around Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda; it just was not what I had in mind. I was hoping for a valley buried deep under snow but was completely disappointed. We witnessed live snowfalls between Shimla and Narkanda; so much that it had us sit idle in our hotel for 2 complete days and delayed the trip. After that however, there was just no snow anywhere. We found a little snow at Sarahan and then at Nako but Spiti valley was just complete dry. There was nothing at all at Kaza or nearby areas.

Ever since then, I had been preparing for another ride to Spiti and this time in February; giving time for plenty of snow to heap up. The plan is for this year from 10th to 18th of February.

Luck however is still not in my favor in terms of this ride. So far, there has been now snowfall anywhere in the region, including Shimla, Sarahan, Chitkul, Nako and Kaza. As a matter of fact, entire Himalayan region this year has seen very little snow. I am in touch with my contact at Kaza and the reports are not good. Entire valley right now is dry and if this continues, it seems I will end up postponing the trip for next year.

Spiti In February 2018

For now however, the plan to visit Spiti in February remains. I will be on my Enfield accompanied with a friend of mine on his Pulsar. If anyone is interested in joining, please let me know in the comment section below; or at our Community Forum; and we can plan accordingly. Do note though that if there is no snow in the valley in February as well; this ride will get cancelled and I will plan for later in the year.

Hello Dr. Murthy – Unfortunately I had to cancel the plan. There is no snow anywhere at all this year. Entire Spiti is completely dry and deprived of snow. No point in going right now.

Hello Vijay Bhai – There will be no snow at that time at all. As a matter of fact, there is no snow right now anywhere except for Kunzum top and Rohtang Pass but that too will be long gone by June. Your only chance of finding snow at that time will be at Rohtang top.
