When is the Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley?

by Vargis.Khan

When to visit Spiti valley? This will definitely be the first question on your mind when you plan to visit a place like Spiti. This is definitely not your usual weekend getaway and a trip to Spiti means that you will have to take some time out, plan meticulously and try to make the best out of your time and money. You got to make sure that the time of your trip is the best time to visit Spiti Valley so that your trip can remain enjoyable, safe and hassle-free.

Hopefully, after reading through the article below, you will have a clear answer to this question.

The majority of the tourism to Spiti valley happens in the months of summer. However, a lot of people travel there in dead of winter as well. Contrary to common belief, Spiti valley actually remains accessible by road throughout the year.

When is the best time to visit Spiti valley depends on your preference, places you wanted to include in your itinerary and which route did you intend on taking. Several other factors like mode of travel and budget etc too come into play, but mostly it will depend on what exactly are you looking for and how you plan to travel through the valley. In this article, I will give a month by month breakdown explaining what you can expect in a particular month.

best time to visit spiti valley

The most common way of a journey to Lahaul and Spiti valleys is to complete it in form of a circuit; meaning you start from one place and exit at another. This particular circuit lies between Shimla and Manali so you can enter Spiti from either of these two places.

From Shimla: Shimla – Narkanda – Rampur – Jeori – Reckong Peo – Nako – Tabo – Dhankar – Kaza

From Manali: Manali – Rohtang Pass – Gramphoo – Batal – Losar – Kaza

Spiti valley is accessible from Shimla side throughout the year however from Manali; it is accessible only for 5 months, from June till September. So if you are planning from Shimla, from June till September, you can complete the circuit by exiting from Manali. However from late October till early May; you can only drive up to Kaza from Shimla and will have to return the same way. There is no high altitude pass between Shimla and Kaza however when it comes to Manali; you will cross two high altitude passes, Rohtang and Kunzum Pass. Both these passes remain close from anytime in October till May (depending on the weather) so a journey from Manali to Spiti valley can only be done from June till September.

Also read: How to Plan a Trip to Spiti Valley – A Complete Travel Guide

Please note that even though you can travel to Spiti from Shimla throughout the year, in peak winter the entire valley remains under a thick sheet of snow so a road journey will not be only difficult but also very challenging.

As I mentioned above, the best time to visit Spiti valley depends on what your preference is. If it is snow you are after, then the best time would be to go sometime in February or March otherwise July till September would be an ideal time to visit Lahaul & Spiti.

Spiti Valley In January

Not a good time to go at all. Winter is at its full swing and there is heavy snow all around, starting right from near Shimla until Kaza. Chances of catching a live snowfall, roads being closed and getting stranded somewhere are highest during this time. The road from Manali to Kaza remains closed at this time so the only way to get into the valley is to travel from Shimla however the road goes through some regions that experience heavy snowfall due to which it is best to avoid traveling at this time. There is not much of accommodation options available too in January.

Spiti Valley in  February & March

If it is snow that you are after, then the best time would be to go from sometime mid Feb till March. There is a high chance of catching snow near Shimla, Narkanda, Kufri, Sarahan, Nako and Kaza at this time. Please do carefully plan your accommodation though because this is not really the tourist season and most of the hotels at this time remain closed.

Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

Spiti Valley In April & May

Snow starts to melt away by Late March or early April. Hotels and guest houses too start to open up by this time however tourists are still few in numbers. If it is solitude you seek with not a lot of people around, then this is the best time to go. Chances of catching snow will be very less however the weather will still be extremely cold. Accommodation will still be limited and you will not be able to complete the circuit as well. You can hope to find whatever is left of the snow in the months of April and May but it is also the time when roads are in worst condition.

Spiti Valley In June till September

The complete Spiti circuit remains open at this time. You can start your journey from Shimla and end at Manali or vice versa. While Spiti does not experience much rain, almost next to none for that matter; roads leading to the valley can still close due to landslides in monsoon. Kunzum pass opens in late June and it takes some time for BRO and PWD to improve the road conditions from Kokhsar till Kaza. The entire patch from Kokhsar to Kunzum, especially till Batal is a nightmare to drive on. Add monsoon to this and you will get the idea.

Landslides often occur in this region and you may have to wait for a few hours for the road to reopen and turn back and return the next day. Road from Shimla however does not have that large of a risk of closing down, even though it is equally bad. But even after all this, you can still comfortably complete the journey and enjoy the valley.

Also read: Spiti Valley Route Guide

Chandratal is open during this time so you can add that too to your itinerary. Hotels are all fully functional so finding accommodation would be child’s play. If travelling in June or early July, your trip will pretty much be event-less. However, monsoon would have arrived around Shimla and Kinnaur valley by late July bringing in chances of landslides along with it. Best to keep a couple of days as buffer while planning your itinerary in July or August. By September, monsoon would have gone and the valley would be colorful all around which makes it an ideal time to be travelling here. Temperature however would start to dip by late September or early October; so ensure that you are carrying heavy woolens at this time. During September, Kunzum and Rohtang too remain open so you can complete the circuit as well.

Spiti Valley In October till December

A trip to Spiti gets one sided during this time because Kunzum pass remains closed till June. You can start from Shimla, travel till Kaza and return taking the same road back.. The region starts to receive snowfall sometime in late December so until then; it will just be cold winds that you will experience which makes it a bad time to be travelling to Spiti. Most of the hotels are in the process of closing down in October so choice of accommodation is just a few hotels and guest houses still operational.

Best time to visit Spiti Valley by road

From June till September is probably the best time to visit Spiti by road. This way you will be able to complete the circuit and will not be limited to just visiting from Shimla to Kaza.  Places like Chandratal and Kunzum Pass are also accessible during this time only.

Also read: An Ideal Itinerary for Spiti Valley

Best time to visit Spiti Valley for photography

This will depend on what exactly you like to shoot. If a valley covered under a thick sheet of snow is on your mind, then you must go in January or February. For lush green hills, you must visit in August. If the colors of autumn interest you, then plan it by late September or early October.

Best time to visit Spiti Valley on a Budget

If you are on a budget, you must plan your trip between June and September when it is the peak tourist season. All the hotels are operational during this time and you will easily be able to find a budget accommodation. You will also not have any trouble at all finding public transport services during this time.

Best time to visit Spiti Valley on Bike

The months of April, May, June and September would be best to visit Spiti valley on Bike. From January till March, the weather will be cold with chances of snowfall and black ice on the road which is not really an ideal situation to be riding around on a bike. Some people do make a winter ride to Spiti but not everyone can do that without getting hurt. July and August would bring the season of monsoon with chances of rain, landslides and slush which again is not ideal for a bike ride. From October to December, you can indeed ride to Spiti valley but the weather would then be cold. These three months in my opinion are worst time to be going to Spiti valley. There will not be much greenery anywhere on the route; there will be no snow as well and you will just be riding through cold winds and an overall dull landscape.

Best time to visit Spiti Valley

So if a safe, uneventful trip, lush green hills and colors of Spiti is on your mind; then June, early July and September is the best time to visit Spiti Valley. If you are feeling adventurous and heavy snow is what you want to see, then Feb & March is the best month to go. Please do keep in mind that life in Spiti in winter is really not that easy. Water freezes everywhere including in pipes and taps; which means there will be no running water and you will have to depend on water in buckets.

I hope this information on best time to visit Spiti valley was helpful. If you have any further questions; please feel free to ask in the comments section below; or at our Community Forum; and I will be glad to answer.

Yes, you can go Bhai. Just be very careful on the Kaza-Manali road

Reply
Prateek Maheshwari July 10, 2021 - 10:03 am

once again thanks a lot bhai ji .
190 mm GC is good enough to clear all water crossings ? is there any chance of water enters in the engine ?
We will leave chandrataal lake by 27th july .
Can you please suggest which is best time to cross the most dangerous water crossing. Is it morning ?

Thanks a lot bhai ji

Reply
Vargis.Khan July 12, 2021 - 9:50 pm

Water will not enter the engine Bhai, there is no risk of that. Start early in the morning so that the water level is low.

There is a lot of news of rains and landslides right now in Himachal right now.

Hi Harry,

1. Yes but you will have to go via SHimla and come back the same route. Manali route cannot be covered
2. Shimla route is your only option
3. Delhi – Narkanda – Sarahan – Chitkul – Nako – Kaza – Kalpa – Shimla/Chail – Delhi
4. It depends but abt 35-40k at least.

– to come to manali by bus then will go to rohtang and will come back to manali and will do stay. Is there anu possibility of staying near to rohtang instead of coming back to Manali.
– then next day we will go to spiti valley which will be 5 hours approx from manali. Now we have 2 days for spiti. I do not know what else we can do? Please guide on places which we can cover.
– lastly we thought to come back through same route of manali one instead of shimla ( as it is longer than manali). Guide what should be done?

Lastly final aim to reach to delhi by 5 day morning.

Also let us know regarding network avilability thought out the route and specially in spiti valley as we may have to work on the same.

In case you can assist in giving any kind of booking related to abovementioned trip, we would like to avail them.

1. You can plan in November but it won’t really be the best time to go.
2. Snow – No
3. Difficulty – It will be very cold and that will beccome your biggest challenge.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Just have 2 questions in this case:
1. Would you still recommend the trip to spiti at this time in November? Would there be enough for sight seeing or would it just be barren and extremely cold?
2. Any other places in Himachal that would have snow at this time ?

Thanks,
Deepak

Vargis.Khan August 29, 2018 - 12:12 pm

November is not really a good time to be heading to Spiti. Vistas will be very dull and the weather very cold. There is no place that receives snow by November and the ones that do remain closed like Rohtang. You can try flying to Ladakh though. Chances of catching a snowfall there are high.

Hi Manisha,

1. Narkanda to Kalpa – 6 yo 7 hours by Bus
2. Not much to see there actually. Take a look at this post. This should answer your questions about Kalpa.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/kalpa/

3. Peo to Tabo 6-7 hours. From Tabo you will have to go to Attargo and take a bus from there for Mudh. Find a bus, shared cab or hitchike to attargo.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/plan-trip-pin-valley-spiti/

4. Mudh to Kaza – 3 hours tops

5. Stay at Hotel Spiti Valley in Kaza, opposite Kaza Monastery. The guy there is Tanzin Rabgay and he is a friend of mine. Give my reference and he will gladly arrange a cab for you to visit Chandratal. His number is 9418927312

Hey, I’ve been reading your blogs about Spiti since past few days. I’m planning Spiti via Kinnaur and then back from Rohtang/Manali. But the time I’ve chosen is mid october and i’m worried if Kunzum pass would be open then or no. I will be travelling through public transport only. Also this is going to be a solo trip. So the route and weather would be okay or you think I should reschedule?

Reply
Vargis.Khan August 10, 2018 - 8:30 pm

It all depends on how the weather trends in September. Too early to predict right now. Usually Kunzum Pass remains open until Mid October but Bus service may not be available.

I am planning to join a travel group for 10 days road trip to spiti following the complete circuit. Considering the monsoon conditions this month, are there any chances of landslides or getting stuck in the route due to mud and rains. Any advice?

Water level will be high in all nallahs across the route since Monsoon would have just passed. Weather during day will be pleasant but nights will still be cold.

Me and my friends are travelling to Spiti in the month of july 2018 from 22nd to 28th. I would like to know what will be the condition of the road and weather at this time and it will be safe travelling in tempo traveller. We are wanted to cover entire circuit.

Roads in spiti are always bad and it will also be raining. Your safety really depends on who is driving the tempo traveler. Hire a good experienced driver and you will be OK.

Hi Vargis,

I am planning to visit spiti via manali on AUg 31 and then will return back via sangla/shimla as I am going to attend flower festival in rakcham and will stay their one day and one for chitkul. I wanted to know total number of 7 days will be enough as i will be travelling from delhi or we need more days. Also, is this the best time to visit in terms of weather conditions etc. Also, the route from manali to spiti will be open?

Reply
Vargis.Khan July 11, 2018 - 1:17 pm

Hi Himani – If you are planning to stay a couple of days in Sangla valley then I will recommend adding more days otherwise the journey will be rushed.

Reply

And yes, the Manali route will remain open unless there is any landslides anywhere caused by rain.

What about the climatic condition.

Reply
Vargis.Khan June 28, 2018 - 2:49 pm

Yes you can but keep your child well protected against cold and sun. Spiti valley is always cold and temperature at some places will go close to zero even in July

Reply
Hrithik Gupta June 28, 2018 - 7:19 pm

Will there be any issues beacause of altitude and what would you suggest what should be my last point if altitude is a problem for kid.
Should I take 2 days of stay in kaza.
Or 1 day in kaza and 1 day in langza.
How much is the difference between altitude of spiti and Komic/langza.

Reply
Vargis.Khan June 29, 2018 - 1:38 am

I do not think altitude will be a problem if you go via Shimla. Take the journey slow, give at least 3 days between Shimla and Kaza and you should be OK.

Hi Aanchal – Early July is OK for the trip. There is a chance of rain but that will only increase more in July and August. A TUV is definitely capable of the trip but you husband too would have to be a bit experienced in terms of driving in hilly region and handling bad roads.

DAY 1
Drive from Manali – Rohtang Pass – Kunzum La – Losar – Kaza. Overnight in a Kaza Hotel.
DAY 2
Drive from Kaza – Langza – Hikkim – Komik – Ki Monastery – Kibber – Gette – Kaza. Overnight in a Kaza hotel.
DAY 3
Drive from Kaza to Pin Valley – Kungri – Mudh – Kaza. Overnight in a Kaza Hotel.
DAY 4
Drive from Kaza to Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake Trek – Lhalung. Overnight in a Lhalung Homestay.
DAY 5
Drive from Lhalung to Losar – Kunzum La – Chandratal Lake. Overnight in Camps near Chandratal Lake.
DAY 6
Drive from Chandratal Lake to Rohtang Pass – Manali
DAY 7
Check Out of Manali inclusive of food / accomodation and an Innova, apparently it is coming to around 14k per head.does this seem worth the price ? Sorry for the trouble, TIA

There will be some snow at the side of the road as you climb up Rohtang and Kunzum Pass but that will be it.

Hi Vargis,

Great articles on your blog.
I have a query regarding my spiti solo bike trip(first). I will be reaching Narkanda on 13th of May evening. I am planning to do camping wherever possible (I went through that article of your blog ) . Can I complete the entire circuit with current weather condition there (will it be safe enough considering road condition ) . I have11 days for this trip.

Shall I stay at Kaza or stay at one of villages in langza, koumik, hikkim ?

What about washroom options if we go for camping at places as you mentioned in one of your articles ?

Approximate budget I can think of considering the above plans ?

Reply
Vargis.Khan May 3, 2018 - 6:58 pm

Hi Mayank – Kaza will be better to stay in my opinion. Just make a day trip to the villages and return to Kaza by evening. Hard to tell right now whether or not the Kaza route will open in May but if it doesnt, you will have to come back via Shimla only. For 11 days solo ride by Bike, I will say keep a budget of about 17k. Take a look at this article.

2. I do not have any bike rental contact in Chandigarh, sorry. I can provide you one in Manali though and you can talk to him. Maybe he will be able to direct you to someone reliable. Let me know.
3. If budget is not a problem, then definitely go for a solo ride on 350CC. It will be much easier and better this way.

The road is open. Google just shows the road as closed but that is incorrect. It will take you a minimum of 2 days from Shimla to Kaza, 3-4 days is recommended time frame. How long you want to stay at Kaza will depend on how much time you have in hand but try to stay there for a day at least.

Manali Leh route opens sometime in early June so yes, I would recommend that you start from Shimla. You can definitely bring her but make sure that you take the journey slow. Start from Shimla and give it at least 4 days in between before you make it to Kaza. That way her body will get plenty of time to acclimatize. Keep her well covered and protected from harsh sun and cold, hydrated, and keep an eye out for any behavior where she may seem a bit uneasy. A lot of people have done the trip with kids of that age and you should be OK. Taking the journey slow and allowing her body plenty of time to adjust to the height is the key here. Maximum altitude you will gain will be at Kunzum Pass, 4590 meters and this is why you must start from Shimla side and not Manali.

With 7 days in hand, you will have to give up Manali, even Spiti will be a bit hectic. In March, you can travel in the following manner.

Day 1 – Delhi to Shimla
Day 2 – Shimla to Sarahan
Day 3 – Sarahan to Nako
Day 4 – Nako to Kaza
Day 5 – Kaza to Reckong Peo / Kalpa
Day 6 – Reckong Peo / Kalpa to Shimla
Day 7 – Shimla to Delhi

Manali – Kaza road is closed until June so that cannot be included

Yes you will find plenty of snow in March. Until Reckong Peo / Kalpa, you should be able to find a hotel easily however after that until Kaza, it would be best to call in advance and book your stay.

Hello Vargis,

Planning a trip to Spiti next year with my wife and kid who will be 7 years old. Based on your blog and given that my kid will have summer vacations till 15th June, we would want to go in the first two weeks of June. However, I wanted to understand whether early June will the time for heavy tourist inflow in Spiti. If that is the case, will September be better than June? Also, will there by difference in road conditions between the two months.

We will be using the Shimla axis only.

Thanks
Ravi

Reply
Vargis.Khan October 16, 2017 - 4:58 pm

Hello Ravi – If you are planning to cover the Shimla route only then June will be a good time to go. Tourist inflow increases post June mid so first two weeks will be OK from that aspect as well.

Reply
Ravi Birhman October 17, 2017 - 7:54 am

Thanks Vargis. On road conditions, will June be better or September? Asking since June is after the ice melts while September is post monsoons.

Reply
Vargis.Khan October 17, 2017 - 2:46 pm

From Shimla side, it will pretty much be the same until Kaza. Between Kaza and Manali however, it will be somewhat better in September. Please note that when I say better, I mean less treacherous. It will still be a nightmare to drive on though.

Kindly suggest us the itinerary so that we can explore more places.

Vargis.Khan October 9, 2017 - 4:23 pm

Hi Durgesh – Assuming that you will reach Shimla from Dharamshala, Spiti can be planned as below.

Shimla to Sarahan
Sarahan to Chitkul
Chitkul to Nako
Nako to Kaza
Kaza to Kibber, Kaumik, Langza to Kaza
Kaza to Mud Village (Pin Valley)
Mud Village to Tabo
Tabo to Kalpa
Kalpa to Narkanda

Return journey from Narkanda. If you have additional days, you can use those at any place of your liking.

Hi Abhinav – Please plan towards mid of September, it will be better. For house stays, go to Kibber, Komik, Langza or Hikkim from Kaza and talk to the villagers about letting you stay for a night. No towing service in Spiti anywhere so better prepare your bike accordingly. Take a look at this article.

Looking forward for your reply. Thanks a lot in advance.

Reply
Vargis.Khan August 28, 2017 - 2:18 pm

Hello Mannish – I am guessing it will be OK but it all depends on the weather in the end. If it snows early than Kunzum Pass will get blocked but in initial days it is usually temporary. Camps will remain available at Chandratal until October 10th so you may have trouble finding a place to stay there if you arrived on 15th.

Hello Supriyo,

Yes it is safe to travel at this time. Chances of finding snow at this time are next to none, you may see some at Rohtang Top or Kunzum top but nowhere else. Regarding your mother, if there is no medical condition then it should be OK for her to travel but I would still strongly advise to take a doctor’s opinion. Just take the trip slow. Plan your itinerary in a way that you do not travel anymore than 5-6 hours a day or else it may become too stressful for her considering the bad roads in Spiti.

Is it fine as per your experiences. we are Six people, in an XUV and a Bullet Classic 500 cc bike.
Any suggestions will be welcome.

Hello Prof. Dhanoa, Your itinerary is great, I wouldn’t change a thing. Be prepared for some extremely damaged and difficult road between Kaza and Manali though. You will reach Rohtang after noon so also be prepared for encountering some heavy traffic there.

Hi Ranjit – How many days do you have in and? Let me know and I can help with an itinerary. Snow will be a bit tough to find at that time. Take a look at the article below for traveling to high altitude places with children.

Road condition is bad in what terms is it narrow or it has potholes and patches all the way .

Can you tell me approx distance in kms for which the road is bad ?

Bad in terms of

1. barely wide enough for one car between Kunzum Pass and Chandratal – 15 kms
2. Nightmarish ride or drive through numerous water crossings, potholes, lose stones on the road between Gramphoo and Batal – 60 kms
3. Dirt roads prone to landslides between Reckong Peo and Pooh 70 kilometers

Throughout the ride it is a mix of bad and good roads, sometimes super smooth and sometimes broken with lot of potholes. Hard to point out specific areas as conditions continue to change however the above three are the most problematic.

Road conditions are always bad in Spiti so do not expect any better in October as well. It is however a good time to travel to Spiti.

Hi Rathore Bhai – Mid June or Mid September would be better. Avoid going around Mid July or Mid August as you will have to travel through monsoon and resulting landslides and slush.

Hello Minnu – Road conditions in Spiti are always bad for most part of the journey so be mentally prepared for this. Since you are travelling late in May, this would be an ideal time to go.
