deoria tal

There is really no exact answer to when you should visit a place because it depends on a lot of factors; like what your preference is, mode of travel, any budget constraints, etc. With that being said, there is always a certain period of time when every tourist destination gets the majority of its share of tourists. Weather usually is the dominant factor that drives this but there could be a few other reasons too. The same rule applies when we talk about the best time to visit Deoria Tal as well.

Please note that in this article, I will only be talking about the best time to visit Deoria Tal. For other details like how to reach, the best time to visit, where to stay and what else to see, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Deoria Tal.

About Deoria Tal

For a brief introduction, Deoria Tal (also pronounced as Devaria or Deoriya) is a lake about 3 km from the villages of Mastura and Sari; on the Ukhimath-Chopta road in Uttarakhand. At an altitude of 2,438 meters (7,999 ft), it has heavily wooded, lush green surroundings with snow-covered mountains (Chaukhamba is one of them) in the backdrop.  (Wikipedia).

This lake in recent years has come up as a favorite among people looking to make a quick trekking or camping trip without going far too remote. Due to its accessibility by road and 3 kilometers long easy climb, it attracts tourists throughout the year, including the months of winter as well.

A trip to Deoria Tal means that you will definitely have to trek. The road ends at about 3 kilometers before the lake at Sari village. The rest of the distance must be covered on foot. The trek, though not too challenging, involves climbing uphill all the way and it can get a bit steep at some places. Your stay here too will be in a campsite so if you are not into trekking or camping then you should avoid a trip here entirely.

Best Season to Visit Deoria Tal

Deoria Tal presents a different color in each season and the best time to be here will depend on what you were looking for. If a semi-frozen lake surrounded with snow all around was on your mind then the month of February will be best. You can get snow in January as well but the amount of snow on the ground will be more in February after all the snowfall in the season so far.

But at the same time, the temperature in these months will be really low, close to zero degrees. So if you are someone who is not too fond of cold weather then you should definitely avoid a winter trip to Deoria Tal.

From April till June is considered a good time to visit Deoria Tal. In these months as well, May is thought to be the best. There won’t be any snow around but you will have fun trekking and camping. The weather will be very pleasant, with days being moderately warm. Nights will get a bit cold but not too much.

The months of monsoon, July, and August that will be, is not an ideal time to travel to this region. This entire area is prone to landslides and rains really wreak havoc here. Chances of landslides and roadblocks remain high during the monsoon season in Uttarakhand. Trekking and camping too in monsoon will be very difficult.

September is probably the best month to visit Deoria Tal. Monsoon will be gone but the vistas and valleys would still be full of colors. If you want to see the Orange of the Autumn then October can be a good time.

The months of November and early December will really be a bad time overall with cold weather, no snow, and really dull and dry scenery.

Deoria Tal in January

Deoria Tal remains covered in snow in January with high chances of heavy snowfall. Temperature ranges between -10 Degrees Celsius at night to 10 Degrees Celsius During Day. If planning a trip at this time, you should carry heavy woolen clothes and a pair of boots that can be used in snow as well. Driving to Sari village too at this time can get tricky with snow-covered and slippery roads.

Deoria Tal in February

Conditions and temperature in February remain the same as the previous month. The only difference is that the snow on the ground will be more after all the snowfall throughout the month of January. It is considered the best time for a winter trek to Deroia Tal. Places like Chopta, Tungnath, and Chandrashila will remain off-limit in both January and February.

Deoria Tal in March

The temperature at this time will be extremely cold but a bit better than January and February. The minimum temperature will fluctuate between 0 to -5 Degrees Celsius at night. The maximum temperature during the day will rise up to 15 Degrees Celsius. If you were traveling towards the end of March, you may be able to reach Chopta and Tungnath temple.

Deoria Tal in April

April can be a good time for a trip to Deoria Tal. The weather will still be very cold with temperatures ranging between 2 Degrees to 15 Degrees Celsius but the days at this time are very pleasant and clear. The view of snow-covered mountains all around too will be stunning.

If you went in early April, there is a high chance that you may find some snow on the ground still; and may even catch a live snowfall if you were lucky. Please note that the temperature at night can go below 2 Degrees as well so pack accordingly.

Deoria Tal in May

May and the following month of June are usually considered as the best time to visit Deoria Tal. The temperature will range between 4 Degrees to 20 Degrees Celsius. Days will be clear, pleasant, and moderately warm. You must however still carry light woolens because it will still get a bit cold during the night.

Along with the lake, you will also be able to plan a trip to Chopta, Tungnath, and Chandrashila. The only downside is that the views will be a little dry and featureless in May.

Deoria Tal in June

June is another great month to visit Deoria Tal. The average temperature will fluctuate between a minimum of 5 Degrees Celsius at night to 25 Degrees Celsius during the day. Carrying light woolens is still advised at this time. Towards the middle and end of the month, Deoria Tal and the nearby region may receive a pre-monsoon rainfall so please be prepared. Remember the floods of Kedarnath? That happened in the month of June.

Deoria Tal in July

July and August are the months of Monsoon. This is not usually said to be a good time to be in the hills. I personally prefer traveling at this time though because, in my opinion, this is the time when hills and valleys come alive with flora and fauna.

The month of July is definitely worth visiting Deoria Tal if you don’t mind the rain. The carpet of green covering the meadows all around is bound to allure you. The minimum temperature in July will be 6 Degrees and the maximum at 23 Degrees Celsius.

Deoria Tal in August

All that I mentioned about traveling to Deoria Tal during monsoon would remain applicable in August as well. The scenic beauty of the region at this time will be at its best. It is going to be green everywhere with flowers of different colors blooming all over the valley.

With that being said, please be warned that the rain can wreak havoc in these areas during monsoon. Sometimes it can rain non-stop; so much that it can cause massive landslides blocking the roads and trapping you indoors. You should definitely check the weather forecast before visiting the lake in either July or August.

The temperature will range between a minimum of 6 to a maximum of 23 Degrees Celsius.

Deoria Tal in September

This in my opinion is the best time to visit Deoria Tal in the entire year. Monsoon would be long gone but all the green would still remain. The beauty of lush meadows, blooming flowers, and dense forest is at its peak in September. You get everything that the monsoon has to offer without having to encounter the monsoon.

Days will be pleasant and clear but nights will start to get very cold. The temperature will range between a minimum of 4 Degrees Celsius at night to a maximum of 19 Degrees Celsius during Day.

Deoria Tal in October

Autumn arrives in October in the valley. It is a good time if you want to see the orange color in trees all around. Weather will be an amalgamation of cloudy and sunny days mostly. The cold will start to settle in during this time and the temperature will get close to 0 Degrees Celsius at night. Days will still be pleasantly warm at 17 Degrees maximum.

Deoria Tal in November

November is not a good month to visit Deoria Tal in my opinion. The scenic beauty of the region fades away a bit at this time and vistas become dull and dry. It will get freezing cold but there will be no snow. The temperature will range between -3 Degrees minimum to 16 Degrees maximum.

Deoria Tal in December

It is officially the winter season now and you must bring heavy woolens for a trip at this time. The average minimum temperature at night will be around – 5 Degrees Celsius. Days will be at a maximum of 12 Degrees Celsius with cold and freezing winds throughout the day. If you were traveling towards the end of December; then chances are that you may even catch a light snowfall if you were lucky.

Best time to visit Deoria Tal

Now based on the information above, I believe it is safe to say that the months of February, May, and September are the best time to visit Deoria Tal. February if you want to see a snow-covered lake, May if you are into trekking and camping, and September if you want to see a lush green landscape.

If traveling with family, you should visit in May or June. For a budget trip, July, August, and November will be a good time. But July and August are also the most unsafe months to be in the region.

If you also want to trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila, May and October will be the best months.
