6 Reasons to Travel to Ladakh in September

by Vargis.Khan

ladakh in september

September is often considered to be the best month to plan a trip to Ladakh and quite rightly so. While every month has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, there are several things that will make a trip to Ladakh in September much more pleasurable than any other month, irrespective of whether you were coming by road or catching a flight to Leh.

Gone are the days when tourism in Ladakh was limited to just the months of June to September. Now people continue to visit here all year long and the tourist season starts as early as April and lasts as late as October end.

But when you talk about a time when the weather is enjoyable, roads are perfect, locals are celebrating, the landscape is colorful and there aren’t too many people around, that is when September comes out as a winner.

6 Reasons to Travel to Ladakh in September

Below are 6 reasons why traveling to Ladakh in September is actually a very good idea. If you want to read further about how can you plan your trip, take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Ladah –  A Complete Travel Guide.

Open Roads

This is the biggest advantage that the month of September has. During this time, all roads to and within Ladakh remain open. You can travel to any part of Ladakh and explore as much as you want.

Even the high altitude passes are all approachable and chances of you getting stuck in a certain area are minimal. I agree that there are other months as well when the roads remain open but read on further to understand why I mentioned this as the biggest advantage for September.

Road Conditions

The highways and internal routes are open in June, July, and August as well. But the condition of the roads is best during September. Already past a few months in the tourist season, BRO by September would have completed the restoration work and brought the roads to a near-perfect condition.

In the months of May and June, the condition of roads is mostly bad as they have just been declared open. They will be broken at several places with numerous water streams due to melting snow. July and August are the time of Monsoon which can really play havoc up in the Himalayas.

On the other hand, there is a minimal chance of rain in September. Snow also would have stopped melting again as the winter now approaches. You will find plenty of fresh inviting tarmac laid on the roads.

Spectacular Landscape

Get ready to be spell-bounded by unreal vistas all around. Monsoon would be gone but only after leaving behind plenty of greenery in the valleys of Kashmir and Lahaul. The vistas you will get to see will be like a view straight out of heaven.

The mountains will look as if they have just been washed clean. You will witness the lush of the green on the way and be humbled by the beauty of the brown in the deserts of Ladakh.

It’s also the start of autumn and will be in for a treat. Snow starts to settle at top of the peaks, blanketing them and giving life to the barren brown landscape; and thus offering a unique contrast of desert and snow.

Lesser Tourists

Everyone has their own reason to go to Ladakh. But the majority of the people visit because of the sense of adventure and to experience the remoteness of the region. June, July and August see an influx of tourism which can undermine the majesty of remoteness though.

September however, more or less, marks the end of the tourist season in Ladakh. Most of the people who had Ladakh as part of their yearly plan would have already visited here.

You won’t find many people either in Leh or in other parts of Ladakh as well as compared to what you will come across in earlier months. If you want to be away from the crowd, spend some time in solitude, then September is the month you should opt for.

Favorable Weather

This is also related to the point that I mentioned above. October will mean even lesser number of tourists as compared to September. But by then, the weather will be terribly cold with a high chance of snowfall all across Ladakh.

Manali Leh highway may get closed anytime in October. As most of the tourism-dependent businesses start to wrap up, chances of finding accommodation and other facilities may also be a challenge.

September however will mean fewer tourists with favorable weather conditions. It is also not just limited to Ladakh but also in the region that you will be traveling through to get here. The days will not be as warm as they were in June and July. Nights on the other hand will not be that cold as they would be in coming months.

Snowfall

Yes, I am adding this as a pros here for September. By Mid September, all the high altitude passes start to witness snowfall. Chances are that if you are in Ladakh in September, you will definitely come across snowfall at either Khardung La or Chang La.

So if would like to add some snow to your Ladakh experience without the risks involved in October and November, then September is the month you should plan your trip in.

Ladakh Festival

This actually is the 7th and an added bonus of visiting Ladakh in September. Ladakh festival is one of the biggest festivals of Ladakh. It is held in the month of September and lasts for two weeks.

People from all over the region gather in Leh to display an amazing and colorful cultural diversity. The event is marked with a host of cultural programs, impressive masked dance performances, colorful robes and ends with matches of Polo at Polo ground in Leh. Attending this festival truly gives a feel of Ladakh.

Ladakh in September – Conclusion

The only word of caution that I would advise about traveling to Ladakh in September is that you should try to plan it either towards or mid of September. Avoid traveling by late September as far as you can. Also, carry an additional layer of warm clothes than what you would have packed for July and August. For more details, read Clothes for Ladakh Trip, What to Pack.

I hope the information above on traveling to Ladakh in September was of help. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below or at our Community Forum, and I will be happy to answer.

Hi Vargis,
I’m allergic to gluten and I’m planning a tript to ladakh in September end. So i want to understand from you what are the gluten free food options available through leh city, pangong and nubfa valley. Also is rice easily available through the camp halts across pang or any remote remote areas on manali leh highway

It was because of Corona Rahul Bhai but a lot of tourists are already there in Ladakh. September is a good time to go as long as you take all the precautions

Hi Manish,

I am from thane and planning a trip approximately on same dates (1-2 days here and there maybe) with my parents. We will be driving out from here. Number of days and itinerary would depend on how you plan to visit Ladakh. Will you drive from Mumbai or fly to Delhi or Leh and continue journey via hired car there?

The dates are good. But still make sure to check the local weather and Covid conditions few days before.

Hey Vargis,

First of all let me thank you for that lovely and informative blog. Quite helpful for a first time traveller.
We are about to visit Leh from 14-21st September’19
We are a family of three adults including my mother, 65yrs old.
I have a few queries, would be great if you can address them.
We have planned to do spot booking of hotels after checking the accommodation. For the first day in Leh we might book it online. Please suggest if that is viable as this would not be the peak season as you mentioned in the blog.

We plan to go ahead with local tour operators for transfer and trying to get quotes for a private vehicle which we can keep throughout. Please suggest if you know any.

As mentioned in your other blog we do not have BSNL postpaid but have vodaphone and Jio postpaid connections but not sure how much it would be useful. Are there telephone booths available at different parts of ladakh ?

Is there anything in Particular you would suggest as my mother ,a senior citizen is travelling with us.

Our itinerary looks like this
Day 1 :(14 Sep.2019 ) Arrival at Leh Airport Pickup -Same day half day Leh city tour .

Day 02: (15 Sep.2019 ) Leh – Shey – Thiksey – Hemis – Leh

Day 03 –(16 Sep.2019 ) Leh to Nubra Valley Via Khardung La Situated At 18,390 Ft. ( 120 Km / 5 Hrs. )
Overnight Stay at the Camp or Hotel.

Day 04 –(17 Sep.2019 ) Hunder to Turtuk to Hunder ( 82 km /3 Hrs One Way )
After visting we drive back to our camp or Hotel in Nubra for Overnight stay.

Day 05 – (18 Sep.2019 )   Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake ( 170 km / 7 Hrs. )
Camp/Hotel Near Pangong lake . Dinner & Overnight at the Hotel in Pangong.

Day 06 (19 Sep.2019 )  :Pangong Lake to Leh Via Changla ( 140 km / 6 Hrs. )
Dinner and overnight in Leh

Day 07 –(20 Sep.2019 ) Leh-Local to Sham Valley Day Excursion ( 50 km / 03 Hrs. )
Stay overnight at the hotel Leh.

Day 08 –(21 Sep.2019 )  Depart Leh
After breakfast its time to check-out of our hotel will be transferred to the Leh Airport for flight back home.

Awaiting you valuable feedback on the itinerary as well.

Hey Vargis, hope u r good, u know about the current situation in country, so we are planning a trip in September, we are 5-6 friends, as u know we don’t need to spend that much on living expenses there, so can u plz suggest us how do we proceed with our plan? Should we take packaages or go with our own itinerary, since Flights are quite cheaper right now around 4-5k only, & packages are available for 35-40k atleast, whats Ur view on it?
& how many days do we need to explore all famous locations, should we stay at one place say leh & explore all the locations from there or should we take accommodation at other places as required?
Please guide us as none of us have been to ladakh before.
Thanks

I will be landing in Leh on 20th noon and the remaining internal travel I plan to rent a bike and do it. Have just finished with all stay bookings so now I need to address the Biking route, precautions, must carry bit.
Will be travelling solo for the entire trip and don’t want to rush any bit. I might take a break in journey on my way from Nubra to Korzok at Karu.
Would you please guide me a bit on my itinerary and if there are any special precautions and routes i need to stick to.

Hi Vargis,

First of all, your blog is very helpful and I appreciate your patience in responding to each of our queries.

We are a couple and have only few days to explore leh. We can reach there by 14th early morning and should catch our return flight on 18th. I had been to leh before during peak winter and been to Chadar trek and explored a very little around leh town because of heavy snow. Could you please an itenerary for these days, cost of a commutation. Also please suggest if it is good idea to hire a bike as I am worried about breakdown on the first trip with partner 😛 If it is good idea, how much would it cost to hire a bike?

Thanks 🙂

Vargis.Khan September 11, 2018 - 11:56 am

Hi Sudhir – Yes, bike would a good choice unless you are ready to pay even a greater amount for a private taxi. Since you have limited time in hand, I will recommend a bike for ease of commute. You can explore like this.

14 – Rest and arrange permits
15 – Day ride to Nubra and back to Leh
16 – Day ride to Pangong and back to Leh
17 – Day ride until Lamayuru and back to Leh
18 – Fly Out

Bhai Diamox is a precaution and not a cure. Once you start suffering from AMS, it will not do anything at all. So as a precaution, take a tablet early in the morning. Even before you catch your flight to Ladakh.

Hello Vargis,

Myself and my wife(as pillion) planning a 16 days bike trip starting from Deheradun – 2 days in Uttrakand – Narkand – Kaza – Keylong – Udaipur – Sri nagar – Leh – Manali

Can you please answer the following questions?
1) Does number of days would be enough
2) Our expectation is to witness at least snow capped mountains if not witnessing or enjoying mild snow.
3) How safe it is to drive along woman being not accompanied by big group.
4) I own RE Thunderbird 350 and planning to transport it to Deheradun, does it sound good? Or would you prefer me to rent bike?

Based on your inputs I can go ahead and alter my current plan. I was reading all other comments and it was supper helpful. keep up good work, thanks in advance.

Vargis.Khan August 11, 2018 - 9:21 pm

Hi Elango,

1. It is doable but would be better if you could add more days. Can you?
2. You may find some snow at top of the passes.
3. Quite safe. I haven’t heard of any incidents so far.
4. Yes RE Thunderbird is good as long as it is well serviced and in good condition.

Hi Rajendra – No it is not necessary and to be honest, it hasn’t been of much help in my case. When AMS happens, it just happens and you got to give it time for your body to acclimatize. Take a look at this post.

Hey Vargis..wanted to ask a few questions

We are visiting leh on 16th September (for 5days)
1.How is the weather gonna be at that time? & what clothes should we carry?

2. We are a group of 5 ppl including my parents who are 50 above..is it OK for dem to visit such high altitude ?

3.Should be book a innova for ourselves from Leh or should go in the 16 sitter Tempo traveller with the group of our travel agent?

Thanks!!

Reply
Vargis.Khan July 22, 2018 - 6:53 pm

Hi Prankul,

Later september will be cold so carry some good woolens, thermals and a heavy windproof jacket. Unless there is a medical ailment involved, your parents should be OK to travel. Do visit a doctor though to get a professional opinion. If budget is not a problem then book an Innova for yourself. Don’t go with any travel agents.

If you have and can spare days days for the trip then add Tso Moriri else go to Pangong. Both lakes are equally beautiful. Moriri is a bit less crowded than Pangong, that is all.

Hi Abhay,

1. Will Sep be extremely cold – Not really. You will still be able to manage. Days will be pleasant but yes, temperature at night will start to drop. By Sep mid it starts to snow at high altitude passes so driving at night is not really advised.
2. Monsoon – Will be long gone by Sep

Hello Vargis,

My friend and I (both girls) are planning a trip to Leh during September 8 to September 17. The places we want to visit are Leh, Nubra valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri. We would be flying down to Leh from Bangalore.

As it is two girls travelling alone, we are worried about how to book this trip. As we are on a budget, we are not sure if it would be costly if we book it ourselves.

a) Would you suggest booking through a group tour offered by various travel agencies? Could you please suggest any good tour operators or agencies who are reliable for 2 girls to travel safely?

b) If we are to book ourselves, please let us know if the places we want to cover can be done within a budget of 50k per person (hotels in leh, camps in Pangong, Tso moriri and Nubra along with taxis and meals). Also, please let us know how to go about bookin on our own.

Thanks in advance !

Reply
Vargis.Khan June 22, 2018 - 3:07 pm

Hi Ashwini – You will easily be able to cap it in 50k per person. No need to book anywhere. Just reach Leh, find a hotel per your liking, check in and then catch shared taxis early in the morning from Leh bus stand to Nubra, Pangong and Moriri. You got nothing to worry about. For your peace of mind, take a look at this article. This was posted by a friend of mine who went to Ladakh solo and she did it by public transport. Her details can help you plan.

Hi Vargis,
Thanks for the info.

We are a group of 6 persons who are visiting Ladakh from 15 September to 21 September 2018.

I wanted to know the following:-

1.What is the expected temperature / climatr during the said period.

2. Should we expect some snowfall and what type of wollens will you recommend.

3. We are planning to visit both tso moriri lake and pangyong lake. Kindly let us know how can we cover these two locations in a day, with an overnight stay at pangyong lake.

Reply
Vargis.Khan June 18, 2018 - 2:04 pm

Hi Keshav

1. It is going to be cold. Nights will get close to zero.
2. It will only snow at top of the passes, not in lower areas.
3. You can go to Pangong, stay there for the night and then go to Tso Moriri taking the Chushul route. It will be a long journey though.

Reply
Keshav June 18, 2018 - 6:27 pm

Hi Vargis.

Many thanks for your quick response.

I want to know your views on the degree of coldness. I understand that the nights will be chilly, but since most of our travel will be during the day, is it okay if we carry our regular wollens like jackets, pullover. Are the days too on a colder side? I am asking this because your article on ”packing stuffs” provides an insight upto August month.

I was looking the climate forecast from AccuWeather and weather is estimated to be in the range of 15-25 degree for Leh. Is that correct?

We are planning to cover zanskar Valley, nubra valley, magnetic hill, pangyong lake and tso moriri lake during over 6 day trip.

Once again thanks a lot for your response and looking forward to hear from you.

Vargis.Khan June 18, 2018 - 6:40 pm

Hi Keshav – When I say cold, I mean that the temperature at day will be pleasant enough but there will be a definite chill in the wind since by Sep mid, it starts to snow at high altitude passes. Carry your regular cottons and woolens but make sure you are carrying a heavy windproof jacket that can protect your head, neck and ears as well.

Private taxis in Ladakh is a really costly affair. A 2 days journey to Nubra will cost about 10-12k. Then similar charge for Pangong and Tso Moriri as well. Covering the itinerary above, you will be paying about 30 to 35,000 for a private taxi.

29th to 6th is a bit short on time but you can follow the following itinerary.

29th – Delhi to Manali
30th – to Jispa
1st – to Leh
2nd – Leh, rest and arraneg permits and visit Khardung La top same day, return to Leh by evening
3rd – Leh to Pangong to Leh
4th – to Kargil
5th – to Srinagar
6th – Since you are in a car and I am gessing with multiple drivers, make it a straight run back to Delhi.

It is too but not way too cold right now. Take a few thermals, light woolens and a heavy windproof jacket and you will be OK. For driving to Ladakh, please take a look at the article below.

So was just wondering if the road conditions for our entire trip would be favourable ? Would there be high chances of road blocks or road closures ? And would it be easy to drive through the snow in a fortuner 4×4 ? Would really appreciate your input on this. Thanks

Sep 30 :- Leh-Rest Day ( By Air- Around 9)
01 Oct:- Sham Valley (Including Alchi) (Bike)
02 Oct- Leh to Nubra (Bike)
03 Oct -Nubra to Leh (Bike)
04 Oct -Leh -Pangong -Leh (Bike)
05 Oct- Leh-Manali (Cab in 02 days)

– Is it possible to get the inner line permit on 30th which is Saturday or Sunday?
-Will it be okay to travel to Manali from Leh during the first week of October?
-If the weather is not good to travel to Manali we would like to travel to Srinagar, so will there be buses available from Leh to Srinagar?

Thanks
Nischal

Hi Nishchal,

Your itinerary looks OK. You should get the permits on Saturday but do it as soon as you land. Maybe half of the group can hotel hunt and the other half goes to arrange permits because I believe they close a bit early on Saturdays. Another thing would be to contact a hotel, ask them if they can keep your permits arranged at the time of your arrival and if they agree, then send them your IDs, book your stay with the, and transfer the money. You should be able to complete Leh Manali in first week of October.

Hello Vargis. We are two people on a single bike going to Ladakh on 30th September onwards for 6 days. We plan to cover Nubra, pangong tso and tso moriri during this time. We would be renting the bike from Leh itself.

Would it be too cold in early October?

Is it recommended to self camp in Ladakh during this time?

Are bikes easily available on rent during the end of tourist season?

How are the roads? Especially agham to shyok and Merak to mahe.

30th is Saturday and Dussehra. Can we get ILP on that day. Coz the next working day is 3rd October.

Hello Kezwaish,

1. It will be cold but not extremely.
2. Yes you can self camp, but just be well prepared and do not camp in middle of nowhere. Take a look at the below post please.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/camping-in-ladakh-preparations-precautions/

3. Yes you will get bikes easily at this time.
4. Agham Shyok is OK these days. Merak to Mahe is a mix of good, bad and ugly.
5. You will not get ILP at this time. Better to contact a hotel there, book with them, send your IDs and ask them to keep your permits ready.

Hello vargis,

we group of 6 with 4 enfield 500cc have planned out our Ladakh trip (September) but, we are stuck with a situation for which we are confused and not able to find any possible solution
From Nubra valley to Pangong Lake should we take agham-shyok or wari-la route as we are short with days

Hello Shubham – It depends really. Both routes are equally difficult to begin with. If your motorcycles are in near perfect condition, you are riding solo and you want to add another pass to your trip, then go for Wari La. This however will also mean almost 10 hours of travel on that particular day. If you are however riding with a pillion and would rather complete the journey in 5-6 hours, than take the Agham Shyok route.

Hi Sushant – I am sorry but I did not quite get the question. You want to complete which cirucit, Manali – Leh – Srinagar or are you asking about Nubra valley?

Hello Vikas – If you are asking whether or not it is safe for them to be traveling to Ladakh, then a lot of people visit Ladakh with children so it is not something unusual. As long as there is no medical condition involved for both your kid and your father, you should be Ok. I would still however highly recommend that you consult a doctor as well. Also take a look at the article below.

Dear Vargis
What will be the temperature in September 7th to 15 September? Do we need to carry heavy winter cloth? And what about rain in September? I need to pack my backpack. I am very excited

Hi Vargis Sir,

Im planning to spend time in Ladakh from 25th Aug till 3rd Sept. I am a budget and solo traveller. Want to stay 2nights & 3 days at Tso Moriri and rest across Nubra. Will be reading as much as possible on Nubra and Tso Moriri. Your website has most info. Would love to sleep peacefully and away from noisy tourists. Hope you would have something to recommend.

Somnath Dada, the only problem is between Pangong and Tso Moriri. Are you taking the Chushul route? That is actually a 2 days jjourney there. How are you traveling, Private taxi?

It is too long a journey. Ideally you should have broken it in two days with a night stay at Hanle.

Bhai,

I am planning travel from 1st to 10th October Manali-Leh-Manali.

1. Will the roads be open to come back to Manali
2. How is the situation about renting bike from Manali, how about renting from Chandigarh.
3. Any issues in staying in personal tent, any place to avoid stating in tent.

Bharat Bhai,

Yes the road will most probably remain open around your time or return. No matter where you rent the bikes from, you can only use it to reach Leh. For visiting Nubra and Pangong, you will need to rent another bike from Leh. For camping, please take a look at the article below.

hello vargis bhai,planning a trip from 28th sep to 12 th october:del-manali-leh-nubra-pangong-leh-kargil-sonamarg-srinagar-del

1) which are the coldest areas among them-likely minimum temperatures just for preparation
2)we have kept 2 nights for nubra-what all activities can we cover there
3)is sonamarg going to be destered at that time of the year?
4)returning from sonamarg via srinagar, safety issues for tourist on highway?

Hello Gautam Bhai

1. It will pretty much be the same all across, hard to say which one would be colder.
2. Sightseeing is the only thing you could do there. Take a look at the article below for a list of places to visit in Nubra valley.
3. No it will not be.
4. Hard to predict how Kashmir will be in September, things change there by the day. Keep a check on the news before you leave is all I can say. Things are OK as of now but cant say the same for September.

No Basu Bhai, you are OK to go since you would have crossed Manali Leh highway before October and returning via Srinagar
